Tip: Force HTC Thunderbolt to Use 3G Only, Turn Off 4G

If you needed another tip to help you save battery life on your brand new HTC Thunderbolt, then this might be the best one yet.  For those of you not in a 4G LTE area, or who just don’t need those kinds of speeds, this will tell your phone to stay on 3G and quit the constant searching of 4G towers.  This tip first popped up in our inbox last Friday, so I apologize for not sharing it sooner.

Instructions:

Dial: *#*#4636#*#*

Then choose “Phone information”:

Change preferred network to “CDMA auto (PRL):

Back out and enjoy your 3G-only phone!

To turn 4G LTE back on, repeat the steps and choose “CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto.”

Cheers 4n1m4l and zeeds6!

Has anyone downloaded Gesture Search, searched for ’4G Settings’ and tried to disable it this way? I remember when this allowed you into the hidden menu on the HTC Incredible.

  • Nismo1010

    what wallpaper are you using?

Good to see another bandaide has been found to work around a piss-poor power management implementation. Bionic will be the way to go so hopefully all you non-rooting T-Bolt users can trade up or return now.

    • Smtxom

No it doesnt. I just did this and it didnt require a restart at all.

yeah I think to that iphone batteries are waaay better to! Iphones just work…lol and are all around smoother operation

Wow, I would’ve thought they would have a simple toggle for that….. I see a developer niche for this phone

  • Krb721

You aren’t lying but taking second hand info is just as bad. I work in an IT department at a hospital and configure multiple Androids, iPhones, and Blackberry’s weekly. The battery issues are the same on most all devices. Your iPod touch is not checking in with cell towers, using GPS, widgets, backround syncs…

Just imagine if there was no Li-ion and still were using NiCa. Eventually there will be a breakthrough with batteries and you will just find something else to complain about.

Bring jumper cables with you when you actually want to use this phone.

    • Dshudson

remember if your not using your TB to make a call.. shut it off, who cares if people are calling.. but remember when checking your voice mail, don’t do it with speaker, that wastes batteries too lol

But really for all the benefits this phones has.. i don’t mind charging a bunch. I say “run everything all at once”

I figure if my thunderbolt battery can last me 5-6 hours inbetween charging im doing well. my original droid didnt have a long battery life. I was lucky if it lasted 6 hours between charges.

I’m really beginning to wonder if people know how to charge the device…. Everyone complained about the OG Droid’s battery as well, so much so that I purchased an extra batter with the device when I got it….. Never even used it. If you will start these things off on a proper charge cycle, and that means let it charge until the green light comes on with this device, not just till it looks like the meter is full on the status bar. I’ve been seeing all day battery life and thats with wifi on. I cannot speak however for 4g as I’m not in a market that was announced.

If we aren’t in a 4G market, doesn’t the radio keep searching for the signal, if the phone is told to do so. Doesn’t the switch in this article stop the radio from searching, thus extending the battery life?

LOL@Michael… The A5 chip is not a revolutionary chip.. Only will enable dual core processing for the iphone5.. Android will be on quad core by late november… Same routine from apple.. 1 or 2 features most phones already have and less technical people believe it’s the greatest invention ever bc an apple is on it.

    • Guest9135

yes possibly more features but still way out performed… just like apples laptops. Mac specs alone they are lower yet performance wise far superior then a pc with the same specs!!!!

    they need a 1 click method – off/on – for this.

There is a MUCH EASIER way to do this. Download PhoneInfo. It takes you right there. I live in a LTE area but I noticed my battery lasts a lot longer w/o 4G.

  • http://twitter.com/Odinist Matt Evans

Or just download an app called “Phone info,” which gives you a GUI for stuff like this.

  • Porno

I leave 4G on all the time and I am getting about 10 hours a day from my Thunderbolt with moderate usage.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jim.goldsmith James Goldsmith

do you live downtown in a 4G market location?

  • Dbrownjr

you can also use the #228 to cut off 4g… you just have to remove the battery to get it back to 4g

    • http://twitter.com/acles003 acles003

I read that *228 will corrupt the SIM Card on the Thunderbolt and then you will need a new SIM.

