Video: Quick Hands-on with the DROID RAZR by Motorola

motorola droid razr

Motorola and the DROID RAZR have been everywhere today and rightfully so. This device is easily their best yet and will do whatever it can to compete with the Galaxy Nexus that will be announced tonight. We already ran a live blog for the Moto event this morning that you should check out if you haven’t, followed by a first impressions post and gallery. To round it all out though, we filmed a couple of quick videos that show off the speed of the device as well as our conversation with a Moto rep who loves Droid Life.

Fast. Thin. 4G LTE. Here’s to hoping they can convince Verizon to unlock it at some point. They also better get Ice Cream Sandwich on it in a hurry.

I’m a huge Samsung fan but Moto crushed them on this it pretty much has
better stats in every way and will get ICS in January.  The nexus didn’t
even remotely live up to its hipe your just paying for ICS.  I mean the
nexus has no removable memory, no gorilla glass, and a 5 mega pixel
camera.  Moto cast alone makes this kick ass phone worth it. Also the
Moto active is going to kick so much ass.  Oh and the Droid Razr has a
better screen with super amoloid qhd, and 8 mega pixel camera, and it
does have removable memory.  Ohh and Kevlar and Gorilla Glass?  Hell yes
I’ll be there on 11-11-11 fo sho.

    • Justin

Mega pixels dont mean anything, its the optics. Motorola makes crappy cameras. Also, you say the Razr has a better screen??? Galaxy Nexus has 1280×720 resolution SUPER AMOLED vs the Razrs 960×540. Galaxy Nexus has the 4460 OMAP as opposed to the 4430 in the Razr. “it pretty much has better stats in every way.” Not quite pal. Also, stats??? LOL

anantech also says the battery is removable…

      ???

  • Corthney

I was waiting on him to take a picture are the end. That would be my only deciding factor is how quickly it takes pictures. U did see how u can access camera from lock screen though.hmmm

  • http://twitter.com/Chanceman512 Keith

Hey Kellex, did you notice a difference in the screen from the Bionic and D3?

    • Anonymous

It’s a qHD AMOLED screen, it’ll be really nice.

  • Anonymous

Did moto partition to only allow 4 gb for apps again? My main complaint about the Bionic. Well, that and blur.

    • Bionic

Are you telling me that 4GB isnt enough room for your apps?  I mean seriously

    • Alexander Garcia

Aww… would you like some cheese with that whine? :-/

    • Anonymous

Huh?  I have a ton of apps installed on my Bionic and haven’t even hit 1 GB yet.

Coming from a ‘bought-on-launch-day-Droid-Eris’, this phone is looking great (traded in my 2 week old HTC windows phone – sue me, I love ‘Sense’). I’ve been impressed w/Motos implementation of the car dock, much better than my wife’s Thunderbolt dock from HTC and that accessory is a must for me.  From the perspective of a user, not a modder, this phone entices…

  • Anonymous

Does this support ANT+?  Just saw the MotoACTV App, and I have to wonder if it actually finally support ANT+?

  • Cree

This is nothing, but a rebadge Droid Bionic in a different form factor. I had the Bionic and the pentile screen is horrible.

What’s funny is that ppl talk about the iPhone being the same phone year after year, yet this is definitely the same phone as the Bionic. Cree

    • Bionic

Are you stuipd?  This phone has a super AMOLED screen.  Not pentile.  That alone makes it not even in the same ballpark as Bionic.

      I love my Bionic btw

    • Alexander Garcia

      Aww… wanna cookie? :-/

    • Anonymous

You are clueless. You need to go back to Atlanta.

  • Anonymous

I’m mad Motorola didn’t put that AMOLED “advanced” screen in the Bionic, otherwise though I couldn’t care less, I like the Bionic’s design and removable battery more.

    • Anonymous

Agree the only real advantage I see this having over the bionic is the screen. Non-removable battery is not the way to go no matter how thin they make it.

      • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

        Razr has over the Bionic
        Better screen
Faster CPU 20% higher clock speed.
        33% thinner
        Almost 20% lighter.

        Yeah, no advantage.

        • Anonymous

Most wouldn’t notice the extra clock speed, thinner and lighter ok still isn’t that much of an upgrade over the bionic. Sorry you got all uptight about it.

          • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

            Better screen
Faster CPU 20% higher clock speed.
            33% thinner
            Almost 20% lighter.

            Yeah, no advantage.

          • Anonymous

            Great upgrade of the bionic.

          • Bionic

It really depends on how you look at it.  If your one of those idiots that overblows the pentile screen hatred, then you will love this phone and think its so much better than bionic.

I personally do not think this phone is “better” than Bionic but this phone certainly has a market.

          • Anonymous

            Of course is better lol

          • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

Ha. Yeah, isn’t that much my ass. That’s sore losers say.

          • Anonymous

            Another clueless sheep.

I wondered how long it would take until your fanboy ass commented on something Motorola related.

