Wednesday Poll: How do you protect your Android?

Anyone taking any extra measures to keep their Android phone protected?  Hard case?  Soft case?  Screen protector?  Naked?  As you can see from my lineup above, my phones live on the wild side, but that doesn’t mean that all of you should.  For those of us that sit at a computer all day and rarely take our phones into battle, it’s OK, but for those of you grindin’ every day, a little extra padding may be needed.  So, who’s using a case?  And to help out the rest of our readers, feel free to list out the form of protection keeping your device safe in the comments (brand, case type, etc.)

How do you protect your Android?

I am a loyal Droid-Life reader and I also own a company that makes screen and device protective film. It is by far the best on market and 100% lifetime warrantied. Give us a try. http://www.covertshield.com

  • steve

droid x with a full body invisishield and screen protector. removed the pieces that are on the matte plastic since they didn’t adhere well.

  • Zagg Screen Protector, Lifetime Warranty.

  • Admin

For both my of DROID and my DROID x I used an ebay case and screen protector. I’ve had my DROID x since launch and the rubber case has protected very well. There’s one little scuff mark on the corner where the wrist strap would go because it doesn’t cover that part. I drop my phone quite frequently. The screen protector holds up nicely as well.

  • Droid X, just the screen protector from Zagg. Never need a damn thing else.

  • Droid Incredible with a screen-only BestSkinsEver guard and the Case-Mate Tough Case as protection.

I highly, highly recommend both products and brands; couldn’t be happier. I’ve had a handful of unfortunate, accidental drops since October and the phone still looks and operates like new.

  • shroomz

well i think if you don’t drop your phone you don’t really need any sort of protection. most if not all of these phones DO have gorilla glass, so it’s pretty unnecessary. (OG Droid)

  • Jeffgee

My Droid is protected using one of my x-large condoms! lol

  • Theantt21

I got og droid.. used to use covers for it but dirt would accumulate inside it now I just use meh screen protector and let my droid breathe! Ps screen protector makes the screen work smoother

Skinomi Carbon Fiber Skin and Screen Protector. Far better than a case, and adds a nice texture to hold onto it. I went naked with my Droid 1 after using a case for 2-3weeks. I hated the added bulk.

  • Jarch3r

I have tried many protectors and cases for my phones over the years. They generally make the phone uglier, larger, and sometimes the case has to be removed to do something with your phone (car dock)*.
The cases can get scratched, marred, and broken as well. What do you have then?
A scratched, uglier, and less useful version of your phone.

Lose the case and let it breathe. 🙂

*Reviews of the case that fit in the car dock were iffy, plus I had already purchased the original.

  • I keep flip-flopping between case&screen protector, just a case, just a screen protector, and nothing. LOL. I LOVE having my Thunderbolt totally naked, it’s a gorgeous device that feels wonderful in my hands. But it took a couple of good spills this past weekend and now the battery has a ding in it (I’m talented…), and a pretty good gouge out of the top left corner of the device. Whoops. But only a tiny scratch in the screen! Wooo.

  • Anonymous

Steinheil Crystal Clear is the way to go. Feels just like the naked screen with no “orange peel” like the Zagg.

BTW, why are some people so angry in their comments about screen protectors and cases?

I absolutely love how my DX looks, but in my daily routine @ work if I didnt have such a bada$s case on it, i would probably be on my 20th phone by now. So, hatin it but my DX only leaves its otterbox when someone asks what kinda phone it is.

Had just a screen protector until my TBolt took a digger on week 1. Enough of a scare and superficial damage to make me purchase a Seidio Innocase II. And I’ve been going with the ZAGG InvisibleShield for screens for a few years now.

  • Rebecca C

I like to keep my phones for a long time (or rather, I can’t afford to upgrade my phone often) so I use one of those two-part rubber and hard cases. Probably overkill for most people, but I’m a ditz. My phone takes quite a few dives.

  • Anonymous

    With a 357 Magnum….any questions?

  • Quad5s

Otterbox defender always, no case? Have fun spending 500 bucks on a new phone if you drop it

  • Why would you put a screen protector on gorilla glass?

