Tuesday Poll: What is your favorite Android instant messaging app?

With the release of Facebook’s new cross platform messenger, we saw a lot of talk about not needing another messaging app in this arena and then started wondering which app was the most popular.  All of us have Google Talk built right into Android and use it frequently, but we know that many of you use apps that cover multiple social networks and messaging platforms for chatting (Trillian) as well as stand-alone messengers like Kik.

We tossed together a quick list of some of the more popular, but wanted you guys to let us know which was the top dog.  Everyone fall back on Gtalk or is there another app we should be checking out?  If we didn’t list your favorite, please drop it in the comments.

I like using IMO and Gtalk.  The new version was in beta for a while, should be fresh out the oven and works really well on my DX.

Google Talk. Comes with the phone, fast messaging and easy to use. I don’t have many requirements beyond that.

  • Anonymous

Are there any alternatives to the skype app? I tried Im + but it sucked.

      • Anonymous

As of now, a wide plurality of poll respondents have chosen SMS only, so why don’t you relax on ganging up on people in the comments?

  • Anonymous

    Didn’t mention Whatsapp

    • Jap

      It’s in a class by itself. ^_^

Where is Skype?! It’s like one of the most popular intent messaging apps, most of the people who I know are using it.
I mostly use Google Talk though, because it comes with Android standard and it has a desktop client.
I refuse to pay for text messages, it’s a huge ripoff.

  • Anonymous

I like to use the phone. The “instant” I speak my message is heard. :-)

I just paiid $21.87 for an iPad2-32GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $657 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://to.ly/aUia

If I use your website do you promise to send me hundreds of email offers for penis cream too? As soon as I get my checks from the U.K. lottery and from my dearly departed relative in Nigeria, I will happily go on your site and spend endless amounts of money. But, for some reason, if my checks never arrive, don’t worry, I have countless numbers of job offers to work from home where I have been assured to make up to $4,000 a day.

I have to say Kik Messenger. It’s simple, easy to use, it doesn’t lag, doesn’t slow down device(not sure about battery wise though). Only drawback is the fact that it’s running all the damn time, but still worth it.

IMO does a pretty decent job, but I’m usually texting on Google Voice.

    • Ezrabyrd

I second this. IMO is the only IM a application I use outside o. It has everything. Facebook, skype, google talk, aim, and anything else you could think of. The design feels pretty , but other than that, it’s fine.

I just use the default messaging app. I’ve never thought of switching to another app, is there a reason to?

  • http://twitter.com/DannyHerran Danny Herran

I have like 4 messaging apps installed since everybody seems to use a different one. For my closest friends and colleagues I use Google Talk because they have Gmail. For others I use WhatsApp, a couple of my old fashioned BlackBerry friends are on LiveProfile, so I have that installed too, and my geekiest friends are on Huddle. And now, with Facebook Messenger invading the market, it looks that I’d have to install that one too. [androidmodo.com]

eBuddy is my choice. Fast & Beautiful UI

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1332240301 Dan Graziano

I’ve used WhatsApp and enjoyed it for the most part but most of my friends didn’t want to use it. I am a-okay with texting for now. Plus a majority of my friends tend to be BlackBerry and i*hone users.

Personally I would love to see BBM as a cross-platform messenger.

talkbox is kinda cool for the lazies. :-)

  • Peter Bartholomul

I use Trillian the most since trillian already has 8 IM services including some of the ones listed in the poll above.Only popular IM service that trillian is missing is Skype

    • Anonymous

i tried trillian before, it was a battery murderer.
      maybe its gotten better?

      • Peter Bartholomul

it has. I’ve been logged onto trillian for a few months without logging out. and when i restart my phone it automatically logs me back in and i didnt notice any change with my battery life or speed of the phone.

  • nessa

im still using hello IM since u can change the LED color

  • TheAndroid1

The thing is, everybody I know uses Facebook from my friends to my grandparents.

There are so many people on it that it is hard to just “switch”.  I don’t see everybody leaving Facebook any time soon.

    • Anonymous

So True, even those like myself is still connected to FB because of my Teenage Daughter, some time I’m forced to become the FB Police, most of these Teen girls think of FB as their own Personal diary. But that FB Messenger App, well lets just say there are about 300 Reviews already in the Market and not one is on a Positive Note.

      • TheAndroid1

I haven’t gotten to try it out on an android device yet, only an iDevice.  I think it is great.

What’s so bad about it on Android?

        • Anonymous

Nothing as far as I can tell. Something about Android reviewers are just addicted to that one star rating. Fickle bunch.

          • TheAndroid1

It’s always funny when people think one star is the best.

Agreed.  It’s irrelevant to ask what my favorite Messaging App is because there’s so much fragmentation that I’m forced to simply use SMS as the lowest common denominator.  That’s what’s exciting about the Facebook announcement, it’s got by far the widest footprint.  That said, it’s feature set is incredibly limited compared with any of the other common apps, and the desktop/mobile and online/offline differentiation are confusing at best.  If only RIM could pull their heads out of their asses and offer a cross-platform BBM.

  • Cephas003

When is Google Talk going to get an update? Same since 2009.

    • http://twitter.com/IRONMatt14 Matt Robinson
