Video: HTC Thunderbolt Hands-on and Walk-through

We’ve had the HTC Thunderbolt for a good 5 days now and decided to whip up this quick walk-through to get you all up to speed on this 4G LTE device from Verizon.  Just to be clear up front, we love this phone even if it lacks a dual-core processor.  The speed is up there with any other device we’ve ever used, feels incredible in the hand (even if it is heavy), has a beautiful exterior, and performs extremely well on HTC’s Sense 2.0.  Enjoy.

and what video chat can we use ??

    • project.in.process

i use Tango. works fine. or Yahoo Video chat with its messenger service

  • tomNasty

Should we put a task killer on this phone?? i heard they do more bad than good

    • Anonymous

I haven’t used a TK in about a year, I find they do more to slow down a phone than they help speed it up. With the amount of internal storage and RAM in the T-Bolt, I don’t see any need for it.

  • Grassmoney

Download ” network. Mangelow” you can turn off the 4g antenna. My battery last a long time now. This is for those of use who don’t have 4g in our areas yet. This phone is awesome. Way faster than Droid x.

  • Glpd46

for everyone with the weird number coming up on text messages…..mine was doing that so i went to vzw. the checked the system and it looked fine so we did a battery pull and it fixed the problem….they said it was a glitch with the activation process. just pull the battery and try again it fixed mine.

I’ll wait for the Moto Bionic, thank you very much!

    thats better…

    • KSChris

I hope you enjoy the locked bootloader!

      • newHTCfan

TB is locked there chief. Still got it rooted though. Bionic is reportedly not gonna be but I will believe it when I see it

I’ll wait for the Moto Bionic, thank you very much!

  • Howsthis

why would anyone want this if they could get the new evo 3d?

    • Brian

Why would anybody want Sprint? LTE spanks their 4G speeds.

      • Anonymous

Because it’s cheaper and you get unlimited texts and calling. And only like 1/3 of the population has access to LTE anyway.

        • Brian

Serious question, non sarcastic. Verizon just announced a lot more additional “on” spots for LTE today, What is sprints “4G” Coverage compared to Verizons? I think (if it hasn’t happened already) Verizons 4G will be outpacing Sprints in no time.

      • Igor

        1) HTC EVO 3D will isolate twin cameras to produce the firsts 180 degree panoramic photo at 5mp resolution. (Option will be in sense UI)
        2) HTC EVO will produce the first ever 10mp photo on cell phone by using what is called paralax photo capture (each camera will capture an image and over lay it to produce 10mp photo) (Once again tap on 10mp photo)
        3) Light sampling will be independent of each CMOS sensor to produce what will be close to night vision capture (Night Owl)
        4) EVO 3D Hollywood, EVO 3D is only device on the market with next generation Qualcomm processor’s with built in DRM. EVO 3D will support all digital streaming content (Netflix, Hulu, and other independent sites with DRM subscriptions.)
        5) YouTube 3D part of the EVO 3D Hollywood pack.
        6) True 4G, EVO 3D will be the industry first (LTE+WimaX) device. Sprint has plans for all 4G devices to be backwards compatible and be able to support (Wimax+LTE) (Shift/Epic/EVO/etc.)
        7) Will be the first none Nexus device to launch with Google 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
        8) Worlds first qHD 3D display on a 4.3in screen (Pixel Density Classified)
        9) Industry first dual channel 1gig DDRRAM and with active 4gig tri-channel ROM (5gig total Ram with unlimited ROM as SDcard will act as more like a HD drive)
        10) That is just a few of the industry first that will be presented on EVO 3D launch.
There will be no thunder stolen, no spot light stolen, and no industry first stolen from HTC EVO 3D gram for gram this is undisputed superphone.

We will over clock the cpu, gpu, and memory to a point of embarrassment. Scorpion has had no problems testing at 2.0ghz, Andrenio x2 clocks, memory 50% clock. I know this would come at a cost to battery life, but larger battery will handle it better then current EVO. A phone launching the same time as EVO 3D will be irrelevant for at least one year. I think it best for companies to slow there roll and go with the flow and stay stock for the time being.
I wanted to launch EVO 3D July 4th for obvious reasons, but now it will be in June in celebration of EVO 4G one year anniversary.

