Reaction to Apple’s iPhone 4S Announcement?

Soooo, anything new in the tech world today?  Ahhh yes, the iPhone 4S.  While Apple execs stood on stage – sans Steve Jobs – to announce their latest and greatest, we all probably had a variety of thoughts run through our heads.  This post, will serve as a place for you to release them – keeping it clean of course.

What are we thinking?  Well, the first thing that comes to mind is, “Man, do I love Android.”  And why is that the first thing I think of after watching the i*hone 4S (had to!) unveiling?  Because Android in its current state, can innovate so much quicker than anyone else.

Apple and iOS have created a handful of ground breaking products in their time, but it no longer feels like they are doing that on the mobile front.  Android is built to be developed for at an incredible pace and it just feels like everyone is sort of playing catch-up at this point.  Look at iOS 5 and all of the new features that look straight out of the pages of Android 2.1:  notifications, voice actions, Google Latitude Find My Friends, etc. Or how about the dual-core processor and 8MP camera that Apple included?  All January’s news in the Android world.

Now, does Apple take the time to really polish up their products?  They most certainly do.  Their cameras are miles ahead of most Android cameras aside from maybe the Galaxy SII.  Their screen, although extremely small, is still one of the finest in the world.  I sometimes wish Android manufacturers would try to adapt to some of the quality standards that Apple has become known for.  Who doesn’t want better built products with higher quality materials?

With all that said though and even with this new phone announcement, it’s such an exciting time for Android. The next Nexus is just around the corner with the newest version of Android aka Ice Cream Sandwich. The holidays have more superphones lined up than we had imagined (Vigor, Nexus, DROID HD, etc.).  And quad-core processors in tablets will be here in no time.  Android, baby.  That’s my reaction.

Feel free to express your thoughts, but please, let us do our best to keep clean.

There was many rumors about an iPhone 5 but Apple would of course do what they always do 3, 3s, 4, 4s and I personally love both Android and iPhone. Right now I lean more towards a 4s then the Galaxy Nexus because i dislike the look of most Galaxy phones but I do like the OS. And some of you should really stop hating on Apple and the iPhone, if you don’t like the phone don’t buy it because all of you are acting like potheads saying drugs should be legalized and it makes you sound ignorant.   Android=iPhone  zuneyour dick

Well, it looks like Apple’s iPhone marketing dept still has the touch, even though their hardware dept does not. Preorder sales on AT&T look slightly better than the numbers for the iPhone 4 last year: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-08/at-t-says-preorders-for-new-apple-iphone-4s-broke-company-s-sales-records.html

The problem with android is Verizon and Motorola etc  ADVERTISEMENTS ADVERTISEMENTS ADVERTISEMENTS of which I am sick, of..Keep your droids until SOMEONE takes control !! I hate iphone BUT That’s EXACTLY WHAT I BOUGHT IO GET RID OF ALL THE CRAP WARE THAT NO ONE CAN REMOVE KEEP YOUR ANDROID VERIZON,and all you American consumers enjoy your crap ware for breakfast, lunch , dinner, and snacks..Dumbest consumers in the world!
As long as you keep buying THEY will keep adding crapware. PS  did you really need yet another crippled iphone on the market ??!! Android , after a year was far ahead of iphone because it wasn’t castrated by Jobs so another castration needed, not really…Control over carriers HELL YES!

After nearly two years and 3 different Android phones (Eris, OG Droid, Droid X), it’s time to move on.  I’m tired of cycling the X on and off multiple times per day to either unfreeze it or get it to speed up.  The OG Droid is another issue entirely….it’s dead slow and half the physical buttons simply do not function.  I hope Google gets a handle on the severely fragmented OS distribution model and polishes things up.  The competition is good for all.  I’ve been a HUGE Android fanboy for the past two years, regularly poking fun at friends / co-workers with their iPhones, but I’m tired of constantly feeling like I have to fiddle with it (custom ROM’s, widgets, rooting, etc.) to get a clean experience….I’m at a point where I just want the damn thing to work.  Take it easy, Droid-Life.

    Wait… What about 4g?

