Report: Samsung Galaxy S II Not Making Its Way to Verizon

I know, bad news on a Thursday morning.  According to the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney, Big Red will not be carrying the Samsung Galaxy S II…at all.   And I hate to say it, but we mentioned this very idea earlier in the week and are not surprised at all.  With our sources claiming that the Samsung Stratosphere is nothing more than a keyboarded Epic 4G variant, and with rumors swirling that Verizon will carry the Nexus Prime (made by Samsung), the SGS2 in their lineup made no sense.  We should also point out that we have pinged our sources numerous times over the last couple of months about the SGS2 on Verizon and they always come back empty.

Verizon would not elaborate as to why they would not be carrying the device, but did mention that they “have an extensive portfolio that offers customers a great variety of devices, including the Samsung Droid Charge.”

In related news, the Galaxy S II will find its way to AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint.  Each carrier’s variant is expected to be announced on Monday in NYC.

Thoughts?

This is literally just because Motorola couldnt get their act together on the bionic, wasted so much time, and VZW doesnt want a significantly better phone coming out right when their flagship does. The bionic is a phone that is over 6 months behind every other carrier. Im holding out for the vigor. Mother f***ers

    • Dash Speeds

Nope, the original Bionic (Etna) was scrapped, the current Bionic (Targa) uses top-of-the-line hardware and was always slated for a August/September release. Have fun with your overclocked A8.

Edit: And by that I mean the Bionic runs an OMAP 4 A9 processor that crushes A8 architecture.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Dash is correct people see 1.5 and go ape sit when in reality it is using an A8 which won’t help battery either

        • Anonymous

Plus it is HTC and we all know how they are with battery life.

    • Anonymous

It’s funny that people treat the Bionic like it’s the same exact phone that was shown off at CES.  This is completely different!  Don’t be surprised if the Vigor ends up being slower than the Bionic buddy.

  • Carlito Pr787

Lol keep waiting for the sgs2 now lmao now they gonna hop on the prime wagon

  • Kyle Lehman

I just died a little inside.

With all of the rumors of the next nexus device coming to verizon I doubt people really cared about the SGII, also would it be so different between the carriers like the SGI was.  Their is a reason why the fascinate didnt sell and got shelved pretty quick….Samsung FLOODED the market was phones that were not all that impressive, and each carrier had a different querk.  The same will be with the SGII just watch.  Does any other carrier have any phone that touches the Droid Charge, T-Bolt, X2, Bionic, D3 just to name a few.  BTW, not a fan of HTC products, T-Mobile has a nice HTC lineup but CRAPPY network

  • http://profiles.google.com/mediogringo Dan Carter

Wow Samsung totally screwed the pooch with the SII in the US. First they take forever getting it here, then it’s not even going to land on the largest carrier. I was ready to buy one when they announced it (and I’m an HTC guy) but now I’ve just given up. I’m waiting for the Nexus Prime.

  • Pete D’Antonio Jr.

My OG is on it’s deathbed and this just made my Bionic choice that much easier.  There is no way I can wait for vaporware when my phone is the way it is.  This blog is full of people waiting for the next thing but they never actually buy a damn phone.  HTC vigor? HTC hardware sucks comon and the Prime isnt even confirmed for Verizon.

Bionic will be the best verizon phone until the holidays

    • Dash Speeds

      So much yes.

    • Larry Jr. Lima

I lol’d at your “deathbed” comment because I can relate to it. I’ve never had HTC and willing to give the Vigor a shot, but the Bionic is very tempting. Or I can hold off and wait for the Prime. I mean, my OG vibrating whenever it wants to doesn’t seem to be that much of a bother :

    • Anonymous

My OG is still running strong and I will probably hold out for the Prime,,,,

  • Anonymous

At least now we can end the stupid Bionic vs. SGS2 feud…

  • Busted327

After more than 2 years, my OG is barely hanging on. I have always taken care of
it, but it has been used hard. I hope it lasts till the prime shows up,
otherwise I will be forced to roll a Bionic : /

    • Bullet Tooth Tony

The OG isn’t even 2 years old yet, yours must be special…. :-p

  • Murphy

I’m going to pretend I didn’t read this.

