Verizon Announces New Batch of 4G LTE Markets for July 21 (Updated)

The coverage just keeps on growin’!  Today, Verizon announced a new batch of cities that will have the 4G LTE switch flipped on starting July 21.  This initial list of locations appears to be mostly east coast, but with LTE already live in Portland, OR and without an announcement from Big Red, we’re thinking this list could grow over the next couple of weeks.

New 4G LTE cities:

  • Springfield, MA
  • Huntsville, AL
  • Augusta, GA
  • Wichita, KS
  • Toledo, OH
  • Carbondale and Marion, IL
  • Chattanooga, TN
  • Charleston, WV
  • Knoxville, TN
  • Greensboro, NC
  • Winston Salem, NC
  • High Point, NC
  • Raleigh-Durham, NC
  • Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA
  • Portland, OR
  • Olympia, WA
  • Tacoma, WA
  • Honolulu, HI
  • Hilo, HI
  • Maui, HI
  • Lakeland, FL
  • Winterhaven, FL
  • Sarasota, FL
  • Bradenton, FL
  • Colorado Springs, CO
  • Ogden, UT

Expands coverage in:

  • Louisville, KY
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • San Diego, CA
  • Seattle, WA
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Northern New Jersey

Update:  We’re just going to keep adding to the list as Verizon announces them.  Keep it close!

Anyone noticing 4G yet in some of these new cities?  Wouldn’t be surprised if you are.

Cheers Tom and Jake!

  • when will Oceanside, CA get 4G? Aren’t we part of San Diego? it’s been over a year you would think the the third largest city in the San Diego area would get LTE before 2012 considering San Diego got it in 2010. Someone at Verizon needs to pay more attention to where they are upgrading. It seems like they are upgrading the boonies before the populated areas,

Big Red must have flipped the switch a little early in Greensboro, NC, because my Tbolt picked up 4G late Sat afternoon…been on it ever since

“Anyone noticing 4G yet in some of these new cities?”
Nope, still no LTE north of the Bay Area or Sacramento 🙁

  • Ryanwv24

In Charleston, WV there is 4g but the coverage is spotty at best.  I am in the map as being covered but am being told that I am closer to a 3g tower and that is why I dont get 4g at home.  If I go downtown it picks up great.

I noticed 4g service in Colorado Springs, CO way back at the end of May. It didnt work too well but my Thunderbolt changed from 3G to 4G LTE

  • I wish to express thanks to this writer for bailing me out of such a circumstance. Right after looking out throughout the the web and seeing thoughts which were not helpful, I thought my life was over. Living devoid of the approaches to the issues you’ve fixed by means of the post is a crucial case, as well as ones which could have badly affected my entire career if I had not noticed your blog. Your main training and kindness in maneuvering all areas was important. I don’t know what I would have done if I had not come across such a thing like this. I can at this point look forward to my future. Thank you so much for this specialized and amazing guide. I won’t hesitate to propose your web blog to any individual who desires tips about this problem.

Yesssssssssss and everyone complaining please just shut up already. Goto sprint if you have no patience

  • Dawhyte86

Don’t know who is from Buffalo but found out we will probably not be getting it for quite some time as Canada still uses analog signals for their TV broadcasts which the LTE would interfere with. I am assuming any city’s on the border of Canada will probably have the same issue

  • Timmah

  • Vidmar

why is verizon still boycotting Virginia???

  • Albany Ny is having 4G pop up yet it isnt on the list?

  • Mrgondek

No buffalo-ve? Every nfl city my foot. Maybe big red is preparing for the lockout too…

  • Anonymous

I doubt I’m gonna use the 4G on my ThunderBolt when I get coverage, don’t want to kill my battery.

  • Deejay

yeee Big Red showing Cali some love!

  • Barlog

Anyone in North County San Diego picking up anything? I’m in Escondido and haven’t gotten anything yet, bummer 🙁

    • Rccrod

I live in Oceanside, it’s probably not coming here till late 2011 early 2012… well that’s just a guess.

      • Looks like its going to be 2012. they still havent announce anything and its already December 14th. Shame on Verizon for building LTE in the back country and skipping a major city like Oceanside.

Uggh, still no Santa Rosa, Ukiah, Willits, Eureka, Redding, Red Bluff, Chico, Yuba City or Marysville in that list 🙁

    • Anonymous

Or Laytonville, Cloverdale, Lakeport, Clearlake, Hopland, Fort Bragg, Garberville, Crescent City, Yreka, Alturas, Williams…etc. etc.  Someday I guess.

