Viber Releases Beta VoIP App on Android, Download it Now

At the beginning of May, Viber invited all of our readers to sign up to be notified when the beta version of their free VoIP calling and texting app would be ready – yesterday, invites went out.  We have a link to the file below, but if for some reason it isn’t compatible with your device, you’ll want to fill out their form where you can specify a phone.  It definitely seems a little picky.

Download:  Viber.apk

Install just as you would any other 3rd party app.  Free calls to other Viber users over 3G and WiFi.

*Tip – If you can’t get it to work with your normal phone number, I had luck using my Google Voice number on my Nexus S.

Cheers Chris, nativi, and Wade!

Is anybody else having trouble registering?

    • Jayrox+droidlife

the website specifically says you cannot register until you gained beta

Previous to this posting by kellex I had received an email saying that I was invited to be a beta tester.  I cant find the problem and their tech support has not contacted me and I doubt they will (sorta a glass half empty point of view.)

        • http://www.viber.com Viber

          What exactly is the problem?

Please elaborate and we will try to help.

Anyhow, let me explain how our invitation mechanism goes:
          * Register for the beta (if you haven’t done so already) – viber.com/android.* Wait for an invite email * Register your email/phone online* Get the Viber Android app and install* Activate with the number you registered.
Note that we invite a few thousands of subscribers a day, and we currently have several tens of thousands. If you get the APK without following this procedure, you will NOT be able to activate.

    Viber???

Sounds like a competitor to Dildroid

I’m not too sure what the benefit of this application is but I might give it a try. I have been using SipDroid for about a year. While it’s not perfect it does work most of the time. Outgoing calls are usually error free with SipDroid; however incoming calls can be a problem as it seems that the voip server tends to lose connection at times over 3G. It would be great to find a 99.99% reliable voip client. I tend to use it most offshore as I can make and receive calls for about 1 penny a minute over 3G or WiFi.

This app is dead in the water. Look at Groove IP if you want a truly powerful VOIP app. Groove lets you call ANY number over ANY connection through Google Talk for free! And it comes through as your own Google Voice Phone number.

What is the advantage of Groove versus using the Google talk app for Android? It would be nice if Groove offered a free trial period to test it.

I like GrooVe IP, but it doesn’t work well for me. My voice is always choppy and full of static. Works great for some people, though.

Fring seems to work well for me, but I have yet to try using it for phone calls (only Fring to Fring and video chat). I’ll try it this week and see.

Skype continually drags their feet and doesnt release an app for video calls for Android yet. Plus with Microsoft buying them out, any hopes of seeing it are now most likely non existent.

This just in man fired for having leud phone app. Man is suing ex-employer stating “it’s for Voiping”. Ex-employer responds: “I don’t care where what you kids call it nowadays, you are still fired”. Click here for more.

What’s the advantages of this one over Skype I wonder?

“Free calls to OTHER VIBER USERS over 3G and WiFi.”
So I can call 3 people that I don’t even know for free?  Move along…nothing to see here.

    • John

It’s just the start of what will be huge. You’ll see..
