Video: DROID RAZR Gets a New Online Rubbing, Boot Animation Included

motorola droid razr

It has been a few weeks since we got our hands on the DROID RAZR and were starting to miss this thin marvel of a machine. Thanks to a fine DL reader though, we have a new video to watch to bring back those NYC memories. While still looking as thin and beautifully designed as ever, we also get a look at the boot animation that may not have been seen by anyone previously. Another quick tour of the UI is included as well, along with the standard 4G LTE speed tests. Enjoy!

*Note – And the new site will hopefully be back shortly. A little bug that needs to be worked out before it can handle such a robust community. Thanks for being patient with us. :)

  • Dbarden31

The best way for me to decide is to give both the Galaxy Nexus and Razr a test run. I have 14 days to do so. Wish it was still the 30 though :/

P.S. hurry up and LAUNCH already geesh!

  • Anonymous

Sure is a sweet looking phone…wonder how the battery will hold up compared to the GN or Rezound? Has anyone heard??

    • Bionic

It will be the top of the 3 you mentinoned.  Galaxy Nexus is said to have battery life issues and we all know how HTC does with battery life.

  • Alexander Garcia

Nothing against Sammy or the Gal-Nex, but I prefer the form factor and the high grade choice materials and build quality of this bad boy over the Gal-Nex. ICS is awesome, but I’m willing to wait for the Droid RAZR to get it early next year… but that’s just me.

    • Anonymous

Agreed, I can wait for the ICS update.

      • Tyler

Once the source is up for the SGN, Android 4.0 should make its way to this device (among others) threw CM9 and a bunch of other ROMs. So the wait wont be as long assuming you root, but the official one you will probably have to wait some time for (expect a bunch of delays). I love Motorola’s build quality and i expect nothing but the best from the RAZR. Still getting the SGN tho.

        • Anonymous

Yeah, SGN’ll be good too.  And I wouldn’t know that first thing about rooting, and honestly, wouldn’t try in fear of damaging my new phone.  I’ll be the one waiting for the official one, and I’m fine with that.

      • Justin Kos

i herd a rumor that the razr will not be receiving ICS because theres too much bloat on the phone and not enough memory

        • Anonymous

Is the source of that rumor the one that also said that the Nexus would be out on the 3rd?

        • Bionic

That is some stupid bullshit.  This very website had an almost offiicial list of phones getting ICS.  Razr was right at the top

          • Dominick DeVito

It will still be slower than the G-Nex.

Why can’t you people just understand that. The Galaxy Nexus is better. Yes, a month from now they’ll be a better phone than the G-Nex. And so on and so forth

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=777939147 Johnny Sprink Clausen

No removable battery, Motorola’s custom UI, Galaxy Nexus coming out. Ha. Good luck with this phone, motorola

  • Therobotcow

Now thats a badass boot animation

  • Anonymous

Not real impressed. I wish he would have down a Quadrant test. We all know Data speeds are the best.

  • Anonymous

I bit the bullet…couldn’t wait any longer.  Just pre-ordered and got $100 off.

  • Anonymous

    That is fricking gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

The Razr is a sharp looking phone for sure.

    • Bionic

      pun intended?

  • http://twitter.com/strifejester Justin Ellenbecker

I want that boot animation….. NOW and I want the wallpapers from this thing.

I should have one a few days after launch as long as the current rooting process works on it if no one else gets them I will get the boot animation out of the phone and everything else for that matter but I am sure someone will do it within hours of release if it can be rooted with the current exploits.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackTaxi2d Henry S

great hardware, terrible bloated software. no thanks.

  • Sirx

I might end up with a Nexus, but a person shouldn’t honestly pre-order either of the “Monster Trio” until they are all released.  I’m looking forward to seeing whether the Nexus camera sensor is better than the other two, cause I am psyched for the native camera options (that one-sweep panorama is beastly!).

It’s basically Razr hardward vs. Nexus software (Why didn’t Google just combine the two???). It’s all gonna come down to battery.  Whichever one of these things has the fewest amount of people complaining about paltry battery life will be my pick.

    • Anonymous

Good point +1, I think Google probably will sometime soon as they finish the merger of Motorola Mobility into Google, that will give them the full play ground of great hardware and software like you stated. :)

      • Booboolala2000

They will still release some phones with motoblur for the business users. Plus all those nifty peripherals are pretty cool. Google will just make then better.

