App Of The Day: GhostTown

by: | posted 05.26.11 | Apps, Reviews

GhostTown is one of those apps that makes me say,”wow” pretty quickly. Within a few minutes of running this app, I started writing the review since I already knew it was going on the App Of The Day today. I’m one of the people that uses my phone as an mp3 player as well as a phone. I like music apps and have tried a lot of them. GhostTown does something that not many music apps do. For free. GhostTown lets you type in the name of any artist and play any song by that artist. There isn’t “you like this artist so try this artist” going on here. It’s straight forward. You can select any song you want, pause it, skip it, rewind it, repeat it, create playlists, and more. This literally is just like having, in the developer’s words, “an infinite playlist”. There is no limit to how many songs you play or how many times you skip songs. I’ll say it again. Any song. Any artist. No watered down lounge singer cover bands here. There are no monthly fees but a .99 cent in app purchase will remove ads. If you use your phone as a mobile jukebox, check this one out.

LG Revolution, Xperia PLAY and DROIDX2 All Available from Verizon Today

by: | posted 05.26.11 | News

If you were looking to invest in a new Android phone, then today wouldn’t be a bad day to head over to your nearest Verizon store.  The LG Revolution ($249), Sony Xperia PLAY ($199) and Motorola DROIDX2 ($199) are all available.  One of them run’s on their brand new 4G LTE network, another is a gaming machine, and the last is Big Red’s first dual-core phone.  We’ll be doing a bunch of coverage on both the Xperia PLAY and DROIDX2 starting today, so if you want to wait and see our thoughts on them, just hang out here.  The LG Revolution on the other hand has us torn – it’s basically the DROID Charge (our review), but without Google Search or that amazing Super AMOLED Plus screen.  Oh, they did toss in Netflix though.

Buy.

Anyone picking one up today?

Man Arrested For Fleeing The Scene After Being Tipped Off From His DROID Police Scanner App

by: | posted 05.25.11 | Apps, News

Imagine this. You’re the getaway driver in a pharmacy robbery, and you think you’re smart because you have an Android phone equipped with a Police Scanner application. Thinking you’re one step ahead of Johnny Law, you go for it. While listening for activity you hear police are on their way to haul you to jail, so you speed off before they arrive and leave your buddy at the scene of the crime. Only to be pulled over and arrested for attempted arm robbery and on top of that, a misdemanor for using a Police Scanner illegally.

That’s what happened to Matthew Hale. His bail is now set at $25,000 and is facing felony charges of attempted armed robbery. Matthew had an Original Droid with a Police Scanner application installed on his handset at the time of the criminal act. Not good because in his state of Indiana, it’s illegal to use a mobile police scanner without a license from the Federal Communications Commission (i.e., a ham license) or without permission from local law enforcement. It’s that way in at least 4 other states, and in most other states it’s still against the law to have a “mobile” scanner. There’s another story out of Kentucky where a gentleman had 3 police scanners installed on his phone and was charged just for having them installed, completely unrelated to the crime he was originally charged for.

These applications are fun from time to time, and allow boredom to be passed while listening to emergency services, but maybe it’s a good idea to now look up your local laws and see if you’re in violation. Especially if you’re going to be doing any law breaking – Which we do not condone. Head over to the MSNBC site and read the full story. It’s a crazy one.

SHADOWGUN Announced for Both Tegra 2 and Kal-El Processors, Might Be the Most Visually Impressive Mobile Game Ever

by: | posted 05.25.11 | Apps, Games, News

Madfinger Games, the same guys that brought us Samurai II, just announced their new project called SHADOWGUN which is one of the first titles to be made specifically for NVIDIA’s new Kal-El quad-core processor.  When you look up “console-quality” in a dictionary, the picture you are seeing above is now featured.  Everyone please attempt to pick your jaw up from off the floor.

The game is already being referenced as the “most advanced handheld game in the market” and will also have a version available for Tegra 2 devices.  It involves futuristic weaponry, a personal Android assistant, bounty hunters, cyborgs, mutants, and genetically-enhanced humanoids in the year 2350.  Do we even need to say more?  Oh, a date.  They are only announcing that game is in the works at this time, but hope to have it out some time in 2011.

Be sure to check out the press release and some additional screenshots of the game after the break.  This game looks amazing.

A fairly minor update was released today for Google Maps on Android.  You can see exactly what was changed in the screenshot above – looks like Latitude and new check features with some transit support tossed in.  More polish, which we love.

TweetCaster HD Beta for Honeycomb Released

by: | posted 05.25.11 | Apps, News

It may have taken almost 3 months, but we’re now starting to see the wave of Twitter apps built specifically for Honeycomb and big screened tablets hit the market.  TweetCaster HD is the latest and within just a few minutes of time with it, we’re liking the approach.  I’ll probably always be a big fan of column-styled Twitter apps because I’m obsessive compulsive and need to see massive amounts of tweets all at once, but Tweetcaster HD seems to have found a nice balance between both a beautiful and user friendly UI that goes completely away from the rest of the pack.   I’m really enjoying the buttons that allow you to filter tweets with photos, videos or links out separately.  Seriously, great job by the folks at Handmark.

DROIDX Gingerbread Update Available for Manual Download June 1

by: | posted 05.25.11 | Breaking, News

Word spread this morning that the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update for the DROIDX would become available to some starting May 27 (this Friday), but according to a VZW employee at their community forums, the availability of the manual “pull” update for those not prompted, won’t go live until the following week on June 1.  Feel free to start checking your phone on Friday through next Wednesday though, (Settings>About>System Updates) as you may be one of the lucky few who gets it early.

Cheers Rick!
