DROID 4 Scheduled to Launch December 8, Same Day as the Galaxy Nexus?

Could the DROID 4 find its way into stores on December 8 alongside the Galaxy Nexus? According to the latest info from our friends at Verizon, that’s exactly what the plan is. Well, the Nexus is still up in the air to our knowledge, so let’s just talk about the D4 for a second.

We gave you the first photos of the newest DROID slider almost a month ago now, followed by a mention in Big Red’s device management system. The idea that it could be released before X-mas was talked about, but we’re not sure that we truly believed it could happen that fast. After all, the RAZR hasn’t even been around long enough to accumulate dust. Motorola, puttin’ in work.

Specs from our sources are as follows:

  • 4″ Super AMOLED Advanced display
  • Full 5-row “illuminated” keyboard
  • RAZR styling
  • 4G LTE
  • Non-removable battery (maybe)
  • Android 2.3.5
  • 1080p video recording (assuming 8MP)
  • Front camera
  • HDMI out
  • MotoACTV syncing

Ready for the world’s first DROID 4G LTE slider?

Cheers ___!

Its great but I don’t see it getting ics.

I really hope so.  When the Droid 3 came out, I really wanted it to have 4G.  Now it’s here with the Droid 4, and I want it ASAP.  :)

For the question everyone wants to know about:

    Bootloader?

    • Anonymous

Zero chance it’ll be unlocked – VZ isn’t allowing it.

    • http://fujibayashi.jp/ Gasai Yuno

      Unlockable…

…in the European version, which I will sure as hell be getting myself.

  • fish1552

Android 2.3.5?!?!?!!?!  If it isn’t 4.0+ I refuse to buy it now!

    THIS is my new phone!

If I hear one more thing about large bezels I’m going to start punching some faces

    • Anonymous

      ‘Large bezels’…..let the fun begin!

  • Uncagedchipmunk

Just shows even more that VZW lacks any type of interest in the Nex “if” they do indeed launch the D4 the exact same day. They spread out the Razr and Rezound so why not the Nex and D4? Cause they don’t care IMO

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1430067495 Chris Olson

At least this phone has something unique enough about it that it will have a chance to compete with the Nexus; if someone wants a 4G phone with a full keyboard, this will fit the bill well; for everyone else the Nexus will likely get the nod.

  • Splicer78

Should be listed  in the specs under all Moto US releases for VZW: LOCKED THE F&*K DOWN. Until this changes there will not be a Moto phone in my possession

    • Anonymous

Hate the fact they’re locking em down. Something’s gotta be done about that…..break the encryption, something….can’t let this continue…

Oh yeah the Droid 4, completely forgot about that with all this Nexus talk >.<

Moto has watered down the Droid brand. My grey haired OG hangs its head in shame and embarrassment.

  • Anonymous

OMG!! ANOTHER DROID!!!!?????? Jesus Motorola, can you just stop and make something good for a change!?

  • Dominick DeVito

Who the hell wants this phone? Honestly, as an OG owner, the only time I use the physical keyboard is when I install a new custom ROM and I get the intro screen. It slows me down immensely.

    • http://fujibayashi.jp/ Gasai Yuno

      D2G user here.

I use the physical keyboard all the time in ConnectBot.

@939c23883e17a0f06845eed5a59a4ab5:disqus  A genuine question.. my best friend’s mom makes $79 an hour on the computer. She has been out of work for 5 months but last month her pay was $8943 just working on the computer for a few hours. Read about it here http://tiny.cc/icj5u

I hope someone takes you into the woods and disembowels you with a wooden cooking spoon.

  • mathias

The Droid/keyboard line may (deservedly) be headed toward extinction: with each iteration of the phone its one step forward and one (or two) step(s) backwards. To wit, compared to D1 the D3 had a dual core processor but a God awful p.o.s. screen. The D4 will have have LTE but no GSM global roaming AND a non-removal battery. It really looks like self sabotage from Big Red.

Is this the way to inspire brand loyalty? “We added 150 horsepower to the car but took away the stereo and the trunk. Are you excited or what.”

