DROID Bionic Poses for New Photo, More Than Likely Headed for “Early September” Launch

Please ignore all references made to a release of the DROID Bionic on August 4 over the last day or three.  If it shows up miraculously next Thursday, then by all means that’s awesome – we just won’t be putting our money on it or talking about that day unless Verizon announces it.  We had been hearing 9/1 from a variety of sources over the last two weeks and should have stuck with that date.  According to a report received today along with this photo, Motorola reps are telling VZW folks that they should expect the device in “early September.”

And on a related note, our homie mentioned that the device definitely has the same screen as the DROIDX2 and DROID3, but for whatever reason there was far less ghosting.  He also said that the device was way lighter and more responsive than expected.  We’re guessing that has to do with the extra RAM and that sleek new design?  Yeah, I’m drooling a little bit too.

Apologies for the flip-flopping on dates…both 8/4 and 9/1 are flying at us from all sorts of angles.  But I’d say you can probably put those benjamins back in your pockets for at least a few more weeks.

Cheers Spaniard!

  • the interface is looking awesome & clean.. my Galaxy ACE interface is damn ugly!

I thought Bionic meant it was going to be fast, waiting 8 months for a mythical super phone that we can not even get valid specifications on is ridiculous!

  • ShockaZulu

Do you guys have ANY idea of what you’re talking about?  You don’t know why the screen would appear to have less ghosting? Do you know anyting about the GSII?   And I don’t know why anyone would take you seriously when you’re getting your information from “your homies.”  What back-alley crackhouse did you find said “homies?”  My homie, i.e. my Indirect Account Manager, said we could expect it next week.

  • The more I thought about the more likely I am to still get the Droid Bionic. The GS2 to closely resembles an i-Phone. If I wanted an i-Phone, I’d buy one. Plus the GS2 might be a little to slim and light for my liking. No idea though. Seeing how no one knows anything about either phone at this point it doesn’t matter.

  • Joey301

I will get the Samsung if it comes out first.

  • Nothing

Sept 22nd – Sorry but that is release date. Even then be warned the battery is a oven and this device is buggy as hell.

  • Andrew800m

Motorola mobility has a business office 5 minutes from my house. Maybe I should stop by and get an official release date

  • Considering that August & July are gonna be heavy spending months for me, this isn’t such bad news. It’s nice to spread the expenses out …

  • Pnicuh

whatever it will comes out i’ll wait for it.

  • Dknuckles

Thanks for deleting my comment just shows how right I am! See you next Thursday Bionic!!!

  • Djstar2k2

i have run out of things to say about vanilla android and keyboards.  so ill let my contracts run out and see has what.  i hope uncle googs at least dont drop anything on tmo i dont think anybody wants to be caught in that mess

  • RobS

Do we know if the SD card is going to be blocked by the battery like the Droids?

  • For all the rumors that the Motorola Droid Bionic will be released on Aug. 4th or even Sept. 1st, I really don’t believe them. Why? Because what came before the HTC Thunderbolt being released? TV Ads! Have we seen any for the Bionic yet? NO! If Verizon ran ads for the Thunderbolt, then you KNOW Verizon would run ads for the Bionic first. So since there hasn’t been a single Ad for the Bionic, I would guess that we won’t see it released anytime soon.

    • Pennywise

I understand what you’re saying, but Verizon did not run adds for the Thunderbolt; they ran adds for their new lightning fast 4G LTE data network.  To the only option (the Thunderbolt) went the spoils.

      • I have to disagree.  Remember those commercials of lighting hitting the tree and the guy pulls out the Thunderbolt?  That was PRE-release.

        • Pennywise

Sure, but Verizon didn’t pay superbowl advertising dollars to ‘sell the Thunderbolt,’ they were selling ‘the year of their 4G LTE network’

In order for that network unveiling to work/have context, it had to have a phone.

          • Agreed, but I also remember seeing advertisements for the Samsung Charge before it was released as well.  I just expect that we’d see Verizon ads before seeing the phone.  Though I’ve heard rumors that Verizon will start airing ads Aug. 1st.  I hope so as this will mean the Bionic isn’t far behind.

  • Timmyk465

well it looks like i won’t be getting this… after using the DX2 i absolutely hate the screen… yes its bright, and easy to see outside… and yes it looks fine if i hold the phone at arms length… but for normal use, it just looks like im playing an old NES game…

  • I was in a Verizon store a few hours ago, when their rep came into the store and told them all to expect the Bionic in 30 days or less. Seems like that September 1st date could be very close if not on the money. We can hope for the “or less” part though. I only wish this phone was global; it would be completely perfect.

  • I was in a local Verizon store here in Houston, Texas and one of their reps walked in and told them all to expect this in 30 days or less.

  • I will buy the sure thing Samsung Galaxy S2 when it goes on sale. I am sick of the Bionic hype!

  • So we are talking 27 days between the two release dates.  Not a big deal.  Especially since we don’t know when the SGSII will come out on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.  If the two phones release around the same time, that would be awesome.  Then I could look at both phones and make an informed decision on which phone to get.  I’m not under 30 so I do have patience…  just sayin…

Man, I really want this phone….and I really want it to come out in August.  And I don’t know you about you guys, but I consider September to be the Fall, not Summer.  =(

I’ve decided that i’m buying a droid phone August 4th regardless. If the Bionic shows up that day i’ll buy that no questions asked but if not then i’ll Droid 3. It might not have 4G but it’s still pretty fast and has a lot of the other things that the Bionic, just kind of dumbed down speed wise and it has a physical keyboard and global if i need it so i’m alright with that.

