Verizon 4G LTE Networks Down Nationwide (Updated)

Verizon’s brand new 4G LTE network is and has been down across the nation for a number of hours now starting at some point late last night.  Yep, anyone with a Thunderbolt will be running on 1x until they fire this thing back up, even if you are in a non-LTE city.  And toggling your LTE on/off isn’t going to help you either.  Time to pull out the OG?

Verizon has acknowledged the problem:

Possible fix to get you back on “old” 3G while they work out issues: (spursrchamps2007)

Dial ##778# and hit send

* A pop-up window named EPST will show up giving you 2 choices: View Mode and Edit Mode. Pick: Edit Mode.
* Enter the Password: 000000
* Go down to Modem Settings and pick “Rev A“
* You’ll want to choose enable and click OK, hit the menu button and then press “Commit Modifications.”
* Restart your phone and you should see 3G is working

To switch back to 3G/4G, follow same instructions but choose eHRPD.

Update 7:51AM:  We’re hearing reports that Chicago may be fine as well as the Lehigh Valley, PA.

Update 9:02AM:  Verizon with a minor update, although it doesn’t tell us much other than the network is still down for HTC Thunderbolts.

Update 1:47PM:  Another update.  We’re still down in a lot of areas, but at least they have figured out the problem and are starting to bring people back up:

Update 8:32PM:  We just heard from 3 separate sources that the DROID Charge has been delayed due to this network outage.  It looks like we all may be without 4G LTE for a little big longer.

Update 7:36AM (4/28):  We’ve just received word from Verizon that 4G LTE is back up nationally.  Unfortunately eHRPD is not up though, and that means no soft hand-offs between 3G and 4G.

Stay here as we’ll continue to keep you updated…

Cheers Edward, Adam and everyone else!

So hows that 4G treating you 3G haters? This is the exact reason I’m not buying a 4G phone until a few years into it. “4G” on any network is really 3.5G, just like when 3G first came out.

    • Anonymous

      Good for you.

You can turn 4g off so it really isn’t that big of deal. And, I don’t pay extra for 4g. So……

And I don’t think folks hate 3g, they just like faster when available. But make sure you pat yourself on the back for posting.

      • ThePaintPirate

I refer to the haters as the people that seem to believe that there is no point in buying a 3G when 4G is out now. There will always be issues when new technology is rolled out. Would you buy a first gen hover car? Look back on how well the first gen Xbox360 delt with heat.

        • chris

it’s not possible to not buy a 3g phone when all 4g phones have the ability to turn 4g off and stay on 3g. I have an HTC thunderbolt which can run 4g. but its down now so i just switched over to 3g. idc which one i’m running. i didnt even buy a thunderbolt because of 4g. i bought it because its alot faster then then OG droid and has a front facing camera. i only keep 4g enabled because i can and it’s there. the only thing 4g is really good for and that i use mostly use 4g for is video calling on skype at least once a day. still works on 3g tho but faster and better on 4g.

        • Anonymous

Point is I have a TB and I don’t pay extra for 4G. Now this summer when they either start charging extra for 4G or move it to the tiered pricing they claimed they would, they are going to have a hard time asking me to pay more this summer or ever because this TB contract is my last contract. I’m going full retail from now on.

High five to us early adopters!

  • Anonymous

My suggestion is to do the RevA thingy or you will get a pretty quick discharge on the battery. I was down to 35% on the extended battery in like 3 hours and have not even used the phone.

  • The Observer

It’s just after 11 here in Chicago, and 4G is still down.

  • Mike727

    No 4g in Tampa.

4G still unavailable in Denver as of 9:45am MST.
Fortunately I’m in meetings until lunch, so I’m not needing it. Hope VZW pulls it together soon!

  • Umanben

4g has been working all day in columbia, sc.

  • nerdkill

ARGHHHHHHH. Do you have any idea how many restarts and battery pulls I did this morning?! Was about to blame it on my rom and reflash. So now I have no playstation network and no 4g… feel like I’m stuck in the nineties. 1x reminds me of when I got the first iphone and would stare at web pages loading for a half hour, what even was the point?

  • chris

could it have been an update to the 4g network for the new 4g phones like the charge but they are having a problem with the update?