  • Anonymous

I have a screen protector & a belt clip that just covers the screen for my OG Droid. As for my Xoom, currently only screen protector, but want to get a nice portfolio case for it (seem them for Kindles & iPads)

  • MrBucket

I hate phone cases – always have. They tried so hard to sell me one when I bought my Droid but it just wouldn’t feel right with a case on it.

take your screen protectors off.. don’t support those chinese manufactures who make these pieces of plastic for $0.002 and charge you $10

  • Anonymous

if you use a screen protector your an idiot.. unless you put your wedding ring in the same pocket as your phone you have nothing to worry about, my droid x screen has not a blemish on it, owned it since July.. all screen protectors do is make your screen less responsive, harder to see, and harder to move your finger around… it’s like those EmergenC pills, they do nothing… and keeping is clean is not an excuse, when your screen gets dirty, you get a wet rag and wipe it off, when your screen protector gets dirty you throw it away

and I don’t have a case either because I don’t drop my phones, and if I did the motorola phones are least are rubberized metal and are designed to withstand moderate scratches.. beyond that cases add bulk, silicon ones make it impossible to take out of your jean pockets, and the phones are beautiful as it is and moto phones feel great in your hand, I don’t want to cover them up with some POS plastic

  • Anonymous

    Ziploc bag and Pelican case.

  • Cases are Lame

Most cases are useless and just adds bulk. Unless you really want to prevent scratches on the back of the phone which of course doesn’t change the phones functionality.

I don’t understand why people care about getting the back of their phone scratched. The only thing on the back that needs scratch protection is the camera lens and most cases don’t protect that.

    • Cases are for Losers

yup, cases are stupid. it’s a freaking phone.

      • Sprotthedestroyer

When you live on a beach, nothing but sand and water… a case is where its at. So many times I look down, wind has blown sand all over phone while I was napping in chair next to water, remove the case. Phone is clean. Wash case. I’m also protecting the slide, got an OGD.

        • Anonymous

But most homeless people who live on beaches can’t afford smartphones. You must be in a very small minority 🙂

  • Tergiversator_Maximus

Still using the same screen protector they installed during the activation, February 2010. OG Drooiiid FTW!

  • that’s a sexy picture
should’ve made it a little higher res for a wallpaper spot

  • garrett

screen protectors look like shit, glass only scratches from rough hard objects like if your an idiot and drop your phone on the strett. screen protectors are plastic and actually scratch easier than glass. waste of moneyyy

  • I seem to buy a case with every new phone, then get rid of it 4 weeks later.

  • Anonymous

I had a case and screen protector on my OG DROID since day one but the case broke and screen protector came off so I live naked now lol

  • Shanklin07

If you use a hard case or really any case for that matter it feels like your not using the right phone. I hate cases with a passion. Why buy a high end phone that some great engineer’s spent countless hours designing it’s beautiful look if your just going to buy a 20 dollar case to cover it up? I know I know, “Im protecting my phone, I don’t want scratches on it or it to break”. You would probably also jump off a bridge if someone told you it made your di*k bigger. Live life and do not worry about the things that do not matter at all. Having fun, getting laid, and getting high off life or whatever your thing is. Oh man 4:20 is almost over….damn did I write all this?

  • chris

I gurantee you half the people chose “My phone lives naked. Nothing protecting it.” because it says “naked”. because trust me. i almost chose it because it said “naked” but i don’t lie. jk. i sometimes lie

  • Kingbo777

Otterbox Defender for the HTC Evo.

  • Anonymous

I am one of the people who uses the invisible shield. Makes the device all grippy and it looks really good 🙂 I don’t drop my phone much so I don’t have to worry about the shield getting all messed up.

  • GotSka81

My insurance plan protects my phone. Sure, I have to pay a monthly fee and a lame deductible if I break it, but it’s worth it to not have a case on it and to get a nice new/refurb phone if I drop it.

