Motorola Prepares “Project” for DROIDX, We’re Thinking Gingerbread

Our inbox just blew up with the email below, which we’re going to assume means that Gingerbread (Android 2.3) for the DROIDX is finally on the way.  We’ve known for weeks that the build has been finalized, so for Motorola to begin testing it with a select group of forums members is not surprising.

Dear Motorola Owners’ Forums member,

We are preparing a project for Droid X owners and would like to invite you to take part. We are now opening the project for registration.

Please click this link to take a short enrollment survey if you are interested. Please note that this is a confidential project under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this project on any public sites.

At this time, there are few details to share, but if you register we’ll provide more information. If you have any questions, please e-mail me here.

Thanks again, and we hope to be in contact with you soon.

I should also point out that one of the links that testers are being directed to definitely says, “Droid X May 2011 update soak” which we’re hoping means that GB will be here before the end of the month.  A few signs have already hinted at 5/26 as being a possibility.

Everyone ready for some official 2.3 action?

Cheers R, M, J, J, and M!

Really tired of hearing about gingerbread when there isn’t any love for D2

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Bright/100000693281757 Nick Bright

Can I just say no one mentioned to me not to update directly to the .595 version from Froyo? I bricked my phone and had to re-image via Bootloader. That was a dreadful experience – total time to research and fix phone = 12 hours.

No one mentioned to go to the .588 base first – that was crap.
    Anyway, can’t wait. :P

    • Rlorenz

Wow, 12 hours? Sounds like torture. What happened to that poor phone? Why wouldn’t a simple SBF fix your problem?

Got the email invite but am liking how my leaked version of GB is running. Not worth flashing back to Froyo for this. Besides I’ve got netflix streaming working, what have they got??

Stock Gingerbread, or bust. I’m not putting up with Motorola’s crapware anymore. The Droid X is my first and last Moto phone.

  • Themrjustinjones

I didn’t think I would be hating on my big brother, but I should of gotten the X.. the D2 sucks. Hey lets give the x2 Froyo and the x GB because we keeps it real. Real sad.

  • bigred4x15

Any word on Droid 2 update?

  • Buckgrad

OK, I need some help if anyone would be kind enough to provide their input before I totally screw up my phone (forgive my lack of knowledge).

I received this notice this morning and registered.  BUT, I am running on the GB 4.5.573 version, and want to get back to stock froyo for the ota.

I tried using SBF Portable, following the instructions, and downloaded the program to my PC. When I tried to put the phone in bootloader mode to continue the process, all that happened was that the phone turned on and went into “safe mode” (lower left side of screen).  I figured that I needed to root again, but I can no longer find ez4root in the market or on the web.

I just did a factory reset on the phone.  Can anyone help?  Many thanks.

    • Anonymous

i believe the procedure for opening boot loader is :
-While phone is NOT plugged into computer and POWERED OFF
      - Hold Volume Down, camera and then power button for 2-3 seconds, let go of all
      - bootloader should open
      - plug into computer

Let me know if it works

      • Buckgrad

Thanks. Was doing power button, menu and camera.  Will try as soon as phone stops reinstalling my apps from the reset.  I’ll let you know.

      • Buckgrad

That worked, but the easy double click and done SBFPortable  isn’t so easy…would someone who is experienced with this program please help me?  it says it can’t copy the file kqumu.sys to the destination directory.  If it won’t work, will someone tell me how to safely get my phone out of bootloader mode?  Please?

        • Anonymous

sorry i dont use SBF portable, i use RSD to SBF. Try poking around on MyDroidWorld.com thats where I get most of my droid DIY when i cant find it here.

Hell yeah! Have been looking forward to an official Gingerbread build in what seems like forever! Or like a week after I upgraded my Droid X to Froyo. Actually, I take that back…as soon as Gingerbread was announced. Yes, that’s the ticket!

But sadly, I may not upgrade to Gingerbread for awhile now..now that I’m enjoying full Netflix on my Droid X! Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

(By the way, I think Popcap will be releasing Plants vs. Zombies for Android for free this week as they said “near end of month”, so really looking forward to that game!)

Too bad this “project” isn’t a Xoom-style bootloader. DO WANT

Sign up for the Motorola Owner’s Forum and find the thread about signing up for the Motorola Feedback Network to be on a list to possibly get emails like this. This is my second one :) its probably too late for you to get in on this particular one but its a good list to be on anyway :P

So what part of “Do not post any details or information about this project on any public sites” do you not really understand?

