Download: Gingerbread CRT Screen-off Animation for DROID X and 2 (Updated)

YouTube Preview Image

Many of you noticed that that CRT-esque screen-off animation from the Nexus S and stock Gingerbread (Android 2.3) was missing from the leaked builds on the DROID X and 2 and wondered how to get it.  It’s now available below, although you’ll need to run a few adb commands to get it.

Instructions:

*Note* – This will likely not work on anything but Gingerbread.  I would not try to flash this on a 2.2 ROM.

*Note 2* – I have not tested this on a DROID2, just assumed it would work.  Be careful D2 owners.

UPDATE:  There is now a simple .zip file that can be flashed in Clockwork.  [Download]

1.  CREATE A BACKUP FIRST.
2.  Download this file to your computer:  framework-res_CRT_ENABLE.apk
3.  Rename it to framework-res.apk and place in your SDK/Tools folder.
4.  Connect your phone and run the following commands in adb:

adb remount
adb push framework-res.apk /data/local/tmp/framework-res.apk
adb shell
su
stop
rm /system/framework/framework-res.apk
cp /data/local/tmp/framework-res.apk /system/framework/
rm /data/local/tmp/framework-res.apk
reboot

5.  Your phone will reboot and with CRT screen-off set to “Go!”

Full support can be found at this XDA thread.

Cheers Max and Droidzfx!

Can we use the DX bootstrap or the D2 one (I am on the droid x and I thought someone said to use the d2 one.)

  • Robert M

that fix for droid 2 apk wont install [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES] and unknown sources is checked

  • gr8515

    what is adb?

    • http://www.facebook.com/oldblueeyes182 Joshua Bailey

If you don’t know, don’t try it yet. Flashing framework to your phone is a little dangerous. Try flashing an app or two first. ADB stands for Android debug bridge and is used by devs and modders to install new apps, backup their entire phones, develop new apps and pretty much anything else you can think of. It comes with the Android SDK. Do a little research and try it out.

      • gr8515

installed gb on my droid x using the first link that was put up. Now when i try to boot into recovery the android with the triangle just stays on the screen. My phone works fine except for the fact that it takes about 10 min to fully load up. Can you help?

can someone please post a Droid 2 zip file for the fix that has been made.
im too much of a noob to understand this adb process.

    please and thank you!!

  • Piemasta93

WARNING!!!! i just did it for the droid 2
it dosent work right. the screen size messes up with all the text and the lock screen so we will have to wait

    • Jeremy

You shoulda read the comments and you would have known this

I wish Kellex would update this post so D2 owners stop trying the zip file until someone else can release it.

Meh… installed it on my DX, but no animation when I turn it off. :(

    • http://davesdroid.blogspot.com NadTwist

Nevermind… I had to change the animation speed in “Spare Parts” back to normal. Doesn’t work if set to FAST. :P

I get to this command here: cp /data/local/tmp/framework-res.apk /system/framework/
And it tells me its not found. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong or why its not working? Should I just type reboot and retry?
    I have a D2

What part of “Be careful D2 owners” didn’t make sense?

Check my comment below, I created a new framework-res.apk for the D2 and it may help fix it without having to SBF.

      • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

yah dude i seen that. i wasnt being serious. also i tried that and adb isnt working for me right now. i guess ill just wait til theres a zip for the d2 because obviously that zip isnt.

        • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

Sorry I didn’t know how to put it in a zip file. Hopefully someone else here
          can.

  • Icj217

I downloaded the .zip and installed clockwork recovery but i cannot get into recovery mode when i start my DX. anything i try it just goes thru the normal startup. any ideas?

  • Liam

    whats adb >.<

  • Finestgq1

    We want that for Thunderbolt.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

      wait for gingerbread.

  • http://www.facebook.com/steve0mac Steven Cornea

is there a easyer way to root GB with out having to go threw all the SBF. I got the stock verison and I really dont feel like having to flash then flash again and re do everything, ya know

  • Detailphreak

Jeebus, this is too much work for me (although it is cool). Guess I’m not too familiar to ADB.