  • Kfath1978

I don’t understand why they can’t get the battery life to last w/ these “smart phones.” Its really annoying. Why don’t they focus on battery life more?? To me its about pointless to spend hundreds of dollars on a phone that has to be charged all the time. I have a D2 and had to get a extended battery after the first week. Here is a idea….why not put a extended battery on these phones in the first place?? Really stupid and really annoying.

    • HolyGrail

1)Because not everyone wants a big phone like you.
      2) Batteries, (like harddrives) are still a bottlenecks in the tech world. An until they can fined a way to make a bearkthrough to overcome this bottleneck, maybe you should just buy a flip phone and be happy with it.

      • Jap

Hey you, get off Kfath1978′s back, he or she is actually making a great point. In this day and age where technology is the selling point for these phones the battery is last thing we should be worring about. The last time i checked this was a free forum to deliver great points like they did, so YOU go get a flip phone ediot

        • Anonymous

that really didnt make much sense. hes not complaining about the phone, why would he get a new one?

          • Jap

My point exactly. He just wanted to be insultive to the person making the point about the battery. All this technology the manufacturers are boasting, a battery issue show be shameful to have. Just saying

          • Anonymous

well to each his own. I don’t consider it “an issue” to charge my phone every night (or the next morning if I forget, it does last longer than a day).

I honestly don’t think the manufactureres consider it that big of a deal either.

I mean, he said “a phone that has to be charged all the time”. I’m gonna go out on a limb and call this a hyperbole. How much is “all the time” ?

          • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

Actually manufactures consider it a very big deal. They are spending hundreds of millions of dollars every year trying to advance battery technology. Unfortunately developing a scientific breakthrough isn’t a matter of simply spending money.

          • jw

thats way too much money to be spending on “battery research”. seriously, use the $$$ on more (obviously more important) issues. hello!!!

          • Sapiencallen

no it really isn’t too much right to spend a battery research all the experts in every field of science believe that better batteries are going to be the most important discovery in the next 100 years

          • Ashley

Like every 2 hours. At least with mine. Its ridiculous. I’m going to try this tip today and if it doesnt work, im going back to team iPhone! lol

        • Anonymous

Dude, whats with all the ranting and raving about, Kfath1978 and Tbolt made good sense and good comments. that’s whats this forum is all about helping other members with technical issues and identifying them as well as coming up with good fixes and spreading the word.

I’ve been a member ever since day 1 of DL, and we need to hold restraint and rally read what someone is saying. I for know for a fact, that if the OEM’s really want to have the issue solved there are batteries out there that can extend life, and handle the constant synching of a device. I;ve personaly used military batteries that are the size of a pea the can charge night scopes for thermal and range target acquisition lasers that last for months and those items use a hell of alot more power than a Droid device.

The batteries are out there and not that expsensive, maybe Kellex can shed some light on this issue This would be a good topic for one of his insiders to address maybe. :)

          • Jap

Hey, I’m on your side, and as Kfath1978 and Tbolt. Its that ediot Holygrail I had to jump in on spitting that crap about bottleneck n harddrives. I totally agree man, good topic for discussion.

Look all I was saying was what is the point of having a smartphone that does this and that but cant get something as simple as battery life right? We all spend lots of money on these things and its silly to have to buy a extended battery to use for the day. We already spend to much.

          • Jap

            I totally agree with

          • Snrdos_Droid_X

I feel your pain about battery life but I have come to think of smart phones as a really small personal computer. The more I do on those the faster my battery life drops. It’s a curse to be tethered to wall socket or car charger all the time but the freedom to have the web at my fingers all day is my trade off. I think the extended life batteries are great and they would be nice as low cost initial upgrade….as in I choose which battery and back I want in the store. That way people who want slimmer phones can have them and people like you and me can have a thicker phone with better battery life.

          • A1507372

If battery technology where simple, phones would last days and electric cars would have 500+ mile ranges. Fact is, state of the art battery technology is not simple. Compare today’s batteries to something from 10 years ago…the technology is rapidly improving.

        • jw

lol you misspelled “idiot”… awesome insult, epic fail :D

      • TBolt

        Hey Guys,

The battery fix was simple for me. I was about to go return my phone on Sunday because since I first got the phone on Thursday, my battery wouldn’t last more than 3 hours and that’s with very, very light use. I couldn’t take it, I almost got the iPhone. I read up on some forums and fixed my battery issue.

