City ID is Now the Greatest Bloatware App in History…Because it can be Uninstalled (Sort of) (Updated)

I don’t know how long City ID has been allowing this to go on, but today when notified that my trial of their service was over, I was able to uninstall it.  Yes, you read that correctly.  City ID, known for their notification annoyances on phones like the DROID Incredible, is no longer on my Thunderbolt.

And at this time, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank them personally.  You understand that if we don’t want your app that we should be able to remove it from our phones.  You understand that we like to actually feel like we own our phones by not having permanent fixtures of spam sitting in our app drawer.  You understand that some people have old phones and a minimal amount of app storage space.  You understand that corporate greed should not control a product’s life.  You understand…well, you just understand.  Thank you City ID.

*Update 1* – We should point out that this option appears to only be available on the Thunderbolt.

*Update 2* – As some have also pointed out, the actually CityID.apk still remains in your /system/app folder, but to the average user, that doesn’t mean anything.  They’ll just be happy that the app is gone from their app drawer.

*Silly post I know, but we like to make sure that some of the carriers around the world see that we appreciate little things like this.

Cheers rudyt83!

So, ummm, this might sound strange, but, how do I get it back after doing this?!  Curious for various reasons…

Removed on the Droid X running 2.3.3

  • JayDub

If City Caller ID had a one time fee I would pay for it I actually liked it on my TBolt. I liked how everything lined up when I got a phone call but I found a free app in the mkt. called Instant Area Code which works great on my TBolt & it is also customizable. Been using that since my trial ran out.

I just removed CityID from my DX running Gingerbread 4.5.588. Same easy steps.

  • J4nu5

It’d still be nice if you could remove that crap on any other phone. There are several aps that come preinstalled on phones, but of any of these aps City ID is the stupidest, most useless, most wanted to be unistalled ap and that can’t be done. The other aps are at least sth people would consider using – ie. amazon MP3, Kindle ap.

Most phones show what state you’re calling from anyways based on area code, and with the ability to not have to change your area code when you move since most mobile carriers have no roaming and long distance the fact that I live in San Fran and have a New York area code makes the app moot. I’m not calling from New York anyway…

“THANK YOU” City ID for making this possible PS. YOUR APP IS TOO EXPENSIVE and I HATE YOU!!!

Removing this app was the original reason for my wanting root on my Droid X.

May the Gods of Droid bless the developers at City ID for allowing us to remove it. Can I get an Amen!?
Now if the other crap apps leeching space on my phone would allow that without root I’d be more willing to actually try the products.

  • http://profiles.google.com/booboolala2000 Patrick Crumpler

SSo nice not to see it in my app drawer any more. I have never even opened the app on my TBolt and it said that I was subscribing to it. I hit cancel and viola the option appeared.

  • http://theRamenNoodle.com/ Daniel J. Lewis

Hooray! Thanks for pointing that out. I didn’t catch this when my City ID trial expired.

  • RyMcC

I was actually able to remove CityID immediately after buying the phone on March 28th. At least able to remove it from my App Drawer. I don’t know how I was able to do it and I didn’t really think anything of it when I removed it as this is my first Smartphone. Kind of crazy I went from the LG Dare to the HTC Thunderbolt. What an amazing world it is!

  • Blackhawk5177

    How u remove it tbolt

  • Anonymous

just curious. how much was the monthly charge?

i did a search and couldn’t find anything about the evils of City ID.

  • Lickit

Omg, where else could i get such enlightening news??????

  • DanSke

Hmmmm, I don’t know what I did, but I don’t seem to have CityID on my TBolt and its non-rooted thus far. Interesting. It would be grand if VZ Navigator came off that easy, but I’ll have to root for that.

  • Anonymous

    Nevermind i got it :)

  • Anonymous

    I can’t uninstall it from my tbolt….:(

    • tomNasty

you hit no 1st on the app

    • Jboogie1289

I can’t get it to uninstall either!!! It isn’t lit up (uninstall button) for me to get rid of it. Crap!!!!!

    • Jboogie1289

  • Chris Newman

Ran it on my DROIDX Gingerbread build 4.5.588 and got the same responses. Trial expired would you like to remove/confirm. Takes it out of the app drawer and leaves it in your application list, though it is greyed out.

  • Anonymous

Here’s a better question. How has someone not compiled a database of all area codes and made a program that does the same thing, for free? Seriously, how hard could it be? It’s not like area codes change all that often.

    • Anonymous

Hell, i’d pay a buck for that… but a monthly fee for that shit is nonsensical

Cequint, the company behind CityID has a patent on the feature for mobile phones. Everyone else who tries to develop their own app gets a letter or lawsuit from their lawyers.