    • DroidzFX

pay attention to the details. There is a zip you can download and flash. No need to touch ADB.

      • Detailphreak

        I’m un-rooted still, clockworkmod requires a root.

      • Jeremy

Only if you have a DX, currently there isn’t a zip file that works for the D2

  • Dantheman51sj

seems like a 90s tv animation when he turns it off

  • Wachutalkinbout

That’s nothing… been doing this on my OG droid for a month now thanks to the PE rom.

    • http://www.google.com/profiles/spneacy sneaced

This is the most irrelevant thing I’ve heard today.

      • Anonymous

It’s not irrelevant, it’s about the tube animation. If you’re going to criticize at least be correct and call him a showboating douche.

    DROID2 OWNERS!!!!!

    DO NOT FLASH THE ZIP

Your lock screen will be messed up and when you try to restore your backup the phone will be stuck at the Moto Logo. Now I have to SBF my phone

    • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

I recompiled this for the Droid 2, and it works flawlessly on mine. See my comment here: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/03/30/download-gingerbread-crt-screen-off-animation-for-droid-x-and-2/#comment-174992120

      • Jeremy

Ill try it out once i get my phone back to gingerbread, i just finished SBF-ing my phone back to stock Froyo and in the process of rooting it and installing recovery now

        • Nideda24

My D2 was doing the same thing, no need to sbf though, just wipe data and cache reboot. Poof, problem solved. You will have to setup all your settings and accounts again but at least you don’t waste time sbfing

          • Jeremy

After i tried to restore my nandroid backup i was stuck at moto logo

You could have just re-flashed the correct D2 framework.

  • Brdrhoppinpro

maybe im the only one, but where can we find that live wallpaper? im have a rooted TB but dont wanna try pushing gingerbread onto it yet but i want that wallpaper lol

  • Yo momma like it

    sweet

  • Max

I can’t stop turning the screen on and off. :-D

  • Anonymous

Even though I just took someone else’s work and crammed it into a zip, I still feel weirdly happy to see it on here.

Also, I doubt this’ll work flawlessly on the D2 as I assume there are some differences between the two frameworks.

  • Jadam6118

What wallpaper is that? I want it please.

    • The Observer

Uncle Jonathan’s corn cob pipe! It’s Light Grid Pro.

  • Portertm

Clockwork can’t open the zip and snorts the process. Any suggestions?

    • Portertm

Aborts, not snorts. F***ing iPad auto correct.

      • Tim242

        You can edit…

        • Portertm

          Yes, yes…

      • Anonymous

iPad <– that's your problem right there. ;)

    • Anonymous

      Corrupted? Try downloading agin.

      • Portertm

Yeah, did that and works fine now. :)

      • http://profiles.google.com/sriehl Steven Riehl

I tried downloading from about half the mirrors and all of them have the same md5sum and it failed for me. I just did the by-hand method.

  • Keithsmner

The animation on the X doesn’t look exactly the same as it does on on my droid with GB or on a nexus S. It looks better on my droid.

    • droydhead

like how? just curious, I think it looks and great and is really smooth on my X.

      • Anonymous

The image distorts with the tube effect, including discoloration down to a sliver of light before fading away. This looks a little different, not as much detail.

  • Aj9711

Flashed to my droid 2, it worked fine, but it changed the lock screen too, liked the original lock screen better.

    • http://twitter.com/jayzeroeee Joe

      Changed the lockscreen to what?

      • http://twitter.com/Nideda24 N. Davison

I am getting random errors, lockscreen is all messed up, a process keeps force closing…not good. D2

        • devin jones

Same here man. Says my sd is blank too. My lock screen is like worked dude

    • http://profiles.google.com/gar.homes Garland Homes

Flashed to my droid 2, and slowed everything to a crawl, the lockscreen looks upside down, and my phone started to get really hot (probably because some background process was crushing the cpu) NOT RECOMMENDED FOR D2 OWNERS.

      • Jeremy

Yeah….wish you would have posted this about 2 min ago lmao. I’m having the same problem. Good thing i did a backup before flashing this

      • Jeremy

My D2 is working fine now but the lockscreen is still messed up, it seems whenever i reboot with this GB leak the phone is slow as hell for about 5 min then is snappier then ever.