  • Anonymous

i started with the Verizon soft case for the OG Droid w/ screen protector. was a bit bulky and the non-slip was great for attracting lint and making the phone hard to get out of my pocket.

next was Seidio case. sleeker. cool new color.

after overclocking, though, temps started getting a bit high for my taste so went screen protector only.

that started getting some peeling edges so now i’m naked.

why isn’t there a selection for that?!? 😉

  • Adam Metzner

Useing a Case/cover is like that plastic cover old people put on couches, sure it protects it but looks and feels like ass.

  • what the hell is other?? self made plastic wrap?? lol

  • Anonymous

    Nothing.

There’s no case that will allow me to use my DX in my car cradle. The phone spends more time in the cradle than it does in my pocket. Why should I get a case for it?

  • ironick

My D1 screen has never been touched without protection… the rest of it on the other hand has some paint scars.

I rock my incredible with the red back, no case, looking sexy as possible. I use the zagg screen protector, and am pretty happy with it. I bought the otterbox defender series for it, but I think it makes my phone into a brick. Anyone want it? It’s free to the first guy who wants it, and in perfect condition. I’ll also throw in the rocketfish blue silicone one too.
But, I have a question for someone. Anyone rock the incredible without a screen protector? I really wanna go naked, but I’m worried it might not be scratch resistant.

    • Drummer62

I don’t use a screen protector on my incredible and it’s been fine. It is either in my front pocket with nothing else or on my desk or in my hand. I’ve had it for almost a year now and not one scratch on it so far.

    • Andrew

I don’t use a screen protector, just don’t put it in your pocket with change, keys, etc.

  • Guardianlvg

I use the Trident Cyclops for my MT4G, was running naked but after seeing a buddy drop his while getting out of his big rig, I decided I needed some protection and for the money nothing came close

  • CaptainHowdy

I used to use a hard case, and screen protector on my D2. Case was crap and annoying, screen protector fell off… Now we have dings allover and I couldnt get warranty service anymore per Verizon’s nice little rules.

  • Lakerzz

Hard case and holster, and no screen protector…only when at work, (Electrician). On the weekend, its naked.

  • I have an OG Droid and it is naked…I got a hard plastic case for it when I got it at launch, but it was just to obscure and cut off previous real-estate on the keyboard(which Ironically I hardly ever use).

  • djembeman

I just use the hard plastic holster and the leather pouch with belt clip. Naked other than carrying it around in a pouch or holster on my belt. No scratches, no dents or dings. I tried the Zagg screen protector when I first got my droid, but took it off because it got kinda rubbery feeling. Droid 1 still rocks!!

  • Anonymous

My tbolt doesn’t need that unless its on concrete….not likely…so ill take my chances….besides it is gorilla glass though….

  • Everytime I get a screen protector and case for my phone, I end up dropping it and breaking the front piece of the case (OG droid). It’s nekkid right now and I haven’t dropped it on anything hard.

  • Jory121

I put the…. barely there case on my thunderbolt from case mate its pretty sick

  • John

    Screen protectors == marketing gimmick

    • pj

Please explain a little bit better.? You sound misinformed.

  • Elijah

@Kellex I know you use Verizon from your phone lineup but then how do you use the Nexus S? Are you multi-carrier?

    • Anonymous

he bought that to review future versions of android, otherwise he is a verizon guy….

  • With regards to screen protectors, I’ve had a number of quality brands including ZAGG, OtterBox, Incipio and the like. I really dig the Seidio Ultimate protector. It’s a static mount for an easy, slop-free install without need for liquids. Can’t even tell it’s on there, no “rainbow effect” across the display.

  • I love how many people use screen protectors. They are truly NOT needed on the new generation of screens….

    • FyreRhett

A friend of mine has already cracked his screen on his tbolt. Shattered really. Screen protector is holding it together, and it still works!

    • Mjcoop1575

Cracks me up seeing people with these sleek designed phones that took years of R&D with cases that triple the thickness. By people I mean about every Iphone owner

  • Why do I need a case when my phone is made of metal? Maybe if I had one made out of glass and I was afraid it would shatter if it touched anything….

  • The phone already has a case… Why would you put a case over teh casing that is protecting the guts of the phone. It’s a waste of money.

