Custom ROM Friday: Project Elite 6.5 For “OG” DROID

Apparently there are thousands of people who have been waiting for this ROM to be released, and luckily for all of you, last night our dear friend Actngrezy and Mojo Droid uploaded it for the masses. Project Elite 6.5 is based off Android 2.3.4 and is going to make your OG DROID run smooth as butter. Plus, there is even an alternative themed ROM if stock coloration doesn’t tickle your fancy.

What’s even better news is that the developers recently received a DROID Incredible, and you may be seeing Project Elite on multiple devices in the future. Fingers crossed, people. So enough talk, let’s get to flashing!

For Rooted Motorola DROID Only!

Changelog

Download: Project Elite 6.5 UNthemed.zip

Download: Project Elite 6.5 THEMED.zip (Stock Gingerbread, but has replaced all orange with green.)

Place the zip on the root of your SD Card and then boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. Wipe all your data/cache (for safer installation) and then proceed to install ROM. If coming from earlier version of Project Elite, wipe may not be necessary. Users, proceed with caution.

To shoot down the early questions – No, this will not work on any phone besides the Motorola DROID. Not the Eris, and not your Nook Color. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them below in the comments section, or check out the original forum post. Have fun, and be safe.

Make sure to follow Actngrezy and Mojo Droid on Twitter, and check out their website!

Anyone still curious about PE6.5 vs GPA16…

I used GPA15 for about 1 month before upgrading to 16 when it was released. I liked the absolute stock experience from GPA and was willing to give up CM’s features for it. When I saw this article I switched just to try it out… and WOW.

I cannot believe how drastic the performance increase was. I will most likely not be going back to GPA.

    Good luck all!

  • Sparking22

cant seem to get my DROID to reboot to Recovery so i can flash new roms. currently running CM7 and needing a change! I even tried the old method(holding power and X) before I had Clockwork Mod Recovery. Any Ideas how to fix this??

    • Sparking22

any ideas how to fix this???

    • Anonymous

I also had this problem flashing from the original ROM. I ended up having to reflash the recover console a few times and it suddenly started working. I didn’t work out the exact sequence I went through to make it work, but it did work eventually.

  • Vnvjeep

This thing is the bomb… couple of things you want to keep in mind to make your experience the best …

    1) If using TB, don’t restore system settings … just downloaded apps/data. Yeah you’ll need to punch all those settings back in… 5mins if pain… big deal.
    2) I would highly recommend running the v6 memory supercharger script. It works incredible, and have been able to multitask just like back on 2.2. It even keeps ADW loaded at all times with absolutely NO redraws!

Enjoy! Thanks again actngrezy and mojo!

  • MattInPDX

Holy crap this thing is fast. Best GB ROM for the OG Droid IMHO. I’ve used CM7 and GPA15/6 before this.

  • Djlowproz

sticking with Peter Alfonso 2.2.2. stock rooted to many probs running gingerbread on my droid

  • http://twitter.com/Vezquex Veƶqueӽ

These fuckers can’t even spell, and we’re supposed to trust them with our OS? Yeah, no dice.

    Sticking with Peter Alfonso.

    • Keith Sumner

You’re an ass dude, I’m pretty sure they’re foreign. Project Elite is top tier, one of the BEST roms for the Droid, period.

    • ogbionicsoon

youre an idiot, PE and cm7 dont freeze while loading the web like GPA15/16

      • Travis

has anyone compared this ROM’s to Peter Alfonso’s latest?  Pete’s is pretty kickass, but if performance is better with this one, id flash again.  Have to say though, over a week with GPA16 & it’s awesome

    • RCTP10

P.E is by far the best rom for the og, dont be a hatter, these guys do all this stuff so assholes like you can enjoy all there hard erned time and effort for free. GO BUY A I*HONE HATTER.

  • Kttemplin

So far, really fast on my OG Droid. The fastest ROM I’ve flashed yet. I’ll judge tomorrow night, though, after seeing how long the battery life is and if it slows down at all.

  • Nik Rager

I have been running v6 since its release, and it was getting real laggy on me after wiping and re-installing. Had this not come out, I was days away from putting my OG to rest in the tech drawer and getting a BB. Thank you PE team for keeping me from giving up.

  • Wxfreak

Is there a low voltage CPU setting for overclocking?

  • Yonnor

    Best ROM ever! I wish I didn’t get the D3 now :(

  • Anonymous

Went from CM7 to try PE out and I’m liking it so far, except I’m having a problem with scrolling. When I flick down to scroll fast, it jumps back up instead of just stopping at the bottom. It happens in menus, messaging and my app drawer.

I can’t find any settings for smooth scrolling or such either. Help?

  • Pennywise

wow so far this is really smooth compared to CM7

  • guest

this rom is a kanged cm7

    • Jay34

if it was a kanged cm7 it would have theme changer and notification profiles like all other cm based roms. that alone should make you wonder whats so different. obvioulsy is based off aosp. Actngrexy has been aosp from the gate and has always admitted he uses some cm features and fixes but you can tell if you would load the rom that there is no way. like lockscreeb background wallpapers and custom locking of apps in memory have been in the rom well before any other

      • guest

but there is one setting in the Project Elite settings that blatantly state something about Cyanogenmod. I cannot find exactly where because I have already went back to CM7 but its definitely in there.