    • Anonymous

Droid 5: We’ve abandoned keyboards, but you have a better screen, and a removable battery!!!!

  • Anonymous

Seeing how crappy my Droid 2 Global was, how many bugs plagued the outdated Droid 3 and Bionic, and the fact that it wont have a removable battery, I won’t be getting this phone.

  • Anonymous

A genuine question gets an honest answer. As a frequent traveler, I use SD cards to pre load my music, movies, and Tv shows on. On airplanes, some airports, and many hotels where wifi is terrible, I don’t have to rely on streaming to have access to my content. To me, in my unique situation, this is a pretty important feature. Take a flight to Sydney without wifi on board and you might be crying without some offline content.

  • Ahsan

The Droid Bionic looks way sexier than the RAZR. I’d rather have a Bionic. Juuuust saying.

    • Dominick DeVito

      chubby chaser

  • Anonymous

So how many people feel that Moto/Verizon should give us Droid 3 owners a discount to upgrade to this phone. Also the Droid 3 was plagued with bugs so I think we deserve it. Lol fat chance….

  • Anonymous

Oh so you have a quad core phone right now?  Sweet!!  The nexus is not running the latest hardware so don’t even start.

    • Anonymous

      damn disque post error….

  • Anonymous

will this have the 4430 or 4460?

    • Anonymous

4430, overclocked to 1.2 like the Razr.

  • Anonymous

If this phone has Global capabilities, then it is a winner. If not, then I guess I continue waiting until a 4G LTE device with global capabilities comes out. I like my Bionic, but it’s just missing the global function, since I do a lot of traveling abroad.
Come on Verizon don’t fail me.

    • Bionic

      more than likely not

    • Anonymous

it won’t. 1st gen LTE chips don’t have full global roaming.

      • Anonymous

I know they don’t, but can’t they add the GSM slot global capability antenna? Like the Droid 2 Global

        • Anonymous

No they can’t. That’s my original point. Have to wait for the 28nm chips due next year. It’s not about the antenna, the modems simply don’t exist yet.

  • Dominick DeVito

Moto strikes (out) again. Another phone with an old hardware design and old OS.

    • Bionic

wow, really?  Old hardware huh?  And just what phone out there has “new” hardware in our world?  Cuz i know of nothing that is so vastly different.

      • Dominick DeVito

old hardware DESIGN. Jackass. Reading is fundamental.

No one wants physical buttons anymore – let alone a physical keyboard. The slide out keyboard on the Droid series is absolutely useless and completely regressive.

        • Evan Knofsky

No one wants a physical keyboard? They are quite nice.

          • Dominick DeVito

If they work as well as a Blackberry (or to Moto’s credit the Mototola Admiral) then yes physical keyboards are fine – if people want one.

But if the one on the D4 is ANYTHING like the Droids in the past it will indeed suck. And by looking at it it doesn’t look all that different.

          • Evan Knofsky

They keyboard on my D2G worked perfectly fine while I had it.

          • Dominick DeVito

I’m happy for you. The one on my OG (D1) is dreadful

    • Anonymous

Oh so you have a quad core phone right now?  Sweet!!  The nexus is not running the latest hardware so don’t even start.

      • Dominick DeVito

        Hardware DESIGN. Read before trolling.

        • Anonymous

Perhaps you should read. What is old about the design?  And what do you know that is new design?

          • Dominick DeVito

Old design = physical keyboards andor all physical buttons

New design = on screen keyboards and phones with no buttons at all.

          • Anonymous

Oh really?  So you talked to every android user in the world and they said they don’t want a keyboard?  Really?  Oh and even though the Nexus is the ONLY phone without hardware keys that is the new design?  Really?? Do you work for Google….or any of the hardware manufacturers??  If so you should talk to your peeps because last time I checked, the 4 buttons on the bottom is what signifies android, much like the single home button signifies apple.  Also, nexus was a proof of concept with using software buttons on a phone like the way tablets have.  Hardware buttons will be around until Jellybean releases and they still may not go away if the software buttons don’t get a warm reception.

