DROID3 Gets Benchmarked, It Was Just a First Run (Updated)

Update:  Just like we assumed, that benchmark was a first run.  We’ve received another batch that were done after the device warmed up a bit and the results are much more favorable.

I’m not going to start making excuses for the DROID3 yet, but I’m certainly hoping that this was a first run after its first boot up because this is embarrassing.  In the days of phones with dual-core processors (this phone being one), we’ve got to at least break 2000 on a Quadrant benchmark.  After all, single core devices that have been overclocked can certainly eclipse the 1700 mark.  To see what real benchmarks look like, you’ll want to check out this post we ran for the Galaxy S II and the DROIDX2.

To be fair though, we know that most benchmarks mean nothing and we also haven’t handled the device yet to run it through the DL set of tests.  So I’ll try to hold back too many opinions, but what I will do though, is ask that all of our readers who received D3s early, post up their top benchmarks. This is not exactly what we were hoping to see from an OMAP4 – especially with the DROID Bionic likely running one.

Linpack score after the break.

Cheers ShadowOfAnAndroid!

I was pleased with my benchmark at 2430. And off topic not sure if I am ready to do the google+ though I already was invited in.

  • http://twitter.com/Urboyissues Yourissues

I love this community.. I really do.. we are always helping each other.. If you need/want an invite for G+ let me know.. Yourissues@gmail.com email me and just title it G+ Invite.. Also if this phone was 4G I would have it today… just don’t want a sleek sick phone that has a shelf life… if VZW goes all 4G by 2013 I think they wanted it to be.. what can i go with this?

  • Stephen

I agree about the spamming, I’m all for getting people on G+ but it gets tough to read comments.  Maybe Kellex can bump a G+ page for people to ask for invites til their heart’s content

    • eddieonofre

men i just am in a mission to get G+ around coz I’m really starting to hate FB so i want G+ to get viral

I don’t expect the D3 to outdo the SGS2 for a variety of reasons, but I would like it to beat down the X2. The OMAP and DDR2 should position it ahead of the Tegra.

    • http://profiles.google.com/statsprofessor Jakub Palka

      They both have ddr2.

      • Anonymous

No… I’m pretty sure you’re wrong. The DX2 has DDR. The D3 has DDR2 because it is required by the OMAP processor.
Maybe you mean both of their processors are dual-core?

  • http://profiles.google.com/statsprofessor Jakub Palka

Every tech site should use quadrant advance so we can get a little deeper in to the numbers.

    Probably can’t afford it….

So hows that pentile display? is it really bad or can you not really tell? I’m curious

    • Anonymous

You can’t tell except for certain situations, like small blue text produces a pattern effect.

My Droid 3 did almost 2500 on the Quadrant

It pulled 58.3 FPS on Neocore

and it was almost identical to my Samsung Galaxy S2 on Smartbench 2011

I am guessing they did not reboot the phone after all of the initial downloads before running the benchmarks

  • Matthew A Nicholson

Got mine today, writing this on it in fact. New blur is okay, but the entire system got way more snappy as soon as I switched launchers to ADW…I should bench…

    • Anonymous

sweet. I think the new Blur is actually pretty cool. I like the shading on the widgets and flexibility. The text messaging is pretty cool and they added Bold, italics, and under line. It does not seem to be slowing it down allot either. How is the memory doing, do you still have plenty left for multi-tasking?

  • Anonymous

You can have a high quadrant but not enough power. Power is what a phone can do without slowing down. Speed is what a phone can do one thing at a time. You need power for multi-tasking. Droid 1 owners know this. My OG Droid can do 1577 quads but when it comes to multi-tasking it slows down and can start lagging depending how many things i’m trying to do.

    • Anonymous

You need RAM to do good multitasking. The problem with the Droid 1 is that we only have 256 RAM so Android closes apps that we want open. It has to restart services all the time that phones with more RAM can keep open.

  • http://profiles.google.com/chrisleighton3 Chris Leighton

Maybe its because Motorola uses unimaginably shitty GPU’s and companies like Samsung and HTC use Adreno’s and the like. I bet the GPU in this thing is hardly better or maybe even the same as in my X.

    • http://profiles.google.com/statsprofessor Jakub Palka

HTC sensation/evo3d benchmark the same or lower than this. They are complete turds of dual cores.

      What are you talking about?

HTC evo 3d @1.8ghz only ran ~2900, It’s what a stock atrix does at 1.0ghz

    • http://profiles.google.com/statsprofessor Jakub Palka

Go to smartbench gaming and see what Samsung Exynos and Adreno does…….lol

    • Leroybrute30

I am consistently getting 2800 to 3100 highest being 3103 on my stock dx2. 4790 on antutu. Why is mine running so high? I once in a while get a 2500 but not much.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bjnunn Brandon J. Nunn

This phone has the same GPU as the Nexus S 4G and many other Samsung devices…  Yes this is the first time Moto has upgraded from the PowerVR SGX530 to the 540 (not their fault – limited by the OMAP platform).  So some the the other phones had a slower GPU, but this phone has a good one.

