Verizon Planned to Sell the Galaxy Nexus for $199 on Black Friday According to Ads

If you aren’t buying into a “Nexus delay” that we have talked about time and time again over the last week, maybe this will help. According to an ad campaign that is running across a variety of sites who are a part of the NetShelter ad network, the Galaxy Nexus should have already been available to the public and on-sale for Black Friday (today) at the low price of $199 on 2-year contract ($100 cheaper than the expected $299 price). So you know, Verizon runs almost all of their major marketing campaigns through NetShelter, so this isn’t just some random network putting out a Black Friday deal to grab attention. This was going to be one spicy deal.

But now, thanks to unconfirmed reasons, the phone won’t be available today. The latest date we have seen from Verizon is December 8. Will we be dancing in G-Nex juice come that day? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Update:  As some have requested, we should talk more about the significance of this price. Has Verizon seen the light and decided to offer their first 4G LTE Android 4.0 device at just $199? Maybe. Was this a Black Friday deal only? Maybe. Is this the 16GB version at $199 with the 32GB version still dropping in at $299? Could be a possibility too. There is no way to tell from this ad. Would be nice to see this price stick for good though, wouldn’t it?

View the ad here and embedded below.

Cheers Kidtronic and Garrett!

Aww, I woke up and jumped on Droid-Life to see an add for a $199 Galaxy Nexus, I got my hopes up and then I read the headline…

  • Anonymous

android 4.0 had many bugs so they pushed 4.0.1
volume bug is annoying so 4.0.2 is likely coming
if anything like Gingerbread then OEMs will release devices on 4.2 in February. :O)

Get the Razr or Rezound and wait for the software to finish cooking.
    else stfu  :O)  LOLJK

    • Dominick DeVito

Sure, but by the time the ‘custom’ phones get it the Nexus phones will be on 4.1 “jelly bean” in time for the Easter Bunny.

Plus you’re now giving Motorola, HTC and others to screw up Android. :p

      • Anonymous

true enough.  but if google stays on the same cycle then we will not see J until end of May or June.  OEMs then in August so we have time to get ICS fully baked I would think.

for me i wanted the TSBs.  The “no button” concept on tablets work for me but on a handset I want the tsb or physical button.  so I went for the Razr and have not had a single regret.

I will play with the Gnexus but too big for lil ol me.  Razr looks a bit odd when holding to my ear as it is quite wide.  I use BT mostly so i can live with the width

        • Dominick DeVito

Yeah it is quite an achievement of engineering (Razr). The width didn’t bother me, I’m just not a fan of non-removable batteries, especially on LTE right now.

As an OG owner for 2 years I’ve been lucky to have stock Android since the beginning. Custom skins are okay but I never found MotoBlur or Sense (or others) to truly add anything of significance. Sense adds functionality but is half-baked and slow, MotoBlur (or whatever it’s called) is okay but the newer version on the Bionic and Razr is a bit overzealous for my taste.

          • Anonymous

ya know what i did?   i got the mophie juice pack 4000mAh in case i get caught out with no juice.  its on sale now but it is a great lil device.

          • Dominick DeVito

Yeah, a co-worker who has the Razr (and let me play with it for an afternoon) told me about that, as I told him about my fear of running out of juice.

I will still consider the Razr if the G-Nex gets delayed past Dec 8th (or cancelled altogether), but I would like to see a custom ROM for it beforehand

  • Joshnichols189

Its not a black friday ad.. it has an 11/29 date according to engadget

Verizon, I am beginning to hate you.

  • 360NikonD300

What’s the average age of the Droid-Life visitor? A little playful banter is great, but I could really do without the immature middle school comments and name calling.  It really is embarrassing when I leave the Droid-Life web page open and my wife reads some of these comments.

Yes, I’m as disappointed as anyone with the Nexus delays, but let’s stick to substance and meaningful discussion.