What happened to the new page?

And this, people, is why I hate memes. Because people will continuously spam them thinking they’ll be cool or funny if they have to spout the same old meme that was old years ago.

    • Guest

he’s a dick!  he can’t help it.  probably an abused child when he was growing up.  i’m just glad they are finally shutting him down.  i love it!!!

  • Anonymous

Honestly this phone looks like it performs quite well, the problem is it’s angular design is simply atrocious(opinion).

    • Anonymous

What are you referring to?  If you’re tlaking about the corners of the device, then I agree with you.  I would have liked it if they just left it a perfect rectangle.

  • Anonymous

That video sucks if you are showing a phone why play with a touchpad half of the video?

  • Df3rools

whyd the website change back? O_O

  • http://www.facebook.com/Upstreammiami Ronald Valdes

im a htc fan but this phone is sick!!!

  • Booboolala2000

That touchbad is buggy as hell. As a side note, probably not the best place to show a phone demo, on top of a running tablet. Who are these people? You have this guy, and that idiot with the pre production rezound. Ugh.

  • Zebra

Someone with one of these devices in hand needs to pull the bootanimation.zip and share. Best one yet.

i agree…awesome boot animation, i want it on my droid

Why does it look better the longer you wait? What about the phone is changing that makes it look better?

  • Billy Jenkins

    u 10 bro?

  • Billy Jenkins

I want to rub a razr

  • Anonymous

    Yes, yes I am. Completely.

    • Confused

I have the hardest time following threads on Droid-Life sometimes. The multiple tabbing just doesn’t do the job.

  • Anonymous

I can’t tell you all how overjoyed I am that whomever did this video cleaned the screen before recording.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LQNNJDZQIWIIHJWUIUV7R24XAM Aaron

I’m happy they didn’t do what most people do which is babble on the entire time and just swipe back on forth from screen to screen and basically do nothing.

  • Justen Castle

    This person was easily distracted.

  • Keith Sumner

Wow, that phone is really nice looking!

  • http://www.droid-life.com Gary

I can’t wait until mine comes in, I hope Vzw ship the ones that got pre-ordered a few days earlier than when they go on shelves, if not, then it’s pointless to pre-order lol.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, I agree. I actually called yesterday to ask about this. The rep said as far as we can tell, it will ship on the 10th, which means I’d probably receive it on the 11th. If this is the case, I’m standing in line Thursday morning and returning the pre-ordered phone when it comes in. I think I speak for everyone when I say we’ve waited long enough.

      • Matt2783

What? Waited long enough? We just found out about it a few weeks ago.

        • Anonymous

Clearly, Matt, we have a different view on what is “long enough”. I don’t think I need to defend my statement. I (and most of my generation) hate waiting and have been borderline spoiled by how quickly things come to us. At any rate, it’s just an opinion.

        • http://www.droid-life.com Gary

But when I pre-order a device, I don’t have to wait 14 days before i can get it, in that case, i could have used that money for something stupid, and waited to the tenth and got the phone the same day It came out.

  • shdowman

Nice boot animation. 1 minute to boot eh?

    • Keith Sumner

yep, Bionic too. Longer boot times for some reason, doesn’t really matter though.

      • http://twitter.com/timberwolfkw Kyle Wilkins

        More and more bloatware.

  • Anonymous

    LOOKS GOOD!

  • Anonymous

Is it me, or has the “Droid” line of phones been a joke since the OG? While the Inc had Sense on it, it was still a worthy device, but it seems as soon as the DX launched that it was all downhill from there. Now we have the various crap overlays jammed down our throats and Moto getting all soup-nazi on their boot-loaders. Locked boot-loaders and overlays should have been for the public that doesn’t care about rooting or pushing their devices to the limit, while saving the “Droid” line for the more “involved” smartphone fan. Instead we await the Galaxy Nexus, but just think had all “Droids” been as dev friendly as the OG we would be in a much different environment.

    • Keith Sumner

I think the Razr is an awesome looking device and I’m sure performance is top notch, to boot.

      • Anonymous

I agree, I love Moto hardware and wish they would give us a vanilla device, but until then my money is spent elsewhere. Maybe a Moto Nexus when Google takes over, wouldn’t that be nice?

        • Keith Sumner

That would be a dream, Moto’s build + Google’s untouched OS would be perfection.