          • Dominick DeVito

Wake up – Google got rid of those buttons for a reason. Trust me in 2012 when the Droids 5 and 6 are released they won’t have physical keyboards.

Motorola (and other OEMs) haven’t caught up yet to the new design for the upcoming year. Maybe Moto should slow down and design something around a Nexus like Google intended them to. INstead all they care about it selling more crap-ass phones, case in point the D3 and 4 are only a few months apart, when in theory they should have been the same phone to begin with.

Go ahead and ask any D3 how they feel right now.

          • Anonymous

WOW!  Didn’t know you could look into the future!  You should play the lottery so you can design your own phone for yourself…

I do agree that Moto needs to reassess the whole Bionic/Razr and D3/D4.  Should not have happened like that but look back to the computer boom.  This type of thing happened for years until it calmed down.

          • Dominick DeVito

All people will do (or continue to do) is return their handset like they’ve been doing. It’s a bad trend in Android and when OEMs like Moto release so many phones a in short period of time returns are bound to happen. I don’t have stats but I’m sure they have a black eye over the Bionic and by the looks of it not many D3 owners are going to be happy.

But I guess those people who make more money than me already figured how to keep customers happy. I guess I’m too poor and stupid to know that.

          • Dominick DeVito

And for the record, I’m not a blind G-Nex sheep fanboy. I’m tired of the same old sh1t from Moto and all other OEMs in 2011 – every phone has more or less been the same experience. I bought the Charge – liked it but felt it was underpowered, gave it to the wife. I bought the X2 – liked it but only 256MB RAM and 3G, returned it. Bought an Atrix on AT&T – liked it but hated the network so back to VZW. Bought the Bionic – complete disaster, had the first one replaced with a new one due to the radio issue and the replacement had the same issue. Still waiting on my next phone – G-Nex? Maybe, if it ever gets released.

All in all the Motorola phones were okay but had awful screens and not a fan of any custom UI, prefer stock if I can avoid it. I guess when the sh1t smoke clears I guess I’m labeled a G-Nex sheep.

            Baaaaaaaa

          • Anonymous

It’d be one thing if you simply liked the Nexus, it’s another thing when you join in on the bandwagon bashing.  Yes, that makes you a fanboy.

          • Dominick DeVito

Uh, no, I’m afraid not. But, you have me at a loss. You know my name but who are you? Just another American who saw too many movies as a child? Another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks he’s John Wayne? Rambo? Marshal Dillon?

          • Anonymous

Come back when you can provide an actual argument, until then……yawn.

          • Guest

what a loser you are. you don’t even have a valid argument.  you just suck on moto’s nut sack.  your dumbass think the bionic is a good phone.  see below buddy!!

          • Dominick DeVito

The OG was geared for blackberry owners to switch. No one in the last year or so needs or wants a physical keyboard, especially ones that suck.

          • Anonymous

Oh so there are no more blackberry uses in the world that could be ready to switch??  Oh and you have held the Droid 4 in your hands and know that the keyboard sucks.  Quit being such a Nexus fanboy.  Your phone….that isn’t even out yet…..will be outdated as soon as the quadcores hit.  GNex is such old tech.  And guess what?  This is the way it will always be.  Every phone released is going to be outdated. This is a fact.  And the point of android is options.  I am sure some people still want a keyboard, especially older people that don’t like software keyboards.  Just because you are the 1% android nerd doesn’t mean everyone must conform to what you think is right.  Otherwise we would be with apple.

          • Dominick DeVito

Yes, you’re right – the G-Nex’s hardware specs will indeed be outdated soon, but that’s not the appeal of the Nexus phones (and I won’t get into that because if you don’t know why then go back and read the 5000 other DL posts on it).

And no, there aren’t that many BB users NOW, but there were TWO YEARS ago, when the OG was designed. And yes that keyboard will blow. How do I know this? Because it hasn’t changed in design – some keys got rearranged and the buttons raised but it’s still the same crap keyboard since the D2. But Android has evolved – look at Android in 2007, 2009 and now 2011 and you’ll see what I mean.

            2007

Moto seems to be stuck somewhere in the middle.