Well, now I have yet another reason to not get an i*hone. =P

As an iPhone owner I was completely underwhelmed. Although I thought Siri was pretty cool.

iPhone’s are trendy that is the key to their success…doesn’t really have much to do with the hardware etc…People line up for them and proclaim to friends I just got the new one.  These type of people will still flock every new product, that won’t change.  The more tech based people are the only ones who care about specs and open platforms.  I own Galaxy S and really like it, I need to be able to make changes to my phone, that’s me.  So there will still be this divide among smartphone users…maybe cause I am older (36), don’t follow trends and can never understand the appeal of iPhones and never will.  I mean I cannot stand the flat brimmed baseball caps people wear these days, they look horrible in my opinion…but my style will come back…just a trend going on now.  About these phones it is like an atheist vs a religious person, cannot use logic to fight someone who has blind faith….not worth the effort…competition is good.

I dont think it’s an age thing. I’m in my 40s. I find that iPhone just does what I want simply but effectively. I set my iPhone up to my work served and it works seamlessly, I set my colleagues S 2 up and it constantly fails. She has major issues with her messaging, updating has been difficult for her and she can’t understand why she might need an antivirus! I think each of us picks what suit. I like iPhones simplicity, that it, I don’t mind having one device that links everything I do at home, work and play without having to mess around. Like I said earlier though, I wasn’t impressed and now have to decide to I want to back to android and give up the easy and seamless integration iPhone offers me.

I love how you all act like you don’t care about the iPhone. But you do and man … you just love how Apple screw up. If anything, you are the same as the Apple fanboys you proclaim to hate.

  • Paullssocks

I don’t actually think Apple did do lots of asdvertising and hyping, as an iPhone user I was disappointed at just how quiet they were. I think the phone will be a quality phone, high end build quality. I am disappointed that they didn’t present something more innovative, different or unique. I have used many other phones and like apple software and hardware, this though was a real let down. Not sure what my upgrade will be now.

  • Anonymous

all apple had to do was increase the screen size to 4 inches and name the phone iphone 5. It would have been the biggest thing ever among the fanboys

  • I not to mention my pals were reading the best secrets found on the website and then quickly came up with an awful feeling I had not thanked you for those techniques. All of the young boys are actually as a result glad to learn all of them and already have really been taking pleasure in these things. Thank you for actually being considerably kind as well as for going for variety of wonderful issues millions of individuals are really eager to understand about. My personal sincere apologies for not expressing gratitude to sooner.

maybe its too early for me to read properly… but where is the question everybody should be asking: “no 4g apple?”

  • …and Siri will a white kid but not a brown adult for sure….

  • hatethanet

Leaders at Apple are pretty brainless without Jobs, imo. The average iPhone buyer doesn’t care too much about faster processors when buying the newest model. For them, it’s more of a vanity product. They care about showing off the “newest, hottest” gadget which doesn’t really apply here since it looks exactly like the old model. Not redesigning this new model WILL bite these guys in the asses.

  • iPhone4real

You have all been drinking the same Kool-Aid…. Any droid phone sucks to the bone! Apple forever will rule the market.

    • Anonymous

congratulations. After 18 months of waiting Apple gave you the same processor from the ipad2 and a better camera.  Big whoop.  Enjoy your new old phone

    • say that 100 times real fast and maybe you too will believe it.
i tried an early version of siri(which means buttocks in japanese) 🙂
i said why is the iphone 4s such a disappointment and a picture of the android green guy popped up. so siri is pretty amazing 🙂

  • Did Apple finally gave off this battle?