        • http://twitter.com/Justinwrites Justin True Anderson

You’re smokin’ rock dude.  I just went through all the PE Settings and there is nothing about it.  But every droid is different.  CM5 rocked my droid 6&7 have been garbage on my droid.  I was on my way back to Froyo but so far this works wonders for me.  And my dev is better than your dev is lame even for web standards.

  • Finlay1694

If I currently have Cyanogenmod on my OG DROID how do I put Project Elite 6.5?????

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisCorp ChristopherCorpening

    My question: P.E. or CM7?

    • http://twitter.com/Justinwrites Justin True Anderson

Depends entirely on your droid.  Mine hates CM7.

  • Kane1619

If I currently have the latest cyanogenmod, how do I put this on my OG Droid?

    I’m a newbie!

  • QQMore

Anyone have a comparison between this and SS 5.4?  Thinking of trying it out just looking for opinions before I jump.

  • http://twitter.com/CallOnColin Colin Huber

Is there any way to avoid wiping?

    • Anonymous

You can always try if you’re already on PE v5 but certainly not on any other rom.

  • http://twitter.com/MrBouche MrBouche

Wow, just hours after I installed MIUI. Hmm. D’oh.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Marley07 Jesse Isaac McCall

Did anybody else ever have problems with the last version of Project Elite not receiving text messages sent from people?

    • http://twitter.com/CallOnColin Colin Huber

Yeah, I did. It’s caused by Gingerbread’s ability to monitor applications and usage by closing them down automatically, kind of like a taskiller, and we all know how much those suck. But my text message issue seemed to fix when I saved my STOCK MESSAGING application to memory. (I recommend using the stock app just because I don’t trust anything else to deliver my ish right.) Do it like this —>

Settings–>Elite Settings–>Performance–>Lock Apps in Memory–>Lock First App (don’t do too many, though)

      • http://www.facebook.com/Marley07 Jesse Isaac McCall

Did that completely rectify the situation? If so I might flash this one back.

        • http://twitter.com/CallOnColin Colin Huber

Yeah, it did for me. About three weeks ago I noticed I wasn’t getting texts. Sometimes I wouldn’t get five or six a day (but they had shown as being received on my Verizon usage bill). So I went ahead and saved it to memory and I haven’t missed one yet.

        • http://twitter.com/Justinwrites Justin True Anderson

I had that on every other GB Rom but this one.  So far this one is fine.  I use Google Voice for my texting too.

  • Vonny571

I am loving this! Feels like I’ve got a brand new phone…except for the broken power button and cracked screen. I wish Verizon would get a phone I could get excited about upgrading to, but until then, Project Elite keeps me satisfied! Can’t wait for someone to port the Honeycomb Theme!

  • Shottylean

My Gmail constantly force closes… Any ideas?

    • Paulding

Before installing, did you wipe/format all (system, boot, data, cache, and dalvik) as specified by the dev?  Try force stopping gmail, clear data, clear cache in the app, uninstall, and reinstall from the market.  Maybe also try ‘Fix Permissions’.

      • Shottylean

I wiped data before installing, I am currently re installing it.

        • Shottylean

          It is working now. :D

  • Paulding

This is a great ROM.  It works far better for me than GPA16.  Only issues are it can’t play .wma music files (like all GB roms I tried) and the bluetooth lady doesn’t give voice prompts.

  • Negativerxn

I’ll stick with Simply Stunning.  Been running it for over a year now.

Downloading now. About damn time, P.E was by far the fastest and smoothest rom out there for the O.G. Very glad they’re finally releasing. Wish Moto and Google could see their work, cause these are some bad ass developers. Thanks Actngrezy. Glad I still have my O.G. still waiting for that true succesor though.

    • Rick

Agreed…I’ve tried many roms… PE is the smoothest and most stable.

      • Anonymous

        Faster than LGB 2.3?

        • Jam120992

yea i have lgb and its so smooth im scard to switch

        • John

PE is the only ROM that tears me away from Liquid..

    • djsuperior

BUTTER Is all I can say so far. Just what I expected. Super stable have not lost 3g at all. More snappier then something that’s really snappier(tow mater voice)   lol!!!!! ;))))

  • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

How does this compare to GPA16? I know that Pete has fixed a lot of issues with Gingerbread running on phones with low memory. Does anyone know if things like that were addressed here?

I hate to be the annoying questions guy, but I also don’t like flashing ROMs without thinking I’ll like them, because it takes my phone an hour or two to recover from wiping the cache, which is just plain annoying.