  • Anonymous

My X doesn’t need none of that stuff. Gorilla glass and build like a tank are enough. I have dropped it a few times with only tiny scuffing to show.

  • shr1k3r

Only a screen protector, fell on the floor face down with a book on top and smashed the screen… don’t know if the invisibe shield hurt or helped it there

  • EC8CH

Only reason to put a case on the OGD is to hold the battery cover on 😛

  • Anonymous

by droid x battery cover ALWAYS comes off without a case so i have to have a case with me

is this normal? or should it be as tight as the OG Droid back?

  • EC8CH

Cases need protection from my Droid.

  • Emeraldjun

I can’t risk breaking my phone as I don’t have warranty on it (off-contract), so Steinheil Ultra Clear and the OEM Kickstand Fascinate Case works good enough.

  • Laz

OG Droid with a bodyglove case. I prefer naked but i don’t want to chance dropping it.

  • karyncristina

I’m pretty paranoid about not having a screen protector & case so I use a Steinheil Anti-Fingerprint and a Seidio Active case on my Droid X.

  • Man up: Rock your Droid bareback.

  • Rymac

at home i use a mobi hard case with a screen protector, but while i am at work at the firehouse i use a silicon case because it is likely for it to fall or be dropped when gearing up for a call.

  • Scott Holm

My OG droid is naked and beat up pretty bad, I’ve dropped it on concrete and rocks a few times, but the glass has yet to be scratched. I wish all phones were built this well

  • WBMc36

steinheil crystal clear screen protector on my incredible. Tried almost every form of screen protection, can’t go naked, phones cost too much in the first place so i want to keep mine as nice as possible for as long as possible.

  • Mr.Joe

My phones have always been naked. I still baby them like hell. I even tuck it in at night :3

  • On an unrelated topic, one of the sidebar ads on my screen is for the BlackBerry Playbook. Any dollar will do, eh Kellex?

  • my droid x is protected by otterbox defender series which has a built in screen protector

  • MattInPDX

The major annoyance I have with the case on my OG Droid is that I have to remote it to use the car dock.

  • I’m rocking the Zagg Invisible Shield on my OG Droid. I had been using the screen protectors from Verizon, but was going through a 3 pack once a month @ 10.99. I’d use 2 to get it applied correctly and the third would need to go on after about 2 weeks.

The Zagg cost a bit more, but they warrant it fully and I’ve yet to need a replacement…aside from replacing the original b/c I got air bubbles. I called it a warranty issue and received a new one.

  • Anonymous

I’ve been enjoying this day. Slow day for Droid life though.

  • Anonymous

OG Droid, ZAGG film on the glass then i have a hybrid hard/soft shell case.

  • Got to go naked screen protectors suck….got to keep my phone looking sexy

  • Davros / aka Chris Nimon

For drop protection I couldnt find anything in the same league as the Trident Kraken case. Hardshell with a rubber outer shell and screen protector attached to the case. I also like how it makes the Droid X feel like a small tablet. http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt50/chrisnimon/Droid%20Life%20screenies/KKN-DX-BK.gif

  • YourMomsTwaht

    Zagg for the win.

  • I’ve got a silicone case and a oleophobic SGP screen protector.. I’ve dropped it enough to get my money’s worth out of the silicone case. and it’s 100% intact. The SGP oleophobic is great cuz i can wipe it off much easier than the screen.. The only gripe i have with my phone is the coating peeling off the edge on the kickstand on the Tbolt.. do they have kickstand protectors? lol

    • Anonymous

Haha. Me too! Just at the edge.

    • I just looked at my kickstand, that’s happening to me too. I hadn’t realized until you pointed it out… Dammit!

  • Anonymous

I had one of those vinyl skins on it for a while. It eventually peeled off and I’m too lazy to apply another one. No problems without it.

I never ever drop my phone. People with poor grip may make a different choice.

  • Anonymous

i have clear case but only because my Evo’s camera sticks out a little bit and i dont want it to get scratched if i slide it onto the table or something..otherwise it would be naked and free, mooning everybody who catches a glimpse of it

  • Ben

Is the Nexus S really as thick as it looks in that picture?