  • Space Cadet
  • Dknuckles

That’s a bunch of bull in my opinion! There’s no date shown on the phone to give that any credibilty also the new chrome ring around the edges as shown in the Amazon leaked photos. Not sure why ALL your sources have different answers??? Ya ever think its a ploy that they know you guys can have the power to completely stir up the whole android community? Almost every post on the internet about the droid Bi-Polar for the last three hours has mirrored exactly what you released about what your so called sources have told you and same with yesterday and the day before lol. Its like high school tell one and they will all know! Lol ill just wait to see what verizon and motorola decide for their most highly antisipated smart phone in history. Sorry don’t mean to bash just my two ¢ on this rumor rollercoaster…

  • CaptainMobile

As a sales professional all a customer has to decifer between similar products is the way a company handles itself.  I work with Motorola in their ADM division and I can say they take their dominance for granted.  If the S2 is within a month and has a 1.2, NFC and the best screen versus the worst and months of tried and true testing overseas?
I won’t buy your bionic after months of delays.  They delayed because they could, not because they had to, at least Samsung doesnt play in the shadows and have fanboys like mdb208 trying to “force motorolas hand” by making up a fake release date.  Long live s2!

  • GigmanX

Does it bother anyone that the home screens have been decreased from seven on the DX back to five with the new Blur on the Droid 3 and now the Bionic?

  • Babadush

am I the only one who has realized this is not the droid bionic? it’s a droid 3. look at all the accessory pictures that came out. it’s an entirely different phone. I think people have been posting the droid 3 the entire time and think it’s a droid bionic.

    • Anonymous

It’s the bionic, the front camera is in a different position than the D3.

  • AK

My buddy at Verizon Wireless in VA told me that it will going on sale Tuesday August 2nd. He is family so I believe him.

  • Billsfire1

That’s not the Bionic. It is a slide phone, probably the D3. Just look at the bottom of the phone.

  • Dominick7777

Uh weren’t they saying the Bionic was coming this SUMMER? Since when is September SUMMER? This blows.. Been waiting for this freaking phone just like I wanted for the disappointing Thunderbolt. That will be what 8 to 9 months since it was announced?? By the time this is out I can imagine other phones or tablets would be announced.. I’m now going to be looking at other phones as well..

  •  Meh, I don’t like Moto devices. HTC and Sammy all the way. I’m hoping for a SGS2. But is it me, or is that thing a Photon?

  • TheAndroid1

That really looks like an AMOLED display, even though it is supposed to be the same.

  • Ted

This picture looks just like my old Droid 2 Global at first glance.

  • Stelv81

Things Motorola is known for…bad cameras, laggy buggy software, encrypted bootloaders, ugly design, and now add bad screens to the mix. They are still better than Samsung IMO though.

    • Anonymous

You need to read some reviews.  The SGS2 is on fire around the globe.  Great pics/video/screen/performance/software.  All this from a phone that has been out there in customers hands for almost 3 months.  Compare one side by side with a Bionic when they are both out in the US and see which one wins on just the display alone.

I’m tired of bad cameras, laggy buggy software and bad screens.  There’s no excuse for it with today’s technology.

  • Anonymous

The pentile screen is going to have to prove itself to me to be better. i picked up a Droid 3 and could really notice the pentile when I opened some programs. I’m not sure if it is something I want to get used to.

I would be all over it if it really substantially increased battery life but it seems it doesn’t.

  • Based on what you’ve written and what I see there, I’m going to say it looks like it possibly won’t be pentile, and that FFC looks like it can focus and isn’t a static sensor.

  • Anonymous

A verizon representative called me last night to offer me a Droid 3 with a 2 year activation discount… As far as I knew my upgrade wasn’t untill June 2012. I was surprised but i followed up with: “I’m actually more interested in the Droid Bionic, When does that come out?” He responded with “Sir that phone is not due for retail for another 5 weeks…” I gave him many thanks, told him I would order it when it came out and hung up… I can rest better now knowing that piece of information…

  • saul ruiz

just gonna wait for new nexus phone with ics now and get top of the line specs…whats another month or two of waiting lol

  • Anonymous

If the Bionic comes out at the same time as the SGSII, sales are definitely going to take a hit.

  • david

    I guess we riot

  • Joesred

    I was just thinking….
you know that online sign-up to get more info on the Droid Bionic …

Anyone else think it was just Verizon’s way of trying to see if there was still interest in the unit?

  • Kfath1978

I am seriously done w/ this….  I am going to ride out my contract w/ VZW (december) and head somewhere else.

  • Justin

how much is verizon gonna rape me for this beast even though my 2 year is up? i know the new every 2 is dead, but a 30 bone credit is a joke. i spend nearly $100 a month for my service!

  • daniel walsh

    MOTO BLEW IT

  • OG Droid

Why can’t anyone take a picture of the F’ing phone from the side? Is it so much to ask to see if its slim or not?

  • JCastle482

I had an OG and was holding out for a dual core 4G LTE phone, and had hoped taht the bionic was going to be it. A few weeks back I was given a DINC, so naturally I rooted it and installed Cyanogen and this thing is smooth, my only complaint is the bad battery life and thats with an extended battery (1750mAh)! But from what I have seen as far as the size, rumored specs, and countless delays I think I’ll hold off until the holidays. Way to go Motorola and Verizon, you have once again shot yourself in the foot. Hey Verizon be smart and get the next Nexus Phone out of the gate!!!!!

  • Rayzkain

Just read the the Sprint version of SGSII (Within) passed through FCC with Wimax 4g radio. Sooooooooooo, does that mean that Verizon’s will be. Guess Moto just screwed them selfs. So what would be better Sprint 4g Sammie or Verizon 3g Sammie, and who will jump.