    • http://twitter.com/Daisyville Gina

Is that a real question? Are you taking an age poll or just being facetious? Cuz I’m over 30 chronologically, but I don’t think I matured beyond 20!  =D

Why are YOU embarrased?  You didn’t write the goofy stuff. You can’t just ignore it, you have to try to moderate what people say? Don’t trample, dude. Live & let live. =)

your point, primo?  pissing her off is good for your relationship.

      seriously.

Are you really getting mad over something on the web? Nobody is forcing you to this site and if your wife gets upset over comments on a site about phones then you have much bigger things to worry about. smh

    • http://www.joshbroton.com Josh Broton

OK. You replace your Nikon with a Canon, and I’ll stop being immature. That way, you will own a more mature product, and I will own a more mature comment portfolio.

See kids? THAT is how you troll properly.

Verizon never planned to sell this phone.  They don’t want to give control on the phone.  They don’t want others to dictate what can or cannot be on the phone because they want to put their crap onto the phone.  There is a reason why the “gave up” the SGSII for this.  To get an exclusivity on this where they can rush it out. That’s why.  Would they rather sell the Droid RAZR, Rezound over the iPhone? hell yes!  But the reason why they carry the iPhone is because they woud lose massive amounts of customers, as they would flock to iPhone carriers.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the best android phone out there and (arguably) the best handset period.  Verizon dosen’t want this out.  If this comes out, it will “kill” the sells of the Resound, RAZR, other high end android handsets and guess what Verizon will end up with?  iPhone(s) and Nexus as the best seller.  Verizon dosen’t want that to happen because these are “pure” devices.  No carrier branding (theoretically on the nexus) and no Verizon crap on the phones itself.  They can’t force crap down people’s throat.  Besides the Nexus being the top (android) seller on Verizon, it could force other companies to make “pure” devices that have no bloatware (aka Verizon apps) and no carrier branding.  Meaning? Their whole lineup of smartphones could end up having no Branding and Verizon bloatware.  They do NOT want that to happen.

Plus by scoring an “exclusivity” they could prevent it from coming onto other carriers. (at least for a while)  Last they want to happen is have this phone become an instant hit on At&t, Sprint and T-mobile.  Because instead of just having customers leaving for the iPhone (when they did not have the iPhone), they would customers leaving for the Galaxy Nexus.  Meaning they would have to get this phone to prevent people from leaving. And I don’t need to go on of what will happen, since I already said it above.

By scoring an “exclusivity” and dragging the release date out as far as possible, they can essentially crush this phone. They absolutely have no intrest in selling this phone because they cannot force their crap down people’s throat. (carrier branding and apps/services).  If this phone came out on other carriers, eventually, they would have to get the nexus because they would have customers defecting them for this on other carriers, just like the iPhone. Then they would have to get this phone, which would easily be a hit, and pushing the amount of phones with branding and crapware down the drain.

Don’t believe me?  This is happening exactly in Japan with the iPhone. (I Believe it’s japan)  there is a carrier who wants to install crapware onto the iPhone and they are essentially in a stuck position because they want the iPhone, but Apple won’t let them to install crapware.  Except that Verizon was smart enough to realize, this phone gets onto other carriers? They will eventually be “forced” to carry it.  But by grabbing an “exclusivity” onto the phone, they could essentially prevent it from ever happening.

    • TheAndroid1

I think you are overestimating the impact this will have on other phone sales.

The VAST majority of customers won’t care that this sees updates first and couldn’t care less what OS version the phone is on.  There are still going to be a ton of people who will buy the rezound because it has the free beats headphones, or the RAZR because it is so thin.

Because of this, I don’t think they have anything to worry about with the bloatware.  They will lose it on this phone but it won’t hurt their future phones.  Most people won’t not buy a phone because it has a couple of bloat apps on it.

They are dragging out the release date to increase the excitement.  It gets people talking who will eventually buy the phone.

    • Dominick DeVito

Dude, relax. This phone will be in our hands in two weeks. No need to flip out.

