DROID HD May be Headed to Verizon as the Motorola “Spyder”

The mysterious DROID HD took the tech world by storm on Monday when it appeared in a variety of photos over at Engadget.  Up until that point, we had only seen the name attached to some Flickr photos and on an Asian site with photos of a follow-up Atrix – we definitely had no other details of it.

After the pics went live though, we reached out to our sources to see what we could dig up, since there were some questions as to whether or not this was the rumored Motorola Dinara.  Well first off, we have been told that this phone is not the Dinara, but is instead the Motorola Spyder (codename of course).  It is more of a brother to the Photon 4G than anything, has a “different” screen and smaller MP camera than the Dinara, and should be headed to Verizon – something we could have all guessed if the “DROID” name attached to it holds up.

As for the Dinara, we know that many people are under the impression that it is headed to AT&T, but our sources assure us that the device is at this time being tested on Verizon LTE.  Could it end up on AT&T only as one of their first LTE devices?  Most definitely.  Especially with this Spyder device looking like Verizon’s next big Moto offering.  Our sources also mentioned that the Dinara is the higher-end device of the two, but were not told exactly why.

Keep it in Rumorville for now.  Add it to the list of codenames to keep an eye out for.

Cheers ___!

The DROID name is licensed by VZW, if this is the next DROID device its most likely going to VZW. Waiting on the specs to compare it to the BIONIC and to what ever else Samsung is cooking up….to decide for the upgrade :o)

anyone notice how the camera’s flash isnt affecting the screens visibility? the photon’s screen has that dual anti glare layer that i guess motorola is starting to use & i notice it makes the blacks in the screen look as black as amoled screen *thats until you shut the lights off in a dark room* but in real world use the screen looks as good as my last samsung vibrant from t-mobile & a whole lot sharper.

My thoughts are that Moto stood to lose a ton of money on the original bionic development, so they repackeged the device, were planning on releasing it a few months earlier than the HD to recoup some of that cash, then when that phone fizzles out, They were planning to release the HD. But someone leaked the HD early. Too bad Moto, But good for us that work hard for our money.

Well look what we have here. This is the Real Bionic. Someone definately saved us from a big headache. This is definately the one to buy.

Does the blue tint of the screen where the flash is remind anybody how the SAMOLED looks when its off and even when a picture of it is snapped of one with the flash on?

  • Leec136

I was holding out for the bionic, but I finally decided to just wait till my contract is up next May.  I have the DX1 and as much as I like the latest technology, if the bionic can actually do something that my DX1 can’t do as of right now, other then speed, I am good for now.  There are too many new phones headed to VZW within the next 6 months.  I want to see something like the Droid Spyder or GS2 (slim version).  Those are some beasts.  The bionic is the beginning of the dual core 4g phones to start, so everyone is gonna be on this bandwagon in the next 6 months.  I think I am good for now.  Besides, they took to freaking long to bring it out.  I was actually ready to get it the first time.  Now I am glad they delayed it.

If the Bionic was released when it was suppose to they would have had a lot of sales, but with all of these phones coming out right after it is killing all of the Bionic hype.

    • Niteperson

In this case it’s Moto competing against itself. This is a really nice looking phone.

  • Carmen Diva

I love the name Droid Spyder. Sounds cool.

    Looks like a fun device.

    • Guest

which one do u have now ?

  • RW-1

    Fun stuff!

Another unit to get all hyped up about, until we see it crippled by blur, staying locked down, and suffering batt/performance issues on 4G.

And just to jack it up, the MAP will be $399 for them, I mean why not?  They will justify it by the number of suckers, er, buyers of the Bionic already …

For $299 I can get a cheap phone and a netbook. It’s out of control.

so att 1up’d vzw with the atrix being better than the original bionic and now they could possibly do it again by getting the higher end dinara  over the vzw photon.how lame would that be?

  • J G

Still though all in all, this phone looks pretty tight.  But yeah, its got to be on LTE or no go.

    • Guest

i dont care if the phone its a little thick as long as it has LTE and good ram nice blur i am on it the one that revolutionized android was a very thick phone OG droid and it broke iphone record for most sales within three months

  • RedOne1

So Verizon is going to release the Droid Bionic, Galaxy SII, iPhone5, Nexus Prime, HTC Vigor, and the Moto Spyder in the next 4 months of what’s left of 2011? Crazzzzyyyyyy

    • Arthur2142

I just received my VZW e-mail this morning advising me that I’m eligible for an upgrade, but I am only seriously considering the Nexus Prime or GSII at this point in time.

    • RedOne1

I also notice that every other year Verizon release good phones aat the end of the year for example; Fall 2007- LG Voyager, Fall 2008- Nothing special, Fall 2009- Motorola Droid (Android Revolution began) Fall 2010- Nothing special, and Fall 2011 Nexus on Verizon. What you guy think?