Android is no longer designed around a physical keyboard, let alone physical buttons. Read up on ICS and you’ll start to see why.

          • Anonymous

Oh yes, I obviously have been living in a hole and have never owned an android phone.  So I will take your ubiquitous posts of reviews as gospel for all of android.  You are the typical 1% android nerd that only cares about owning a developers phone.  Sorry to say but there are still a lot of blackberry uses out there because most business still don’t like android’s open architecture.  Android is evolving, but that doesn’t mean that people do.  Some people like hardware buttons or keyboards and they should have the option. And so you don’t like it, I am sure someone else does and it tested well otherwise they wouldn’t release it.  Its called market research which encompasses more then the 1% nerd bubble that is on this site.

          • Dominick DeVito

At least release it with the new OS – damn why spend top dollar on something that already is behind the 8-ball in some aspects.

Your business comment had nothing to do with keyboards. And I guess you’re saying that Android has to tailor to dinosaurs. Yeah, okay. And I think you’re giving Motorola a bit too much credit. I wouldn’t say that know everything there is to know about appealing to a mass audience. Let’s not go there

          • Anonymous

Not sure how they could release a phone with a new OS that has yet to be released on the first OS release device.  Have you considered there might be an agreement with the Nexus that a certain timeframe must pass before phones can be released with the new software.  Also, it is good that it doesn’t get ICS yet since right now it has broken the UK nexus with the volume/signal bug that is still needs to get fixed.

          • Dominick DeVito

Well, for starters, they can, gee I don’t know – WAIT A COUPLE OF MONTHS and slow down and release it with ICS. Sure, I would imagine the G-Nex has to be the FIRST with the new OS but not the only.

This just tells me Motorola has more phones coming in JanuaryFebruary. They know nothing about brand or customer loyalty or retainment. Look at this post and count the D3 owners that are pissed off.

          • http://fujibayashi.jp/ Gasai Yuno

Could you please elaborate for me, how do I comfortably use ConnectBot or any other SSH/terminal client with on-screen keyboard?

It’s really important for me, as I do systems administration for my cluster of *NIX servers. And I haven’t been able to get along with on-screen keyboards — in landscape, they eat all the screen space, and in portrait, the keys are small, and the terminal window is tiny.

            Thanks in advance.

I’ve also heard about this app and it was recommended – you can use soft keyboards, including swype.

          • http://twitter.com/CallOnColin Colin Huber

I’d rather have a physical keyboard. Don’t have to try and speak for everybody, broski.

          • Dominick DeVito

Fine – good for you. I guess I’m surrounded by more dinosaurs than I thought.

What I was also trying to get at was how awful the keyboards are on the Droid series. Moto knows how to make a keyboard (see: Motorola Admiral) but sadly didn’t incorporate any of that goodness in the D4’s.

          • STiK

Quite obvious that you have never used the Droid 3 keyboard.

          • Dominick DeVito

What is the point in trying to be all hip with the non-removable battery if you’re thickening the phone with a physical slide out keyboard anyway?

Honestly, who comes up with these design decisions?

          • Anonymous

Who said the battery was non-removable?

Pretty sure people that make a hell of a lot more then you do and actually know how to appeal to a mass audience instead of the 1%…

      • Bionic

how do you figure?  i love my bionic, no regrets

  • http://www.scaryuncledevin.com/ Devin Rodriguez

So basically a RAZR with a keyboard? I would consider it if they dropped the screen resolution and put an AMOLED Plus in there. Perceived pixels be damned, I want real resolution.

    • Anonymous

I would consider if they made it hd.

      • FSFer

I would consider it if they unlock the bootloader

  • Djstar2k2

umm possible non removable battery and motor slurr um blurr, opps m.a.p. I’ll wait on the gal next but I do love that keyboard

    • Bionic

im pretty sure battery will be removable.  The main reason that the razr battery is non removable is because its a RAZR.  They dont want people putting bigger extended batteries into it.  Not to mention the Razr would look stupid with one of those extended batt doors on it

  • Anonymous

Do I get nexus or d4? Hard choice. I want A big screen and ICS but I also want a keyboard.