          • Anonymous

Yup,  I would have loved if the Nexus came in the form of the Razr, with all of that metallic awesomeness

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LQNNJDZQIWIIHJWUIUV7R24XAM Aaron

That would be my dream phone.

    • Anonymous

Its verizon that wants the bl locked not moto….I do agree with you that if all the droids been unlocked it would be better, but to say the droid line has been a joke is a bit dramatic.

      • Anonymous

I certainly understand that they’re in the business to make money, and the flagship has to be accessible to the masses, and calling them all a joke is a tad dramatic I’ll admit. It just disappoints me to see what it’s become, I understand it, I just wish there was a better option for us 1%, hopefully the GNex fills that void left by the OG.

        • Anonymous

My point: I’m butthurt that I still haven’t loved a phone as much as I loved my OG Droid.

        • Anonymous

I’m right there with you haha big hopes for the GNex! It does suck that moto puts out these great phones that have to be locked down and constrained way below their potential

        • Anonymous

That’s exactly what the Nexus is for.  To fill in the “void” for all of you devs out there who root/rom etc.  The Nexus would be perfect for you.  I personally, don’t do any of that stuff, so I could go eitherway.

The Galaxy Nexus versus the Droid RAZR. This will be a tough decision, indeed.

Maybe I’ll just Two-Face the decision and flip a coin…let fate decide.

    • FortitudineVincimus

there is no fate but what we make

      • Anonymous

Well……regardless, the Galaxy Nexus and Droid RAZR appear to be top-notch phones, and it’ll be really tough to decide what phone will be worth owning more than the other. Honestly, I want to get both phones, but since I’m not made of money, I’ll just have to make that tough decision.

        • 1ofdakoolkidz

Can you name one Moto phone, unrooted that has not had a software issue, either straight out the box or with an update?

Once again…OG Droid. The first and last Droid that was motoblur free.

          • Anonymous

Uh….you missed the ppl that complained that Froyo was a disaster for the OG Droid when it first launched…

NO Android phone has ever been released that had no software issue…. The closest was the GS2. No smartphone period has ever released perfect software wise….none.

          • https://me.yahoo.com/a/LDBIW9k_npupnEAEfAB.iSlxcjskC6xSbL1rLg--#d3cd0 NotRelevent

No I didn’t. I have an OG Droid and don’t remember hearing about nor having any issues with Froyo on it. I mean sure it took forever to come, but I never had any issues with it.

          • Turboale

            OG Droid…

          • Anonymous

            No.

The OG Droid had software issues after updates to 2.1 and 2.2, especially 2.2 for some ppl.

But….EVERY Android to date has had software issues either out the box or after an update. EVERY recent smartphone has too. Dont think the iPhone didnt have its share of issues.

      • Adultswim87

Skynet will be the judge of that when we are all slaves.

      • Anonymous

Flipping a coin produces a random result.

        • Anonymous

It does…but it’s not like I’m flipping a coin to decide on the Galaxy Nexus versus a lame phone. Both appear to be great phones, so it all comes down to one or the other. I’m just allowing the coin to decide for me. lol

          • Pete

Well imo by getting razr u can have ics probably very soon but u cant have razr hardware by buyin a ics phone which is nexus.

          • Anonymous

The way it worked for GB was there was no GB build for any Moto device until the first official or leaked GB was put out by Moto.  So even with the SDK out there will likely be no ICS build for the RAZR until the first official or leaked rom is out there which will likely be weeks if not months.

    • Anonymous

It is so beautiful and has such a nice screen.

    • Fate

Hello EvanTheGamer, I heard that you we’re seeking an answer from me. Oh, btw, this is Fate. My choice for you is…the Galaxy Nexus! Enjoy!

      • Anonymous

WELL, hot damn, the Galaxy Nexus it is! YEAH!!

        • Fate

Glad I could help :) And btw, in 20 years I’m gonna ask you to build a baseball field in your back yard. Sounds crazy I know, but if you build it, they will come. Oh, and anyways, there will be an app on the Nexus phone of that year that will actually build it for you. See you then!

          • Anonymous

Great! Looking forward to it! That is unless Earth doesn’t eat itself before then.