  • Anonymous

looks like i’m getting the SGS2 you had a long run droid bionic but september is just too far away

  • Dean2359

Wow Moto,HUGE mistake. You had your chance to possibly grab all of us who have been waiting for you or the Samsung S2 cause we want something amazing but you screwed the pooch my friend. In my opinion you have dragged this to the point where most people are just fed up with you and your delays. We can only take so much and this endless teasing has just plain worn us out. Speaking for myself,I’ll be purchasing the Sammie, with or without LTE,nice if it had it but I leave it off on my T Bolt anyway cause it’s such a  battery hog.I’ve been a moto fan way back to my first phone, the Star Tac,which I cant part with btw,but now I’m tired of waiting. As the saying goes: Timing is Everything”

  • Ha! I can’t get over that first line! “Please ignore all the references…”
I wish it were that easy…

  • What I don’t seem to understand is why not at least give us a definitive specs sheet, so we can at least compare and contrast with phones such as Samsung Galaxy S II  (aka:  Function).  I really don’t understand what the secret is?  It is what it is, and whatever hardware specs it has it has.  If the specs are not equal or better than Samsung’s Galaxy S 2’s then state so either way, so people can move on.  After the longest wait ever for a phone all the way from the beginning of the year, it would be a shame that Motorola in their infinite wisdom wouldn’t have at least made an attempt to be on equal footing with the Samsung Galaxy S II.  i.e.  At least a dual core with each core pumping out 1.2GHz and 1GB or RAM.  After all this wait, if Motorola doesn’t produce these specs that the Galaxy S II has had internationally for the last 3 months, then it’s goodnight to Motorola.  They cannot even dream of competing, if the Bionic took them over 7 months to allegedly perfect and make competitive and their specs don’t even mirror a phone that has been out for 3 months already, then shame on Motorola.  ~  By the way I’m not anti – Moto.  I am a proud owner of an OG Droid.  I’m just tired of the games!!! We do live in the “information age.” Lets get on the ball Moto!!!

  • With all these delays it just makes me wonder if this phone will still be buggy at release time…If the SGII comes out before the Bionic, the Bionic sales will suffer. And I will have a decision to make.

  • Jj69chev

guess i might as well wait for the Prime now

    • daniel walsh

i was always getting the prime

      • Wish I really believed that VZW was getting Prime.  Wish I really thought Prime was coming out this year. These things never come out when they say.  Waiting for the next best phone always ends up with you hearing about an even better phone before the one your waiting on is out.  I don’t think my OG will hold up much longer.

        • Well the Nexus phones have always been released at the end of the year, so it really doesn’t seem far fetched to think we will see it this year.  However, I can’t see Verizon getting the Nexus Prime, or at the very least, I certainly don’t see them being the first to get it.  I’m going to switch to whichever carrier gets it first.

  • Pcsolve88

I can upgrade tomorrow and have been wanting to get the Bionic but will get the Droid3 instead. My wife will get my DROIDX because she hates her Fascinate. I have to agree. Samsung’s graphics are too cartoon looking and no notification light drive for a couple reasons.

    • daniel walsh

      get the sgs2

    • Me too. I feel pot committed at this point. I just can’t fold!

  • i think its time i switch to the sgs2, if it turns out the bionic is awesome I’ll just sell it and switch

  • L Latus

Well that lip completely ruined the phone so it doesn’t matter when the release date is anymore.

    SGS2 it is.

  • Joesred

hey wait a min…I think I call BS on this pic….
All this time…Technology development….hype…or lack there of depending on how you look at it…and the wallpaper on this cutting edge phone is

    Live Wallpapers   ….   WATER?

  • OG Droid

Cheers to Moto!! You just signed away your fate. SGS2 and i*hone, will ended up crushing this because of your stupid delays. I wanted this phone but to much BS now. Hey Sanja(or whatever his name is) have fun working in a call center in a few months when Moto goes under.

Was the picture of the Bionic taken by the DX2?

    • Nkmett15

      Definitely NOT a DX2…my X2 takes great pictures….most likely a D3….

      • digsoreos

You’re lucky. My DX2 takes horrible pictures. Even in sunlight, outside, the pictures turn out grainy and washed out. Now, my old DX took great pictures. I guess Motorola changed to a lower quality camera for the DX. Perhaps there really was some benefit to the mechanical shutter after all?

  • Joos519

F’ those Motorolla Cack Sackas!!!!  I can’t take looking at my cracked screen OG for another month.  Thunderbolt is the next best option for me.  To the Verizon store and away!!!!!

  • Mayze23

Meh the hype is over. Moto dropped the ball on this one. If the Galaxy S2 is 4g LTE moto will go the way of blackberry

Bionic? What is that? Oh, its what the SGS2 whipes its 4$$ with. Got it…. cynic, I know 🙂

  • Aj

with the release date getting pushed back and pushed back, its just a sign this phone is just not as cool as its being hyped to be.

  • Joesred

    OK….
Motorola announced their upcoming BABY on Jan. 6, 2011.
Let’s say they were 2 weeks late for their ahem…monthly.
So assuming the first day of their last period was Dec. 23, 2010….add seven days…Making it Dec 30…then go back 3 months  Making the Due Date
    September 30, 2011.

In this time frame a human being could be created and delivered into the world.

Why do I get the feeling this is just a hysterical Motorola Pregnancy and they are just going to steal someone’s baby and call it their own.

My son has been telling me the Samsung GII is the way to go.
I will hate to tell him he is right.  (shaking head)

    • I love how you put that.  The fact that a human can be conceived, created, and born quicker then a phone can be released it hilarious.  +1 to you good sir.