  • Ok we now know why apple is suing to keep all android products off the shelves because they knew that not already but in the future they still couldn’t compete.  I watched the blog of the conference with a very open mind and was really expecting even more of androids features to come than are there.  whats the weather great oh wait ill just look at my widget that i would say most android users have on at least 1 of the screens.   same small screen, still special connectors, look at the battery life chart , as we all know you can cut all battery charts by 25% at least from what i read i think the battery life looks to be pretty bad even with no 4g.  the speed increase they pushed during the presentation is laughable, you will see no speed increase on anything but att(or maybe overseas) and since it never hit any of those supposed speeds before im betting there is absolutely nothing new there.  Record send up to a server for recognition and return to phone hmm sounds familiar i hope google has a patent on that.
This is the first time i have ever seen apple announce a product and have their stock go down.
It seems to be a decent phone and many people will enjoy it and it has many features people will like.
and it will be fine for many as long as they hold it right of course.
But If you compare feature to feature theres only 1 example i can think of being from colorado.
the iphone 4s is the broncos and android is Greenbay.
there wasnt even a thought about who was getting their ass kicked , a bronco fanboy would pick out a few things that they thought showed the broncos were really competitive. a true sports fan could see how outclassed one team was from the other.
And i am a bronco fan as i am an android fan but very open minded and i can say if the iphone had a larger screen and 4g/lte etc. with the better camera it would be a competitor (not for me i use flash alot) But with orton and no running back or i mean a tiny screen and 3g in oct 2011 they really need an early draft pick for the iphone 5 to even become a wildcard team at this point.
No iphone lovers bashing needed.  if you like it great and i think youll enjoy it just fine.  i would prefer better cloud implementaion built in android(although easy to do just not stock) and ciri seems like it has promise. but what was shown wasnt impressive.  “i want to wake up at 8 am”  “set alarm clock to 8am”  “find me chinese resturants”  “chinese resturants” use google maps.  is there really a difference here??
but it says beta so well see where they go with it.
to conclude the price points seem ok to me.  i have always thought apple has over priced their products and the price points here just seem very reasonable for the times.  im sure youll be able to find the 16gb version for 150 on cantract which i think is very fair and that surprised me.
Lets hope october 11 isnt just as disapointing.

  • Taco

Why does apple praise themselves on being number 1 in sales on the iPhone? All they have is JUST ONE PHONE!! What other options are they really giving people? How come they don’t do a comparison between iPhones and Android phones instead of any single android phone. Their heads are so big!

  • Mosskingpin

I hope this doesn’t cause a delay in releasing the nexus prime. Now that the pressures off

  • Wildy85

Couldn’t have been happier to be an Android User. PRIME and VIGOR are my next two choices, since I have the luxury of having a personal and work phone.

I kinda had a hunch the next iteration of iphone would not be anything major but rather an upgrade, however significant, from the current model. But still i was hoping apple would come with something more worthwhile. I guess I had higher expectations from cupertino giant than the average joe. Or did I?
Either way , these are exciting times.

  • Wildy85

Being a tech enthusiast and a verizon employee , I couldn’t be happier to have such a great variety of phones around.

  • Taco

I agree with most comments here regarding the 4s just being slightly polished up than the previous.
As for this new and improved antenna, it’s only gonna be as good as the network provider allows it to be. Right?
Of course they have it on there website in small print…”Availability and network speeds depend on the carrier’s network.”
Why did they fail to mention that? They really emphasized that it’s gonna push out a LTE equivilent of 14.4Mbps? On what network would this be on? At&T? That would really be your only option. Even than AT&T doesn’t have the best coverage out there… It’s not gonna “be magically a million times better and faster” with JUST a nice antenna. Take a look at this…http://gizmodo.com/5846655/att-iphone-4s-will-be-faster-than-verizon-and-sprints

Without Verizon’s LTE, why even bother? Just a nice camera? It’s a phone! Faster processor? Been there done that! Siri? Really? Go get some real friends that will talk back to you. iCloud? I love my Google Music, Photobucket, Dropbox, etc.

  • Legoturte92

I just want the I*hones Screen and camera in my Bionic

  • Towel73

Smartphones are becoming a mature technology. I can see from a business standpoint why Apple is going to milk this cash cow as long as possible. Incremental improvements versus revolutionary changes are going to be norm for both iPhones and Android devices.

You took the words out of my mouth kellex. Nobody can compete with ios when it comes to the cam and display.

  • Anonymous

I think everyone is missing the bigger picture. This phone is going to be really GOOD. You have to realize this phone will be optimized to use dual-core meaning its probably going to be faster than any android phone on the market modded or not. The camera will probably be digital camera quality. Yeah it may look like the same crap but this phone will be amazing for apple fans.