          • Anonymous

Lol let it out samsung plastic fanboy.

          • Anonymous

            Haaha wrong again stupid fanboy:)

          • Anonymous

Go play with your plastic tool.

          • Anonymous

motorola is plastic too retard. stop pretending moto is any different.

          • Anonymous

Plastic your weak bones retard. Moto is known for their build quality.

          • Anonymous

funny your beloved bionic is plastic. Stupid fanboy

          • Anonymous

The battery cover is plastic, not the whole device gaylord.

          • Anonymous

The samsung isn’t all plastic either clown. Still will last longer than your moto

          • Anonymous

Gs2 is pure plastic. Samsung should of made the gs2 and the nexus like moto made the razor, slim with a good build quality. Moto wins again :)

          • Anonymous

Tmo gs2 isn’t all plastic it has metal band around it.

          • Anonymous

Its a great device, but it has more plastic than anything else. The razor will surpass the nexus you will see.

          • Anonymous

Doubtful it will surpass the bionic that’s about it.

        • Anonymous

33% thinner and 20% lighter on an already thin and light device is negligible.  I have no complaints at all about the Bionic’s size.  20% faster processor is nice but the device is fast as hell already, again negligible (and certainly a possibility to achieve through overclocking).

Definitely a far better screen though.

      • Anonymous

Yeah no removable battery is just dumb. My Bionic rocks. Pentile maybe not the best but it saves battery so I’ll take it. I just wish someone made a app for it to change the color temperature.

        • Anonymous

Razor is better. The bionic is the only moto device with an ok build quality. I have the Bionic by the way and i love it, but im realistic.

          • Anonymous

I tend to agree with you and I never said it wasn’t in my last statement. But until I see it the only thing i can see the razor has going for it is the screen. The spec’s for all intended purposes are the same. I saw the close up of the screen and it looks Pentile. I really do like the phone though, I think Motorola phones are the best.

          • Anonymous

Moto are the best. Im keeping my bionic as well. I have 2 lines so i can have 2 devices :).

    • Bionic

I totally agree.  I dont regret my Bionic at all.

    • Anonymous

I love my bionic, but the build quality turned me off a bit. This one will have it all.

  • Anonymous

    Integrated battery?? Next!!!

    • blue horseshoe loves…

      ^this.

  • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

This phone serves a different purpose and that’s why its locked….isn’t this the reason why nexus is coming to verizon so we have a device to mod and unlock?

  • Sputnick

If you could disable Moto’s interface i could overlook the lack of NFC and a removable battery.  But really, the days of removable batteries are over IMO….everything has to be thin I guess.  But all in all I think this phone will succeed….nice device.  But still…Nexus FTW!!

    • Bionic

I totally disagree.  i have 4 friends with iphones which obviously have integrated batteries.  2 of the 4 had to spend 3 hours in an apple store in order to get dead battery fixed or replaced.

Not only that but what if you want an extended battery?  Fail

  • Ganix

  • http://twitter.com/trophynuts trophynuts

wow you have to admit that Moto has been listening to the people since Froyo Blur….ESPECIALLY WITH THE ADDITION OF THE CAMERA FROM LOCKSCREEN NATIVELY IN BLUR……nice!!

  • Anthony C

I wonder if the camera works any better than the one on the Bionic.

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

ea i would like to knows this too

    • Anonymous

      +1

    • Anonymous

      Why start now?

  • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

People listen up…just because it doesn’t have a removable battery doesn’t mean when the phone locks up your sol….just like the xoom and other tablets there will be a hard reset button if the device locks up….on the xoom I think its volume down and power button and it will hard reset no matter what your doing or if it is frozen

  • Garmon

Non-removable battery, no nfc, no ICS, no on screen buttons. Any one of these is a deal breaker, together they make this thing obsolete on arrival.

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

some ics phones will have physical buttons..its up to the manufacturer if they want them or not

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

You are a short sighted moron.

      • Garmon

You sir, have cut me to the quick with your rapier like wit. Could you please outline for us your reasoning for my lack of foresight? What redeeming qualities does this phone possess that I have overlooked?

        • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

          Razr has over the Bionic

          Better screen
Faster CPU 20% higher clock speed.
          33% thinner
Almost 20% lighter. (lightest smartphone in current production)

          Yeah, obsolete.

          • Bionic

            Tell em dude

    • Anonymous

Agree, but the form factor is what intrigues me. Wouldn’t buy this particular phone, but it does give me hope for future Moto phones.

    • Bionic

your a dickless idiot.  NFC is in its INFANCY, ICS isnt even out yet, who gives a flying fck about on/off screen buttons?

    • Anonymous

Nexus will have cheap plastic, weak radios, weak speakers.

    • Anonymous

NFC?  Seriously? A gimmick more than anything at this point.  No on screen buttons?!  Yeah, gotta have those super serial on screen buttons because they’re so superior to standard capacitive buttons even though they’re static and just take up screen space.  Of course no ICS, it’s not even available on any of the Nexus devices yet, that’s what updates are for.