    • Are you comparing Motorola to God? BLASHPEMY!

  • John

Pentile screen and that ugly plastic bit for the radio on the bottom = no thanks.

  • Anonymous

Is it just me or does that pic look just like a Droid 2?

  • JD

This is pushing it. My last “New Every Two” runs out mid september. Upon asking for an extension Verizon said, “Use it or lose it.”

    • impact

When did your new every two originally come up?  I have been holding on to mine but didn’t know they would expire.  That would really make me mad.

      • JD

They have a six month window. Mine upgrade was available on March 10th so I have until September 10th.

        • When I talked to my VZW rep they said upgrades don’t expire. Is an upgrade different than a new every two?

          • JD

Upgrades allow you to access the lower price and they don’t expire because you are (or are almost) out of contract. New Every Two discounts are extra and they do expire 6 months after your upgrade date.

  • Chaz2400

  • yeah I think I am done with this phone now

Just showing you people that you are just as big as sheep as the iPhone users that you claim to hate.  If it’s ok to cite “my homie”, then I guess Androids are being returned at 30-40% rates, right?  I mean, it’s all “confidential sources” that techcrunch was trying to “protect” right?

I guess what really upsets me the most is we’ve all been waiting for this phone, rumored to be some ultra-uber, what was the word used, *beast* and it is turning out to be yesterday’s technology.  Minus LTE, there is nothing rumored about this phone that doesn’t already exist today!!!!  I guess that is the biggest disappointment  I’m seeing.  It would have made a splash in May when all that was out there was single core phones and only one with LTE, but now?  This thing is already going to be behind the curve before its released because they delayed it so long.

Smart phone technology moves pretty fast.  If you don’t stop and release your super phone, you could miss it.

At this point the Bionic has lost all interest for me. Smaller Screen then I wanted. Locked Bootloader. Same Pentile BS… even if they fixed the DX2 problems its still not a great screen as compared to the superphone being produced by other companies. Plus as someone who owns a OG Droid and XOOM I’m incredibly disappointed in Moto’s lack of support and updates to both products. As much as I have always been a Moto-fan from the day I bought my first phone all the way up to the Xoom I think I’m finally saying goodbye to Moto… Samsung/HTC here I come.

  • I don’t understand the need for the lip at the bottom….kind of takes away from the sleekness. The pictures on amazon with the phone in the cradle didn’t seem to have the lip…

    • Spider210

      ditto

    • Dave

Verizon is compelled to plaster their name all over the device, a lip provides them that real estate!

I am still using my D1 AND I am not liking any of the phones currently for Verizon – hopefully the Bionic will change my mind!

  • ODAWG

I thought I was going to regret buying the Charge once the Bionic came out, but I’m pretty sure that’s not going to happen.  If this truly is the Bionic, it’s an ugly phone and the new Blur looks gay.

    • Anonymous

I’m still struggling trying to even read the small fonts on my DX2. The new Moto screens are so pixelated it affects usability. I was hoping for something better after waiting so long for the Bionic. I guess I’ll keep waiting for the SG2 to come out.

    • Anonymous

      1. The new Blur isn’t called Blur anymore.
      2. It’s actually loads better – Go look at the Droid 3.
      3. The Bionic will be much better than the Charge, screens aside.
      4. Motorola’s build quality and designs are amazing.
      5. What are you 12? Saying gay to insult something?

      • Anonymous

        1. Name is irrelevant, Blur is still buggy and slow
        2. Its better because its better?
        3. Of course, its better because its better.
        4. Very subjective. Some think Droids are ugly, heavy bricks
        5. Yes, I’m pretty sure “gay” is being used as an insult. Glad you figured it out.

        • You do realize saying something is “gay” is a huge insult right? Grow up. It’s 2011, Michele Bachmann.

          2.  Seriously, Google for Droid 3 and watch some videos.
          3.  Two words: Dual core.
          4.  Your right, it is,  But Samsung most certainly makes plastic phones.
          5.  What the other guy said.

      • Anonymous

        1. Name is irrelevant.  If you put lipstick on a pig, its still a pig
        2. It looks better, definitely agree, but go read the reviews on lag on the D3
        3. We really don’t even have definitive specs, how can you be sure?  It is *rumored* to be better spec-wise, but can you *prove* it?
        4. Here’s that build quality again.  Look at any OG Droid forum and see how badly these are failing for people that are still on contract with them!  Build quality?  Horse manure!!!!!!!!  And I’ll tell you what, the SGS2 is a lot more sexy than the Bugonic!
        5. Can’t argue too much on this one other than different people express themselves in different ways.  Its what makes the world go around.

I have been waiting for this phone forever.  My blackberry is torturous.  Motorola has really screwed themselves if they launch this in September against the SGII and iPhone 5.  I really wanted this phone but if it is pushed to September and the SGII comes out before or around the same time I might get that instead because it is going to be an awesome phone and I just want to spite Moto

  • Anonymous

    freakin shock

  • brandon brower

And when september comes they will say it will be delayed til october if the sgsII comes out before it i will be getting that ive waited for this phone for months to come out and i am tired of the bs game they are playing

    • Anonymous

Verizon/Motorola is acting like a female playing games with all the guys that knows want her.

      • Anonymous

Except when you look up close and see a turd.

  • It’s being unclassified by the FCC on August 7th. Why would they wait a month after that to release the Bionic?? And why would they run it into the iPhone 5 launch? Come on Kellex, you’re smart enough to know VZW HATES launching 2 big things at once.

    • Custom Colonel

Kellex is not that smart.  He just posts crap to get hits.  His “homie” is playing him.

    • impact

Ya this doesn’t really make much sense.  Are phones usually released before they are unclassified by the FCC?