  • OlyWA FTW!

  • Any clue why Virginia is TOTALLY getting ignored in the 4G market?? It’s almost like it isn’t allowed to be there!

    • BC Big Red can suck it

      -Pissed in RVA

  • Brandon Greenwood

I noticed 4g coverage in the Shrewsbury, MA area. Just outside of Worcester.

  • booyah triad…

  • Phil

Sweet!  Durham NC is finally getting some 4G love.

  • And i just moved from carbondale IL

  • this may be a dumb question, but i am going to ask it…how far away does 4g go. i.e they are putting it in mass, i live in nh, anyway id be part of that?

    • ive found it to be around 30 miles outside of the main metropolitan area/center…
-i live 25 miles outside of manhattan (have 4g)
-when i drive to and from charlotte, it usually cuts out around 30 miles out

  • David Hayden

Good to hear 4G is in Portland now. All I have to do now is wait for my upgrade, and be happy that I don’t have to worry about those pesky tiered plans.

  • Can we get some LTE here in San Bernadino County? Wheres the LTE love for what is the largest county in the 48 States? we have 1.7 million people and not a single LTE tower.

  • Anonymous

Finally, Louisville is getting some LTE lovin’. Now, hopefully they’ll expand to Lexington, KY considering I go to school there for most months out of the year. Now, I need my upgrade to come around.

    • Tyler

Yeah at home in Louisville it is FAST. I go to UK too, and all the towers in Lexington except 1 and all the towers down 64 to Lex are equipped with LTE panels…so it can’t be too far out.

      • Bob

They are saying November it should be up and running..by the end of the year at the latest!

        • Richard Evans

Heard the same thing from the Verizon reps in the Hamburg store today when I bought my Thunderbolt. Said the last they heard was November and that it is supposed to cover all the from Lexington to Louisville and from Lexington to Cincinnati.

  • nessa

wtf no san bernardino or rialto?

    • Anonymous

Too ghetto. 4g lte doesnt do ghetto areas

      • false…its coming to winston salem.  hahahaha

      • nessa

My area of rialtoeis far from ghetto

      • There’s coverage in North Long Beach that’s ghetto lol

        • Anonymous

True, Strong beach is pretty ghetto

    • No offense but you should be hoping for some proper 3G coverage in rialto, my mom lives there and I cant get a signal to save my live.

      • nessa

wow really? i get full bars here max download i got was 2.xx

  • Jj

Wow still no expanded coverage for NY I live about 20-30 mins north of NYC and still no 4G, LTE coverage stops once you get about 10 mins north of the city fuckn bs.

    • DBlue31

Well, 10 minutes north of the city is where civilization stops and you enter the boonies

  • Captain_ron80

What? It’s running in Portland, OR?!

  • Anonymous

    ‘Bout time for Toledo.

  • Cassmoney

Charleston gets 4g! Would be nice if i got some 3g

  • I’m still waiting for the 4G coverage I was supposed to get the 16th in Solano County in California

  • Jamerson90

Sweet. I’m finally getting LTE up here in Toledo

  • Anonymous

How many miles does LTE usually reach outside the cities with coverage? I live outside Knoxville, and would love to pick up a 4G phone soon.

  • Anonymous

I am just out side of Chattanooga, about 10 miles outside of downtown, I hope that I will be able to get some of the 4G love!!! I will let you know once I make it home tonight.

  • Tim242

I want to know what the holdup is in Little Rock, AR and Memphis, TN. They were both supposed to be live by June….now they’re not even on the July list???

  • Anonymous

    gee, no Virginia again. Awesome

    • Tyrian

      patience my friend. patience.

  • LTEased

So glad I’ll have LTE whenever I come visit my parents in Winston Salem.. It’s funny they turn it on after I move to nyc july 15th lol..

  • Anonymous

Cool, I knew Raleigh/Durham couldn’t be too far away, now I’m covered on both sides, yay. 4G is already at RDU but kinda spotty…

  • Sredman27

When is VA going to get some love.  I’m tired of you dancing around us, Big Red!

  • Gumbi

Wichita has one tower up and running, Verizon rep said the whole city should be covered within 60 days, but 30 days sounds even better

    • AC

What area of Wichita is seeing 4G?!?!?!

