HTC Thunderbolt Update is Ready: Enhances 3G Connectivity, Fixes SMS Bugs, and Speeds Up GPS Load

We were wondering when Verizon was going to ready this update for the HTC Thunderbolt as it has been in the works and talked about behind the scenes for weeks now.  The update is 22.28MB and will enhance connectivity to Big Red’s 3G network and also help load times for GPS updates on Google Maps.  There are some other minor bug fixes in there for SMS and such, but the connectivity is huge.

After the update, you will be on version 1.13.605.7 and your baseband will remain the same.

Web Browsing and Data Access
+ Enhanced data connectivity when accessing the Verizon 3G network.

Email and Messaging
+ SMS and MMS messages are stored properly in the MessagingApplication (Inbox, Sent, etc.).

Additional Device Features
+ Timing for device activation has been improved.
+ “Backup Assistant” is correctly displayed in the Application menu.
+ Stability improvements for data centric applications such as Facebook, KAYAK, Yahoo! Mail, My Verizon and more.
+ Accurate location is displayed when accessing the Weather Widget.
+ Quickly load GPS updates for Google Maps and VZ Navigator™.

More info.

Cheers everyone!

Is there a way to get the update immediately or do you have to wait for the notification? i checked for new software updates but it says there are none.

  • http://profiles.google.com/b.peltz27 Benjamin Peltier

Can anybody tell me if this update is the same as the RUU on this thread? http://www.droid-life.com/2011/04/19/new-ruu-leaks-for-htc-thunderbolt-fixes-gps-audio-recording-and-lte-hand-off/ Is there any reason I should download that RUU, or will this update do the same? I would like to avoid the RUU update in that linked thread due to the fact that it will wipe my phone, but if it will make my phone better then I will do it.

*Note: I am a new Android user, and my Thunderbolt is not rooted. Thank you very much for any help for a newbie :)

    • Maxxmentum

Hi, that link is for a rooted phone. It is the fixes coming down the line in the VZ update, but probably not as polished. Yes it does wipe the phone and I not even sure it will work if you are not rooted. I have read that the VZ patch will be here tomorrow. Hope that helps.

      • http://profiles.google.com/b.peltz27 Benjamin Peltier

Thank you, that does help! There is an update with a download for non-rooted users in that link, though. But if it’s essentially all the same fixes, I’ll just wait for the VZW update. I just wasn’t sure if they were the same because that RUU leak said it fixes Audio Recording, Video Playback, and Proximity Sensor battery drain, which this VZW update doesn’t claim to fix.

  • Pauly814

Is it possible to do this update manually?..before you are notified by the phone? When I do a check new under updates it says no new updates.

  • Mgangale62

To funny,,this is a 4g phone and they fix the 3g,,,i live in vegas and verizon map says i live in a 4g area yet no 4g(((and yes i have contacted verizon many times to no avail))),,,how about a fix for that??????????also the battery has been the biggest issue since,,,well before the phone even launched yet no fix for that.Other than that everything listed on this update is nice but secondary to those two i listed IMO.But who cares??obviously verizon and htc dont.

Is there anyway to uninstall the leaked rom update to install this one?

  • Sjcali566

This update hasn’t showed up on my phone yet. Just got off the phone with Verizon and they didn’t show an update for my phone and I have a Thunderbolt.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Armstrong/683295690 William Armstrong

i was told by a htc rep that a battery update was on the way also. supposedly they are developing a better interaction between the 4g radio and battery. it suppose to help mitigate the ridiculous battery drain

  • Magman117

Mine says no update available and no the phone isn’t running version 1.13.605.7

Verizon put it on my thunderbolt it helped some

  • Mar

Have anyone receive the ota update yet

  • Meh

    Where’s my Gingerbread?

  • http://twitter.com/dfitz52 Dan Fitzgerald

unfortunately this update hasn’t fixed my connectivity issues, my phone will drop connection and struggles sometimes to get connectivity at all. I think it’s because I’m on the edge of a 4G zone when at home but you’d think it would pick up the 3G no problem since my DX and OG had no issues getting full 3G…if the 4G wasn’t so nice and I didn’t get good service at work, this phone would have gone back…

    • MOTOX

If you’re on the edge of a 4g zone, its probably because the phone itself can’t decide what to go onto….3g or 4g…this should help others like me where getting any data is a problem, connecting, recconecting etc…i really need this update….my phone hasn’t restarted….just turns off…so…i hope this comes out soon.

  • Porno

The latest DAS BAMF ROM available on XDA uses this RUU and is the ONLY ROM you should be running at this point on your TBolt.

  • Anonymous

Nice to see the 3G fix, I live in a 4G market, but when I went out of town my Thunderbolt went from LTE straight to edge and I almost never saw 3G.

  • palomosan

What happens when you already have that radio at that version from the leak RUU.