        • 1ofdakoolkidz

Really…..you had to flip a coin to tell you this? Motorola is great with hardware they put everything but the kitchen sink in their phones, however their software is horrible and let face it your hardware is only as good as the software running it. The Galaxy nexus, even though it is not as thin will be the first Verizon phone with no Verizon BS on it not even the VZ logo, IMO, that is worth buying this alone.

          • Fate

            Tru dat!

          • Anonymous

No…I said, maybe I will…I never actually did it yet. lol

The more i see the RAZR, the more I am impressed with Moto for finally coming out with a device that’s like “WOW”  I am very much all in with the Nexus so far.  Hopefully it wont disappoint, I’ll definitely do my research and play with both devices in the end.

OG droid is 1st. and i bet there will be a VZW logo

          • Brandon Sobotta

I have been using the Droid 3 since shortly after launch, I will have to say at first I was hesitant to purchase it especially with all the bad things I had been hearing about the pentile screen. After months with the device, at first stock, then eventually rooted and then ROM’d. I would have to say the new Motoblur is actually decent especially after removing all the bloat. Also I have no real issue with the screen, I even came from an Epic, which had a beautiful screen. I went to a Incredible 2, and returned it for this Droid 3. It was hard at first moving from Sense to Motoblur, but now I love it. I am looking forward to eventually having ICS on this beast, and would probably get the RAZR over the galaxy, I couldnt stand the build quality of my epic, all the paint scratched off the bezel, and when i slid it out (and even when it was slid together) the screen felt like it was going to fall off. The battery life on my epic was also horrible, and now I can go a day and a half on on my Droid 3.

All good points. Hmm…like I said, tough f’n decision. Fate? Thoughts?

          • Fate

To me it’s hard to pass up the Nexus. All are good phones with good qualities. But honestly, the Rezound and the Razr are both probably going to have horrible batteries. The Thunderbolt and the Sensation we’re both supposed to be high-end great phones, but the batteries we’re horrible! And I see no reason why this one will be better. Plus, the screen on the Rezound will surely suck as bad as all HTC phone screens do. So a great phone with a that I can’t look at for very long b/c the battery is always about to die, and the short time that I have looking at it, I will do so on a horrible screen. The Razr, I think is a better pick than the Rezound. I mean, that thing is amazingly thin! You gotta love that! And I’m sure blazing fast, but the battery life on some of the recent phones like the Droid 3 and even the Bionic haven’t been great. And I know some people don’t care, but I just don’t want a locked down phone, and I would imagine that you don’t. I know there is the argument that rooting/romming/ect. doesn’t really matter anymore b/c phones are advanced enough, but just in case I get bored, then it would be a nice feature to have. You know that there are going to be Rom’s galore for the Nexus. I mean, anything that comes out either by Google/Developers/Carriers is going to come to the Nexus first, and also within the hacking/modding community as well. GNex will be first in line to get some love for some time to come. Furthermore, it’s going to come with Android 4.0. Plus, the camera quality as well as probably the screen itself are going to be better than the other two choices. Plus, IT’S A NEXUS! And not just a Nexus, but a Nexus on the best network! I know that there are pros and cons for all these devices, but for me the Nexus makes the most sense. I mean, I’ve dreamed since the days of the Nexus One of when I could get a Nexus phone on Verizon, and many others have too, and that day is finally (almost that is) here! It’s definitely the phone that I am most genuinely excited about! To me this is what the Bionic was supposed to be: We we’re all elated when word of the Bionic came out, and then we waited…and waited…and waited….and by the time that it came, it was simply on par with the norm. It took so long to get here that when it finally got here it was simply as good as any other newer phone. It’s a great phone and all and I wouldn’t feel bad about having it, but it was a let down in many ways. But I personally think that the GNex has that special something that just puts a pep in your step and a twinkle in your eye! Maybe it’s just me, but if I put aside all the clamor and opinions and get in my quiet place, this is the phone that I genuinely would prefer, and that by a landslide!

          • Jason

            settle down there Gilmore girl

          • Fate

            No can do Spice Girl.

          • Anonymous

Okay, okay…all great “thoughts”, Fate. It’s done. You’ve made up my mind(honestly and seriously) and I didn’t even have to flip a coin, ’cause, you, Fate yourself have made the decision for me. lol

Who cares if the RAZR is RAZR thin, that don’t really matter…the hardware/software/battery/whatever of a particular phone is what really matters.

And yes, I actually do care about my phone having an unlocked bootloader, because I truly want to make my phone MY PHONE and not locked down.

