Google+ Update Brings Mobile Hangouts, Messenger with Photos, and More Customizations – Opens Sign-Ups to All

Google+ will receive a massive update today that brings with it mobile video Hangouts (2.3+ users with front cameras), a Messenger section with photo sharing to replace Huddles, and the ability to customize a ton of stuff.  Oh, and to make these announcements even better, they are opening up G+ sign-ups to everyone!  If you for some reason were not able to secure an invite after 3 months, then feel free to jump on over http://plus.google.com/ and join in on the fun.

Some of the other new additions:

  • Edit your profile photo. You can now put your best face forward, from where you happen to be. Just visit your profile, click edit, and you can choose or take a new picture.
  • Customize your notifications. Some notifications may be more important than others, especially when you’re on the go. Now you can decide which ones you see (or not) on your phone.
  • Make some room. If you’re taking lots of photos, or installing lots of apps, then internal storage can sometimes shrink. That’s why you can now move the Google+ app to SD storage on Android devices.
  • Improved SMS support. Users in the US and India can now post to Google+, receive notifications, and respond to group messages via SMS (with more countries on the way). To start texting, just verify your phone number in Google+ settings.
  • Improved +mentions support. To add someone in your circles to a conversation (or simply get their attention), you can now +[their name] inside a post or comment.
  • +1’ing comments. When you read a great comment in the Stream, you can now +1 it directly from your iOS device (with Android coming soon).

The exhibit is  called "Picasso to Koons: Artist as
    Jeweler." You probably will
    recognize the names of
many of the more than one hundred artists  represented at the barbour
    show. Names like
    Georges Braque, Max Ernst,  Alexander
Calder and Salvador Dali, Robert Rauschenberg and Louise Nevelson and barbour

One hundred thirty of the rings, necklaces,
brooches are from the collection of art expert Diane Venet. She helped
    to set  up the exhibit.

      Ms. Venet
met French sculptor Bernar Venet about twenty-six years ago. A short
time  later, he gave her a piece of quilted
designed as a ring. The ring celebrated the fact that they would soon be  married. Ms. Venet said it was the first
    piece of barbour
    quilted jackets
artist’s jewelry she had ever had.

      As time
passed, Bernar Venet exchanged pieces with mens barbour
    artist friends
    who sometimes created jewelry.  Ms.
Venet’s personal collection grew and grew, and she decided to exhibit it  with works of barbour
    the other artists.

Hotchner is the director of the Museum   of Arts and Design. She  says the ladies barbour
considers jewelry as one of the most important forms of art today. She
notes  that a piece of jewelry
    kid’s barbour
is not  just a small version of a sculpture.

  • Still can’t use it due to age limit 🙁

  • Do hangouts work on tablets?

    • actually it does, just hung out with myself…. wow… that shit is depressing

      • Mobile hangout confirmed working on Transformer and Droid 3.

  • Anonymous

God Damn. You have to be over 18 or something. To bad I’m 15.

  • Ryan C

however you still have to be of a certain age (18+)

  • Spencer9663

I still have to be 18 to use this… I am 17 and my birthday is in April, at this rate it will still be private by the time I turn 18.

  • Josh Flowers

    seriously? can’t create a Hangout–only join one?

just go ahead and combine Talk&Hangout already!
call it, “Loiter”, and you will win.

  • What about huddles in the website? It would be nice not to have to type everything out on my phone when I’m sitting at a computer anyway.

  • Guest

    Those are some bushy-ass eyebrows.

I dont see video hangouts on the Bionic.

    • Giant Kn10

I don’t see hangouts either.  Maybe we can only join a hangout, but not start one?

So when is Disqus going to start allowing +1’s on comments?

  • Anonymous

    ,.. awesomee ..
I just got a $827.89 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HTV for only $251.92, they are both coming tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.
    I use http://alturl.com/vuz3b

No Video Hangouts in the update, unless i am missing something

    • Anonymous

I dont see it either….wtf!  LOL!

    • Unexpected62

It looks like you can only JOIN an existing hangout when seeing it in your stream… so I guess that means it must be started on the desktop.

      • babadush

That’s like inviting yourself to a party

  • where the hell is gingerbread for my thunderbolt? :-0 I’d like to try the hang out from my phone

    • Anonymous

Exactly Joey and now they are talking ICS…. I did upgrade my Tbolt using the leak and everything works great.  with one exception there is an issue with the camera and the date, but there is a fix for it.

    • Daggy1985

It’s to be here this month!! Of course we only have ten days left, so maybe it will be here by April, don’t worry HTC is working tirelessly to get the update out, right after they get done updating every other phone that came out before and after the thunderbolt.

G+ is gonna have a hard time taking off if they can’t find a way to attract women to the site.  Facebook is all about the social circles, and for a lot of people, and for a lot of guys, no girls = no go.

Facebook just added the equivalent of circles as well, and on top of that, the preconfigured some based on networks and groups….cmon google, step it up!!

  • RonsterWVU

First article i’ve cared about is so long on Droid Life..

  • Eric

Google + will never beat FB. It doesn’t appeal to the masses. Only one person I know uses it. On the other hand its a great social networking site for techies. So it won’t die anytime soon either.

  • Jason

It will take some time but I think G+ will eventually take over. I have tried to get some of the family over to G+ but with everyone on FB it is hard for them to switch over. They need to advertise.

  • Anonymous

Google Hangouts are the best. Now about that 2.3+ requirement…

  • Brady McEwen

“+1’ing comments. When you read a great comment in the Stream, you can now +1 it directly from your iOS device (with Android coming soon).”

Wait, so they added this support to iOS BEFORE Android? WTF!?!?!?!?

    • Anonymous

Guess it makes sense….a large subset of Android users are Google fans and are already sold on the idea of G+.  Gotta suck those A*ple users in.

      • Anonymous

        That’s exactly it..

    • Blood

At least it shows that Google is not bias like some fruit companies.

  • I’m really afraid that opening it up now is too late.  The excitement and buzz that was all over the internet when Google+ was just announced has dwindled, and now Facebook has copied a lot of Google+’s innovations and implemented it themselves (albeit poorly).

Sure, it’s big with techies, but right now it’s going to take a lot more than mobile hangouts to get the average person to come over.

One way is to target Facebook where they’re the weakest: their mobile apps.  Even though Zuck claims it’s one of Facebook’s priorities, it’s clear they have no vision or plan for the mobile platform so getting things like auto-uploading images alone is probably a little bit beyond their skill level.

I remember reading an AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the Facebook Android team on Reddit and they were utterly clueless about Android. Someone asked why they don’t make use of Intents when tapping on Facebook links in Gmail and the Facebook team didn’t even know what Intents did!

Then again, Google’s apps aren’t the greatest either, but their + app is pretty good.  If they can focus on that (and almost make the desktop site secondary) then they’ll have a strong chance to bring people over.

  • Anonymous

until more of the people i interact with use it, its just a nice idea and nothing more. i like a lot of aspects of + but it just goes unused on my phone/computer

  • Cory

STILL not available for Google Apps accounts? Really? Lame.

    • Yeah, no doubt!  I’ve been holding off since I don’t want duplicated profiles, once they implement it, but damn…

  • Anonymous

Awesome.  Looking forward to trying the mobile hangouts.  Guess it’ll have to do, too, until Talk with Video comes to the D3…

    • Unexpected62

I got it on the leaked update already, its sweet. Don’t have to root.

  • Anonymous

maybe with the update itll finally lift off the ground..or, maybe not.