    • http://twitter.com/LiveInTheDream litd

Oh there is the same thing for free. I have it installed on my phone. It got shut down in January(ish) 2010 due to a lawsuit. I happened to keep it, backed it up, and I still use it daily.

City Caller Id v1.0.20. Go see if you can find it online. I don’t think I have the right to distribute it.

      • Anonymous

I did the same exact thing with City Caller ID.

  • Larry M.

That sucks. The trial on my Droid X expired eons ago, and that load of crapware is still on my phone with no option for removing it. Since Gingerbread will likely be the last update on the Droid X from Moto, I will root right after I get it, and be free of all the crapware.

  • The350zWolf

At the tune of the “Ghostbusters theme”…. So, who re you going to call??? ROOT EXPLORER!

    City Id b-gone!

    • RW-1

Yes, and for the unrooted user? Nope …

      • The350zWolf

I guess that all unrooted users will be haunted by the ghost of CityId…..boooahahahaha! ;^)

        • Anonymous

          Got Root :) I do (like “i Don’t, Droid Does”….) at least I != i :)
Even saved my Angry birds data :)

  • Vinny P.

I actually like the CityID app and pay for it each month! :O Learned to love the feature on an old Sprint phone many years ago and in my business it helps enormously to have an idea of the city/state the call is coming from. BUT, I agree that the software like any other should be easily removable for anyone who doesn’t want it…

In the early stages of the android market there was a developer that made an app called city caller id and it was free until he got legally threaten to stop his effort. He tried to fight by asking for donations for his defense, but he realized he had no chance, so he removed it from the market. My guess that the people behind this are CityId. For that they will not have my patronage ever. Corporate greed.

  • http://profiles.google.com/bsthinker61 brent saunders

They have singlehandedly improved my end user experience. Thanks CityID.

  • http://www.mydigitalwhiteboard.wordpress.com anim

did not work on my Dx

  • jdsingle

Hmmm…I didn’t mind CityID. Anytime your service expires at least on the DInc., just wipe all contents under application settings and you’re good to go.

  • graphitedv

    Worked on my D2…

  • Zach

You can uninstall it the same way on the Droid2/DroidX Gingerbread leak…..

    • Joe12304

That’s because you voided your warranty by rooting like a tard…

      • Andrew

        You sir, are an idiot.

  • http://twitter.com/kevinx108 Kevin X

You might thank them for letting you install it. I thank them for being the motivator for me to figure out how to root my Droid X. I refused to be spammed by software I didn’t on want on my own device! And shortly after fixing that worthless piece of adware, I discovered the boundless frontier of having true, unlimited access to my mobile device. Rooting has made my DX my second most favorite gadget ever after my Eee 701.

  • http://www.twitter.com/MaxMoulton MaxMoulton

I experienced this on my thunderbolt as well. however I still find it when I go through “manage applications”. it’s still lingering around… but not in my app drawer. better than nothing I suppose.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ken.obrien3 Ken O’Brien

I removed this about two weeks ago when my trial expired, I too was shocked

  • Alejandrorfernandez

awesome. Was able to remove from my droid x.

  • LionStone

Well that is sure good news…still can’t uninstall from applications, so I guess I still have to wait until the option pops up for me to uninstall…thanks for the info, ill look out for it now!

  • rudyy

    +1000 and good riddance.
course I had to root my droid x to get rid of the nuisance.

  • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

    isn’t this old news?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=52902597 Sam Schwartz

yes it is removed from your app drawer but it does not remove the apk file. still under the system file after removal.

  • woojoo83

just tried on my stock/un-rooted droid x and it is not available. i tried through the droid’s application list and by opening city id and clicking “no” for paying for it and nothing….anyone have any luck with the X?

    • Anonymous

Appears to be Thunderbolt only at this time.

      • droidinmind

Works on rooted DX for me!

      • http://profiles.google.com/kjdevaney1 K DeVaney

Worked on the DX for me running the GB build.

  • http://twitter.com/Crispityyy Chris Spells

Very nice….however I’m STILL going to root, and UNINSTALL on the 1st day lol

  • Cdclark190

I believe this is only on the Tbolt though unfortunately…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1639081047 Joseph DiPierno

this actually made me very happy!

  • Anonymous

I accidentally came across this the other day and didn’t think anything about it.. Should have let Droid-life in on the secret. My sincere apologies!

  • Anonymous

Mobile justice is finally being served and hopefully all of the other bloatware apps follow suit.

  • Anonymous

nice! if i didn’t ROM my DX i would be more excited