There are no fps caps period. vid capture for 720p/1080p/3d720p/1080p/video playback of POV2D/3D/ H2.64 etc movies/Streaming 1080p/720p via DLNA/android games.

Stressed test all the above formats, load was nominal, need for fps caps non issue.

I wanted to express my appreciation to all who have been posting with excellent ideas/concerns with respect to next generation EVO. The show will answer most of the burning question out there, but remember, the cat is not out of the bag yet! So keep up with your wish list as we did with the original EVO almost a year ago. I am positive we will be working on fit and finish until launch day.
I am still packing spread sheets, data reports, and presentation for the big show. I am sure you all can understand this is a busy time. I’ll be away for a bit during that period. I’ll still throw out some bites from my EVO 4G of course, but were confident the show will have most of the important questions answered.

I will be focusing more on the technical aspects. There is no way a person could stand on stage and talk about DLNA for 20+min. and cover other important aspect of the device.

Let’s quash some rumors up front. The screen will be 4.3in Qhd 3d screen. The actual form factor of the EVO 3d will measure up a bit smaller. Good thing for those still wearing jeans with small pockets. We couldn’t shrink the over all size that much, because we understand that people want protective cases and we didn’t want this to interfere with the touch screen. The feeling is we have a good balance, where you guys feel as though it’s just one big screen in your hand, but very portable. I can say it works really well when playing around with the 3D camera’s. Move the camera’s in and out when video recording a person face, it does an excellent job of making the face appear as though it is protruding out of EVO 3D’s qhd screen. (Weird, especially if it’s Dan H)

Big news that nobody is talking about is DLNA and DRM.
DRM: EVOtees have been clammering for Netflix, Hulu, and Blockbuster. You all know that it’s been slow going due to DRM issues. This will not be the case with EVO 3D. Scorpion chipset and some back door work not only enabled this, but polished to a point of being effortless. DRM validation is instantaneous. You go to your favorite Digital content provider, handshakes with DRM on your EVO 3D and your done. Login to your account, your streaming! I thought it was a load of you know what with original EVO. Original EVO will have this feature as well.

DLNA: This technology has been out for some time, but I feel sense UI 2.0 has been able to put the polish it needs to shine. The DRM issue resolved, DLNA will not only allow for digital content to stream to EVO 3D, but to any DLNA certified HDTV/PC monitor/DLNA Mobile device. I am sure your asking what does that mean and how does it apply to us? (Example) Sitting in a local coffee shop, your friend is sporting HTC View tab and you HTC EVO 3D. You ask if your friend has seen this movie.(No) You say start up HTC Media Link and we can check out together. Both of you are watching the same movie on your “OWN” device having a cup of Joe.
HTC Media link will be incorperated in both View and EVO. So far we have tested and ran. 720p/1080p/BMP/GIF/JPEG/XVID/3GP/WMV/MPEG4/H.263/H.264 video formats and Audio: WMA/AAC/MP3/ACC+
So far we are just working on the GUI for improved user interface. Functionality certified, and expected at launch.

Root: I know there is concern out there that “I don’t want to have to root my EVO to do XYZ” Every effort is being made to include everything possible up front for EVO 3D right out of the box. (Netflix, Hulu, Full hdmi mirroring, and HTC Media Link) I still need acknowledge Dev community. They have not only kept EVO 4G fresh, vibrant, but more importantly relevant. We want to respect the efforts of the DEV community and honor why android OS is about choice. That is why EVO 3D will not be shipping with a boot loader lock.

Bluetooth: larger library, we herd, we listen, and we going to deliver. (fingers crossed) We are in the process of setting up a library targeting specifically for k/b, mouse, and yes game pads. I mentioned in an early post w/new sense UI 2.0 EVO 3D will be more at home than ever in landscape mode. We have simultaneously used bluetooth k/b mouse combo with DLNA in the back ground. You can look up Netflix movies w/mouse/kb and stream it to DLNA HDTV. We’ve been listening.