      • Guest

lol 2010 nothing special just the most popular phone in verizon droid x just check out the sales if you dont believe me and it was competing with droid incredible not like the og droid it was by itself that is why it sold a lot
        thank you

        • Anonymous

Wasn’t the X released in July? That makes it summer 2010 instead of fall. I think RedOne1 is still on to something.

    • Anonymous

verizon did mention at ces 10 4g devices by end 2011……

  • http://www.twitter.com/slinky317 slinky317

That blu-ish tint to the camera flash reflection really makes it look like an AMOLED screen, not to mention that it seems to have a VERY dark black to it.

  • OG Droid

So what your telling me is that I shouldn’t buy the bionic, or the Droid HD, but wait and get the Dinara cause its going to be better

  • TheDroidAbides

A brother to the Photon 4g?  I thought the Bionic was a brother to the Photon 4g?  Sounds to me like this will be a 3g phone, which would make sense considering how thin it is.  Basically Motorola’s version of the 3G Galaxy S II phones that have been so popular.

    • Jikhead

I too believe this will be a 3G device and not 4G.  Why would MOTO/VW release this so shortly after the Bionic?  Doesn’t make business sense, if it were to be 4G.

      • TheDroidAbides

Exactly and it doesn’t make technological sense considering how much thicker all phones with 4G LTE radios have been so far.  I don’t even know if any 3G Android phones have been as thin as this appears to be.

        • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

How would it make sense releasing a 3g phone when there moving towards LtE

          • TheDroidAbides

Maybe they think some people would rather buy an ultra thin and light 3g phone with a beautiful screen and  solid battery life than a 4G LTE tank with poor to average battery life and pentile?  For all we know Samsung’s Galaxy SII offering for Verizon may be 3G and this could be Motorola’s answer to that.

          • Guest

if we are talking about tank who phone was thicker than droid 1 lol and it sold a lot even though i feel it sold a lot because it was one and only no competition for it at that time unlike droid x it has the evo on sprint and incredible in verizon and droid 2 as well.

          • Guest

i agree but that is starting 2012 they already release a lot of 3g phones there are a lot of places that still does not have lte

      • Guest

i agree moto ceo said that they will release another 4g let and two more tablets the other lte motorolla will be the dinara this will have good specs but the bionic its so special because it has that hott combination dual core LTE the first one :)

Well, it certainly WON’T be called the Droid HD.. I mean, the screen is clearly not HD.. and honestly it doesn’t even look like qHD.

    • John

prob but people are dumb enough these days to believe it. they could name it “Droid iSpitOutFreeMoney”, and people would jump all over it

Ha! I read “ispitoutfreemonkey” instead of “ispitoutfreemoney” and thought your post was quite funny although it didn’t make a lot of sense which made it somewhat funny but then I reread it and saw that it said “ispitoutfreemoney” instead of “ispitoutfreemonkey” and now your post makes much more sense but it’s also much less funny.

This and the Prime make me go “….what’s a Bionic?”

  • Anonymous

Is it just me or is the phone terribly ugly?

  • Anonymous

At least Moto has named this appropriately in advance: Droid HD = Droid Horrendous Delays. Are we sure this isn’t really the Bionic? :P

    • Anonymous

Dude, that’s just wrong but Funny as hell. The Bionic may have been delayed but the upgrades seem to be worth it.

    • Tarsis Brito

it was delay because of the negative feedbacks of the first ones so now what are you talking about if u dont like moto phones why are you here this is a moto post moron

I do appreciate your emotional defense of a product you love without having tried at all.

I just looked at the battery icon looking for the pixelation.  I saw square, non-pentile pixels!  Then I realized: Those are my computers pixels.  I am an idiot.

Motorola needs to streamline their product lines. Why do they need a Droid X2 AND a Bionic AND this thing all on the same network?

The notification bar is black not blue like all Motorola devices running 2.3.4 so does this mean its ICS or on another manufacturer?

    • I’m Kick-Ass!

Well I’m sure the Bionic product management group isn’t overjoyed to see this leak hit the web.

  • Ian Wilson

Sometimes I wish phone manufacturers would just stop making better products for a little bit after I buy the latest  and greatest thing, just so I wouldn’t immediately be envious of the better phone that is released weeks later

    • ChrisI

I think the only solution for you is to stop reading Droid Life :). It would baffle you the kinds of technology we have the capability to put in a phone RIGHT this minute, but corporations are in business to make money. And lots of it. So they stagger their product releases to maximize shareholder returns. @pple is genius at this with their products, the Android side is no different. If they released all the best of the best right now, what would they do for the next two years until your contract is up?

      • Ian Wilson

My relationship with Droid Life is like a married man’s with pr0n. Yeah, I have my baby and can stay faithful, but sometimes I need that little extra bit to add some fresh excitement…

    • Guest

just settle to have the best device every two years that is what i  will once i get bionic or droid spyder it will have everything cam front facing lte double core etc
