Gingerbread for the DROID Charge About to be Leaked, Gets Teased on Video

YouTube Preview Image

The DROID Charge is rumored to be receiving Gingerbread (Android 2.3) in the very near future, but it appears now as if it’ll get leaked to all of you much sooner.  In the video above that @P3droid released over the weekend, a 2.3.3 build has been released and will be made available to rooted users shortly.  They had originally planned to release this to everyone by tomorrow, but it’s looking like there are still some bugs that need to be worked out including mobile hotspot.  I will say that the device seems much more stable and snappy compared to the 2.2 device we reviewed.  Oh, and 2.3.3 will also unlock the ability to play Netflix.

Charge owners, you ready for some Gingy?

i only have 2.2.1 on my charge and i can use netflix so i don’t see why you’re saying 2.3.3 will unlock netflix.

  • PurpleComet

    I’ve been able to watch Netflix… since… ever…

i just set up lots of apps on my new Samsung Droid on the train from Hudson, NY/NYC
    16 programs
    and browsing for 2 hours
    heavy use
battery still 50% left; 3g only browsing while the programs downloaded
CDMA mode not LTE mode it is very nice though 4g hard to come by but that’s ok as I can imagine how fast it will drain the battery before i discern ALL THE TRICKS that help in that regard with this lovely phone.I wish it would automatically turn 4g off when using 3g but i can leave it on CDMA mode until i get to 4g areas**********************I was noticing that 250Meg of the 400 (?) RAM available is taken up.Does Android ALWAYS rely on the Application Killer apps yo end the programs one if going back and forth from?Seems weird to keep having to do that unlike iOS but i did not want to buy a CDMA Iphone4Lots to learn but OH what a nice (1st) smartphone I just hope the low RAM doesn’t hold it back but i will explore running the apps from the 32Gig card to see if that helps RAM now after all the installations and familiarizations, I must learn/look out for android 2.3 oh my!

Cooooooooooooomen on GB for the Charge!! Looks like those with the TBolt, should have chosen the Charge instead. I know people that are exchanging their TBolts. I’m happy I moved from the X to the Charge!

    • Anonymous

Hahaha…no way I’d trade my Bolt for that Charge…they both will get the G-Bread and it’ll be alll good :-)

Does it format the filesystem to EXT4?

    • Nitsuj17

no update thats meant to ota will EVER change filesystems…thats asking for a shitstorm of problems…u want ext4, root and flash a custom kernel with it..or buy another phone

  • Craigg

I’m looking forward to this update. There were a few negative reviews when this phone first came out but regardless of what some have said it’s the best phone that VZW currently offers. Properly rooted and debloated this phone performs well and is very responsive. Now add Gingerbread and Netflix support and you have a near perfect device. The only thing missing is Global support.

    • Mneighbo

      Agreed!!!!

    • Tomblewitt

luckily i have a feew GSM phones from TMobile lines that overseas one can stick a SIM in

the beauty and power of the Charge here in USA for school, business, fun etc. is amazing. I just have to learn Android battery apps that help versus load down RAM

OMG I’M SO EXCITED!! Can’t wait. I’ve had my Charge all of two weeks and hate that it’s on Froyo! Ready for GB!!

It’s still Touchwiz though, that app drawer would drive me nuts.

    • Rick

If this leak GB has Touchwiz 4.0, it supposed to be better than previous versions.

  • Thelegendofdavid

As a droid charge owner all i can say is Fu*k yeah!!!!

    • Coriolis

As a fellow charge owner I second that!

I think this should go to show that Samsung is able to fully support a phone and very well I might say. I am very happy with samsung right now, Hopefully the final release will include some 2.3.4 :)

    • http://twitter.com/lonndoggie Lonnie Brownell

      This isn’t Samsung’s doing, it’s a port by p3droid, for rooted users.

However, it does still have that butt-ugly orange color scheme, so I can see how  you might think it’s direct from Sammy.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LEP2PO6BC524BBC4K5CRPFOJFY josh

You sure? Id expect for a unofficial build from P3droid to be touchwiz free and mainly stock in nature.

        • http://twitter.com/lonndoggie Lonnie Brownell

Good points.  I think the “bugs to be fixed” thing argued for a built-from-source ROM, not a leaked ROM, so therein lies my confusion.

And, maybe it is that–Samsung leaked the source, p3 quickly built it and demoed it, and now has some bugs to fix (and maybe, we can hope, nuke that crappy color scheme–I consider that a bug!)

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LEP2PO6BC524BBC4K5CRPFOJFY josh

Yeah I think its more or less just bugs that occured from getting the leak rooted. I just hope samsungs final build is 2.3.4 thatll make me happier

      • http://www.facebook.com/chaoscentral John Pisano

p3droid does not make roms, this is a leaked build. end of story.

  • Mike

Quick! Let’s root it so Motorola can fix the exploit!

  • Stelv81

Is the kernel changed from rfs to ext4 with the Gingerbread update I wonder?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

      You mean filesystem I assume?

      • Stelv81

Yes the filesystem. Rfs on both the Fascinate and Charge as it is now cause some lag. Ext 4 is what all the other single core processors like the snapdragon use I believe

        • Nitsuj17

no update from a major carrier will ever change the filesystem on android device

  • Rick

Looking forward for some GB. I sent P3 a tweet to see if it comes with ext4 as Sammy promised.

    • Nitsuj17

where did samsung promise it was ext4, no other samsung gingerbread update for a galaxy s phone (or its cousins) has changed from rfs

  • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

    Why not 2.3.4?

    What is this dope song!

    • Nitsuj17

its a leak, they got what they got from whoever

  • http://profiles.google.com/atlbaird Evan Anderson

ill take it ….oh and first lol

  • )v(urphy

If this phone gets GB before my TBolt….there will be hell to pay HTC!

    • Kevlar

      Seriously!
