First, you need to realize that ppi is not the only part that matters. It also depends on how far away you hold the screen from your face, which is why a 1680×1050 monitor will look so good. But when I am holding a phone about a foot away from my face, I am personally able to see individual pixels.

But getting away from the ppi and distance formula, you also need to look at the significance of that resolution. It is the hd resolution that you will most likely be recording in, meaning that the display is capable of displaying every single pixel you record, making your videos look better.

So while I would agree that there are diminishing returns and that the transition from Qhd to 720p is not that big of a leap, I think that it will be significant as we trend towards phones with larger screens.

(And by the way, 134 ppi on a phone would look horrible by today’s standards)

Have you calculated the PPI of your computer monitor or HDTV? They’re far less than 300 PPI. My 1680×1050 20″ monitor has a PPI of 99 yet looks amazing (with an IPS panel). There is a point at which you reach diminishing returns and I’m here to tell you that over about 250 PPI is unnoticeable, anyone who claims otherwise is only fooling themselves, usually out of reinforcement to justify their purchases. Everything else is nonsense.

320×480 on a 4.3″ screen is 134 PPI, it’s not terrible but it’s also under 250 PPI so there is a noticeable difference between a 4.3″ screen with a 320×480 and a 960×540 resolution. There is no noticeable difference between 960×540 and 1280×720 on a 4.3″ screen (assuming both are RGB stripe instead of pentile as pentile decreases the number of subpixels in a non uniform pattern which is noticeable).

300 ppi at 10-12 inches is the point at which the human eye can’t differentiate the pixels. Plug the values into any ppi calculator and you will get the answer.

I would love for you to prove me wrong besides just saying it isn’t noticeable. Plus, if it isn’t noticeable, why don’t we just stick with 320×480 on our 4.3″ phones.

This is my next phone- unfortunately, coming from the OG Droid, I can’t imagine carrying around the Galaxy Nexus at a full length on almost 5 1/2 inches (what happened to the non-existent bezel??)
Since this phone is also running the latest OMAP processor, there is a good chance it will get ICS as well. Not to mention the Kevlar coating will make sure this beast lasts 2 years. Sorry Samsung, but if you would have brought the white SGSII to Verzion, you would have had my $.
