Newest Of The DROIDX CyanogenMod Nightlies Gets Bumped to Android 2.3.5

by: | posted 07.27.11 | News, Root

If you’ve been running CyanogenMod on your DROIDX, you’ll be happy to hear that the newest of the nightlies uploaded this afternoon, is running Android 2.3.5, and is most definitely stable. Seems like just yesterday this beast was finally semi-cracked and the developer community jumped on it. In the words of Ian Malcolm: Life is like Android, it will find a way.

Has everyone been trying out the nightlies on their devices? We’re sure that 2.3.5 will be leaking onto all the phones soon. To check your device’s nightly status, check Rom Manager (you must have the premium version to get nightlies) or at the Team Douche Mirror Network. Happy flashing.

Google Maps Updated to Version 5.8, Photo Uploads and Other Places Features Included

by: | posted 07.27.11 | Apps, News

Another Google Maps update should be waiting for you in the market; this time taking you to version 5.8 that includes a whole bunch of Places additions.  Users now have the ability to attach photos to their favorite places and also add locations that may be missing.  Google is certainly doing their best to try and make this your social check-in service of choice.  I’d say they are doing a pretty nice job of it – now to try and convince all of our friends to ditch Foursquare for this.  See that happening any time soon?

Angry Birds Gets An Update In The Market, Including 15 New Levels

by: | posted 07.27.11 | Apps, News

Can’t get enough Angry Birds? Today, Rovio just pumped out an update on the Android Market for the original Angry Birds app. Nothing too crazy, but you get 15 new Mine and Dine levels. That should tie you over for a bit. Is it a problem that whenever I think about the Mine and Dine levels it makes me want to play Minecraft? Everyone here still down with word being that of the bird? Have fun!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G LTE Arriving in Stores for Tomorrow’s Launch

by: | posted 07.27.11 | News

We’re getting close, peeps.  Units have starting arriving in stores for the big launch.  As many of you know, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will go one sale in Verizon stores tomorrow as the world’s first 4G LTE tablet, a title the Motorola XOOM should have carried, but couldn’t deliver on.

Along with it’s super fast connectivity comes with what display experts are calling the best display of all tablets – including those made by Apple.  It also packs a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, Android 3.1 (upgradeable to 3.2 with TouchWizUX in early August), dual cameras, and the weight of a feather.  OK, that last part was an exaggeration, but this puppy is certainly thinner and lighter than almost any tablet on the planet.

Oracle Deletes Evidence Pointing To Sun’s Approval Of Java Use In Android

by: | posted 07.27.11 | News

If anyone has been following the case against Google made by Oracle about an alleged infringement on Oracle’s Java software, then you may be pleased to hear that Google might have gotten a good piece of evidence to help fight the money hungry Oracle. A couple years ago, Sun was bought by Oracle, and Sun were the holders of Java. A blog post made by Sun’s CEO shows that he was just fine with Google’s use of Java on their OS. Even going as far to state that all of Sun’s development resources should be based around the platform.

Galaxy S II on Verizon Dubbed Fascinate II?

by: | posted 07.27.11 | News, Rumors

Verizon’s support account is on a roll today.  First we had confirmation (that has sort of been retracted) that the Galaxy S II will be a 4G LTE device and may now have the name for it as well.  How does Fascinate II, sound?  Rumors of it being called the Function have been floating around for a couple of months thanks to some random accessory site, but Fascinate II just makes so much more sense.  The DROID brand all follows some sort of numerical naming convention, so why not the Galaxy S line?

And I’m pointing this out for the simple fact that the initial question was, “When is the Galaxy SII coming out?” with no mention of Fascinate.  The VZW support rep is the one that included the name.

Thoughts?

Asus Transformer Receiving Android 3.2 Update Tomorrow, July 28

by: | posted 07.27.11 | News

Asus Transformer owners,  Android 3.2 is upon us!  Well, tomorrow it is.

The update (according to Asus Twitter), will be available tomorrow, bringing the hottest Android tablet on the planet up to the most current version that includes a new zooming feature for apps that haven’t been built for tablets and SD card support.  Nothing huge, but definitely needed.

The full list of 3.2 highlights is as follows:

  • Optimizations for a wider range of tabletsAndroid 3.2 includes a variety of optimizations across the system to ensure a great user experience on a wider range of tablet devices.
  • Compatibility zoom for fixed-sized appsAndroid 3.2 introduces a new compatibility zoom mode that gives users a new way to view fixed-sized apps on larger devices. The new mode provides a pixel-scaled alternative to the standard UI stretching for apps that are not designed to run on larger screen sizes, such as on tablets. The new mode is accessible to users from a menu icon in the system bar, for apps that need compatibility support.
  • Media sync from SD cardOn devices that support an SD card, users can now load media files directly from the SD card to apps that use them. A system facility makes the files accessible to apps from the system media store.

Transformer owners, be sure to let us know when you receive it.

Cheers @chrisarm24!