      • Gumbi

The tower that’s running is right by the Verizon store at Town West

  • Andy

I been having 4g in Portland for the past week or so. but it aint on the list.

  • Anonymous

Yay! Keep on expanding that Los Angeles footprint, Big Red. I want everywhere I could possibly go blanketed with your warm, wet, LTE goodness.

  • Anonymous

Rancho Cucamonga, very nice. Now give me a SGS2 with LTE and we are all set for some time 🙂

    • P!X3L

Don’t see any coverage in Rancho yet… It’s been live just past upland. Pretty much at the county line. Hoping we get some love in SB county. Rancho/Ont should be covered before any of these Podunk towns.

      • Anonymous

If you go to VZW’s website, this is what is says about expanding LA coverage:

Verizon Wireless is expanding the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term
Evolution (LTE) network in the Los Angeles and San Diego metro areas on
July 21.  In the Los Angeles area, 4G LTE will expand from Pomona to Ontario, north to Rancho Cucamonga and Fontana, and stretch south to Corona.

  • Anonymous

4G LTE has been in the Springfield, MA area for about a week now.

  • Guy

    And STILL no f’ing Virginia!!!

    • J. G.

Yeah none is VA, why is that? Is VA holding out for some big thing?

    • J. G.

Virgina is for lovers…..not 4G LTE.

      • Anonymous

It’s for bugs and muggy weather too 😀

  • C’Mon still no Sarasota/Bradenton Florida? Ughhh

    • Anonymous

They turned it on for a half hour or an hour last Friday in downtown Sarasota.  Hopefully that means it’s coming soon.

      • Ohh good to know. Maybe it’ll be here in August in time for the Bionic?

        • Anonymous

Disqus just alerted me to your response.  gg.

  • P!X3L

Finally. So excited about expanded LA coverage. Very frustrating to be 5 miles outside of coverage.

  • i hate life.
hasnt been a new tx site since november…

    • Smtxom

I know! I cant believe Austin hasnt had a tower up already. This is really starting to piss me off. We may not be silicon valley but we are a big tech city and a live music city (SXSW) so how could they not want to put 4g in this area

      • I’m actually offended that college station has LTE and not Austin.

      • Grzybows

We probably have too many users here in Austin area – look what happened to AT&T during SXSW.

  • Bleedtoledo

Flickers of 4g already appearing in the Glass City. Or, as I call it, “Detroit’s Toilet.”

    • Mr Josh Zombie

Yup, around 12am – 1am I’ve been getting full-speed LTE lately. It’s rather nice when it comes around.

      • Anonymous

sent this link to a buddy of mine who replied that he, too was getting 4g around 1am in Toledo.

  • Yesss. :3 Springfield, MA, finally. Even though I don’t live all too close to there, I did get a 4G signal for about a minute last week in my area, so I’m hoping that’s the location they were testing so I can get it. 😀

    • Anonymous

Where do you live?  Born raised and residing in Springfield.

  • michael scott will be pleased

  • Sb

Ugh, show KC, MO some love. My Revolution is dying for some 4G

    • neverknow

KC, MO will be way down the road if I had to place any money on it.  Sprint owns that city… AKA the Sprint Center, Sprint Headquarters, Etc.

  • James Murphy

Kansas is seriously getting LTE before New Jersey, Verizon? Do you feel good about yourself, Verizon?

    • Anonymous

Theres coverage from NYC and Newark airport. Not even close to enough though. Its pretty annoying being teased with it during some parts of my day and then going home or to work and its still 3g.

    • Forgeeking

what are you talking about? North Jersey has great LTE coverage, as well as parts of central jersey.  I live in New Brunswick and have LTE everywhere I go.  I know they don’t have LTE down the shore, and hopefully South Jersey gets more LTE, but we do have LTE here in the Garden State.

    • Yourissues

I was just in New Jersey and there is 4G EVERYWHERE! I don’t know where you are but as far as Central and North Jersey goes I never NOT had it.

      • MFG

I live in a town in North Jersey (Passaic County) with no 4G but when I get to work in Englewood Cliffs, I do have 4G. Actually, about 15 minutes from my town the 4G kicks in. I don’t know when we’ll be getting it though. So closeeee.

    • Some cities in NJ are actually against building new cell towers, that’s why the coverage is bad at times.
