Download: Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4) for the HTC Thunderbolt

The leaked Gingerbread test build for the HTC Thunderbolt has already been zipped up and is ready for rooted users to flash.  We’re hearing that the camera may be busted, but the rest of it should all work.  It’ll upgrade you to Android 2.3.4 which is fun and all, but for the first time that I can recall on an HTC device, will upgrade the version of Sense to 2.1.  All credit to @TeamAndIRC!

Instructions:

  • Download both the ROM (0ba18ca101a0295df37bba36b562d210)and the radio (52dd83aa40e30186c9fbefafd1bab534).
  • Rename PG05IMG_gingerradio.zip to PG05IMG.zip and drop it onto the root of your SD Card.
  • Put mecha_gingerjane.zip onto the root of your SD Card
  • Boot into recovery
  • Do a Nandroid Backup!
  • Perform a factory reset
  • Flash mecha_gingerjane.zip, DO NOT REBOOT
  • Using ADB, reboot to bootloader
    • adb shell
    • reboot bootloader
  • If in fastboot mode, switch to bootloader mode and allow the updated radios to flash.
  • Enjoy!

*Note:  If the zip you downloaded from above is version 1.2, you’ll also have to flash this file to fix activation.

*Note 2:  There is a good chance that your camera will not work after flashing this.

Continued support and fixes can be found at this XDA thread.

I also need to know how to root the tbolt — since I’ve gotten the recent VZW OTA update that was covered here on D-L, it seems that I’m now on a firmware version that is too high for the known, previously-documented rooting methods for the tbolt.

Help?  Just point me in the right direction — not looking for hand-holding.

    And thanks in advance…. !!

I would like to express thanks to you just for bailing me out of this type of incident. As a result of surfing around through the the net and finding things which are not helpful, I assumed my entire life was gone. Living without the presence of approaches to the issues you have resolved by way of your good article content is a crucial case, as well as those that could have adversely affected my career if I hadn’t noticed your site. Your good capability and kindness in maneuvering all the pieces was helpful. I’m not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come upon such a thing like this. I can at this moment relish my future. Thanks so much for this high quality and result oriented guide. I will not be reluctant to recommend the sites to anyone who ought to have support about this subject matter.

I’ve tried both “easy-root” methods offered by Droid-Life (ie. XDA) to no avail.

Eh, I’ll wait for the official build to come out OTA. If this was Vanilla Gingerbread that would be a different story. Mmmm I’d be a fat runaway Chris Farley for that!

Passing until BAMF comes out with it.

man, i want to put this on my device, but im not rooted! plus not having a camera kinda blows… anyway that this will be able to be loaded onto non rooted device?

  • Jeremy Gentry

why the hell do you have to flash a rom AND a radio? not btw, anyway to do this without ADB i don’t use it :(

    • Jeremy Gentry

also the only reason i would do this is to see if netflix would work since it has been working on gingerbread devices, anyone try it yet?

      • Noble Four

You have to flash a new radio because 2.3 requires a specific Gingerbread Sense radio, or else it doesn’t work. To do it without ADB, after you flash the ROM you can do a battery pull and then boot into the bootloader with Power+Volume down, where you flash the new radio.

To my knowledge, Netflix isn’t working yet. People are reporting they get full audio playback, but just a white screen. I am sure it will get worked out.

        • Jeremy Gentry

thank you very much for the response! much appreciated! :) exactly what i needed to hear

I’m gonna wait until some custom ROMs are cooked up.  It ran OK for me (other than the camera issues), but was getting very low Quadrant scores (1100).  Not sure what’s causing that… for me (other than the camera issues), but was getting very low Quadrant scores (1100).  Not sure what’s causing that…

      And you call that great??

      • Unseengalaxies

Basically, as long as “everything works”, in that sense, then it’s a-ok with me. If not, then I’ll wait for the official on June 30th to come out of Android 2.3.4 for T-Bolt. :D