    • Ryan C

I feel the same way. i have been deciding on GPA16 but now this looks pretty tempting.. i wanted stock as in Pete’s ROM but this PE looks pretty much stock except for some very nice and cool features. Now i have more deciding to do…

      • FastLane1000

Do it, you won’t be sorry

      • Anonymous

        PE > all else

    • OreoMan

P.E. ROMs are like GPA ROMs.  The Project Elite team has added extra options on top of their ROM (Hotboot, GUI Reboot only, CPU Overclocking, Davlik Cahe Clearing from settings, etc.)  While I just loaded Pete’s GPA16 (very smooth by the way) I prefer the extra options and themes that P.E. allows me to use.  I will probably use The aforementioned ROMs for as long as my OG stays alive, but P.E. has been very good for my taste and will have to flash this one tonight!

  • Christephor

gpa16 is like a 71 Pinto. PE is like a new Bugatti.

      • Christephor

so what would that make cm    el oh el

        • P!X3L

CM is great on pretty much all other handsets I’ve tried it on. The step to CM7 from CM6 has been tough on the Droid. Really it just seems like no gingerbread rom runs well with the cpu clocked under 1ghz.

  • Anonymous

I wish these guys would make a ROM for the TB.  I miss this on the old OG.

  • http://twitter.com/unapologeticPJ Paul Johnson

CM was killing my battery life so I went to GPA and I love the simplicity.

    • Anonymous

Which version were you on?  I can go 2 days without a recharge on CM 7.0.3.

      It’s 4:15pm right now where I’m at and I have 80% left.

Best ROM out for the OG! A major reason I still have mine…. and the fact that Motorola has seriously dropped the ball

I’ve been waiting for a new release from these guys for quite a while. The best ROM I ever ran on my OG was an older version. Cyanogen is a buggy POS in comparison. I might be flashing this over the weekend, I bet my OG is excited to try and earn its permanent home in my pocket back from my shiny new Droid 3.

Also, I haven’t seen a custom theme/ROM Friday in MONTHS. Brings me back to the good old days when I was flashing something new every few days and I loved these posts. Thank you.

Better than CM7?  If so, why?  (I don’t doubt you, just would like to know the specifics)

    • Anonymous

I tried the Project Elite version before this one. It was a very solid ROM, but I started to miss some of the extra features of Cyanogen. So eventually went back to CM, but it was a good experience with PE.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shannon-C-Kerr/827781725 Shannon C. Kerr

OK if it doesn’t have the settings in the notifications drop down, that would not be good.  What were some features you missed from CM7?

        • Anonymous

Hard to remember. Just little stuff like the LED color changer and possibly the notification widgets (I don’t know if PE has that now or not). I’m running MIUI now and really like it, but it gets really sluggish sometimes. So I may go back to CM or PE.

          • P!X3L

Notification widgets are part of PE. Couldn’t live without them. (btw notification widgets are not on GPA16)

          • Anonymous

I am on miui at the moment as well and it can be a little bit sluggish sometimes but I did a complete wipe and eveything and downloaded the updated one .15 I believe and its much smoother, and this would be the FIRST rom I have not thrown a 3rd party launcher on top of. I had cm7 as well before and am a huge fan especially the nightlies they just keep getting better, they even started throwing in a screenshot option from the power menu, never seen that before. Also might want to check out deprimed kernel for miui it helps a lot with some of the lag, pushing mid 1500 as regular score on quadrant with it.

          • Anonymous

Thanks for the tips. Do you know how I would fix apps loading slow? When I
click on the app it will load the screen right away but it takes about five
seconds for the content to load. Would the kernel help that?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

Since it’s an OG DROID, every single ROM is different on that device. Give it a go, and see if you like it.
We ran a poll for DROID users, and more than 68% (or something like that) of them used Project Elite over CM7.

      Give it a go ;)

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shannon-C-Kerr/827781725 Shannon C. Kerr

If it runs ‘smooth as butter’, I might just have to.

          • Anonymous

Put it like this- I was GPA16 user till about 2 hours ago.  :)  PE destroys it.

      • Irsl8er

How does it cmpare to Ultimate droid?  Ive been runing that for over 3 months, and it too is smooth as butter.  Why don’t the ultimate droid guys get any love?

        • Anonymous

I personally found that PE ran a lot smoother on my OG than either UD or CM. Here are a couple of other acronyms: SCUBA, PSX, LASER, IP.

      • Papoose34328

have to thank droid-life for posting about PE way back when v4 dropped! i’ve been with them ever since. i did switch to different ROMs here and there for about a day since i was “craving” the release of gb with other ROMS but I always went back to PE since it was so stable.

    • Anonymous

Yes, I had bugs on CM7; PE has been completely stable and faster for me.  To be honest I wasn’t impressed with CM other than the theme engine, PE has nearly every option and more.

  • my00si

Heck yes!!!!!  Been waiting for this!  Best rom around

    • Anonymous

OMG I just installed this in place of GPA16 and I’m stunned.  It’s so much better.  I guess I should give it a few days to see how it holds up, but after an extensive first play I’m impressed- way more features and much smoother.  Thanks for putting me on D-L!