Droid Charge does not equal Galaxy SII

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

They both made by Samsung, so what’s the difference?

I was gonna get the bionic regardless.. i dont know if i can handle a phone that has no hdmi or led notification and no hd dock to browse online on my hdtv anyway.  Motorola really made their new blur (motorola applications platform) nice and smooth and subtle compared to older devices.. i can live with the pentile screen cuz i have compared and noticed it only when my face was about 5 inches from the device and having to really look for it.  I just cant get over the 300 price but i should have a discount coming since i had my OG droid.. and i bought droid x retail price.

  • Anonymous

Everyone keeps referencing the Prime, that it will be coming.  There is no….no confirmation of this anywhere.  So someone saw it at Verizon, great…..what does that really mean?  Nothing.  Verizon has skipped the past 2 Nexus phones and I really don’t see that changing.  Sure it is nice to dream….but its just not in the cards.  However, I would joyfully eat my words as I have a Droid 1 and am continuing to hold out for a worthy successor…

  • Adios

I can’t take another post where you take credit for “mentioning an idea”.  You guys post every possible permutation of a rumor, and then take credit for the one that’s right.  You often go with one rumor until the very end, flip your stance, and then still have the audacity to take credit for being right.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

I have to agree.  You can’t speculate on every possibility and then take credit for whichever happens to be true.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Isn’t their job to post rumors and updates to phones? This is a android blog correct… I personally like that they post what they heard because if they didn’t then it would be very boring around here…all sites do it to, Phandroid, androidcentral etc….just 2 days ago Phandroid posted that Korea has the verizon lte and first pics lol common its fun…..I think they should post rumors….if I wanted factual news I would go to cnn

        • Anonymous

I think what he was saying is that posting rumors are fine but when you post a ton of rumors and then say one thing and a week later say well I knew it was this one all along without mentioning that just a week before they were saying the opposite.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

I’m glad at least one person is still able to read.

         No response huh Kellex?

        • Jasper

What in the hell are you crying about?? What did Kellex take credit for??, all he said was “And I hate to say it, but we mentioned this very idea earlier in the week and are not surprised at all.”

He said they mentioned the idea and are not surprised at all. OMG, he is taking credit for predicting this…
Get over it, we all know VZW is typically great network, late on phones…

Rumor: Droid HD, HTC Vigor, Nexus Prime, LG Rev2.. be patient or switch carriers. Your choice.

Agree they post 10 different rumors and then say see we told you this would happen when the other 9 rumors were wrong. Not to mention only give credit to other sources about half the time.

    • Mctypething

Great point. How about all of the other rumors you posted speculating on the Verizon version of the GSII? You can’t post everything as a rumor, flag it as a rumor, and then when one happens to pan out say, “wait, we told you about that.” What a joke.

  • Coaste1313

Im going to have to get the bionic. I have an HTC Eris and that thing is falling apart on the inside. I don’t even have the market anymore. One day It just disappeared. I know I could wait till October for the prime but with delays on every major phone it will probably be December by the time it cones out. The bionic isn’t that bad and my area should be getting 4g in october

OK wait…so why did I get Samsung Galaxy S II Ads in my email then? Did I sign up for those maybe? and it had nothing to do with Verizon all along?

What a fail. That Nexus prime better be out soon then. I don’t think the Droid Bionic will dissapoint at all. At least we know the Droid Bionic will likely have a notification light!!! My fascinate doesn’t and do I miss it so. When I’m in the library or at school, I have no clue if someone’s tried to reach me unless I wake up the phone and check. A time waster for sure.

No the revived Moto Razor/Android phone is the Prime…: )

  • mtbhk44

I am so sick of these carriers holding us hostage w/regards to what phones we can and can’t purchase.  They are phone companies…can you imagine being told what phone you can/can’t hook up to your landline at home?  Why this model of the wireless providers being in charge of what phones can/will be utilized on their network was allowed to begin with, is beyond me.  This is a big fat fail…

The alternative would be to adopt what the rest of the world outside north America does, but you have to pay unsubsidized prices for all phones. Are we ready to pay $700 to $1000 for every new cell phone?