    • Dave

One thing’s for certain, we’ll see what the Bionic is all about on August 7th if it doesn’t release before then…and Motorola doesn’t request an extension from the FCC.

  • T Hall

Is that picture from @MDB228? 😉

  • Spider210

so why does verizon employees have vacation black-out from aug 10 to aug 31 ^_^

    • Custom Colonel

LOL, you can’t seriously believe it’s because an Android phone is coming out, can you?

  • StillOGing

Just release the dam phone already! I might wait for the Samsung Galaxy S II just to spite Motorola for being so irritating about this release.

  • geedee82

Remember that kid who called kellex a hypebeast and then everyone started using the phrase?  I wonder if he knows what its become on here now?

  • Anonymous

This looks like an enlarged picture of my OG Droid only running blur instead of 2.3.4… I really may have to go Galaxy LTE.

  • Pilotbluemike

why does it constantly look like like the Bionic has a slide out keyboard?

    • jimbob

      Because you need new glasses.

      • Pilotbluemike

probably right, but whats with the lip at the bottom?

  • Mctypething

I really don’t understand the secrecy surrounding this phone’s specs and release dates. There are tons of Verizon customers out there who bought the OG Droid and have upgrades available or coming that are probably very interested in this phone. Shouldn’t they be given clear information on the phone’s details and release date so they can make an informed purchase. Also, I’m not a marketing major, but I don’t think complete silence from the manufacturer, shady blurred out pictures, and imprecise details on specs are a good way to sell your phone. It almost seems like Motorola and Verizon are purposefully setting this phone up to fail.

    • Anonymous

I would imagine they are hoping all those people who don’t read blogs will buy a phone now and not later.  Many companies don’t like announcing products they can’t sell to you.  I would imagine Verizon is a lot more focused on sales of all their products than maximizing the sales of a particular device on it’s release day.

    • Custom Colonel

No one knows about this phone except people on sites like this.  You really think the majority of D1 owners have any clue what a Bionic is?  Please.

      • Mctypething

Actually, they probably do. Do you think people looking to spend $200+ on a phone just meander into a Verizon store and pick out a phone that looks cool? It’s called doing research on a major purchase, something tons of people do now that there is this thing called the internet. You’re an idiot.

        • Custom Colonel

You’re saying that most customers research what they buy??  Seriously?  Wow, I think every company in the world would be out of business if customers were actually researching what they buy.  I bet you bought $300 HDMI cables after all your “research” too, right?

          • Mctypething

No, actually the opposite. Once I did research on HDMI cables, I learned you don’t need to get the really high-priced cables for a good connection. And yes, I believe most people do research on major purchases. And if you’re just going to blindly post negative comments to every single thing on this post, then you lose credibility pretty fast.

          • Custom Colonel

That’s my point.  There wouldn’t be a market for $300 HDMI cables, if people were doing research.  The fact is people are NOT doing research.  I’m not sure why you think that the millions of android owners are all researching their next phone purchase, and not just going into the Verizon store and being sold by the salesmen.

If consumers did research before every purchase, many companies would be out of business.

          • I dont understand what you are fighting for?? For people that dont do research who cares….What does it matter to you or anyone….pointless conversation

          • Oddnumber003

I am a verizonwireless rep. No most do not research. And yes they drop 200 sometimes 300 on a phone they know nothing about. I just do my best to educate them on what device to get based on needs. Only 1 out of 10 actually come in and know what’s up. And I can tell right from the start. And I always recommend them to this site for droid info.

          • they do research maybe not price or specs but they ask their friends or family about what phone they have like etc….Plenty of people have a general idea of what they want be it android or Iphone or blackberry….The reason they want each one is because so and so has this phone and they love it…So to say people just walk in without even having a thought about it is wrong

          • Anonymous

And how many of us right here get asked about what their recommendation is for a phone??  I’ll tell you what.  The Bionic which was once my “wait for” recommendation is off my list.  While I might take a chance on it *if* it releases in 2011, I can’t, knowing full well of all these delays for issues, recommend it to someone looking for a powerful and reliable smart phone.  I would be recommending the proven SGS2.  To me a reliable phone is still worth more than LTE.

        • No, most do not, from experience. Many times i’ve walked into a VZW store and watched people without a clue start looking at smartphones, then watched the salesmen pitch what they think is best. Personally, I know of many people that walked into a VZW store and bought what the sales guy told them to. From working in sales in college, I can tell you that almost no one actually reads before dropping hundreds on electronics.

          • Custom Colonel

glen, Kleendroid, and jjjj, I’m glad to see there are some people who actually know what happens and not just patting themselves on the back for owning an Android phone.

Owning an android phone doesn’t make you a genius, any more then owning an iPhone does.  Most consumers are clueless sheep.

          • Mctypething

We disagree on this point, and that’s fine. Neither of us have any concrete data to back up our point, so there’s no use going back and forth. My point is that I believe the majority of people who would buy a $300 smartphone do at least some research before-hand, and you seem to believe that is not true.

          • Anonymous

It would make sense for you to be correct… 🙂 But just go into a Verizon store one day and hang around and find out if you are… 🙂  I think you will be disappointed in how easily people spend their money based on the shape and design of a phone and salesperson opinion.

          • There isn’t evidence in the form of a poll of consumers who bought smartphones… but there is tesimony from a VZW rep in this thread. And you could go to a Verizon store and hangout and listen to the people buying phones. Anytime I go to a VZW store all I see and hear are uninformed sheep. I also don’t think that asking people you know about which phone you should buy constitutes “research”

        • Anonymous

Sadly yes that is exactly what many do. Go stand in a Verizon store for a while and listen to everyone buying phones. Most don’t seem to have a clue. They go in either wanting an iPhone or “one of those new Droid phones”. They will start comparing what they look like and thumb through a screen or two.