You have a legitimate argument for non-removable battery but you might want to wait to at least see what the battery life is for each device before making any judgments.

  • Josh Neal

With all of the stink the Bionic got about the power button being on the wrong side, I’m a tad surprised the re-location on the RAZR hasn’t even been mentioned yet. When I saw only the 2 ports and phones jack on top, I was wondering where it was. In the video it looks like it’s on the right side, near the top. Thoughts as to this being good/bad/indifferent?

This phone is growing on me…lets see what the nexus has in store

  • http://twitter.com/zer0cool96 Nick Daddona

no NFC is a deal breaker. i had seriously considered it before that fact. also. this will never see ICS, too much time spent on the MOTO applications

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

You think this won’t see ics your nutz if you don’t think this will be updated

      • KniteLyf

I’m sure it will see ICS about 4 times before they get all the bugs right by working past blur.

        • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

just like the thunderbolt…not just motorola has these issues….

    • Anonymous

Really?  Seeing that Moto has the highest GB phone upgrades that have happened….. now samsung with the facenate on the other hand……

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I would be concerned about updates if I had a Samsung given their track record with the Galaxy S. That’s why I’m excited about the Galaxy Nexus. You get a great phone with lightning fast updates from Google. Not to mention it launches with ICS.

      • Anonymous

I agree with you, moto’s line up are on gb.

  • EC8CH

I wanna punch that guy in the face who’s talking in the background.

I dunno why, I just do.

    • Anonymous

Same, and he sounds like he weighs in at about 350-400lbs. Loud and obnoxious.

      • Anonymous

I have no idea what weight has to do with it, but for some reason from only hearing his voice I pictured him at around that weight class too.

        • Anonymous

It seems like the bigger a person is, the louder their talking voice becomes.

I keep listening to the first second of the second video over and over.  That laugh is diabolical.  Have any of you ever seen “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”? Yeah…

no fun in that Spartkick to the face now that would be fun.

  • kretz

typical rep – doesn’t know anything about smartphones. what’s nfc?

    • Ryan Kortmann

he did hesitate but i think it was more for non-disclosure reasons.  he said ‘no NFC at launch’ hopefully meaning its in there and will be unlocked later.

      • Anonymous

We shall know real soon when someone tears one of these open

  • Tomgillotti

Looks nice. Would have been better about 6 months ago though. Nice phone, but no NFC, non-removable battery, on-screen buttons, and NO ICS… sorry Moto, but my former allegiance to you and your phones has gone by the way side and will probably be gone until Google takes over and gives us the NEXT Nexus… whatever and whenever that is.

Samsung… nice work (even though we still wait for what you will officially deliver). I’m excited for the Galaxy Nexus and hope to make that my phone for the next year or so.

    • KevinC

how would Motorola put ICS and no on-screen buttons on a phone when the OS hasn’t even been released yet?

The Droid Razr has the latest technology of any phone currently out there.

      • Nathan Hosford

it releases the same day as galaxy nexus and so will be obsolete the day it releases oh man that must be painful.

      • Anonymous

People will hate on moto regardless.

    • Anonymous

So since the phone is pretty much exactly the same as the other, yet somehow needed to release 6 months ago when ICS wasn’t even annouced as being the next OS…….makes sense….

Fast. Thin. 4G LTE. Here’s to hoping they can convince Verizon to unlock it at some point

I personally like having a removable battery because I always buy 2 and swap, so I don’t care about playing games with the brightness all the way up, cell service, etc. Just a thought…

    • http://twitter.com/lonndoggie Lonnie Brownell

Even more important…ever need to do a battery pull?  I sure have, on a OG DROID and a DROID Charge.  Sounds friggin’ difficult on this phone.

    • Greatscott9

      Yes. Well, maybe.

I own a 5-year old BB Curve. My new phone will be this, Nexus, or Rezound.

      My priorities:
Strength/durability (BB has survived 30 foot throw, 40 foot drop)
      Battery life
      Call quality/signal strength

I’m also super stubborn and refuse to buy a case. So yeah, from what I can tell the RAZR sounds like it was made exactly for me.

  • bigrob60

Kellex, you need a new video camera. I think you have worn out this one from all the review video’s over the years. Keep it up. :]

Better screen for RAZR is welcome, non-removable battery is a deal breaker. Welcome to 4 hr charging circles. Glad I didn’t wait for this!

    • Anonymous

4 hour charging cycles? and you got this from???

      • Yiannis

From continuous non-video usage (internet) of the Bionic’s standard and extended batteries. Non-removable battery forces you to get extended warranty for the second year of your contract.

        • Anonymous

Takes about 2 hours for me (the extended takes over 3 hours).

Of course you can’t compare it to the Galaxy Nexus/Nexus Prime but it looks fast and responsive. Locked bootloader or not it’s probably gonna be a decent phone.
