Capital One Releases Android App: Pay Bills, View Recent Transactions, Check Balances

by: | posted 07.31.11 | Apps, News

This seems like one of those apps that should have been out months or even a year ago, but we’ll still welcome it in with open arms.  Capital One has finally made an Android app available and for the most part, it looks pretty feature packed.  You can check balances to both checking accounts and credit cards, pay bills, view rewards information and almost any other mobile banking feature you can think of.  To gain access, simply use the same login information that is attached to your online Capital One account.

  • Pay bills
  • Transfer funds between banking accounts
  • Check balances
  • Find ATMs and branches
  • View Rewards information
  • View recent transactions
  • Contact customer service

Tablet support should be on the way soon.

Rooted Gingerbread Available for DROIDX2

by: | posted 07.31.11 | DROIDX2, News, Root

With the new Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) build for the DROIDX2 arriving to soak test members, we also welcome in a pre-rooted version for those of you who wish to continue on with superuser access.  Our buddy @P3droid put in work as he always does to make sure you can all stay current without losing root, something that has yet to be officially gained on 2.3 builds for any Motorola device.  What I mean by that, is if you update to 2.3 and lose root, there are no current methods to root except to SBF back to 2.2 and then install a pre-rooted build.

Update:  I stand corrected, the Atrix on 2.3.4 has been rooted.

The good news is that you can apparently (haven’t tested myself) still SBF back to 2.2 even on this latest 2.3 build for the DX2.  We had a feeling that Moto would lock us out, but they have at least left us one ounce of rooting safety.

Go get some!

Ubermusic Finally Lands on Android Market, Get Your Pretty Groove On

by: | posted 07.30.11 | Apps, News

Our buddy Fede, whom you all know from LauncherPro, has made his new music played called Ubermusic official.  You can find it in the market as one of the best music players we’ve used, at least UI-wise that is.  It doesn’t have the ability to sync with your Google Music account, but there’s no telling if Google will ever open up access to things like that to 3rd party app makers.  If you are storing music on your phone though, this is one heck of an option (but definitely not the cheapest).  With its buttery smooth UX and minimalist UI, automatic album art, variety of widget sizes, and scrobbling – we’re loving it.  No longer free now that it is out of beta.

AT&T Joins the Throttling Party, Plans to Slow Down Its Top Data Hogs

by: | posted 07.29.11 | News

Verizon started throttling their top dog data hogs back in February (top 5% of users) and caught a whole bunch of flack for it.  You can now toss some of the same choice words you directed at Big Red over to AT&T as they have now confirmed a report from this morning that suggested they would begin to throttle the top 5% of their unlimited data users as well.

So let us try to clarify for you – users who pay an ungodly amount of money to continue to have unlimited data (because AT&T has tiers), no longer get to fully take advantage of that unlimited data?  Correct.  Well, to be fair, the unlimited data isn’t going away, but the way in which you get to enjoy it, is.  Sounds reasonable…right…no.

But just so you know, this is only a temporary fix.  That’s right.  In order to fix the problem permanently, they will need their T-Mobile merger to be approved.  And yes, it’s OK for you to fall on the floor laughing now.

LetsTalk Offering Up the DROID3 for Free this Weekend to New Customers

by: | posted 07.29.11 | Deals, News

If you are looking to get yourself into Verizon’s hottest phone at the moment, the DROID3, you may want to check out the deal from LetsTalk that is going on this weekend.  The device can be had for as little as nothing if you purchase it as a new customer.  Not a bad deal for one of our favorite phones of the year from Big Red.  Our review can be seen here.

Buy.

Don’t forget though, that the D3 is still a part of Verizon’s BOGO (buy one get one free) back to school offer.  You may have to shell out $200, but you’ll also get a second device for free.

Cheers rocktoonz!

Peel Released on Android, Finding Your Favorite TV Shows Became A Lot Easier

by: | posted 07.29.11 | Apps, News

If you needed a new way to find and discover your favorite shows, then you’ll want to check out Peel which just made its way onto Android after being download over a million times on iOS.  The app can show you favorite programs, recommend similar shows, provide brief descriptions, remind you when they are on, and even allow you to share them with friends.

Their PR department explains it much better:

Peel uses a recommendation engine developed by a finalist from Netflix’s algorithm contest  making it an intuitive application that adapts to your viewing habits. Peel offers a visual touchscreen guide that enables you to like or dislike shows, as well as set up reminders and share your finds and your favorites with friends via Twitter and Facebook. The more you use the app, the more customized and better it gets at predicting what you want to watch.

After just a few minutes of time with it, I can tell you that the UI is looking mighty polished, it allowed me to set everything up quickly by choosing my cable provider, and is already recommending programs. Oh, and it’s free.

Friday Poll: Must Have Android Apps of the Last Month are?

by: | posted 07.29.11 | Apps, Polls

Every six weeks or so we like to poll the readers of Droid Life to see which apps they have discovered and can no longer live without.  Quality apps seem to be coming at us in waves these days, making it difficult for everyone to keep up with what’s garbage and what is “must have.”  So as usual, we want you to drop as many of your favorite new apps in the comments.

The three we seem to be using the most are DeskSMS (Koush’s new baby) which allows you to send and receive texts through either Gmail or Gtalk.  We’ve also come to realize that we are more-than addicted to Fieldrunners HD and haven’t been able to put it down.  And of course Pool Party, now that we have some friends who have moved out of 1999 and into the world of tech.

You guys?
