Root DROIDX Gingerbread 4.5.588 Using GingerBreak V1.10

If you grabbed that semi-official DROIDX  Gingerbread build 4.5.588 from a few weeks back and didn’t wait for the steps to update with root, you are now in luck.  XDA member chainfire has released an app called GingerBreak that worked flawlessly on my non-rooted DX the first time.  The app is actually based off of an exploit found by the Android Exploid Crew.

Download:  GingerBreak-v1.1.0.apk Update:  Here is version 1.2.

Instructions:

1.  Turn on USB Debugging on your phone.
2.  Download and install the app from above.
3.  Open it and hit the “Root device” button.
4.  Your phone will reboot when it’s finished, with root access.

To make sure you have the latest version of GingerBreak and to read up on possible bugs including random SD card formats, you’ll want to watch this XDA thread.

Cheers Evan!

There is no guidance on how where on the device the apk should be loaded.  I’ve been able to copy it to /tmp on the device.  However, it has — file attributes and won’t run and can’t be deleted.  Anyone who can help me delete it or change the file attributes to -rw, please post here.  Thanks!

I’ve downloaded and ran the app, but it just keeps spinning. tried twice with no result

  • Charles Holz

I followed the steps, but when I got to the “root device” step, it never stopped “rooting”. I ran it for three hours, verified I had 3G, rebooted, redownloaded the app
    Nothing is working.

    Please help!!!

I have a droid x and was flashing a new ROM (which I flashed incorrectly, using part 1 only from http://www.droid-life.com/2011/05/28/download-official-droidx-gingerbread-4-5-596-for-rooted-users/ using ROM manager to install, mistakenly thinking that’s what I was supposed to do). I can get to the Android System Recovery (by pressing home and power then search) however when I choose to wipe the phone I get an error saying “E:Can’t mount CACH:recovery/command” and “E:Can’t mount CACHE.recovery/log”. When I say to wipe the cache or apply sdcard:update.zip I get a similar error. I tried using SBF (the FROYO Droid X build) and RSD Lite (I am able to get to the boot loader menu, by pressing camera, volume down, power). After running RSD Lite, correctly (I have done it twice before) everything works up until the reboot. It gives me a progress percentage as if it is working until it gets to 100%, where it stays at 100% for hours. In the entire reboot process, my phone flashes the boot logo, turns off, flashes the boot logo, turns off, etc. When I attempt to turn the phone on it stays on the boot logo…

I can provide any additional information if needed. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Sorry to bug everyone, I just don’t know who else to ask or where else to go and am freaking out that I just destroyed my $600 phone without any money to buy a new one or a backup to fall back on. I’m sure your very busy people and I thank you for any time you may provide.

    Please, help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :’[

  • Stonecoldgodjira

ok but what do you do if your phone was rooted before and the update unrooted it.  Will this app still work?

  • Jesriv

Tried version 1.1 and later version 1.2 on my DroidX with OTA Gingerbread and it did not work. Yes, USB debugging on.

  • Kaushalp88

Does this work on the official OTA update? Anyone try it yet?

  • Tmarie100889

  • Curtisj7fb

Do you need to download Gingerbread onto the computer, the phone, or at all?

Thos is awesome.. too easy to root this way using 2.2.1 and now rooted using liberty . One question though, how do you unroot using this root method ? Not planning on a new new droid anytime soon, but I was just wondering if there’s multiple steps? I unrooted droid 1, but that was a long time ago and forget easily. Can anybody tell me.. ?

  • Badassbosoxfan

So what are the differences between the rooted and non-rooted version. I had the non-rooted and just installed the apk to root my X. Is there anything in particular I should look for? Please help a non-techy noob…lol

  • garrett

    is this deodexed?

  • Marvin_bermudez

Hi Evan, does one download the file to the device? I can only download to the SD card. Is this correct?

    • garrett

download on computer and drop on sd card. open the files app and click on the file and hit install. and done.

  • surf2

can you flash liberty rom once rooted on Gingerbread? or do i need to sbf to froyo again.

  • Swinblack

To unroot all you have to do is uninstall superuser.apk and also remove su from /system/bin

      • Abstrakmind

that’s all I have to do if I want to unroot to get the official OTA update later? 100% sure?

  • HuskerPower10

Does anyone know (Kellex) if this will work for the 4.5.573 version of Gingerbread that was initially released for the DROIDX?

    • droidinmind

      I have the same question!

    • http://profiles.google.com/kjdevaney1 K DeVaney

Does this work on the Droid 2 with GB 4.5.153.A955?

  • Anonymous

This looks promising, but I had rooted Gingerbread on my DX before and it seemed to make my phone go haywire. I may wait until the official release too and stay on Liberty 2.0. Do we think that official gingerbread will be rootable?

  • napes22

Are there any advantages to going with the more recent GB release? I’m still on the initial leak with no major issues. Not really interested in flashing and starting from scratch at the moment.

    • YourMomsLooseTwaht

      No, both are bug ridden.

      • Guest

Upon looking up fail in the dictionary, I’m not surprised to find this overused screen-name as an example.

Although you are right about the bugs.

  • YourMomsLooseTwaht

Thanks for posting this instead of an advertisement. It is appreciated.

Me too. I don’t want to wipe my phone. I just want it rooted. I don’t care HOW good GB is. If it ain’t rooted (on OTA). I’m staying on Froyo til it is.

      • HuskerPower10

You dont have to wipe your phone to get GB…The original leak (4.5.573 version) using bootstrap basically just upgrades your phone…all your data is still there your phone just runs a ton faster and has the new OS

        • http://www.facebook.com/nathanielnewmanmusic Nathaniel Newman

Is this build (4.5.588) also the same way?