  • DroidzFX

My first news post contrubution ….I just teared up a little bit

  • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

Anyone tried this on a D2 yet?

    • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

Running a backup in recovery so I can make an attempt at hacking the framework-res.apk according to the original source. Will post back with results if this backup ever finishes. :)

      • Anonymous

Does not work. It will give the animation but it also messes with some other things on your phone. I heard there were some font problems and other small annoying things.

        • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

See my comment right below this. I took the framework-res.apk from the Droid 2 and changed only the boolean that disabled the screen off animation.

    • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

Decompiled and re-compiled the framework-res.apk on the Droid 2 and Droid R2D2. Put this on my phone using the ADB method, and confirm that it works (I have an R2D2).

      Droid 2 file: http://www.mediafire.com/file/6xobaadloevg9ug/framework-res_CRT_D2.apk
      R2D2 file: http://www.mediafire.com/file/edobeh6onnui6l5/framework-res_CRT_R2D2.apk

I don’t know what has to be done to make these a flashable .zip file, someone else can feel free to do so.

      • Adamladd

I keep getting errors on mediafire can you please host it on another site aswell?

        • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

Mediafire was down earlier, but it seems to be back up now.

      • wsfanatic

What differences did you notice in the lockscreen sliders? I can’t notice any difference on my D2.

        • Adamladd

the dx has no horizontal slider so it wont appear when you slide out your keyboard and alot of other issues appear too.

        • http://twitter.com/c_heuer Christopher Heuer

I meant the differences between the regular Droid 2 and the R2D2. I had already replaced the D2 lockscreen with the R2D2 version, so I just did both files since I had to anyway.

      • Tb110895

Can somebody please turn this into a flashable .zip
I had to sbf trying to do the ADB method

      • Tiptoptommy

took a couple tries but i finally got it working thanks. its sweet

Here’s the file as a zip. I have NOT tried it so don’t complain to me if it screws up your D2 but it should work.

The recompiled file worked on my D2.

  • PRALINES

I can’t seem to enter recovery… I bootstrap, then boot in to recovery, it turns off, but then it stays stuck at a black screen. any help?

    • http://profiles.google.com/sriehl Steven Riehl

The Droid 2 bootstrap recovery works with the Droid X GB leak

  • droydhead

Make sure you have window and transition animation speeds set to normal, otherwise it wont work.

    • droydhead

that’s only if you’re using spare parts to change the speeds..

  • Vselca

Theres an app that does this flawlessly and you dont have to be rooted:

    • PRALINES

      ?… no.

  • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

    Sweet!

    Now to get Gingerbread installed…

  • Tim242

Applied the zip. Works great. Note: You have to have animations enabled in your display settings for it to work.

  • http://www.facebook.com/steve0mac Steven Cornea

could I install this in recovery?

    • droydhead

yes.. just make sure you flash the zip file, you dont need the apk. It works great.

      • http://www.facebook.com/steve0mac Steven Cornea

        awwwwwsome, thanks

    Your X seems slow.

I just rooted my Thunderbolt and put on VirusRom in there. its awesome but I wish it included this

  • FargoGeek

CyanogenMod 7 on my OG Droid has this as an option built it. CyanogenMod settings>Display>Screen-off animation. I am not sure about the builds for other handsets.

    • Anonymous

This is default on the GPA builds for Droid (Peter Alfonso)

    • Anonymous

Default for Project Elite as well.

This is great… it’s what the build was missing.

  • Mth2134

Mr. Alfonso incorporated this in his gpa14 builds from source for the og. Probably one of the coolest features that isn’t detrimental to the os. Nice play on the dx screen.

  • http://twitter.com/yohankenobi yohankenobi

Just installed the zip and it works like a charm!

    • Anonymous

      Ahh .zip added!

  • Socal_jnunez

theres a zip file now just down load and install using d2 boot
also if you have spare parts leave windows animations
    in normal speeds
that credit goes to android forums

  • Risenequinox

haha thats sweet! any idea when gingerbread will officially release?