            Galaxy Nexus here I come!!

          • Fate

Good choice. Out of all the people that get one of these 3 phones, the ones who get the GNex will be the ones who never have any regret or, ‘maybe I shoulda got the …’ buyer’s remorse. There will be complaints about the other two, and probably not so much with the Nexus.

          • Anonymous

Not necessarily.  But it’s all in the eyes of the beholder I guess.

          • Fate

            Go on…?

Well as far as buyer’s remorse goes, it can go eitherway with any factor contributing.  Let me preface by saying that I like both the Nexus and the Razr (Rezound not so much).

But, let’s say the first time you drop your Nexus and are rewarded with a nice little ding, you can think to yourself, “Damn, I wish it had a metal frame.”  To some or most, it might not matter, but to me, it was selling point, since I’m always dropping my phone and I HATE putting after market cases on my phones.

My phone has a metal frame and it’s full of dings.

non removable batter is a big deal because the only way my thunderbolt makes it through a day is with the extended tumor battery. locked bootloader means non dev friendly which means it will be a pain in the ass to get CM7 support and the 2nd init exploit is cool and all but still not perfect.

How many phones out right now accept anything larger than a 32GB card?  Does the Razr even accept larger than a 32GB card and if it does do you want to spend over $175 just for a 64GB card?

          • Anonymous

Yeah…so true. No phones(to my knowledge) accepts anything larger than a 32gb sd card. But that’s not my issue. I know this sounds dumb(probably is), but my concern is that the Nexus only has 5mp camera. Although…I am hearing that the phone takes really incredible pictures…so maybe it’s not THAT big of a deal that the camera only has 5mp.

Just because you have more megapixels doesn’t mean you have a better camera. The camera and the software from ICS makes the nexus camera very good. Android as a whole hasn’t been good with camera’s. Gnex is first I’ve seen with no lag and taking great pics.

My Droid X(at 8mp) takes incredible looking pictures…but unfortunately only during the day. At night, not so hot.

But yeah…guess I just need to see the phones in action first.

The problem with DX is it only (for me) does good pictures in best of lightning and even then what I am shooting needs to be still.  It’s fine for last year’s phones, but I wouldn’t stand for it on a phone I am buying today.

          • Tyler

5MP is nicer than it sounds. First off your pictures will be smaller which means you can take more or take up less space which is nice when you don’t have an SD card. Second, it all has to do with the sensor. The sensor on the nexus is larger than most so it takes in more light and more detail (similar to the iPhone 4s) therefore taking a better picture, the need to fill it in with more pixels just make more room for grainier  pictures. Either way, the camera on the SGN will top any camera found on any Motorola device, you wont be upset with the quality on the RAZR that is to say but there is always room for improvement.

Yeah, I’ve waited long enough for the “next best phone”, so I’m waiting no longer and will be getting the Galaxy Nexus. 32gb is enough space, and if I need more, I’ll just have to delete apps, that’s all. Still cool that the RAZR will have 16gb internal and 16gb sd, then if you decide to get a 32gb sd card, that’s a whopping 48gb…but you know what, who cares. The Galaxy Nexus will offer so much more that will make up for that little known fact(no replaceable memory).

I agree, had the Moto dropped the locked/encrypted bootloader I could see myself with one of these even with the qHD screen and non-removable battery.  IMO it’s the best looking of the 3.

Just remember if you have posts bitching about locked bootloaders and then buy a RAZR you’re a bit of a hypocrite…

        Because this matters.

It does to me.  I don’t claim to represent the majority.

I was replying to you calling people a hypocrite.  It’s the internet.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a hypocrite to some nameless faceless ppl that don’t know you.

      • Jason

The beauty of the internet is you can bitch and complain about any and everything and be as much of a hypocrite as you want and it doesn’t really matter (your just a screen) lol

Any time spent on a tech blog is obviously not a serious use of time as clearly it isn’t a “necessity”, so I agree with you there.  I just like to point this out to the people who act like it is important.

          • Jason

I agree with you, I come here sometimes just to read some of the crazy shit people come up with and how pissy they get. It is a good waste of time at work when I got nothing to do, which is alot lol

Wouldn’t the site have to be completely down to count as “epic fail”?  But I would imagine you consider 3 word posts as “epic posts” as well.  I’m not bad, I’m just saying, bro.