    • chris

I’d also like to add that i suggest verizon fix the problem asap. because the new droid charge running 4g will be released tomorrow and if its not fixed soon i’m sure they will lose alot of buyers for the new 4g phone.

    • chris

I’d also like to add that i suggest verizon fix the problem asap. because the new droid charge running 4g will be released tomorrow and if its not fixed soon i’m sure they will lose alot of buyers for the new 4g phone.

    • Anonymous

No. The loss of service IS the update. “G” stands for “Gotcha”. Good one Verizon, you got us with out mouthes open on this one.

  • Roy Kim

Why are we paying for 4G? I am having terrible issues with Verizon’s folks. Upon spending 30minutes plus, there is no solution to issues. Brown, a tech support, from Salt Lake City promised a follow-up call on 4/4/11…today is 4/27/11 and nothing…

    • LeeInMKE

Oh shut up! “Why are we paying for 4g?” Answer: You’re not. There’s no additional charge for 4G. If 4G is available in your area, you’ll use it, otherwise you won’t. That’s it. There’s no 4G premium on your bill each month. Data is data, it doesn’t matter what speed you’re getting it at. You’re not paying extra.

    • chris

you are paying for 4g? thats weird. verizon must not like you if they are charging u extra for 4g. Because the rest of the planet is paying the same price for 3g and 4g. I’m paying $30 a month for 4g on my thunderbolt which is the same price i payed last month for 3g on my OG droid. so what exactly did u mean by “why are we paying for 4g” when all 4g phones have the ability to switch over to 3g at any time with no extra cost?

  • LAThunderBolt

Thunderbolt running on 3G here in Los Angeles. Has been since last night.

Verizon should subsidize Droid-life for getting information to users before they do. You’d think with the money they are getting from us that we would get a text or an email or something telling us that our phones are fine and it’s their network that’s douched. Tweet? Really? So I have to be a latte drinking princess to find out what’s wrong with my phone? Thank God for Droid-life!

    • Anonymous

…only “latte drinking princesses” use twitter? really?

      • Anonymous

That’s what the memo said. I had to go buy a pair of chinos just to sign up. Then they asked for my starbucks card number and my barnes & noble account number. I gave up after that.

        • thebigmann

          Ooooo I love lattes!

That’s what really sucks. I do too. I just hate admitting it. Hi My name is noneyabidness and I’m a closet latte, chino wearing, tweeter. I feel so close to you right now. Time to write a book.

Getting 1X here in the Cincinnati area (north of). I wonder if this issue is also causing my massive battery drain this morning. Off the charger for 3 hours and down to under 50 percent. I have it on WIFI and have never seen drain like this. Got the Siedio slim extended by the way. Went into battery states and Cell Standby is right under display and is never usually up there. Anyone else getting massive battery drain?

the ##778# isn’t working for me….. any ideas? i go to the phone and enter that, hit send….. and it does nothing……

    • Anonymous

I havent heard of it not working for everyone, i just tried it again. (im sure you are but just to try to help) you are doing # and not * right. Also (once again just covering basics) you “call” the code not a text message (the send has me wondering) besides that it should work. Once you “call” the code you should get a small gray box on the screen with the two options of edit mode or view mode.

      • Anonymous

yeah….. i go to my phone and dial ##778# and hit send. it does nothing…… just takes me back to my home screen.

Ok just found this on XDA “If you are running a non-stock dialer or a rom that included a dialer it may prevent you from entering settings. Flash this zip to go back to stock dialer

This probably won’t work much either as Verizon is also having a 3G outage in various parts accross the country.

Question- If I do the ##778# to Rev A, why wouldn’t I just leave it on this until LTE comes to my area? Pros/ cons?

    • Hawkeye

You would leave it on when 4g comes back it will show up on your phone this option change does not set the phone to 3G only!!

      • Anonymous

Forgot to mention I already turned off LTE in the other menu since LTE isn’t in my area.

    • Spursrchamps2007

I could be wrong, but I think the 3g we switch too, doesn’t allow for talk and data at the same time. You can turn 4g off though all the time by dialing *#*#4636#*#* then going to phone info, you’ll see a drop down box that says lte/cdma (something close to that) sorry on my phone now. Switch that to cdma all auto and your set.