Then if they have not decided what they want the salesperson comes over and decides for them. What I mean by that is that whichever phone the salesperson says something positive about… They buy.

People are sheep… And you would be surprised how powerful the line “our most popular phone is…”.

Of course there are informed customers out there. But most are not.

          Try it… Go listen.

          • Anonymous

            dont forget the worthless Blackberry!

          • Johnfranckiv

I work selling Verizon phones… and 90% of the people coming in have never heard of the bionic…

          • Pnicuh

I still have the worthless Blackberry -_- so sad…

          • I used to be a tech for Verizon, and what you said is exactly what happens.  Once in a while someone will come in who thinks they know what they are talking about, and about 1/2 the time they actually do.  Everyone else buys based on marketing campaigns, form factor (girls usually want smaller devices), prices, and what the sales rep recommends.

        • Jjjjj

I have to agree with custom colonel….go stand in a Best Buy or for that matter go to a Verizon store….alot of people do not do the research, and rely on sales reps to tell them what they should get.  Hahaha, even Verizon commercials show this.

          • Anonymous

Yeah, and the majority of those reps I talk to know all of these blog sites by name.  If someone comes in looking for something mean and powerful, don’t you think they’d tell them to wait if they knew something big was dropping on 8/4?  Every time I ask someone about these unreleased phones whether it be VZW or BB, they all say they get more inside information from these sites than their own company.

So yes, while not everyone does their research, those guiding the blind *do*.

          • This statement goes against my experience. I wish my VZW store reps were down with DL, AC, etc. Consider yourself in the minority on this.

        • Anonymous

The last time I was in a VZW store I couldn’t help but overhear a woman talking to a sales rep about smartphones. She was clearly a new (potential) smartphone customer. He told her how with a smartphone she’d be able to get on the web from the phone and her response was, “What’s the web?”

      • Anonymous

Original Droid owners indeed have a clue. It’s the ones who opted for the Droid Eris on that same day that probably don’t know about Bionic. 🙂

        • Anonymous

I’d agree with you, if like the G1, it had little marketing upon launch… But that is simply not the case. There are 4 distinctive segments of OG Droid owners. 1- those that bought it because of how great a device it was, 2-those talked into buying one by those insegment one, 3- those that bought it because it was as “close to an iPhone” as you could get on VZW at the time and finally 4- those that got caught up in the marketing campaign.

Out of those groups, only segment 1 and possibly a subset of segment 2 did or do research… The rest, at best look to see what others around them are using.

      • my brother knows and he dont come on these websites

  • Sorry Motorola, but now that AndroidCentral has confirmed the specs of the new Nexus and that it’s coming out on Verizon in October… the Bionic no longer interests me.  Shareholders should be calling for Sanjay’s head.

    • Mineral21

      Where/what did they confirm?

      • They didn’t confirm the date yet, but they confirmed the specs and that it’s coming to Verizon. Other sites are saying October.

        Here’s the link:
        http://forums.androidcentral.com/rumored-devices/106291-nexus-prime.html

See page two for the bit about him confirming it.

        • Manny

Unless you have Google or Samsung actually coming out and saying that all those specs are confirmed, it’s all rumor. I can make a post on there and pretend I’m a Samsung employee and say that a revolutionary feature we’ve put into the phone is the ability for it to walk your dogs. Doesn’t mean it’s confirmed.

          • Phil Nickinson, who is the Chief Editor at Android Central, is the one that confirmed it with his sources and the one that is posting the info. It’s not some random guy claiming that he knows all.

    • they didnt confirm it keep smoking that crack

  • I hope Moto Knows that vary soon Samsung is coming out with the SGII and if it does comes out for verizon first then you can kiss a ton of sales of this phone away!

  • TurbineTech

I wanted to +1 this cause it sounds like a concrete release date, but I can’t cause I wanted it Aug 4. Now I just want to cry…

  • Larry Mao

Man, now I’m conflicted. On the one hand, I hate Motorola for their locked bootloaders, their insistence of polluting Android with their Blur crap UI/ crappy software, but at the same time, this is an awesome phone, with a webtop too! The SGSII looks good, but Samsung support in the US is abysmal (most SGS in the US don’t even have Gingerbread and just got Froyo). I bet anything that Motorola will get Ice Cream Sandwich on the Bionic before Samsung even makes it to Gingerbread on US based Galaxy S phones.

    • Anonymous

It will probably take until then to work out all the bugs.

If they hold this phone until after the SGS2 comes out they might as well not even release it.

    • EC8CH

It’s a conspiracy to keep usage down on their new 4G LTE network 😉

    • Anonymous

Like I’ve said for a while, if the SGS2 drops before the Bionic, gave over for the Motorola phone division.  Epic fail.

  • If the GS2 comes out in August (which is the expectation) and its 4G what is the point of the Bionic? Motorola really dropped the ball if this phone comes out in August. The Sprint version of the GS2 is 4G, it’s difficult to be believe the VZW won’t be as well.

  • Asshats run Motorolla!!! this device needed to hit BEFORE the SGSII or the new *phone. Moto get ready to have crappy 3rd and 4th quarters, with your end of year in the red!  Glad i sold your stock back in Feb.

  • EC8CH

I’m intrigued by the idea of 4G… but I’m disgusted by encrypted bootloaders… and I’m aroused by the GSII 😛

    • But, really, what’s more arousing than a phone that teases you for 9 months before putting out?