I looked at what was eating my battery (Menu-Settings-About Phone-Battery-Battery Use). Having a Droid X first, I knew the display should be the main battery eater. But above the battery there was something called “TVMtServiceStart” or something like that. It has something to do with the Blockbuster app. I guess it syncs the whole Blockbuster Library, cuz when I plugged my phone in the computer it had atleast 100 DVD Covers loaded. I never even opened the Blockbuster app, so I found it weird.

All I did was open the app, download the update, went to settings and turned off all the syncs. There was 1 or 2.

I also downloaded the Juice Defender Beta, which is free and have left it on the stock settings, I just pressed enable.

Now my battery lasts me the whole day on moderate to heavy use, (3 email accounts, facebook, texting allllll day and a few calls here and there, then gym and play music for atleast 2 hours) The most I charge is 30 minutes and that’s when I shower and change for the gym.

Keep in mind I live in LA so it’s 4G all day long. Hopefully this helps some of you out. Now I wouldn’t even think about trading this in, it’s the best phone I’ve ever had.

        • Anonymous

you text all day? sick brah

        • Anonymous

thats the third time i’ve heard blockbuster is responsible for the draining. Some said that if you update it and go to the settings and tell it to “disable movie updates” that helps too.

        • Djwoods2

if i just remove the blockbuster app, will that be just as good of a solution

          • Ackilles85

You aren’t allowed to remove it since its a stock app from Verizon. Although if you were to root it then you are good to go!

  • Michael

puhahhaha! this is so pathetic! i can’t wait to get rid of my droid and get the iPhone 5! battery issue on a phone, especially with what smartphones can do today is just unacceptable!

    • m6droid

My friends with iPhones all have the same battery issues. Grass is always greener and such.

      • Brian

My iPhone 4 does really well on battery life, infact. He has a point. My phone will easily last me all day and then some with heavy-moderate use.
Really would like to get a Thunderbolt but battery life for me is unacceptable right now.
Will have to weigh options, for sure! The thunderbolt seems amazing.

      • Michael

oh i beg to differ! and you’re lying through your teeth there buddy. I don’t have iPhone yet, but do have iPod touch and can easily last at least 7 to 9 hours with heavy usage, plus my friends with iPhone never had once complained about their battery life issue.

        • m6droid

Good for your friends. My coworkers here constantly keep theirs plugged in because they have to recharge constantly. My girlfriend’s 3G lasted 3/4 of a day. My best friend and his wife switched to an Atrix and experience better battery life than the 3G models. Perhaps the 4G got better, I will have to ask my friend how hers does. Point is, battery technology vs. phone technology isn’t up to par with each other. Some people use their phones more than others hence the battery usage differences.

I’ve got my Incredible to last an entire day + without a recharge. Yes, HTC is bad with battery, but there are little tricks to fix them.

        • Guest

And so are you, I’ve got a 4th Gen iPod Touch and any heavy use murders the battery. Maybe we’ve got different concepts of heavy use, but if I’m playing any games for 3-4 hours then I’m looking at a 20% battery, which is pretty similar to my Thunderbolt.

          • Michael

i bet if we do battery life comparison with iPhone, TB would fall short by a mile!

          • Anonymous

I’m not sure.. you have to compare apples to apples.. since the iphone is pushing so little information, turn off all of your syncs, and make your widgets manual updates, I bet they would be equal

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IDGUZI4TI22VNIG3QKXSKDQWVM Chris

you see now that’s the point isn’t it? why allow all these capabilities and features and lack on battery life?

I mean come on, would you buy a new car that comes with all the latest technology and horsepower with such short battery life that you would have to constantly jump start or carry extra pack of battery in your trunk? No person in the right mind would invest on such a thing! yet here you guys are defending their flaws and justifying it! i bet if this was the iPhone, you Android fanboys would be all up on their face.