I know on the thread somebody mentioned they would like more on board memory cause XYZ phone has 16gig on board memory. Cost is important factor to consider, because we know we need to make EVO 3D appealing to everyone. Most devices with a 16gig, 32gig, have the option of a removable sdcard. DRM improvements has allowed us to enhance app2sd. Once again, were early in the game as silicon improves, it’s a simple matter of swapping out die’s. So there is a potential of improvement, if we can do it, and keep cost to the consumer in mind, it will happen. I am sure you all have herd of 128gig sdcard and were working on getting that implemented for original EVO through either the Dev community or OTA. EVO 3D can’t talk about that.

fps lock: Not on EVO 3D. Dual core processors, larger battery, more efficient Adreno GPU made this a non issue.

Last but not least, on a lighter note, EVO 3D printing money? Not in our life time! Sprint does have some great programs supporting EVO 3D, like $125 dollars off to port over a new cell number, premier customer program, and mail in rebate. That is about as close EVO 3D will get to printing money!

        • Brian

That reply was a bit ridiculous from a mere (healthy) rebuttal reply that I made. So while you’ve clearly done your homework; it’s a 3D phone. Sounds like you’ve been having wet-dreams about a device with such capabilities, and that is fine. It will be outpaced and outdated in months just like every-other Android Offering.

You clearly sound like the type to choose a devices features over a devices network. YES! I know, Dan Hesse’s network is “so much” cheaper. Not really when you consider the options and coverages. If you’re paying a premium for a smart-phone I don’t think you’ll care much about ten extra bucks a month. Many Android users as is, buy phones off contract getting the latest up to date smartphones. (Not all, so don’t jump me on this)

Ok, you’ve made solid points on the EVO 3D giving even the most tech anal crowed reason to wake up sticking to their bedsheets apparently. However, I’m talking NETWORK here. Verizon’s LTE network walks Sprints WIMAX network down the park. It’s built to handle a congested network better, and most importantly it has/will have the back-haul. Verizon made the CORRECT move to go to LTE when others took their merely advanced networks and slapped “4G” on there. Sprint only went the route it did to claim “first”. Look where they want to head now.

OK – Now you’re going to cry “well Sprint works better in my area” OK, I’ll give it to you again Anna Boy.
In “considerably equal” networks, in a given location, at a given time, when both parties are eating dinner from their mistresses dinner table – I’d still take the Verizon Network over Sprint. PROVEN reasons and my own.

I wouldn’t be so humble about a non-bootlader lock, If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I just like being a pessimist. Always gives me more to be surprised about ;-)

          • Igor

Brian dude I was just messing with you, the above reply was a copy paste from some guy on Phandroid. Even I don’t understand a lot of stuff that guy posted on phandroid I think it originally came from a developer for EVO3D. The specs and all do look great. I don’t have any experience with Sprint I am happy with Verizon but I have heard it’s not too bad.
I will definitely check this phone out though.

Strangest thing. My little bro got the ‘bolt too. When he texted me the first time, it came up with some crazy 9-digit number. Then even more strange, he stayed at my place last night, and I got woke up at about 3am with lightning and thunder crashing what seemed like right next to my house. Anyone from Columbus OH can verify I’m not BSing. I think weird things happen when you get two Thunderbolts together guys.

I had the same thing with the numbers showing up on my wife’s BB Storm 2. Then I reset her phone thinking it was her error and not mines. Lol. I haven’t had that happen again so maybe it was a one time occurence. Hope so anyway.

    • Chris Nimon

lol, I believe you. I live just outside of South Bend Indiana and there was definitely lightning and thunder yesterday.

    • Anonymous

I had the same thing happen with the crazy phone#, I have a friend that works at VZW and he said it has been an issue with some of the T-Bolts, but usually corrects itself within a day or two.

I am also having an issue with not being able to access my internal storage, only my SD card, anyone else?

    • steve0617

I had that, plus my LTE didn’t stay on even though I’m in good coverage. A pull of the battery and the SIM card, a few minute delay while grabbing some coffee, and then it all worked fine once it restarted. Has worked fine (three days) ever since.

  • Brian32

What clock and battery widgets are being used on the home screen?

  • Anonymous

Anyone having issues with 3G disappearing? It will go away and then come back, but while it’s gone i cant do anything (make calls, internet, market)….it does it when i try to use mobile hotspot (which isnt working on my computer either) then i have to restart it so 3G will come back, any ideas??