  • http://twitter.com/Scores87 Ed

anyone notice droid 2 isn’t on the droiddoes site anymore?

    • Anonymous

Rumors around the web are saying that the Droid 3 is scheduled to launch next month. This could be why you do not see it there. Just a thought.

      • hkklife

When do all of the O.G. Droid 1 contract become eligible for early renewal?  July, right?  (That’s assuming 20 months into a 24-month contract if it was signed when the Droid 1 launched in Nov 2009).

I would assume the D3 would launch on or around that time frame (HEAVILY subsidized & backed by a huge marketing push to snare everyone a new contract).  I also bet that VZW will kick off their tiered data plans shortly before that so that all of these people flocking to the D3 will have to give up their grandfathered unlimited plans.   It’ll be the first “real” Droid worth having since the OG (vanilla Gingerbread, FF cam, great keyboard, 4″ qHD screen, dual-core) but the rub will be mandatory tiered data.

VZW & Moto keep punishing us over and over for being loyal!

  • LivinTilDeath

Why in the world would anyone think or want to take the official VZW update. specially if you want root seeing as 2.3.3 on the new google source can not be rooted anymore with any known root processes.

To further add why do we have to be there beta testers. this it total hogwash these days expecting the consumer to test there shit. they pay people do do this crap and I’m suppose to get stuck with some crap ass build on my device I can’t do anything with if there is an issue with it, F them.

    • Nxus1ne

first off, they don’t force anyone to soak the update, you have to sign up in order to get it. second, they most certainly support the update and fix issues with it, that’s the purpose of a limited release.  third, it’s very common for software companies to do limited releases to make sure there are no issues before sending it out to the masses.

get off your high horse and come out of your mother’s basement, dude.

I don’t want the official update, but I want it to be released soon so the developers can root it and rom it  :)

    • Official_GB_DX

Maybe not everyone roots their phone.  Maybe some enjoy what is there, and don’t have plans for rooting or updating?  If you do, and don’t want to take part in the “Project”, then that is fine.  You shouldn’t have any thing, good or bad, to say regarding this “Project” since it will not have any effect on you.

  • Bigheadman72

all we can do is wait on GB.

    • Anonymous

This will be Gingerbread I guarantee it. They did the same with Froyo and I was in the test group for that too. I will be glad to be part of this one too :)

  • Booboolala2000

Got the same email. Signed up for that program a while ago. No more dx but wishing you guys luck. More releases of gingerbread speed up competition for other phones to be updated. Bring the pressure moto.

  • http://twitter.com/djstarion Francisco Rodriguez

Perfect timing, I just traded my D2 for a DX

  • Mark

A friend with a Droid X just told me that a recent system update is now preventing him from using his 3rd party batteries!  He gets a nasty message when trying to charge them that “only Motorola batteries can be used/charged” in his phone.  He’s had these batteries for a long time without incident.  Dirty play, Motorola!

    • urdaddi

Only Motorola batteries are supported by Motorola.  And the reason is because Motorola has control over the quality of Motorola batteries.   Those Motorola batteries are designed to work in Motorola devices, and are tested for them.   The have electronc sensors that work with the Motorola batteries.  3rd party batteries can be from anywhere and NOT neccessarily the same quality.

      • IvankaHumpHew

You can use aftermarket batteries in your X if they meet certain requirements-have voltage and temp sensors. Most crap batteries from ebay don’t, and these could ruin your phone or blow up if overcharged or a short happens. it’s a safety precaution.

    • IvankaHumpHew

Dude, you posted this crap on Moto’s site, now you are doing it here? You are wrong! It’s not some udpdate, it’s Froyo and it’s the same on all Froyo devices. Go back on the meds.

I received the same email this morning. Sucks that my DX went totally belly up yesterday and my replacement won’t arrive until Tuesday. :(

  • R-Rated

The “ever present when it’s only good for M”  Matt. I see it nothing more than a dangling of the treat infront of the dog at this point. “He” will be out for whatever reason when all the folks hit up the message board on M’s owner support forum. History will repeat itself.

I will bet there will be coding so that anyone that accepts the download will not be able to flash back.

Anyhow, someone over there at M must be colorblind. Navy blue and black do not mix well on the eyes. Then throw in the power consuming grays so that menus appear half-arsed on the screen. No thanks Matt . . .I will wait for one of the ROM developers like Liberty to polish up and make the OS look professional vs. elementary school art class . . .

I give M a 9 for hardware and 2 for being able to get there “stuff” together even when they do release something.