    • Bionic

4 inches is plenty unless you plan on watching a ton of netflix.  3.7 on the iphone sucks tho.  Yes that .3 inches makes a big difference

Hence why I said that. I never use the shortcuts nor do I ever slide the keyboard out on the OG Droid. I was not implying that Swype/FlexT9 replaced those shortcuts.

          • Gus

            Sorry, I misunderstood.

Yes, the keyboard provides more than just simple text input.

I make use of keyboard shortcuts all the time! Can’t wait to get more info on the D4.

          • OG-Droid_Droid4

If the Droid 4 does not have the 720p screen and 13 mp camera as the China version of the RAZR, then this is a Moto=FAIL.
Who wants the same crappy screen as the RAZR and bad camera currently in the Bionic/RAZR.

Come on Moto and step up to the plate if you want to compete with the Rezound & Nexus.

At this point an NFC chip would be nice as well, because come Jan. 10, all phones announced at CES will have NFC baked right in.

Actually, I’m kind of holding out for the NFC on the LTE card route to be implemented. I purchased a DROID RAZR knowing that it didn’t have this feature (also not really caring that much about it missing) but I don’t see why they couldn’t provide new LTE cards with NFC baked in to people that wanted them (at a cost or otherwise) when it becomes feasible.

          • Anonymous

I think they are going to relaunch this and the RAZR late January with ICS and the new camera and HD screens. The RAZR and this will get updated at the same time.

There are several negatives about this phone but the number one deal killer for me on any Android phone would be not having a physical keyboard. I’ll be upgrading my D2G for the D4.

    • Asoos

While the non-removable battery and possibly large bezels are very dissappointing, I’m still getting the D4. This date better be true.

      • James

I’m concerned about the battery and bezel seeing how the Razr is pretty disappointing in both those departments. Too bad there aren’t really many top tier sliders on Verizon. There are 3 new high end non-sliders coming/are out while there’s just this one Droid 4 that may come out in December. So choice in high-end sliders is very lacking.

        • Anonymous

And most likely won’t increase any since most of the populace is in the “I want a larger screen” and doesn’t really care about a keyboard.

          • Devator22

I was a hardcore D1 fanatic, and preached to all my friends about how I loved a physical keyboard and the iPhone and all of its ilk could go suck it. Then the little guy took an unfortunate swim and I upgraded to the Dinc 2. Gotta say, I miss the physical keyboard a lot more than I thought. And the extra screen size makes a big difference, too.

          • http://www.ellianth.com Ellianth

Did you mean you miss it a lot less than you thought?

      • djembeman

I don’t get what you guys mean about large bezels on the Droid 4. Look how big the top and bottom bezels are on the upcoming Galaxy Nexus pictures, and the iPhone’s are even bigger than that.

        • Anonymous

the galaxy nexus has an led in the bottom which is some of the reason the bottom bezel had to be a little larger.

          • Anonymous

ROFL, classic strawman argument. We were talking about the screen, now you’re throwing other excuses in to divert attention because you have no counter argument. Yeah, unlocked bootloader, good for you. The Razr, Bionic, Rezound, D4, SGS2, etc, will all be getting ICS and some of those are also unlocked. Zerolag shutter? Yeah I’m going to cry about a 10 ms longer shot time. And uh….OMGZ teh NFC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have fun with your Samsung hardware and lack of expandable storage, since you don’t settle and all.

          • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

if google saw a problem with lack of expandable storage, they would have fixed it. clearly they dont have a problem with it. if they don’t, why should I care?

Will all be getting ICS? Yeah I’m not waiting 6 months for ICS. I have an upgrade now and Google’s flagship device is coming in two weeks soooo.

My camera doesn’t turn everything a blue-ish tint. Yay!

Oh sure, Google thinks it’s ok so it must be, clearly.  Who the hell wants more than 32 GB of storage????

None of the phones I listed have a camera with blue tint, keep trying though, you were close to an actual argument there.

Did someone say ZOMGWTFBBQNFC!!!1!!1!!!!111  Guess you never heard of the NFC capable microsd cards?  Another useful purpose for having an sd slot, imagine that.