  • Screw this, bring on the SG2!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

If the Bionic is unlocked, you can keep your shitty plastic SGSII. The D3 is extremely fast and if this is faster and the screen is actually better, like it says above, then I will have a blazing fast phone with speeds that make most home internet feel like dial up.

      • Shitty plastic?  What is the Bionic made out of?  *IF* its unlocked, and what *if* the sgs2 is 4g?

        • Anonymous

The SGS2 will not be 4G, but if it were, I would get it. Motorola has some of the best build quality in the industry.

          • GotSka81

I wouldn’t be so sure…and besides, the SG2 is clearly the superior device.  I’ve said it here multiple times…how can we support moto (who hates the dev community and constantly lies to it’s customers) and not samsung (who has given free GS2s to the cyanogen team)?  It’s time for us droid-lifers to put our money where our mouth is!

          • Ranlil

If it has LTE, I’ll be done waiting…

          • Anonymous

Superior device simply because it’s unlocked?  That doesn’t matter to everyone.

          • Niemeyer18

Yah, but I’m sure Motorola devices will get updated to the latest version of Android WAY before the GSII….. just take the GSI for example…

          • L Latus

That is what I’m talkin about!  People need to stop jumping back into Motorolas boat of empty promises and supporting a company that appreciates their community.

Seriously, why spend that much money on a phone and they STILL claim it is theirs?  That you can’t modify it?

“Oh hey you just bought a new car?  Guess what, you can’t change out the spark plugs because it is still our car!  We built it so it is always ours.”  Could you imagine?!

          • I have no issues with Moto, I’m just tired of waiting.

          • Anonymous

@MicroNix I have to agree, I love my OG Droid but I’ve had plenty of problems. I’ve had 4 of them. The first one my screen randomly started shutting off. The second one (refurb) my internal speaker died. My thrid one the sensor that turns the phone screen off when you put it by your face malfunctioned (3 minutes after I got it activated from the verizon support people) and would constantly turn the screen off even when it wasn’t near your face. The fourth refrub I have hasn’t had any problems but I know its only a matter of time before the same fate befalls this one. Now I am a big fan of Moto and I love my OG Droid, but because of the problems I’ve had with this phone plus lack of support from Moto for updates, I didn’t buy a D2G or a D3… Plus with Moto’s failed promises with the Xoom I think Moto has lost me as a customer. If I’m shelling upwards of $300 for a phone I expect it to last the length of my contract and to be honest it better be a superphone.

          • Anonymous

            Agreed.

          • Anonymous

Yeah, like all the OG Droids that are failing *before* their 2 year contract is up?  Build quality….are you kidding me?   Just because it feels like a brick doesn’t mean there’s any build quality.  Go check an OG Droid forum once and see how many of these are dying.  All while people are still using their 3 year old iPhone 3GS’s yet.  Screw Moto.  If the SGS2 drops before the Bugonic, I’ll gladly take it LTE or not.  I’d rather have a fast, proven phone than something that keeps getting delayed because the manufacturer can’t find their rear end with both hands.

I totally agree on your last statement.  The OG Droid was shafted out of Gingerbread (which actually ran faster than Froyo) and if it wasn’t for the dev community would still be running Froyo.  These phone manufacturers need to be in it for the long haul.  If I drop good money for a smart phone, I’m expecting updates for it for the duration of my contract.  At the very very least, 2 years of updates from the day it goes on sale, but ideally (for the consumer) 2 years after sales stop of the device.

What are you, dim?  Go to the crApple forum and see how many people complain about problems and failing iPhone’s.  People go to support forums to vent their frustration when they have problems, that is not indicative of a large percentage failing.  My Droid is still as good as the day I bought it.

          • Anonymous

My OG Droid *was* as good as the day I got it until Moto’s high quality digitizer started failing a slow death until 100% of the screen was no longer touch sensitive.  Go hang out in some OG Droid forums and see how many of these have gone bad.  And this was with a phone that was babied.  Hardly even a scratch on it.

On the flip side, I know 10 different people either with an iPod Touch or iPhone 3GS or  iPhone 4 that haven’t had one issue not to mention some my family has owned over 2 years.  Being that I have devices from Apple, HTC and Moto, I think I’m fairly certain I have some ground to speak on.  How about you?

          • Pennywise

Both of my brother’s i*hones have died. A 3Gs and and i*hone 4.  My OG, purchased on day 1, is running faster than it ever has (faster than my friend’s Incredible 2) with the latest PE.  Every single product is going to have ‘horror stories’ and ‘never had a single issue’ stories.

The Galaxy S2 will not have LTE on Verizon (at least not in 2011). Hypothetically, if the Sammy arrived tomorrow with LTE, I’d be happy to wait until September for the Bionic ; )

I really don’t think this is true.  Ask the OG Droid owners how their phone is holding up.  I switched to the Droid X about a year ago, but after very gentle use my OG Droid was suffering after a year.  I have no doubt in my mind that my OG Droid would not have lasted two entire years.

          • Jbarb

I agree….still running with my OG Droid, never had an issue and not in any hurry to switch phones. I guess I might be in the minority but I don’t need to update to a new phone every other month because it can now search the web at .oooo1 seconds faster than the old phones that came out way back in June. the OGDroid would still be perfect if it just had some more RAM, but still amazing how great it runs!

          • Anonymous

Mine lasted 1 year and 1 month before it started having screen issues.  It then progressed to nearly unusable in May (when the Bionic was first rumored to drop so I waited) and in June died completely.  I’ve been without a smart phone (on contract mind you) waiting for the Bionic to drop but now with the SGS2 coming possibly before the Bionic, I am thinking I will show Moto my disgust with their “build quality” with my wallet and pass up the Bionic.