          • Purcelllj

Instead of making a meaningless comparison to a car and carrying around jumper cables and whatever that shit was, you should make a comparison that makes sense. Such as, would you buy a car that has all the extras and is super fast and custom built to your own deepest desires even if it didn’t get the BEST gas mileage? The answer is: hell yes. Yes I would. But chris if you want to go buy a hybrid with an ipod/iphone hookup then you do that and enjoy because its a free country. But please try to think about what your saying in these forums before you let your fingers start keying the delivery of your ignorant rants. Sometimes the android vehicle is too much for some to handle and they want a more smooth ride with limited functionality. Thank God iphone exists for those people. Also people ipod touch cannot be entered in the race with devices that are actually hooked up to a cell phone network. Let’s just try to stretch our brains to understand the technology instead banging our heads into it.

The iPhone 4 has the best battery life in the smartphone market today. The Droid X and other Moto phones are on its heels, but HTC phones are typically bad.

Android doesn’t have to be the best at everything. This doesn’t have to be a dick-measuring contest. You win some, you lose some.

        • Anonymous

Id say my droid x gets better bat life than my iphone 4 and my droid is my personal and iphone is work.. I use my personal way more fyi.. no I don’t use task killers

I hope you’re leaving Android for an iPhone for a better reason than that….

      • Michael

Ameil, of course! iOS is far much consistent, reliable, and responsive than this clunky 2.2, or every other glitchy versions. Plus its getting A5 chip amongst other things, i can’t wait!

        • surf2

kids joking, ios still doesnt even know what a widget is let alone it took them 4 generations to change a simple wallpaper

          • Michael

so you think a widget is enough for u to stay with Android? a wallpaper change? you ever had your hands on Apple and learn what it can do?

          • Scotty96

So why are you here? Like what you like…leave others alone.

          • surf2

yes i have an ipod touch and mbp, but android is far superior to apple on the phone, apple updrages like 2 things when they have a new generation phone. android 1 ups them on everything.

What’s batter life? Is that how long your pancakes last?

        • Anonymous

You’re a troll becuase the iphone is far from the best for battery life.

With my Droid X I can go 3 days with the extended battery.

You’re a troll even if you don’t mention the iPhone.

I was called an Apple fanboy because I said I was satisfied with my Droid X’s battery life under 3G as opposed to the Thunderbolt’s shitty 4G battery life.

Unless you’re acting like a completely mindless Fandroid, you probably shouldn’t even look at the comments, they will just make you angry.

          • Anonymous

            did you read his posts?

He didn’t “mention” the iphone, he said “puhahhaha! this is so pathetic! i can’t wait to get rid of my droid”

… on a website called droid-life… that’s elementary trolling. It’s not-even-trying trolling. It’s what trolling was 5 years ago. People need to learn how to do it subtlely…

          • Michael

its funny how you’re saying its an elementary trolling when i’m simply stating facts. Droid had its run for me while iPhone wasn’t available on VZW, but with iPhone 5 right around the corner I’m ready to move on to a device that started it all and what’s still considered as best smartphone as of today!

          • Jameson23

iphone 5 around the CORNER?!!? LOL…your post was 10 months ago, and in 10 months from now, you will STILL be waiting (in my opinion).

          • Michael

I don’t let these mindless comments and replies get to me. Let these folks stick to their Androids and see how they will feel a year later when everything starts to lag, or when iPhone just keeps on consistently gets better with meaningful functionality and upgrades! Like I said, I can’t wait til I get the iPhone 5 so I don’t have to come to this site to see if there’s anything worth reading regarding my Droid 1, which is pretty much at the end of its life and usefulness!

    • Wquin67

Oh wait I can change out my battery on my droid phone. Can you do that with an Iphone?….I think not. I can also store things to an SD card and remove it. Can you remove anything with an Iphone…I think not again. Maybe you should go to an Iphone forum when they all can talk about how great the phone are, cause those of us with droids know better.

      • Michael

uh that’s because they’ve installed a battery that lasts significantly! I rather have longevity of battery life rather than spending more money to swap out battery, which is inconvenient in major way! And for the SD card, who needs extra storage when iPhone comes with 32GB?