Honestly though, isn’t 32 GB’s enough storage for people seeing as Google Music has become available to everyone? I don’t know if it’s the same for everyone (and I’m sure it’s not) but I know that the only reason I filled up my 16GB on my OG was because of music. Since Google Music I only use about 9% of my SD card.

NOTE: I’m not trying to argue, I’m just genuinely curious.

          • Anonymous

I prefer actually having my info on my phone for easy access when I’m not connected. You do know that you have to download every track you want to listen to right? Google music doesn’t start streaming it as soon as you select it either, it has to download the whole track first and even on Verizon’s 4G that can take anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute depending on the length. I have 87 GB worth of music, I’ll take all the space I can get. The new micro sdxc 64 GB cards work in these devices as well.

          • Anonymous

Yes I’m aware that it downloads each track. I haven’t noticed any 10 sec to 1 minute wait time between songs. I usually only have to wait once I first choose an album, after that everything streams smoothly. You still have a valid point though, mainly because I still carry around my first gen 30GB Zune ( ZOMG! Who knew anyone bought one?!) for the times I have a spotty connection.

          • Anonymous

Sweet baby jesus!!  That is a ton of music!!  Rough estimate of 8mb per song at $0.99 your looking at roughly $10,000 of music.  Someone hack this guys music cloud and sell the songs and we will split the profits!!! JK! :)

          • Anonymous

I’ve never payed $0.99 per track, I get full albums.

          • Anonymous

Seriously, for the average user it is probably enough.  One of the major concerns with cloud storage though is if you have data caps like everyone is pushing down.  2 GB will be eaten alive in no time if you are streaming movies and music over 4G.  If you are locked into unlimited, it is less of a concern for now. But unlimited will be ending soon, and then the cell companies will rake everyone over the coals for going over their caps.

          • Anonymous

Very true, that’s why I added that my situation my not be like anyone else. I fortunately am on an unlimited plan (for now) but I usually try to use wifi as much as possible just because it’s quicker. Between work and home I’m almost always on wifi.

          • Anonymous

The cloud sucks when you are traveling in the sticks. It also sucks when you are working inside a building with poor signal and no wifi. It also sucks when you are trying to conserve battery by not using the radios so much because you can’t plug in and charge on a whim. i.e. while cloud storage is ok for some, it is by no means a panacea.

Oh yes NFC is awesome.  Wait, I live in the states and can’t do anything with it because no one uses NFC yet.  Well, maybe in 2 years they will…..wait, bank cards are still being issued without NFC and that has been 3+ years since they started implementing them.  Well I guess I can just beam a webpage to someone with it….

NFC is an emerging technology. Just because you have no idea what it does doesn’t mean a developer can’t create a useful app or a company can’t integrate it with their service.

Forget everything else you brought up. If the D4 screen is as horrible looking as the RAZR I could care less if it pooped out gold. I’d have to look at ugliness everytime I used my phone.

          • Anonymous

ICS is right around the corner and hardly an argument for anything. I would even bet that the January lineup will come pre-installed with it.

My camera doesn’t have a bluish tint. It doens’t have zero shutter lag, but then again, it is a phone, I am not trying to capture hummingbirds mating, it is used for the occasional click of friends or things I see. I am not trying to photo an F-16 doing a high speed fly by, that is what a thing called a “camera” is for, not some crappy 3x digital zoom pin hole camera on a phone.
NFC… who really cares. I have had NFC in stuff for years, most times I wanted to use use it, the stupid clerk didn’t know how it operated or it was off. I don’t think it will kill me to have to use cash or swipe a card to buy a burger or some gas. (which are the only places I have seen to use NFC) I know you can’t wait to walk into starbucks and wave your phone to pay for your $9 coffee. Believe me, you won’t look cool, you will look like a lazy idiot whom couldn’t muster up a ten dollar bill from your wallet.

