HTC Rep Confirms that Gingerbread is Up Next for the Thunderbolt

by: | posted 06.25.11 | News

HTC told us all the way back in March that we’d have Gingerbread (Android 2.3) on the Thunderbolt some time in Q2, but with that time frame about to come to a close, our readers are starting to get antsy.  And that means that they are reaching out to HTC to try and find out any little tidbit they can, one of which we’ve included below.  An HTC rep has confirmed that the next update for the Tbolt won’t just be to fix the reboot issues, but that it will also update the phone to Gingerbread.

Dear Adam  XXXXX,

I understand how important it is for your Thunderbolt to function properly and I apologize that you have been experiencing rebooting of the device. HTC and Verizon are aware of this issue and an update will be released soon that will address the reboot issue, and bring the Gingerbread 2.3 upgrade on board, as well as several other enhancements. Although I don’t have an official release date to provide you, this update will be released soon. Please monitor our website for further information as the release date moves closer.

To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Sincerely,

Jessica

Custom Theme Friday: Five Kovdev Themes For ADW EX And LauncherPro Plus

by: | posted 06.24.11 | Appearances, Apps, Extras

We’re quite fond of the developers like Koveleski and Tha Phlash who are always bringing us new ways to make our phones sparkle with custom goodness. What’s so great about these different themes is that you don’t even have to be rooted to enjoy them, and all you need is a home replacement launcher such as LauncherPro Plus and ADW EX.

We’re going to post links to just five, but they have a very large list of themes, with even more on the horizon. You can check out some really awesome work that they have planned by visiting Tha Phlash’s website, here.

HTC Thunderbolt Wireless Charging Battery Cover Now Available at Verizon Stores

by: | posted 06.24.11 | Accessories, News

Seriously, it’s about damn time.  The Wireless Charging Battery Cover for the HTC Thunderbolt first showed up back in April, but just like the multimedia dock (which has gone completely MIA), we’ve been stuck without it.  The good news is that it’s looking like you can walk into a Verizon store this weekend and pick one up, however that may be your only option for purchase.  For whatever reason, we’re not seeing it listed in Verizon’s online store at this time.  Cost is $29.99, but don’t forget that you’ll need the charging pad which is available for $69.99.

The Tato Series: An Interview With Actngrezy, Developer of Project Elite

by: | posted 06.24.11 | News

It’s been too long since we’ve done a developer interview here at Droid Life, and you won’t believe how many emails and tweets I get asking that we bring it back. When we ran a poll on which custom ROM users were using on their OG DROID, I saw that the majority of readers were using Project Elite, even more than CM7. I knew that I would soon be reaching out to the developer for an interview, and here it is.

Greg (“Actngrezy”) was a pleasure to chat with, and we’ll definitely be keeping good track of his future releases for all our readers. We’ve heard nothing but good coming from P.E. users, so be on the lookout for it if you haven’t already tried it.

More on Verizon’s Tiered Data Plans and How Long You Get to Stay Unlimited

by: | posted 06.24.11 | News

What you are seeing above is a Q&A sample that Verizon employees are being trained on which has to do with the new tiered data plans we first reported on earlier this week.  We’ve highlighted a couple of items that you will want to pay close attention to.

The first green box has to do with upgrades and renewals.  We’ve made it 100% clear a number of times that even after July 6, existing customers will be able to keep their unlimited data plans even during an upgrade or renewal.  The initial thought was that this could be for an extended period of time, but according to this screenshot, that has now changed to “at this time.”  How should we interpret that?  Well, I’m interpreting that as meaning there are plans to make existing customers convert to tiers at some point, much like they had to do with the New Every 2 deal that was axed at the beginning of this year.  This is just speculation, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Verizon gives existing customers all one last upgrade and renewal with unlimited data before making them choose a tier.

The second box is for those of you with feature phone lines that have unlimited data - it’s looking like you won’t be so fortunate come July 7 and thereafter.  Even if you have an unlimited plan on a “dumb” phone at this time, it apparently will not carry over to a new smartphone plan should you upgrade after the 6th.  You’ll have to choose a tier if you decide to upgrade to a 3G or 4G smartphone.

And apologies for the number of posts that have to do with tiered data, but we want to make sure that you have every little detail before this goes live.

Cheers TheGhostbuster007!