    • T Hall

There is no basis for this at all. Moto is known for the high end components in their devices…

Also it is quite possibly the first processor to get the Netflix HD certification.

      http://www.droid-life.com/2011/07/05/tis-omap4-processor-is-first-to-receive-netflix-hd-certification-droid3-just-got-a-lot-more-attractive/

Looks like it should be a little higher… That is about the same as a DX2 running FroYo.  Still pretty good though.

Sounds like someone are trying to downplay droids and build up galaxies….

I’m sure it will do a lot more in the right hands. Run smart bench instead.

But why would anyone think omap and qHD would produce high benchmarks???

    • http://profiles.google.com/chrisleighton3 Chris Leighton

Because OMAP’s are epic. The PowerVR GPU’s suck though.

      • Anonymous

Uh…..no.  PowerVR has the best gpus available.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Rathbun/100000625605463 David Rathbun

you need to remember you are running a much higher resolution with the QHD to the tune of about 26% higher than a 800 x 480 resolution screens

  • Sam Stern

This has to be a bad benchmark, because my Droid2 can kill that.

I have a D2 running CM7 and overclocked to 1300/1000/800/400 and I recently got a 2682 Quadrant and a 21 Linpack.   I’ve always found Linpack to be the best Android benchmark.  For example my D1 got 5 on Linpack out of the box, 9 once it got to Froyo, D2 got 13 out of the box, and 21 with all the good stuff I have done to it, and those numbers are very indicative of the devices’ comparative responsiveness (not a linear trend obviously, but you know what I mean).

    • Anonymous

      Whoa, LOL nice avatar!

Low score, pentile screen, locked loader, shall I continue..not new, have been a contributer. As a former owner of the D1, D2, Eris, incredible, tbolt, charge, and still went back to my X, I expected more from the flagship phone.

The score looks better now. Still unhappy about this phone. I would have really preferred this phone had it been packed with some better stuff. 4G, better screen, drop the number row and make the keys bigger, unlocked bootloader.

Am I asking too much? Yes. But considering that the Droid 1 was truly a remarkable phone when it launched, I expected it’s sibling to do the same. I am looking for a phone that won’t make me regret buying it 2 months later when something else comes out. My D1 would have lasted me the full 2 years had it not broken. I personally went from the D1 to D2 to DX to Charge and back to DX. My wife went from Eris to Incredible, to Tbolt, and now she is on the Charge.

Slap the Samsung screen of the Charge on this D3, a 4G LTE radio, make a bigger version of the original keyboard, make it easy to root or unlock,  and I would be as happy as a pig in mud for the next 2 years. That is what I was hoping for out of the newest bad boy on the block.

        • where is my bionic

What in the world does someone need 7 phones in roughly 2 years for?

          • Anonymous

Variety? For me, the majority was spent 1yr with D1, second year DX. I live
in a strange part of my city and the coverage is spotty. My wife prefers HTC
but we kept having to send them back because they kept dropping connection
and calls. MOTO has a superior antenna so I never had that problem. She went
Eris, Incredible, Thunderbolt. We ultimately dumped that for a Charge.
Apparently, it does not suffer from the same problem in my area. VZW
actually did a site survey with engineers just for my wife’s problems. No
            more HTC for us.

I’m on my 4th phone in a year and a half and the answer is easy.

Many people bought a Droid 1 when it came out. We fell in love with it and all of the amazing things it could do. All the roms and customizing and we got hooked!

When the next Droids came out we wanted more power and larger screens… And everything would have been great but there were bumps in the road… (Locked bootloaders).

Sadly the phones are getting better but nothing yet has lived up to what could have been.

This is why I am currently on the T-Bolt and loving it…it can be fully unlocked. And I’ve never had an issue with my phone like so many.

  • Anonymous

People are reporting much higher Quadrant scores in various forums. Between 2200 and 2600. Was that a single or multi-thread Linpack? I find 42 hard to believe.

  • Alan Paone

Isn’t that linpack like 3 times the droid2′s score?

    • http://www.facebook.com/bjnunn Brandon J. Nunn

Yes but it is half that of the Droid X2 with a Tegra 2.  This processor was expected to outperform the Tegra 2.  So… It could be the UI Formerly Known as Blur is causing the slowdown, or it could be that the benchmark tools are not configured to run properly on OMAP4 devices.  We have seen this in the past with both Linpack and Quadrant having issues with certain TI OMAP3 processors as certain phones were released.  This may very well be the case here since this is the first CDMA OMAP4430 processor.  Lets hope anyway.

people rely way to much on these scores. I’m more worried about what the phone actually has and can do rather than some number that will not benefit me whatsoever in the long run.