No, I am not. I like the RAZR but do not own one, nor do I think I will get one. We are at a strange time when devices are launching quickly and getting better at an exponential rate. To be honest, I think Asus will pull out a sneaker in the new year that will give everyone a run for their money. Connected by DROID on Verizon Wireless

          • TC Infantino

Uhm, actually, The Razr or the Rezound or the D4 could very well be better than the Nexus.  How?  Well, how about that it is different than the Razr, Rezound, and D4…and those differences could mean something important to the person spending the money to buy the phone.  I love Moto’s build quality, both the structure and the internals..ie radio quality, speakers, etc.  But I didn’t buy the Razr because I did not like the feel of the device, and that little door for the sim and SD card looks flimsy and easily broken.  I was considering the Rezound because it has a HD screen and incorporates most of the things I want, removable battery, expandable SD memory, but doesn’t have the physical keyboard that I really wanted.  I considered the GNex because it was unencumbered with any manufacturer’s skin, but decided not to get it because I really don’t like Samsung phone quality, both the build and the internals.  Then there is the non-expandable memory and no physical keyboard as well.  I will wait until the D4 comes out and see if it meets my requirements.
Everyone is different, and has different wants in their phone, so no need to bash them if they choose not to get what you specifically think is the Best.  NFC seems to be an interesting technology, and I hope it does proliferate and become very useful, but as of now it hasn’t taken off at all.  It has been around for a while, certain gas stations had special keychain fobs that used it so you could auto-pay at the pump with just a wave of the fob in front of the sensor at the pump.  But I have not once actually seen anyone use one, and until the technology becomes standardized and widespread throughout the retail world I do not see it being anything other than a neat way to communicate between two NFC enabled phones.  So if people could just stop the bashing of those who don’t happen to have or want the exact same phone as they do, we would all appreciate it.

Lol.. That was in last week’s rant. I think people get me wrong, the Gnex is gonna be a great phone. It is not the second coming of Christ though. Being blinded by the Nexus name and ICS just makes some people appear so ignorant. Especially when they go out of their way to rag on everything else. i dont see a slider with ICS

          • Anonymous

You will after the D4 gets upgraded.  I’m willing to buy the D4 now and wait for the upgrade…

          • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

Yeah I’m buying a phone and sticking with it for 2 years. In the past 2 years I haven’t seen a worthy successor for my OG D1. The Galaxy Nexus simply is.

          • Eh

By the time NFC will be useful, I’ll have the Droid 7.

          • Anonymous

With the way Moto is pumping out phones that’ll be sometime late 2012.

          • McDees

That would be the Droid 6.

          • Emily

at 800×480 res the D1 screen looked good. At whatever the Razr is it looks terrible. I dont care how much higher res the screen is the screen technology on the Razr is  awful.

          • Dominick DeVito

Just give up, Moto trolls are brainwashed about their awful displays. Sadly the best Droid screen was the OG’s, they all worsened after it.

          • Anonymous

Compared to the Bionic or the Droid 3, the RAZR’s screen is a big improvement.

          • Dominick DeVito

So what?! The OG has a better screen and it was built two years ago!

          • Anonymous

That’s not the point. The point is they ditched their old screen and is working towards a better replacement.

          • Anonymous

            Droid – 854×480, 3.7″ = 264 PPI
            Droid Incredible – 800×480, 3.7″ = 252 PPI
            Droid Razr – 960×540, 4.3″ = 256 PPI

The screen technology is called AMOLED and has superior contrast, color gamut, response time and viewing angles compared to the Droid’s LCD. The only advantage the LCD has is more subpixels due to not using the pentile arrangement. I’ve used a Galaxy S which had a lower PPI than the Razr and it didn’t look anything close to awful. Funny, no one else thought it looked awful either until all this 720p and pentile hoopla drama queens decided to run with. Btw, the Galaxy Nexus’ screen is also pentile.