  • Buckgrad

    Screw the Charge. Big mistake…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T3NRV5OOEQS5Y52QG6WG6SMTEU ML

Verizon has to sell Bionics and Charges, so while it sucks that they won’t sell the SGSII, I guess it makes sense for their partners.

The key question is whether the Nexus Prime will arrive with LTE soon.  I hope so, but everything always seems to be delayed on Verizon.  Hope that people are happy with their Bionics in September because that may be the best phone Verizon will have for several months.

    • Anonymous

they are getting the iphone 5 also.

      • Anonymous

Lol. You’re posting in a Verizon-Android-Droid product line blog.

        • Anonymous

Yeah but it is coming they said the bionic would be the only one for months.

          • Anonymous

I don’t think any non top-shelf Android phone registers here as a choice. You see holy wars going on between fans of Android OEMs here. Non android phones are dismissed. I mean even locked bootloader androids are blasted here. We’re beyond contemplating the ip5. You’re deep in it on this blog.

I had an iPhone and have a TB now so I know how both aare and will see what is out and which works best for me. Idk why people flame eachother over a phone. Then again these are the same people who bitch about everything so it should be eexpected anymore.

Verizon sent me a free extended battery so my battery life is great.

          • Anonymous

I got the two pack for $29 and carry extra ones when i go out. I think I got too many widgets going on, the regular 1400mAh battery only lasts 4-5 hours for me. (I got the official HTC 2750mAh ext. battery originally, but made the phone too thick.)

at leas it’l lbe down to just two phones, now: htc vigor and nexus prime

(though, i must admit, lack of info about htc’s vigor is beginning to make my WANT for the vigor fade a little… c’mon, htc, take a page from moto’s book. their phones,a fter the OG, may suck, but at least their marketing – viral and un-viral – is excellent. start leaking some specs/ photos!!!)

  • Anonymous

I called it awhile back that they would pass on this and get the new nexus.

  • mdhenshaw

Listen idiots… why would anyone think that the Nexus Prime is coming Verizon? Based on what? Rumors? There were rumors/reports than the GS2 was coming to VZW first as of 3 weeks ago. The Prime is vaporware.

    • Anonymous

@P3Droid pretty much confirmed it through some of the code in a leaked Nexus ROM he got. Check out his old tweets. It was enough of a confirmation for me to plan on holding back on the Bionic, GSII, Vigor, and Spyder.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

Although the Prime may not come to Verizon, I think you need to look up the definition of vaporware.  The phone is real and will be released, we just don’t know which carriers will have it.

By the way, chill the f*ck out with calling people idiots.

  • radyoactive

Thank god this news broke.  I’m tired of seeing thread after thread of the SGS2 vs (insert phone name) in the Verizon threads.

This is at least a positive that we could very well see the Nexus Prime later this year, maybe October!

  • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Man this sucks but hey what you going to do…verizon hate to say it but is right too many devices…they should of not sold the charge and just released the sgs2

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Thomas-Walsh/5000529 Thomas Walsh

I sincerely hope the only reason is because they decided to go all out and bring the Nexus Prime and figured the SG2 would just steal sales from that…..PLEASE, OH PLEASE let that be the case.

  • Anonymous

    Bionic it is!

  • Anonymous

I think the real reason is that Samsung didn’t want to compromise the slim form factor for an LTE radio and Verizon realizes they need to stop putting out 3G phones.

  • Anonymous

Vigor/Prime or bust.  I imagine they declined the phone because it would upstage the Bionic which they have already sunk a ton of money into marketing-wise.

  • Anonymous

    September: Bionic – I’ll pass

Last week in October or early November: Nexus Prime – Probably my next phone.

What are the rumored dates for the HTC Vigor and the Motorola Spyder (aka Droid HD code name Dinera)?

  • Faust’s_Lament

sorry, can someone remind me, is the Vigor (theoretically) slated for September or October?

Like I always say.  Verizon doesn’t care.  As long as people stay for their network they don’t have to worry about carrying a phone the other guys have.

They have the HTC Vigor, Motorola Droid HD, LG Rev 2 and possibly the Nexus Prime. Right now those phones triumph anything leaked for other carriers and are all expected by the end of the year. So I think you have to give VZW credit, they have plenty coming.