    • I agree with a lot of people on here in saying, I’ll just bring my real camera with me…  And I think you missed the point.  Everyone out there wanted the Iphone 5…  something to directly compete with any of the android phones out or coming out for at least 6 months…  but you got a slightly faster processor and other minor tweaks…

This Good phone is not the Great phone everyone expected…

      • Anonymous

I’m in no way an apple fan but I have to give credit where credit is due. This is a brand new phone period. It may have specs similar to the average android phone out there but tell me what phone utilizes dual-core? Not my Droid 3. Its running iOS5 which is basically the most important aspect of the whole thing. NOT THE LOOK. Don’t get too caught up in aesthetics because the point is this will be a great PHONE.

  • Can we go back to the posts where everyone was boasting about the i*phone 5…  Cause I want them to eat crow

  • Benjamin Landwehr

Disappointed.  Would have liked to see something more innovative than add stuff that’s been out.  A nicer camera is nice, but not a reason for me to buy a new phone.  If I really want good pictures, I’ll use a real camera.  Even the iPhone doesn’t compare to that.  But for quick use and if I want to capture something real fast or take some memorable pictures with my friends, a phone is fine.

Android is definitely the more powerful of the two operating systems. It is able to run on more hardware, it is far more flexible than IOS and it allows users to customize their systems to what they feel is best suitable for them. That said, because of fragmentation, the very wide range of hardware running hardware, and hardware manufacturers and wireless vendors loading custom ROMs and crapware, a great many Android phones are not quite what they could be, and many have become frustratingly slow. IMHO the trick to android is to stick to the pure Google experience variants (Vanilla Android), on the most powerful hardware you can find. Then you will be assured of a relatively trouble free experience that you can modify to your liking and without vendor software that can’t be uninstalled or UI overlays that might conflict with other software..

IOS on the other hand is nowhere near as user friendly. What it is is simple and incredibly stable because it is pegged to very specific hardware and because apple places severe limits on how the software functions with the hardware and how users can modify it, you end up with a system that is beautifully consistent and stable. The systems ends up not being as advanced, but from a USER POV it is generally a friendlier and more reliable environment in the long term. That, however was not the question being asked.

Apple puts the A in LTE because for them LTE will by LATE, LATE, LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chesshine5000

Android Sucks!  Ok, well they don’t suck, but they are super glitchy.  I have been all android since the OG, and they all glitch up regularly.  I mean, be honest Android users, they are buggy.  I have the Thunderbolt now, and it is nice, but still it glitches up, and doesn’t always work when I need it to, plus it is MAD power hungry.  I ain’t by any means saying that App!e is the way to go, but it would be nice if Android could take all of these AWESOME features like widgets for instance, and actually polish them until they work seamlessly, instead of just doing more and more and more.  Cmmon guys give us some more quality!

    • Benjamin Landwehr

Really? ..If you’d of said this in 2009, even 2010, I’d agree easily.  My OG Droid was great, but boy was that glitchy.  But not lately.  My Droid 3 has had ZERO problems besides few force closes.  And a lot of my friends newer phones are the same way.  Sure, there are more bugs then iOS has, but iOS allows fewer stuff on it.  But those “bugs” aren’t that bothersome anymore because they’re not to noticeable.  Newer models definitely don’t have the problem too much anymore man.  So, I don’t know if you’ve been using lower end models or old models, but that’s not really the case.  If it was, I’d hate Android.

And please people, don’t say iPhone does not force close.  My brother has it.. it does.  The difference is, Android tells you while iPhone’s apps just randomly shut down so you’re like, “what the..?”.

  • Anonymous

My first reaction was to see if it had LTE on Verizon, and then to shrug and go back to enjoying Android when I found that it doesn’t.

It sure is funny to read the Apple fanboys’ defense of this lukewarm upgrade, though.  “I’m glad it doesn’t have LTE, because everyone knows that LTE drains batteries!”  Spoken like someone who’s never experienced LTE speeds.

  • How could they not include 4G LTE?  Now i*hone users will have to wait another year for that goodness.

  • En28so

They should have at least put a bigger screen on the new iPhone and changed the design a little.