Go hang some decorations and sing some XMas songs. Happy Holidays!

      • Blootzm3

dude take a chill pill and quit commenting on other people’s intelligent observations. Go sing some Christmas Carol’s and calm down with criticizing.

      Long and wrong

  • http://profiles.google.com/animorphed Jake Byckowski

There is nothing about this ad that states it was meant for Black Friday. In fact, the other phones listed are not part of the Black Friday promotion at all. The prices for the other two phones also does not match up. I am aware the Charge will drop with the Nexus released but the Stratosphere shouldn’t change due to the Nexus being out. This appears to be a Samsung holiday lineup and was only released early by mistake. It is still possible to see these prices make the final cut.

  • STiK

Funny thing about all this is, Vzw is going to finally release this thing and we are going to hear all these people who say they should release it now and fix bugs later bitching cause Vzw released such a buggy ass piece of hardware. The Nexus story is NEVER going to end :(  Our rep has one of these things and he says that it’s nowhere near ready to be released to the public but he thinks it will be released before christmas anyway.

    • TheAndroid1

Except it has already been released in other parts of the world almost bug-free (only one that I have heard of and it would not have affected American carriers anyway).

      • STiK

Too bad the LTE version hasn’t been released relatively bug free around most parts of the world. I will take a Vzw reps word who is actually carrying the phone over people on a blog any day of the week.

        • TheAndroid1

They’re holding it back to raise excitement. It’s a common move and I’m surprised at how many people don’t get it.

  • Anonymous

ok so..razr for $0.01 or nexus for $200 (after tax, with coupon, roughly around the same anyways)

  • babadush

It doesn’t take this much time to launch an effing phone Verizon. Nobody cares about your razr or rezound. Just release the damn thing

  • Anonymous

Why’s it say 11/29 in url if it was for black Friday?

    • http://profiles.google.com/animorphed Jake Byckowski

      Exactly!

  • Anonymous

$199 will be for the 16gb. If there is a 32gb it will be $299.

    • Kedmond

The SKU for the 16 GB doesn’t exist in the USA.

  • http://twitter.com/Daisyville Gina

What’s the female equivalent of blue balls? I have some ideas, but fear it’ll get flagged.

Yesterday, I was at all the way through to the confirmation screen to upgrade to the Razr….and then I mashed the browser and ran out of the room. I wasn’t this retarded before…effing phone.

    • Revolagoy

I just upgraded to the Razr and will return it for a $35 stocking fee when the Nexus comes out. Check out Verizon’s return policy. Any phone purchased now can be returned by January 15th. Your contract reverts back to where it was before you buy the phone when you do the return. So, I am basically renting the Razr till the Nexus comes out. The only gamble is if the Nexus is delayed beyond 1/15/12.

      • http://twitter.com/Daisyville Gina

I keep seeing posters say this, but when I had the Bionic for a week, I had to pay outright for the phone, $350 (california sales tax) and then when I returned it, on top of the restocking fee, I had to wait almost three weeks for a refund. So I’m not sure if they’d make me pay for the GNex out of pocket again or would apply what I spend on the Razr to the cost of the GNex? I am not willing to float almost $700 out to Verizon, so I have BBalls.

    • Mimeo Ink

We have no equivalent slang term. I’ve heard “blue vulva” (accurate), “blue bean” (inadequate) and “blue ovaries” (no vasocongestion here, so wrong), but they all scream “trying too hard.”

In this case, I vote “HTC Rhyme cooter.”

  • Uncagedchipmunk

I might be reading into that ad too much but with snow and presents in the back seems more like a X-mas special then a Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale IMO

    • Anonymous

Black friday sales are generally aimed towards early Christmas shoppers, so this makes sense to me. Regardless, I’m still sad we don’t have the phone now :( And you know once it finally comes out it will be $299. Sure would rock if they released it for $199 anyway though!