    • Anonymous

Not thick at all….it does have a slight curve though, so the pic probably seems thicker due to that

      • Ben

        Hah, yeah I figured.

In that picture, however, it looks very thick to me.

      • Ben

It’s my Beth in a Box, babay!

  • Wachatalknboutwillis

Rockin’ my OG Droid naked… but enough about me, seriously gorilla glass is great, but I did get a scratch from coins in my pocket, keys don’t hurt it, one time even accidentally had nails in the same pocket and nothing, but for some reason 35 cents worth of coins put the only scratch in the gorilla glass that there is. Go figure. I also, read someone else had this same issue with gorilla glass and coins.

  • FortitudineVincimus

whats that, about $2000 in phones?

  • Anonymous

    otterbox baby!

  • Anonymous

I can’t speak for the newer lines of Motorola phones, but the D1 is made of metal and very hard plastic and has gorilla glass for its screen. Adding a case or screen protector is just being redundant.

    • I’ve seen some very banged up D1 phones come in to my store for repair… If they are durable I don’t even wanna know what people are doing to those phones… LOL.

  • Am I the only one that uses Ghost Armor?

  • I always turn my head sideways a bit when I see people with hideous cases on their phones. The glass on my phone can literally stop a bullet!
One of my friends has a huge silicone condom and a scratched up plastic cover on the screen of her i*hone. Undo all that sexy design and fancy glass with cheap plastic!

  • Anonymous

I recently purchased the Skinomi Carbon Fiber TechSkin for my Viewsonic GTablet and their clear skin for the screen. So far I love it! Their customer service is amazing and the products are really easy to install. I highly suggest trying them. Plus they have video how to’s and a lifetime warranty!

  • All my phones go naked. I tried the screen protector on my OG when I first got it, but made it feel to rubbery, which made doing all the swiping motions very hard.

  • Healy1818

droid 2 global is wearing nothing, its been to iraq a few times, dropped in military vehicle quite a few times, a couple of sandstorms in kuwait and its still going good which only a few scratches and a dent in its grill

      • Healy1818

thanks bunches!! its going really good so far. the internet is crazy fast for it. i got grandfathered in on VZW unlimited global internet. i use it all the time. the battery life is not good though. i have it plugged in 24/7

  • Flyinion

Oops accidentally voted naked but using a screen protector only. May not even put a new one on once this one is dead though. Used to use a case, but on the OG Droid that meant having to remove it to use the car or home dock. It seems the slider models can only use the hard plastic cases which are a pain to get off. If I upgrade to an all touch screen model that can run a soft case that’s easy to remove for the docks, I probably will use one then.

  • RobM

I find screen protectors to be a real nuisance. Microfiber doesn’t work well on them, but they work perfectly on the naked glass. My OG Droid stayed naked. However for my Thunderbolt I grabbed a $3 thin soft-gel skin/case that I’m pretty happy with.

  • Anonymous

Getting a zagg full cover in a few days for my tbolt, i would’ve gotten nothing but somehow i got a tiny scratch on the screen. My OG was a tough one though…

ClearProtector on the screen and a clip-on hard case on the back (due to the extended battery)

  • SGP Steinheil Ultra Crystal Screen Protector and Black Soft Silicone case for me!

  • HTC Desire is wrapped in an Otterbox Communicator series case. I left the screen protector off!

  • DanSke

Invisible Shield screen protector and a soft gel smoke Argyle case. I keep my baby protected and clean. Even if you don’t drop it, wear and tear will still show over time, better to cover you bases IMHO.

  • Anonymous

I only use the SGP screen protector to reduce glare and fingerprints, not so much for protecting the screen.

The way I look at it I have no case or screen protector because if it break it is a good reason to buy a new high end phone, and screen protectors make the screen feel weird and get greasy.

    • OhhhhYeah

Nice reasoning. Sounds like you got more money than brains. If you were smart, you’d protect your current phone then when the new high end phone comes out you could sell your old phone and not pay too much out of pocket. Hahaha

  • I wish I could have my phone naked, but without my case it slips out of my hand!