  • Mariobros27772

I installed that leaked update a while back… Is this exactly the same as that update? Is there anyway to uninstall that update to install this one?

    • Anonymous

Yeah, its the same exact thing. The post even says that.

  • Spencer9663

Hm who actually has this update so far?

      • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

  • idontlikemakinguserids

how do you get this update? went to software update and then check new and said there was nothing available????

    • Anonymous

They get pushed out over the air in batches…

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

yea, the check new doesn’t actually pull it. it’s just there to pull it if you declined it in the past

      • Jboogie1289

So how else can you get it?

        • Anonymous

Wait for the message to update to pop up on you’re screen. Or you can wait until someone makes a manual update for it.

        • Porno

Download it from XDA. It has been there for over a week. DAS BAMF!

        • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

it’s sent to the phones in batches. you’ll get a popup message, and if you decline, thats when the check new will work. it’s still ok to check every now and then, just in case you accidentally declined it or if your got the notice but didn’t update.

          • Katrayher

            Thank you!

how did you do it, my battery has craped out on me i can last maybe 4 hours, and i have everything as low i can. i had to to rely on juice defender to get me through a day

        • Gthegamedude

I can do same. But i tried the htc widget 4 turning on/off the mobile network. Calls and texts still work. Im now on 1 day 10 hours since my last charge. Turn on internet to use, turn off when done just like gps or wi-fi.

        • MrSmith

If your joined Android, and read droid-life definitely spend some time on the XDA-Developers forums and learn about Android. The beauty of Android, especially if your a nerd is it’s ability to be tweaked. It may not come stock and dumbed down for anyones use like an iphone (which isnt necesarily bad), but it can be tweaked to be a ridiculously great workhorse. Specifically for that battery life it’s just rooted, de-bloated, using Andrenalyn’s (dev on xda-devlopers forum) 4.3A kernel

        • Anonymous

If you turn the tunda bow off, it lasts for days.

If it updates it into a Galaxy S II, I’ll bite. Otherwise, you can keep it.

    • Anonymous

Well I think your in luck there little buddy. It does just that, golly gee.

    • Jboogie1289

Not sure what kind of step that is? Up or down? Thought Samsung’s were not of favor? Just saying……

      • Anonymous

If you like this phone over the Samsung Galaxy S II, you’ve lost all semblance of perspective and objectivity. You might as well be an Apple customer.

        • Whitl103

Except for the fact that Samsung continually rips of design cues from Apple more blatantly than any other manufacturer and their beastly DROID Charge benchmarks to not instill much hope, given the “inferior” DROID Incredible 2 outpaced it pretty handily.

Perspective and objectivity are not solely based on a list of numbers and specs.

          • Anonymous

Droid Charge != Galaxy S II

          • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

not quite. did you see the low low scores of the charge? yikes. the GS2 got really high scores

          • Anonymous

Why not? The Galaxy S is already running Gingerbread.

          • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

and? that means nothing. 2.1 was the most current OS when it was released, and they have yet to get 2.2. lets see when the GS2 will get the version after 2.3

          • Anonymous

Did you not read that the Galaxy S is already running Gingerbread? Gingerbread is 2.3, FYI.

updates my friend. probably won’t see them on samsung galaxy s 2

        • Anonymous

and being a Samsung fanboy is any better? with the galaxy line you might as well have an iPhone anyway….same design, same icons but no upgrades, haha

          • Jboogie1289

            POW !!!! Ouch !!!!!

          • Anonymous

The Galaxy S is running 2.3 as we speak. Also, I only own a Moto device, but the S2 is looking better than anything the competition has to offer.

        • Anonymous

The Galaxy S II isn’t available on Verizon with LTE. Until it is, this discussion seems rather pointless.

        • Immolate

Two things: Samsung quality is lacking in my experience… the phones feel cheap. I haven’t owned one in a while but my wife’s Fascinate tells me the problem still exists.

The real deal breaker however is the carrier. Until the S2 is available on Verizon, there is nothing Samsung can do to make it competitive to me. It’s like having an Indy car on a go-cart track…. pointless and stupid. I’ve heard rumors about the S2 coming to Verizon, but I suspect the next Bionic/Targa will be out before then and that will probably render the discussion mostly moot. A well-engineered, well-built phone with equal or better specs will be an easy choice for me.

I like that Samsung is trying to make inroads to the nerd community and I hope they succeed, but until they improve their design quality, I will consider them a second-rate player. Please note that I have not touched an S2 yet, so as far as I know, Samsung may have fixed that problem with this instrument. If so, I’ll give it serious consideration if it comes to Verizon.

      • Anonymous

I prefer HTC (although the new LGs are looking pretty dope), but do a little search for the “SAMSUNG GALAXY S II” & u will get what TMEX is saying…..the thing is a beast!!!