  • bigrob60

      • Anonymous

Samsung is never better than moto period. You will have the best operating system with bugs in it. Gs2 is the best Samsung device to this date. It still not as good as moto on sound quality, radios and gps. I can live with the gs3 if they can improve on those departments.

        • Dominick DeVito

It’s so funny how I keep hearing Motofans tell me how inferior Samsung hardare is, and how superior Moto radios are.

Did we forget about the Bionic? It has a faulty radio – incapable of holding a connection.

        • Dominick DeVito

I never deny Moto’s hardware – it’s their software that frightens me.

          • Anonymous

I have to say the Razr software is vastly different than the original X and all its blur’y gore.  First thing is to get rid of all the Moto widgets, except the very well done Weather widget.   I don;t even see blur

          • Dominick DeVito

Yeah but the fact that it’s still there underneath (particularly in menus, etc) bothers me. I just wish they (Moto, VZ<,etc) would give the option to disable it altogether.

          • Anonymous

Are you saying that the new moto’s ui on the droid 3, bionic and razor is bad? Are you still living with the droid x on froyo? That was the bad moto’s ui. Go check kellex review, he explained everything.

          • Dominick DeVito

No, I have an OG, rockin Pete Alfonso’s GPA19.

I had an Atrix for a month this summer, didn’t like the UI, cancelled AT&T – back to the OG. Then bought an X2 – eh, didn’t like the UI, returned it (because it was 3G not because of the UI).

Bought the Bionic, liked the UI better, but it was defective. They refunded it and exchanged it with another new Bionic, same bug. But I did like the UI better, but still hate their widgets and I really hate when you create an app shortcut you have to tell it you want it on your home screen, then you have to move a 2nd time. That sounds like a small gripe, but it’s very annoying.

I also don’t like how it “tries” to respond to your touch when flipping through home screens (slow or fast, etc). Sometimes it didn’t respond correctly and screen switching was erratic.

          • Anonymous

The razor is fast and so is the bionic. When moto started to put the ddr2 ram in their devices, that fixed the lag problem.

          • Dominick DeVito

Why does the Razr have the inferior OMAP 4430?

Google clearly stated ICS should be used on the 4460.

The GSII is the best Android phone ever made and sold – it’s just a shame Verizon customers never had a chance to own one.

The G-Nex is the next best thing (but better in other areas)

          • Anonymous

You are clueless. To this point the razr is the best device ever made outside an inside period. The next line up of moto devices will have hd display, nfc, ics, and better cameras. I can’t wait to replace my bionic with another moto beast or gs3 if Samsung get their act together.

          • Dominick DeVito

I agree that the 2012 lineup will no doubt sport better hardware features (better and HD displays, cameras, etc) – but I can’t wait much longer. My OG still runs great but can’t hold a charge very long and it looks like it’s been in a war.

I don’t want to wait for Moto to get their act together. Plus I want a stock phone.

I prefer plastic over a weak phone. My brothers friend, who works at Apple was testing other phones for build quality, etc. When they twisted the phone, with barely any force, the lcd underneath completely shattered. Oh, and then there is this: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/11/21/droid-razr-and-its-gorilla-glass-fail-to-survive-a-pocket-drop-galaxy-nexus-succeeds-down-flight-of-stairs/

I will always put a cover in all my device anyways. I just feel that samsung is cheap in that department. Moto did that as well with the droid 3, bionic and droidx2. They put cheap displays on those devices, which i did not like. On the other hand Moto always improve their products unlike sammy. They have been having gps and radios issues since forever and they have not fixed it yet.

          • Guest

          • Anonymous

I rather have every other specs such as better processor and camera over some touchy build quality. Motorola sucks so much in camera that it’s basically useless, not to mention that Moto phones lags so much compared to Samsung’s “plastic” phones.