    • hatethanet

Agreed. a 3.5″ screen on a “multimedia” phone is no longer adequate in this day and age. A new design woulda made it sell like crazy. The addition of LTE with no other changes on next year’s model woulda made that one sell like crazy.

  • hatethanet

Check out this poll at PC Mag: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2394111,00.asp#fbid=dXl9ZX7XK3j . We’ll really see how good Apple’s marketing dept really is if they can make this mediocre upgrade a smash hit.

  • Clawson8282

While I was waiting for 5 months for the Bionic, yes I was waiting for the Bionic and yes I am extremely happy with it, I had frequent access to my father’s iphone 4, yes I said my father’s. With complete honesty I can say that the iphone 4 was the buggiest piece I have ever used. Constant forced closes, even from respectable Apps, the camera app locking up, always having to restart. Now on my first Android phone things run much smoother and the complexity and customability is uncomparable. No contest

  • ybclew

Are you serious.   Apple announced the dual core A5 last november and launched it with the iPAD that launched prior to the new android models and they announced the processor back in November. I agree on the notifications system however, the A5 processor is still faster then snapdragon used by android.  the only item that does not beat the other phones on the market is the screen size.  Other then that it is an all new phone.  can someone here tell me the difference in the form factor of the galaxy phones other then the screen size.   lets look at them spec for spec and not just for the form factor.   I for one am ecstatic.  same screen size same size phone, i won’t feel like i am caring an kindle in my back pocket for a phone, and iCloud  that type os service is subscription based only with android.

  • Bioniccommando4231

Did AAPL just surrender to Android today? The largest company in the world had 16 months to work on this and all they came up with is a polished camera and software bits android has had for two years?

I think I just saw AAPL become MSFT.

I was hoping for a good challenge to drive innovation. Other than the siri, looks like apple just gave up. Amazing.

  • I am now on the fence. I have owned an iPhone since its first release in 2007. So far I have gotten every model as soon as it comes out. Today I am waiting to see how this model stacks against the Nexus Prime. Android owners have some cool features now that I have been patiently waiting for for some time on the iOS front.

iOS5 is really going to have some crazy must have features to keep me eating the forbidden fruit. Too little to late is my fear at the moment. This past year has been a huge migration of my digital life to the cloud. iTunes match sounds cool; but what would I need it for if I have spotify now?  With iCloud I can have my documents and pictures synced. All that is great but now that I have a Macbook Air i find that I am in the habit of just saving to a cloud drive by default and dont need store things on my onboard memory. After all when i go to work i can only use a company machine. Cloud drives bring my content to the company machine better than iCloud will.

In the end the new Siri feature is the only thing that might keep me. That being said I really just want some damn widgets already. Google Ao is just around the corner and I am watching this very closely. Apple you are in danger of loosing a fanboy. Can you sense the disturbance in the force?

  • Anonymous

I am very meh.  This is Apple catching up to the pack but not exceeding it.  Which is good, their phone is one of the better built ones in the world, its screen resolution has yet to be equalled (which will soon be changing with the 720p screens coming out), it’s camera is still in the top 3 (and this is before today’s upgrade). There is very little that Apple absolutely needed to do.

But I am disappointed that the form factor didn’t change and that the screen stayed the same size.  The iPhone 4 and 4S are the most striking looking phones out there, but their glass contruction is the ultimate example of form over function.  It should really be some type of metal or soft touch plastic.  And now a 4″ or greater screen is a necessity for me, I can’t go back to 3.5″. Which sucks because I was kind of looking forward to going iPhone. Hopefully the Nexus delivers.

  • JediWebGeek

As far as Siri is concerned, I’m not aware of anything remotely close to this functionality on the Android platform. If I’m wrong, please correct me. And I have a feeling that if Android fans found out their next phone was going to have a tablet CPU in it, they’d be freaking out, but I could be wrong.

    • Colin Zack

Uhhh, the dual core processors in most phones are better than the Tegra processors in the first batch of android tablets right? Someone correct me if I’m wrong

Agree apple seems to be doing what rim did years ago. Apple makes a great product but how long can you rely on the same stale interface and expect people to not want more with the options from other platforms that they have?
