Verizon Swapping Out Faulty Fascinates for DROIDX2, Incredible 2 and DROID Charge? (Updated)

by: | posted 07.28.11 | News, Rumors

Update:  Our friends at Verizon have reached out to tell us that this is no longer happening.  Since the ED05 update is going out and will fix the issue, there is no need for a swap.

If your Samsung Fascinate is suffering from an inability to accept calls after receiving its latest update, then you may be entitled to a certified like-new replacement from Verizon.  According to reports, Big Red is willing to hand over a DROIDX2, Incredible 2 or DROID Charge if they deem your phone to be worthless.  So, to the Fascinate owners in the building that have been more than frustrated with their devices after receiving ED04 because it broke one its primary functions, head on into a store.

Thursday Poll: What future spec are you most looking forward to in phones?

by: | posted 07.28.11 | Polls

Today we are going hypothetical on you.  The future of phone technology is changing so swiftly that most of us can’t even keep up.  By the time the first dual-core phone was released this year, we were already talking about quad-cores.  The term “qHD” became the it word of the year back at CES, but could potentially be passed up in the same year by full HD.  We’ve seen concepts of flexible screens, operating systems that may have on-screen buttons rather than physical, and some of the thinnest designs ever.  If I had mentioned all of this stuff in 2010, most people would have laughed, but now, these new technologies are almost upon us.

As usual though, we like to make you decide which of these would be the most important to you should a phone pop up with many of the things I just listed, in tow.  Do you need more power?  A bigger screen?  Longer battery life?  The thinnest phone on the planet?  Or more RAM to handle your usage?

What future spec are you most looking forward to?

White Samsung Galaxy S II Headed to Europe, Anyone Interested in One?

by: | posted 07.28.11 | News

Ahhh yes, the wonderful world of choices.  If an all-white Samsung Galaxy S II was sitting next to the original black version, which would you choose?  Euro Android enthusiasts will soon run into this predicament, as Samsung prepares to release the latest version of the hottest selling device of the year.  It’ll come packed with everything you’d expect it to – 1.2GHz Orion processor, 1GB RAM, dual cameras, Gingerbread, and of course, that beautiful 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus screen.

No telling if this will ever make it stateside, but I would bet that it’ll make it to Canada to then be imported by someone like Expansys.

Update:  Here is another shot, including the back:

What do you guys think?

Verizon Support: DROIDX2 Gingerbread Update Starts Rolling Out Today

by: | posted 07.28.11 | News

According to Verizon support and contrary to reports yesterday, the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update for the DROIDX2 should start rolling out today in batches and will continue on until everyone has it.  We just checked ours and it’s not there yet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be checking like mad.  The update, at least in pictures, appears to include the brand new version of Blur that can be seen on the DROID3 and Bionic, along with a whole batch of bug fixes.

We’ve been told that the soak test for Motorola’s private group has begun today, so it wouldn’t surprise us if the mass rollout did not start until Friday.  You can view the entire changelog for this update here.

To check to see if the update is available to you, do the following:

Menu>Settings>About phone>System updates

*Note – If you are rooted and a DX2 owner, accepting this update might not be the best idea if you plan on being rooted ever again.  So far, 2.3 on the DX and D3 have not been rooted. (Cheers for the reminder Lonnie!)

AT&T and Motorola Prepping a Sequel to the Atrix with a 720p HD Screen?

by: | posted 07.27.11 | News, Rumors

Remember just a few weeks ago when a photo was found on Flickr to have been taken with a Motorola DROID HD?  That phone may have just surfaced overseas in a massive gallery as ME865, but sporting an AT&T logo and looking a heck of a lot like the Atrix.  The blog that posted these or at least is analyzing them, claims that this device is the DROID HD (except that we know DROID is exclusive to Verizon) and will sport a 720p HD screen (720×1280 resolution).  Yowzaz.  The screen certainly looks massive and almost has a bubble look to it, but there really is no way to tell if it’s 720p or not.

So what else do we have?  For one, no more fingerprint scanner.  (Was anyone actually using that thing anyway?)  The device will also have a pumped up 8MP camera that shoots 1080p (just like the Bionic and DROID3), HDMI-out, and the newest version of Blur (just don’t call it that).

The big news here though, is clearly that screen.  Could this really be one of the first HD screens on a smartphone?  We saw a benchmark earlier suggesting that HTC has one in the works called Vigor, so maybe this is about to become the norm?  And what about Verizon customers who are about to buy the Bionic?  Should we expect another variant to head to Big Red in 2011?  Lot’s of questions.  You guys give me the answers.

Update:  We see that a number of you noticed that there is a weird watermark of some sort that says “Sony Ericsson” and are assuming that they are fake.  While we won’t ever 100% know, we’re pretty sure it is a watermark for the original forum that they came from.  The watermark moves in each photo.  The images more than likely originated at this forum which is a Sony Ericsson forum, hence the reason for that logo on there.

Verizon Doesn’t Have MicroSIM Cards Yet, Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G LTE Launch Will Be Tricky

by: | posted 07.27.11 | News

Update:  We’re hearing that some stores have them, some don’t.  Be sure to call ahead of time before heading into a store.

Verizon stores have not received their microSIM 4G LTE cards yet in many locations which could make the launch of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G LTE a little awkward tomorrow.  Customers who planned on picking one up in the morning should be aware of a few things.  First, wait until after 10AM to cruise into a store because they may have received their shipment by then.  If they haven’t, they will allow you to order one via d-fill which means they’ll order you a Tab and microSIM and have it shipped to your house.  For month-to-month data plan customers, it looks like they will still sell you the device, but will have to order a microSIM card that will arrive within a couple of days.

Just thought we’d share…