    • Madcow06

“power consuming grays” you do know that on lcds it does not make any difference on what color is displayed pertaining to power consumption right? You must be thinking of amoled.

      • R-Rated

Nope. I am referring to the fact that lighter colors (gray) uses more power than black regardless of screen (LCD, AMLOED, even CRT). I know that the LCD still uses power even when displaying black, but when it displays black is not the same as the screen displaying all gray or other lighter color.

Most of the applications use black backgrounds in menus etc.. I noticed where the application leaves off on the screen there is the cheesy looking gray from M filling out the rest.

The X was built with a black case and was code named Shadow, not Overcast.

Maybe someone can Frankenstien a kiskarse android phone where most of us will not want to reskin or ROM as soon as we get it out of the box?

        • R-Rated

The first paragraph is where I am pulling my information from

          http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3-highlights.html

Nothing there about using lighter colored backgrounds.

          • Binglut9

Omg who cares you are a loser wow

          • Madcow06

That paragraph says noting about saving power across all types of screens, gingerbread launched on the nexus s which has an amoled display so yes the darker theme will save power for that phone but not for phones with lcds. Do some research and you can confirm this.

        • Anonymous

No, LCD’s always consume the same power no matter the image displayed.  LCDs use a backlight that is always on, the LCD itself acts as a shutter allowing light to filter through the RGB subpixels.  All black uses the same power as all white or any other combination of colors.

  • Anonymous

Gingerbread should have been out months ago for the DX. And this sure sounds like a beta test. Isn’t most of Verizon updates just a big beta test. (fascinate 911 not working)

    • Binglut9

Months ago? How many phones are even running official gb? One phone and that’s a google phoone. I think getting gb out to us is pretty good always before the other manufacturers.

  • Rocktoonz

Does anyone know if HTC has some kind of testing like this I could volunteer for, and if so how to sign up for it?

    • kurttrail

Verizon had to approve the software before Motorola’s soak, so this is more about keeping the fanboys in Motorola’s forum happy, than an actual testing program.

    • kurttrail

      • Madcow06

Its more about sending it to a small group of people first to make sure there is no major problems. Why not send it to a group of volunteers first who are active in their forums?

        • kurttrail

LOL! Verizon wouldn’t have approved it’s release as a soak, if there were any MAJOR problems. This is the OTA, and all this is is a way to give non-rooted Motorola fanboys something to cream over.

          • Binglut9

Sucks to be an HTC fanboy don’t get any cream

          • kurttrail

No. It just fanboys of any kind that do the sucking.

          • Madcow06

The soak you are referring to is after the test group, if you went past this email it describes this. The update goes out to a small group of people with a small percentage of those being people in the motorola feedback network. So no they don’t do it “apease non rooted fan boys” it’s to receive feedback afterwards so please comment on things you know about.

          • kurttrail

Any feedback they get won’t make it in this upcoming OTA. Just look how Motorola hyped that the soak OS only going to a selected few. Hype. Nothing more.

          • R-Rated

I agree with Kurttrail. The last Soak Test was only a few days from the mass release when 2.2 was being done. A few days is not enough time to allow for problems to be tweaked unless there is a pretty large team at M scrambling to rewrite the code vs. just lonely little Matt.

Essentially, the Soak is a veiled attempt to give all those folks that believe the M owner forum is really a full support forum when it is not. I have read times where Matt tells folks that non-M approved methods of fixing things will not be allowed to be posted. Does not seem to supportive does it?

          • Madcow06

They could receive useful feedback on the update process itself, also yes if there was a major problem it would make it into the final update because they would be forced to delay it. How exactly did Motorola hype this by sending an email to someone in the feedback network. If anything droid-life and whoever sent in the email is hyping it and so are you for trying to make up non sense about it.

It had better be less buggy than the GB leaks that have been out recently for the DX.  I had to reboot my phone because I couldn’t take a phone call after having the phone on for a day.  It would just hang up as soon as I hit answer. (Or dial, when going outbound).

The text messaging app was laggy and slow – it didn’t get all the test txts that I sent it. The overall experience was laggy to be honest.

    • Lakerzz

Thats weird. Mine has been running great…at least everything besides the notification led, but that’s it.

      • http://twitter.com/STEV3TS Steven D

I have all the GB leaks and mine are abit laggy and notification LED works when it wants to. thinking about flashing back to froyo and waiting

        • Lakerzz

It might have to do with me being rooted and using droid x overclock, idk…