LOL I totally agree with you there Mr McClane, and by the way loved your movies.  I have checked out the Razr and the Rezound side by side and although the Rezounds screen looked just a tiny bit better, I would never say that the Razr’s screen was bad.  To the naked eye the Razr screen is clear, sharp, bright and pictures and video looked great on it.  I never liked when a review site would zoom in so close to the screen that the pixels looked a quarter inch square, as if anyone using that phone could actually see that as they are using it.  I know that there are some screens that do have issues, color tinting that is off, or pixelation that is actually visible to the naked eye.  But the Razr is not one of those, the screen is good quality, and you really have to be looking for something under a magnifying glass to find fault with it.  And for those that say the GNex is so much better, when the screen is magnified and compared to the Rezound, the Rezounds is the best.  So just realize that if the screen looks good to you, then that is all that matters.  Who, other than review sites, is going to be looking at their phones screen under a microscope?

The Razr screen is really nice…I have a feeling you haven’t seen it. It’s pretty awesome

      • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

RAZR’s screen is actually pretty good.  Specs aren’t everything.

        • Anonymous

Agreed. Compared to some of Moto’s recent release the RAZR’s screen is a huge step forward.

    • Mannysaurus

To replace my OG Droid with a Droid 4 would be a shame. The brand name just isn’t what it was two years ago. The idea about not being a pretty phone but being a useful phone has died out. “z0mg guys2111 l00k our thin :) money pliz” is what they’re going after now. I’ll pick the Galaxus as my next phone and maybe give LG a try after that. Motorola’s rinse and repeat tactic is losing me. Release new phone, wait two months, release new phone, wait two months… sigh.

    • FPGA

I’m hoping this is true as well. Yes, I make use of keyboard shortcuts all the time too.

    • Paul S.

Excellent way to end the work week and start my Thanksgiving. Thanks Kellex!

      • stdlib

Yes, thank you Kellex. Next, can you please find out the processor, RAM and storage?

        • Anonymous

I suspect it has the same specs as the Droid RAZR.

          • GizmoDuck

That would be good for me. Hope to get the D4 this December.

        • Grant

          I hope it’s a global phone too.

          • Elkaos83

It will not be a global phone. No manufacturer produces LTE radio chips that support global GSM bands in addition to CDMA.

Only At&t may offer LTE phones that have global bands. However, their phones don’t use CDMA.

The D5, and phones released in 2013 will have global capabilities. Qualcomm will have a LTE/CDMA/GSM radio chip.

        • Bret

Battery capacity please. I really hope the battery is removable. I’d like to slap on an extended battery for boring flights and long days out.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jared-Elick/100000649334420 Jared Elick

Who knows, Moto expressed interest in a hidden battery…

          • Anonymous

supposedly another non-removable like on the razr.

        what’s a “work week?”

    • Anonymous

…and that’s exactly what they are expecting. Why people are shocked/confused as to why it’s coming out now doesn’t make sense. People with the original, who are not due for upgrade and still want a keyboard…here you go. D3 is 6 months ago old and doesn’t have LTE. Other than the Bionic which was an unusual circumstance, Moto’s rollout is pretty consistent.

It doesn’t really compete with the Nexus, no reason they can’t release same day, in fact the Nexus is behind schedule. Still have LG’s next offering yet too to go for 2011…(nobody cares)

Also D4 screen should technically be better than the RAZR, as qHD at 4in will have a better ppi than 4.3in

      • Ravnos CC

“Also D4 screen should technically be better than the RAZR, as qHD at 4in will have a better ppi than 4.3in”

yay?  I sure as hell hope it looks as nice as a 4.65 samoled @ 720p :D

        • Anonymous

Haha… Yea don’t get your hopes up.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jared-Elick/100000649334420 Jared Elick

It was rumored D3 and DX2 both had LTE capabilities, if you remember, and they were disabled…

The revolution 2 has some nice specs from what has been rumored. Hopefully that will be another good phone to add to verizon’s lineup.

    • mm777

i wore out my thumbnails on the og. i want a touchscreen for now. sorry for tuning on the og but those buttons are a pain when using irc/ssh after 5min.

The OG Droid has a terrible keyboard.  The D2 has a mediocre keyboard.  The D3 has a great keyboard.  And according to some people who’ve played with the D4, the D4’s keyboard is even better…

        • http://twitter.com/Doahh Josh Carroll

My Droid 3s keyboard was good while it worked, then keys started sticking/not registering.  Closed the keyboard, never used it again.