I am an OG Droid owner. Hardware wise, this thing is awesome. It is lacking in RAM but everything else is fine. I have taken really good care of it(NO CASE OR SCREEN PROTECTORS THOUGH). I am running Project Elite 6.5 and I am really impressed. I had an LG Revolution and this is much faster(other than Data speeds) and heavy multitasking.

          • rick

my OG is running fine.  going on 2+ years.  PE roms keep the thing alive and fresh for me.  it is starting to show its age tho.

          • RogerDroid

Question:  You got your OG Droid on or before 07/27/09?

          • Anonymous

Why not? Sprint’s version is WiMAX.

          • Anonymous

LTE chips are much bigger than WiMax chips

          • Rayzkain

Sprints (Within) will be 4G why not Verizon’s (Function)

          • Anonymous

The LTE chips are much larger than the WiMax chips. Not all 4G is equal.

“If the Bionic is unlocked”   I think there is a better chance of it snowing on Sept 1st.  Just ask a Xoom owner how much faith to put into that one.

Edit: I’m not anti-Moto and may buy a device from them again. However it won’t be based on future promises.

        • Joshfriedman86

There is a chance of snow in September if you live in Cleveland 🙂

          • Anonymous

And I live in the Akron area so, it may be snowing here by then.

          • Jordan

Youngstown here… snow what? in september…? nahhhhh lol we have a better chance of snow in september than getting 4g in our area 🙁

          • Adam Elghor

well i live in Minnesota soo……

          • Djstar2k2

in the dyt so i believe i saw youngstown so u should check the lte map

          • Ocbpartee05

I live in Mentor Ohio, and anything’s possible here! lol

          • Ryan L Thornton

Erie, PA checking in… So r0landct is saying the Bionic will be unlocked?  Everyone post this all over the net, quickly!

        • they said all moto devices unlocked in november

          • Motorola also told me my XOOM would have 4G in May

          • Atst88

This made me laugh. Maybe because they said they same thing to me, and I believed it.

          • Anonymous

I found that funny too but yesterday they released a flyer that said the Xoom’s will be eligible for the 4G LTE upgrade in september.  At least now there is a date for the LTE upgrade.

          • Anonymous

I wouldn’t send out the invites for your unlock party in November just yet.  They said they will IF the carriers allow.  I’m not saying it won’t happen, I’m just saying I hope no one buys the phone based on the fact it will definitely be unlocked, or done in the time frame they promise.

        • Well the XOOM has a unlockable bootloader.

Sure no 4G, but we do have a unlockable bootloader.

The proc in the SGSII is far more powerful than the one in the droid 3 and supposedly the Bionic will have the same, and no matter how much moto “improves” that screen it will never touch the Super Amoled Plus

        • Anonymous

          No, sorry.  Wrong.

      • No handset on the market is faster than the SGS2, and no amount of crying about plastic–which really isn’t much more than grasping at straws to make a very desperate point–will make the Bionic better.

Also, an unlocked Motorola handset? LOL. Get real.

        • The funny thing about what your phone is made of: People prefer different materials. It’s based on preference. There is no definitive ”winner” in this category. I don’t have to “cry about plastic” because I already *gasp* MADE A DECISION and bought my D3.
I think it’s hillarious how people dig in and become fan boys of either the Bionic or the SGS2. No phone is gonna be perfect. Make a list of deal breakers, find a phone that has the most of your deal breakers and buy that one…. how hard is it…

The D3 also takes the crappiest looking pictures.  Didn’t you see the side by side with the SGS2?  If you didn’t, its a real eye opener on how Moto can’t even get picture taking right on these.  Stuff a 8MP camera in a phone only to have it take crappy pictures?  Come on.  I’ll take plastic and perfection over a brick.  And the D3 fast, yes for most things but have you seen the videos with lag?  Yes, on a dual core phone.  BTW, isn’t the entire back cover plastic on the D3/Bionic?

        • Listen to this fanboy! LMAO @ perfection! You’re trippin’. Or you are brainwashed. NO PHONE WILL BE PERFECT lmfao these people…

As soon as I heard, “has the same screen as the DX2 and the D3,” I had the same thought. Not having a screen that is up to speed with an Amoled is one thing, but pawning off a new phone with a screen that doesn’t “look” as good as some of their old products, shame on you. I have had my phone (DX) side by side with a Charge and a DX2. Charge blows the DX out of the water (not even remotely close), but my old Droid X looks far better than those Pentiles on the DX2. I don’t care about what the specs say, I have seen the light. Looks like Daddy is gonna get a Super AMOLED on his new phone.

    • Spikepark

Agree!  I’m done waiting for the Droid Bionic (by the time it comes out, we’ll be wanting phones with 2012 specs, not 2011 specs).  SGSII is the way to go as- 5 M units already sold.  Also, look at the bottom of the Droid Bionic, it’s the same looking cheap shiny coating as on the bottom of the Droid 3.  My OG Droid is much better quality.  Moto has taken a nose dive with their phones.

    • Pennywise

LOL – I wouldn’t buy the Sammy if it dropped tomorrow with LTE.  BRING ON THE BIONIC 😀

  • Joshua Granville

Screen looks a lil weird under that gallery widget did you censor out some apps or something?

Galaxy S2 anyone?  Sadly, we know VZ won’t release the GS2 until this one comes out so I guess we are waiting a little bit longer for both devices.

    • Blueethernov13

yes, Galaxy S2..this phone doesn’t even look sexy anymore…it just looks like my Droid X…i don’t want it, i’m done with Motorola, i wanna try something new….something FRESH.

  • Kris Brandt

    Another month?  Awww…

at this point, i’ll believe it when i see it