    • steve0617

Pull the battery and LTE SIM card one time. I was having flaky LTE connection issues when I first got it. Let it sit for a few minutes then reinstall/restart. That fixed my one time problems.,

I just got this phone today and I like the speed, however this being my first droid phone (and coming from an Envy Touch) I just feel lost. The manual doesn’t tell you anything, I might have to go to my verizon store just to get an explanation on the thing. I like the phone but I’m just so confused…

    • Eazy

Sorry guy but its a smartphone for a reason…

  • http://twitter.com/ericalj erica

Not having any issue with the battery (can go most of the day depending my own usage, etc)…it’s actually better than the extended battery that I had on my droid x. The 4g is crazy fast and awesome. And I tested that I could browse the web while on the phone even in 3g.

The issue I AM having however, is people I am text messaging are telling me the number it’s coming from is some really long number. A number way too long to be a phone number. Multiple people and texts, and they are all on different carriers. VZW was of no help Sunday morning though

    • http://twitter.com/Rob_toast Robert

take your battery out and restart your phone. I had the same problem the first day I had it

  • Glpd46

there must be some bad batteries out there. mine says 5 hours and 42 minutes unplugged. im at 78 percent. i am a pretty heavy user and dont pay any attention to power saving techniques. this blows away my dx. not to mention this sense 2.0 make the dx moto blur look like it was designed by fisher price. i dont even need to talk about speed…cant picture dual core being any faster, maybe in a test but not to the naked eye.

  • Tom

    What clock is that?

  • Anonymous

This is the fastest phone I have ever seen. Not even my Droid x could run a live wallpaper without the launcher slowing down. This phone runs it so smoothly. Another thing I’m impressed with is this phone runs the N64oid emulator much more smoothly.

  • scott62185

I definitely like my Thunderbolt, BUT the poor battery life is pretty much a deal-breaker! It is almost 1/2 what the battery life for the Droid X was for me (very roughly). That’s with doing a bunch of battery saving maneuvers too… And I will NOT buy that hugh extended battery they’re trying to seel-it ruins the beautiful form of the phone. Plus another $50-what a racket!

    • Dshudson

Wait until they actually let you use that front facing camera.. Think the phones battery sucks now lol..

      • Anonymous

You can use the front facing camera now.

    • Anonymous

There is an extended battery that’s the same size as the standard Thunderbolt battery. I’m probably going to pick one up soon.

  • Marcusrussell547

Man if u get a job and a girl your phone wont be used all day and your battery will last. And for the guy who said its not much better than the droid x your crazy even when i went to a 3g area it loaded way faster than the droid x. Mabey your broke and couldn’t afford one thats why your hating lol

    • Dshudson

I will say the speed of 4g is retardedy fast.. Blew me away…

      • Anonymous

LTE is so fast I don’t bother even connecting it to my home WiFi.

    • Joker

Must be a kid. I am a business man my smartphone is not a playtoy I need to use it…. you need to go back to school

  • Dshudson

I decided I don’t like HTC, I’m going back to my DX until something else comes out.. I love the 4G but there are to many things I don’t like about HTC and Thunderbolt, charging it every two seconds is one of them.. although shutting off GPS did help, it wasn’t enough.. I also hate you have to use menu when your in the web to find your your bookmarks.. it a bunch of little things the DX has, like the button for taking pictures, the fact I can’t answer the phone when i have my headphones on because the person on the other end can’t hear me, the phone must think the headphones have a mic or something..Thats to name a few Guess I’m just picky.

    • Joker

No I’m the same way there is just little things about this phone that I do t like…yea the phone is fast but every phone from this point out will be fast most will have lte too. The design quality is poor… sense itself is alright I guess

  • Brendan

i have a question, can you get more skins from htc sense.com or whatever?

  • http://twitter.com/sms_327 Steven Stanley

What is the name of that live wallpaper?

    • GLife

      Light Grid (Pro)

  • Wiz Khalifa

I love my thunderbolt. I had to charge mine twice today, so I can’t wait for the battery extender. I guess i’m a heavy user. Is anyone else having problems with swype autospacing?