          • Anonymous

Moto’s processor is omap and tegra, which are great. Samsung does not put good radios, which is the second best feature in a device. Battery life is the best feature. Samsung does not use second generation ram nor hdmi out, hdmi mirror, moto cast nor smart actions. Moto has the best accessories. I love moto because of the radios, call quality and lastly build quality. By the way if I want the best camera I will get iphone, nokia, htc amaze and the rezound. Htc has the best android cameras at the moment not sansumg. I. Do feel that the gs2 will be the second best device of 2011, the razor being the king.

The best processor Moto ever used is OMAP 4430. Galaxy Nexus already possesses superior processor in OMAP 4460, and it’s not even best processor Samsung uses. Samsung’s own Exynos already beats any OMAP or Tegra in power, performance, and GPU. And yeah, battery life is also a great feature and Samsung’s phones are known to have best battery life in Android devices. Btw, no one really gives a shit about “second generation ram, hdmi out, hdmi in, and accessories”. And really, now you’re bragging about Verizon’s bloatware? Really? Wow you really are a tool. Btw, Galaxy S2 is as good camera as any phone you just mentioned. My cousin had S2 and my brother has iPhone 4S (sadly).

          • Anonymous

No processor beats tegra when it comes to games. Exynos its good for web browsing. The new moto devices will have everything hd display, better camera, better software, they have improved their software greatly. Samsung is the second choice on android and on television too. You are clueless and a turd.

I tried to say nothing but I guess I have to feed the troll a little bit. I’m sure you think you know what you are talking about, and its nice that you care so much for motorola products, but you are not helping your brand by passing off your opinion as facts, especially on a site where a number of us actually take the time to do a little research. I could correct most of your statements with actual facts as a few other users have done but really what’s the point. Moto has some great stuff but so do Samsung and HTC (and others) in the mobile space. If you really care that much about Motorola you would stop commenting and embarrassing the brand and yourself.

Don’t get me wrong, I would take sansumg over htc any day. There are trolls in here that they hate moto because they lock the bootloader, I just reply back to their post.

    • Bionic

I find it funny that anyone thinks this is verizon’s fault.  Its technical issues like the volume control that are holding it back

      • Anonymous

        Keep thinking that.

  • roffle24

If this thing doesn’t launch by mid december I’m jumping ship to another phone, D4 or Razr. Not trying to have this be another botched T-Bolt launch because of Verizon.

    • http://twitter.com/evulhotdog evulhotdog

You do realize that nobody would have ever known it was supposed to be released on x date, so all of this madness and rage coming out of you is useless since they havent even launched the phone yet or said anything about it. You’re the one making yourself mad for listening to blogs and such.

      • Anonymous

leaked release dates cause anger. thats why VERIZON would only tell when they are sure its going to happen. sigh.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

They showed the phone close to a month and a half ago….we shoukdnt have to wait that long….you show the phone you release it just goes to show you how meet up the carriers are

    FU VZW

  • Dcy

Unbelievable, I really am starting to doubt this is coming this year. I am thinking verizon has MAJOR issues with the galaxy nexus in order to miss black Friday. Missing black Friday or cyber Monday is a HUGE deal.

    • BH

I think you a so right…must be major behind the scenes issues with this phone.

    • Anonymous

This says nov 29 in url pretty sure it wasn’t meant for black Friday. Idk where dl got black Friday from clearly with presents it would seem to be a dec launch or late nov after black Friday.

    • http://profiles.google.com/animorphed Jake Byckowski

This was not meant for Black Friday. People will get the Nexus regardless of the release (unless they pull and 8mo Bionic) date. There is no practical business sense to release this phone before Black Friday and not make more sales on the Razr and Rezound. The more returns to swap the Nexus the more $35 fees they can collect and they need something to push for the Christmas holiday. They aren’t missing out but gaining by waiting. I hate waiting for it personally but Verizon is in it for the money and financially it makes sense.

  • einstein2001

I was being patient, but now I’m pissed. If this phone gets released for any more than 199 I’m done!

    • GNex

      You’re done.

  • Thelegedofdavid

Dear god i hope its true. But nevertheless…if its more…..then im just gonna have to start stripping on the side to afford it.

