One Lucky DROIDX Owner Receives Official Gingerbread Early, May 26 Shows Up in Build Number

We just got done talking about the official update for the DROIDX being pushed back a little so that Verizon can release the DROIDX2 first, and then these photos hit our inbox.  You are looking at a “test” phone that one of our readers owns which was hit this morning with an update notification.  That update as you may have guessed, was for official Gingerbread (system 4.5.596) which he gladly accepted.

The interesting thing here, is that the build number (which he’s asked that we partially blur) shows a date of 5-26 in it.  What’s significant about May 26, you ask?  Well, that’s the day we expect the DROIDX2 to launch.  Are we looking at a massive Gingerbread treat on May 26 that will involve the original DX, DX2 and Xperia Play?  It’s tough to say for sure, but it looks like you all have a new date to mark on your calendars.

Note:  Now that I’ve had a minute to sit on this, I’ve realized that the .595 leak says 5-25 in its build number, so let’s not get too excited about May 26.  That’s more than likely just a strange coincidence – we do love a good coincidence though.

On more shot below.

Note 2:  Since many of you have asked how Airplane mode and WiFi at the same time can happen, I thought I’d give you a screenshot from my DX to show you that it is indeed possible.  I’ve also verified with at 2 people that this is indeed real.

Cheers CharlieX!

… i’ve done that on my OG droid for as long as I can remember… and it’s still on froyo… I’d show you a screen shot but my digitizer died above the menu button so it’s getting repaired(got stuck with a piece of crap lg cosmos touch… ugh the thing is soo small how do people even use feature phones????

  • digiK

Sounds like the person with the test phone is a VZW employee and doesn’t want to catch heat for leaking a limited rollout of the official OTA, thus obscuring the build to protect their anonymity.Toobad, since that stuff is easily edited to protect secret ninjas…

what’s odd is that it has still has the 2.6.32.9-g34b306dqpd748@il93lnxdroid09 #1 kernal when the new kernal in the builds is 2.6.32.9-g34b306dqpd748@il93lnxdroid09 #2 ….idk just thought that was wierd

    • digiK

They reverted to #1 in the .595 so that’s not the fishy part.

ok this may have been answered, but if i flashed the (non-root) gingerbread running4.5.588.MB10 will i get the official OTA or will i have to go back to froyo??? Just wondering.

    • Boblank84

you will have to go back to froyo

      • Anonymous

dang! Glad i saved that maderstock file to go back to 2.2.1

        • Ozzzmosis

          how do you do that?

  • Deltagamer

Why is his update in the marketplace? THAT seems fishy to me. I call hoax. And will not be holding my breath.

    • Skeetch79

Because maybe he was looking through the market when the notification popped up?! wow…

  • Ajay

May 10th, may 13th, may 26th. My guess? November 11th.

    • Exnin

well, i think we are all dead on the 21st…but If not…Gingerbread on DX1 will be out as soon as Duke Nukem Forever is…….LAME

      • Bullet4004

The North America release date or International?   Because International gets it first.  June 10.  LOL

  • richard gurska

Is it true what i read somewhere else, that if I’m running 4.5.588, I won’t be able to load the gingerbread update unless I first downgrade to stock Froyo?

    • Rain_king46

      Thats the word, yes

What’s up with people randomly getting these updates early?  How does that even happen?

I used Airplane mode and had WiFi enabled last year when my phone was offline. This was a Droid (1) with Froyo and 2.1.

You can do it on a D2G as well.

Ummm… something is fishy with this. Dev units do not and will not update via OTA like a consumer unit does. I own multiple Moto dev units and it doens’t work that way. So either this person is a tester and doesn’t have a dev unit or something else is up .

If this is true, it just torques me off even more.  It shows that Verizon does indeed have the software completed, but are intentionally holding back.  Why?  Probably for marketing reasons:  so they can say their latest and greatest “is the first Verizon phone to have Gingerbread!”.  Regardless, it stinks to high heaven.

i think verizon qualifies for the “shit or get off the pot” award.

  • Mwhipple3

if we are running the first leaked version you posted here a while back are we going to have trouble updating to the official version when it comes out?

Strange, a few days ago I saw a canceled DL for Moto-blur in my notification bar….I was so hopeful!

Why didn’t he pull the file for all us?

Why does it show a wifi signal BUT has the airplane icon also?

Damn disqus got my work twitter and not my personal one.

      • Brent Friedeman

huh weird!  I didn’t think it was possible.  Thanks for the reply though!  Great website!

        • http://www.twitter.com/slinky317 slinky317

You can do that on all Android phones, and it works well when you’re overseas with a non-world phone, so that way your phone can still access WiFi but won’t kill the battery by looking for a CDMA signal.

          • Anonymous

Yeah I find it weird that it seems that so many ppl here didnt know that… Thought it was common knowledge for Android users. I’ve used it since when I got my OG Droid. I used it on my G1 also I think. Just flip the wifi back on after going into airplane mode. I use it a lot in foreign airports and while traveling. Saves on battery till you need to roam internationally to make a call.

    • digsoreos

It took Motorola a while to fix the typo of “Text messsaging” in Froyo so typos don’t necessarily invalidate this release.

  • Trophynuts

wow you guys are really impatient aren’t you lol calm down people. Chances are there isn’t much difference between .595 and .596. Did someone really ask if .596 can be rooted when as we know now only one person in the World got this update as it currently stands.

    • Goatweed

I asked, only because I thought I read somewhere that someone was working on rooting it. My bad. I tried to load one of the leaks on my DX but it didn’t work – so I’m looking forward to sbf back to .340 so I can get this but I don;t want to lose root.

      • Trophynuts

ahh ok. Which leak did you try and load? I have been running GB leaks since they started with .573 and i haven’t had any problems. Android Forums is a great place for help if you need it. go to the DX All things Root section and start reading or asking questions.

        • Goatweed

same build, 573. I was running an old Froy build, then I sbf’d back to 340 and tried to load the GB leak. I think I screwed up because I used the Droid X boostrap, not the Droid 2 bootstrap because I got stuck in a recovery mode loop. Somehow I was able to reload sbf .340 and I just left it there. Then I rooted it again, of course :)

I was going to grab the D2 bootstrap and try it again but having felt like I almost bricked the phone, I didn’t want to risk it. Now since the official build is so close I can just wait.

          • Trophynuts

you can’t  brick the DX. That is what the SBF process is for. When a leak first comes out the first thing P3 and TBH do is make sure by going to the leak you can still SBF to a prior version. Go for it.

      • Trophynuts

  • Skeetch79

Seriously, hopefully he was rooted and pulled the ZIP (sending as a care package to P3Droid). The .595 leak shows a build number ending in 5-25…month/day or a form of sequential numbering for the builds?

  • Toky_neg

was he running .340 or the leaked .595??

    • Anonymous

       Picture looks like stock Froyo.

  • Goatweed

    can 596 be rooted?

  • Interstellarmind

why did he want to partially blur the build number?

Same baseband as .595 leak, different kernel, wonder if that’s specific to the dev phone… or if not, what kind of difference the different kernel will make. hmm.

He wasn’t nice enough to get it to us?