      • Anonymous

Forgot to mention I already turned off LTE in the other menu since LTE isn’t in my area. I’m set to CDMA auto PRL. I just wondered if the eHPRD took more batter power or if it’s harder to lock on 3G when coming from 1x.

  • Anonymous

wow I feel all special Im on the main section lol, thanks wakestrong at xda for making me look good lol.

  • droidrev71

i must say one last time. There are some that aren’t in LTE areas and aren’t getting 3g. I have been stuck on 1x since last night. ???? So its more then a 4G issue! Unless there is a nice expansion in 4G going on.

I Live in Chicago and got 4G just fine, right now at 9:20am central time.
If you want 3G go to the market and download the app LTE OnOff, open the app and were say CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto, click there and chose CDMA auto (PRL) that option is for 3G. work great…

idc if the thunderbolt 3g and 4g r both down. I dont even care if 3g and 4g stay down permanantly. the HTC thunderbolt running a bad signal is still alot better then OG droid running a perfect 3g signal. my tunderbolt had a 1x signal but i was still able to call people with it so its not a big deal. my phone still has a front camera, ability to video call, and is faster in every possible way compared to the OG droid. I used to have one so i know what i’m talking about.

      • )v(urphy

You do realize that 3G/4G is for data usage, not voice. smh

  • http://gspnonline.net Chris

This sucks I have been stuck at 1x speed since yesterday evening 7PM PST. My TBolt has been rendered useless for the time being.

  • John

There is a know problem with the phone jumping down to 1X when 4G is not available. If you toggle to radio to CDMA auto, it will connect to 3G, then you can toggle back to LTE CDMA and it will stay on 3G till 4G comes back.

3G network is working fine everywhere.

    • John

Oh and here is another fix from android central about the 3G 4G switching problem:
      http://www.androidcentral.com/having-3g-problems-your-thunderbolt-fix-just-few-settings-away

    • LionStone

I just called it in…been on 1x since last night too (SFO area) They said for the T-Bolts, 3G and 4G are out nationwide…I haven’t tried the fix here, but I did try to toggle down to 3G (with LTE ON/OFF) but that didn’t work after a few attempts, as well as reboot and batt pulls…

Not happy, but not too worried…jumping on a plane in a few hours, I’ll see what’s up in Atlanta by tonight.

    • Anonymous

I thought the same thing. I was rebooting my phone over and over to get it to work. derp

    • Anonymous

If that’s the case, it’s a huge FAIL. And I’ll be reconsidering jumping onto the 4G bandwagon anytime soon. Reminds me of Bugs Bunny: That first step is a doozy!

      • Dan

It isn’t necessarily that when LTE goes down, 3g does as well.

The Thunderbolt is VZWs first Talk+Data simultaneously phone, and to accomplish that, the architecture of the networks on which it natively resides, 3g included, need to be different. All of that to say that the 3g network the TBolt is on, and the LTE network are related to the extent that if one goes down, so does the other.

With that in mind, you are free to follow the steps:
Use the ##778# menu (hit call after ##778#)–>password is 000000–>modem settings–>Rev A–>choose enable–>hit the menu button on the tbolt and commit changes

This will change the 3g network being used by the TBolt to the old, non-simultaneous network – but you once again have 3g none the less.

With new tech comes hiccups – nature of the beast.

TL;DR – New 3g/LTE down, switch phone to old 3g.

        • Anonymous

          • Dan

I keep my shoe-laces tied, thank you! ;)

        • VzW Tipster

Wrong.. There are two packet cores for their EVDO 3G network.. eHRPD – uses the LTE packet core (3ggp) and the regular HRPD core that is 3ggp2. They are having problems with their LTE packet core so both LTE and eHRPD are having problems. Has nothing to do with a “non-simultaneous network” vs “simultaneous network”

          • Dan

My bad with the wording then. Regardless, both are affected due to using the same packet core.

            Thanks for clarifying.

    • Anonymous

No, its because of eHRPD, which only the TBolt uses.

      • http://iamandroid.co/profile/rocktoonz Rocktoonz

you’d think they could fix their software to let it auto switch when LTE isn’t available down to 3g

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1410450106 Anthony Fallucco

it switches to 3g but the 3g is also down because the thunderbolt uses a new form of 3g to talk and surf the web at the same time.
