None of any of the instructions make sense. I put into download mode, and Odin isn't seeing it. I think I installed all the drivers I need to but nowhere does it say what all needs to be installed, extracted, whatever. So frustrating!!!!

honestly though i have not seen any official releases or information regarding software upgrades directly at verizon wireless(i work there directly). the samsung charge just has more push and the software is being leaked from the developers and not droid-life or mydroidworld or android central or anyone else in these positions. It is definitely great that samsung is working to release updated softwares so frequently because with their other windows and android devices like the fascinate or omnia, which only recieved nominal updates with minor fixes that didnt come through with changes they promised on or just after device launch. If i am not mistaken HTC signed up with makers like samsung to release software at the point it releases from google, but i do not know if it pertains to the past or current devices since the Google i/o conventions.

You don't need to root. It is quite simple if you have used Odin before.
1. You download all the files
2. use 7z to unzip the GB file
3. remove the battery
4. open Odin and browse to the .md5 file using the pda button
5. put the phone in to download mode
6. click on start.

Once the first block on Odin says pass and the phone screen is turned off. You're done. Insert in the battery and wait for it to boot. It will take a bit on first boot.