    • Thelegedofdavid

      i dance pretty good too

  • Anonymous

Today is Black Friday…………There is no $199 Nexus deal

    FAIL!

  • David Verba

I know this is a big disappointment!  BUT Livingsocial is offering certificates for $25 that are good for $50 on accessories or a device.  It doesn’t expire until the end of December, so it’s a quick & easy way to get $25 off the device!
    Link to deal:

    • James Friedman

      Thank you for this!

      • David Verba

No problem – glad I could help!

    • Jrm5021

Do you know if this can be combined with a loyalty discount?

      • Edwin M

No, it’s the costco wireless store. The loyalty thing only applies at the Verizon Wireless stores.

        • Jrm5021

not the rezound costco thing, but rather living social discount?

    • Javier

Now that you’ve gotten your freebie (I clicked you link) can I get in? https://share.livingsocial.com/deals/178420?ref=conf-jp&rpi=37266114

    • HTC_Rezound_for_50

How about a HTC Rezound for $50 on an upgrade at Costco Wireless!!!  I just picked on up:

      http://membershipwireless.com/index.cfm/go/shop/do/PhoneDetails/productId/4907

That’s right- only $50 for existing customers to upgrade to a HTC Rezound- online only.

      • bigrob60

        2-yr agreement?

        • Edwin M

Always 2 year agreements. It’s Verizon.

          • bigrob60

Figured as much but one can always hope.

          • Tony Allen

Always 2 year agreements. It’s a big American wireless carrier.

      • Jack_Davis

Wow, your right!  It shows a $240 instant savings off of the Costco upgrade price of $289.

I jumped on this-thanks for the tip.

Should have just waited on the Galaxy Nexus. Oh well…your loss.

damn…wanted to use NFC with my girl, but this was too good to pass up…now she’ll stop bitching about her phone

        • shdowman

90 days to exchange…you CAN change your mind…

I just bought one for my wife as well.

      • http://twitter.com/mkubik75 Mike Kubik

I’m trying to add a line to my family share account, but the site won’t let me.  I’ve been on hold with customer support 30 min.  Has anyone tried to do this?

        • Jack_Davis

No need to, just get the phone and then call Verizon to activate it:

          http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3608138

There also is a 90 day return policy, in case anything goes wrong.  You would just have to pay the $35 Verizon restocking fee, if you keep the phone beyond the 14 days.

        • Christephor

if your adding a line go thru amazon get the phone for a penny

        • goose2212

Have had the same issue for 2 days. I get to a certain part of the process and am then told that they are experiencing technical difficulties and to call customer service. I even went to my local Costco and the guy at the kiosk said he couldn’t do anything about it.

      • Dudeslim

Sick deal and I am surprised DL did not notice this yet?

        • Wake_up_DL

Hey Droid Life- you missing out on hot leads?

Let’s get a post up about a brand new phone for $50 with an upgrade!

      • http://www.facebook.com/adam.magie Adam Magie

What if I have an unlimited data plan, do I just pick the one that costs the same?

    • Alexander Amato

Thanks for the tip! Picked it up.

    • http://profiles.google.com/animorphed Jake Byckowski

Hopefully Kellex will fix this misleading title as this was NOT a leaked Black Friday ad. Its the Xmas Samsung holiday push slated to begin next week.

      • Anonymous

“planned”, but just never came to be, considering there is no actual release date yet.

        • Anonymous

How do you know it won’t come to be? It isn’t the 29 yet which is the date of this so relax..

        • http://profiles.google.com/animorphed Jake Byckowski

No release date that we have been given publicly. Doesn’t mean Verizon doesn’t know.

  • Razr Rental Member

    $199…and I don’t have it today??  FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Rw-1

It will be interesting to see how that morphs into $299, greed …  I sincerely hope I’m wrong, but …

    • GNex

      “Greed”…this is why you’re the “99%.” Looser.

      • Joshnichols189