        • Wquin67

What you fail to see is that if there is ever a problem with my battery I can go out and buy a new one and replace it myself. On the Iphone if there is ever a problem with the battery you can pay them to crack the phone open and replace it. Nice that you pay more for the Iphone with 32gb, my new thunderbolt has 8gb installed, and 32 gb sd card that I can take out at a whim and use it on any computer that has a sd card reader, or even a usb port (you figure that one out).
But maybe just maybe you might also get lucky and get an Iphone that does not make you hold it in the right spots in order to stay on a call. Also enjoy your app store that only allows apps apple approves of, oh and even more fun rooting the phone. Yep the Iphone is just all that and a bag of chips.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IDGUZI4TI22VNIG3QKXSKDQWVM Chris

whats the point of having a 32 gb sd card when you cant even utilize to its full capacity? not all apps are able to use sd card’s storage space so there’s a major drawback! and as for the battery on iPhone and other Apple products… you know how much research they do in scoping out the best battery out in the market today and how they can best utilize it on their devices? google search all about their battery longevity and almost every experts will confirm that the internal battery in the iPhone will last significantly and will beat any Android devices out there today! and as for antenna issue, who ever holds their phone in a death grip manner? now i’m not saying iPhone is flawless, but let’s get real. battery issue shouldn’t even exist, or be the main setback. more than anything, it should be the main focus point before bragging about how its a 4G and what features it has cause w/o battery not lasting that long, everything else don’t mean sh*t!

          • Wquin67

Chris you do make a good point about battery issues, and this is a problem with all smart phones it would seem anymore. Everyone has issues with how long the battery last before having to recharge it, and that is something that changes on how the person uses the phone. If you spend your time on the phone running a bunch of apps, and playing games or what not then of course your battery is only going to last a few hours. Really what do you expect from anything that uses a battery, go to your car and leave the lights on with the engine off and see how long that battery last. If you are a heavy user then buy a battery that fits your needs as these phones are made for the causal user use, not to replace your home computer.
As to the antenna issues with the iphone, and the famous deathgrip…this comes down to why should I have to hold my phone in any way besides the way I want to…that is a big fail for apple. While not all apps can use the sd storage, there are more and more that can, plus it makes it easier for music storage, and other files. So while you might not be able to put every app on there it is still a plus to have it where you can use it on any computer. Also with the iphone you have to use itunes in order to add music and video to the phone, which would mean that you also have to use their player on the phone, and maybe some people like not having a choice in what they can and cant have on a phone but I for one like having a choice. Also the app on the Iphone are limited to what apple will allow to be on there, and there again I like having a choice in my apps and not having a company treat me like a child and tell me what I do and dont need.

          • Pd Howelll

haha Wait til 4G iPhone comes out, see how good your iPhone battery life is then. 4G crushes battery, its just the way it is. Has nothing to do with Droid vs. IPhone, anything with a 4G chipset has terrible battery life while on 4g, plain and simple. Tbolt on 3g lasts a very very ling time, as with both EVOs. So just wait iPhone fans, with great speed comes one major drawback even u can’t avoid

  • Ace87

Anyone know how to update roaming capabilities on the Thunderbolt? I tried *228 like it always has been but it won’t connect. Does it do it automatically now or is it a different number?

    • Pooch

because it utilizes SIM, it won’t respond to the *228 anymore, I am told.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=551490627 Dan Allen

Turn the phone off then back on. When it reboots it will collect the new towers and new signals.. if any.

  • MK17

It would pretty pretty cool if your phone just stayed in 3g mode then turned on 4g when you started doing things that require more bandwidth. So maybe it kicks on 4g when you open up your browser and such.

  • Anonymous

I need the 3G+EvDO option. I don’t live in 4G and there are plenty of spots where I work, where only 1x is available. So this won’t work for me :(

does anyone know if you make this change will you still be able to do Voice and Data at the same time? I doubt it but had to ask. voice and data at the same time has been a nice feature for me..

Are people finding this necessary in the 4G markets?

  • Anonymous

When they come out with a 4G toggle switch, it will be a huge help. I have full LTE signal in most places where I live, but it’s still draining the battery when I don’t need to use it.

I found this yesterday and it really helps on saving the battery – Big Time. There is an app in the Android Market called Phone Info by SC@Taiwan that saves the dial pad part of the process…

Let’s all hope this is just the growing pains of it being the first 4G LTE phone on the market. Hopefully Moto and HTC’s next 4G offering work out the power kinks.