I agree… this is a great poll topic

  • screen protectors get dirty and greasy and peel off. cases block the top row of my droid2’s keyboard. my d2 is a nudest. 🙂

  • people are stupid to not use a case on there $500 something smart phones. you will be regretting it when you drop it unprotected and crack the screen.

    • Please… I’ve dropped my Droid(s) so many times…. In fact I haven’t seen Gorilla Glass crack, although I’m sure it’s possible. I keep my DX in my front pocket with keys and change and other crap… no scratches. hah!

If I had a dollar for everytime I’ve dropped my Droid 1, I’d have enough money to buy a new phone off-contract. Yet my Droid is 100% scratch/dent free. The only part that has noticable wear is the camera button. For some reason the gold-ish colored paint wore off. Other than that it’s in perfect condition. Motorola phones are made like tanks.

    • That’s what accidental damage protection plans are for. 😉 geek squad black tie FTW. if I smash my screen I get a refurb device to replace it in 3-5 days.

  • SmalleyJ

A case is like a condom it just feels better without one

    • very true

    • Anonymous

True, but I don’t want my phone to get STDs… Scratches To Device.

    • FortitudineVincimus

      do they make magnum cases?

      • Anonymous

yes, got one on my thunderbolt

    • famester

I felt this way until I got the rubber with hard outer shell case for the tbolt from Verizon and it actually feels better with the case on

    • eddieonofre

I use to think the same but then one chick scare my life off coz when she told her month havent come yet…

      • Tergiversator_Maximus

To clarify – you used to think that not wearing a condom felt better until one chick nearly scared you to death when she told you she hadn’t yet had her period even though it was past the usual time for that monthly occurrence?

        • Thank you for translating that. I hope to God he is a foreigner.

        • eddieonofre

          lol…

    • EC8CH

Imagine if your phone needed to wear a rubber just to get reception… 😛

      • Kite4734

Haha I see what you did there 🙂

      • Tincanpuller

        You mean it doesn’t?

    • Hahahahaha

Yeah if your f**king with it. Idk what you do with your phones though….

      • Droidzzz

        Dildroid application?

    • Hahahahaha

Yeah if your f**king with it. Idk what you do with your phones though….

  • DBK

Full Zagg Invisible Shield…only the best for my Droid 🙂

  • Motorola phones are tough as hell… I beat the sh!t out of my OG Droid when I had it and it still looked near new when I sold it. My DX has been naked since its release and has seen some stuff… been dropped more times than I can remember. Not a single scratch on the screen, and just a badass piece of technological wonder. 🙂

    • DBK

Seriously, I’ve lost count on how may times I’ve dropped my D2 or how many times it got covered in “stuff”, yet it has always come out scratch free, dent free, and “stuff” free. My Invisible Shield really isn’t necessary, but better safe than sorry. 🙂

      • corn-ut

        ok im sorry but “stuff?”

    • Bogy25

Damn straight! Try drop’n that Crapple phone and see what happens…….Smassssshh *glass shatters everywhere* >:P

Naked baby! My OG Droid has been naked since release date and it’s still sexy.

    • me too! og FTW

    • Anonymous

Me, too. 17 months of absolute nakedness in pants pocket, coat pocket, a few drops, etc. A few tiny dings in the case, but not even the tiniest scratch on the glass. God, I love Gorilla Glass.

  • Ilovechi23

    No xoom love kellex?

  • Android

Android devices are too sexy to smear with screen covers and cases

    • To keep mine protected I lock it in a safe and never let it out. Let’s see it get scratched like that! I agree, but I had to put a case on my Nexus S since it’s so dang slippery. My DX went naked though, it was big enough as it was.

  • words of advice: buy cases and screen protectors on amazon. you can buy at least 50 screen protectors on amazon for the price of 1 pack of 3 at verizon

  • Daniel Ogilvie

Droid X OtterBox with screen protector.

  • Goblueboy

    • Anonymous