    • Dshudson

yes.. I downloaded SlideIT and kind of like it better. Plus it works on the XOOM

    • Anonymous

I just went back to the version before the new one, and it works fine now..

  • http://twitter.com/hpizzy Hiral Patel

Seems likes its just a souped up EVO with new HTC Sense. I guess if I didn’t have an Android device and was purchasing my first device then this could be a contender. At this point the gains by replacing DX with TB are not worth equal to or more than the wait for a dual core device for myself.

    • Sandswoodward

You obviously havent touched the Thunderbolt.

    • Booboolala2000

The screen, sense and the speed of the os and the lte speeds were enough for me to dump my DX. So much more responsive. Doesn’t just randomly freeze up, and voice/data even on 3g.

    • Anonymous

By the time the bionic launches 4g pricing will be tiered AND expensive. And ill be locked in at 30 bucks unlimited. Can’t wait to laugh at you. Also, blur is unacceptable, as is an encrypted bootloader.

  • Anonymous

AAnyone else have a hiss in the background when making calls? It goes away if you turn on hearing aid mode.

    • Akira751

nope, no issues with call sound.

      • Joker

Alot of users reported thins on android forums too so your not alne and i find the call quality pretty bad on this thing the x was way better

  • Anonymous

Hey guys just a question to all who have one…i just got mine today…its awesome…i did order the verizon screen protectors also, lol, found them on ebay cheaper….but do i need them…i had a droid x…i know this doesn’t have gorilla glass but from putting it in my empty american eagle short pocket and normal use will the screen scratch easily???

    • Dshudson

I had the DX for 9 months, no protector no scratches, even dropped the phone a dozen times.. Thunderbolt 3 days and one scratch.. don’t even know how I did it.. I didn’t drop it.. strange..

    • steve0617

The actual 3 pack of screen protectors that Verizon sells as created for the Thunderbolt, does not actually cover the entire piece of glass. You either leave the buttons on the bottom exposed, or the top where the Verizon logo is under the earpiece.

  • Porschephile2k3

How’s the keyboard on this thing? Is it still the same keyboard that was ripped by XDA before or did HTC update with multi-touch?

i really don’t understand the battery complaints. I don’t see it. Maybe yall need to learn battery saving tips like me or maybe I’m one of the lucky ones that has a good ass Thunderbolt because I’m getting fine battery life.

Though it is being charged right now, I love my Tbolt. Best phone I ever had, just have to get that extended battery as soon as it becomes available. I literally lose about 15 to 20 percent an hour, and thats no youtube, a few calls, and minimal web browsing. If I used the phone like I used my droid x, it’d be dead in an hour. That extended batt cant come soon enough! I love the speed!

  • Geovento7

AMAZING PHONE “THUNDERBOLT” was worth the wait ive been able to upgrade for over a year & a half it was a looooong wait but thanx to Droid Life i was always hearing about the next Great phone & just couldnt budge on anything else so i kept waiting im coming from an LG DARE so this phone to say the least is very impressive

I’ve put Dungeon Defenders and NFS Shift on it and they both run beautifully. Smooth as silk and very nice sounding through the stereo speakers. Also, my battery life is just about an hour or two less than what I would get normally on my old original Droid. For the 4G and super-sized screen, it is a fair trade off for me. All those trashing the battery life probably don’t even own the phone.

      • Anonymous

Same here with the battery thing. Thanks for the input. :)

Battery is not great but it’s not horrible like everyone is saying…and I live in a 4g area

    • Anonymous

I’m sorry, what’s your definition of “not horrible?” I have this phone and love it but the battery life is KILLING me. I live in SoCal and am on 4G 90% of the time. I have Wi-Fi always off (unless I’m at home), disabled the majority of syncing, have the screen at 20% brightness and it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get more than 6 hours out of this thing. I am not a heavy user by any means, occasional phone call, mostly text messaging, and the occasional FourSquare and Facebook check in. Please educate me if I’m doing something wrong because I LOVE this phone otherwise.

One of the things that has fixed battery is updating the Blockbuster app and turning off updates after that. The initial release from Thursday has been updated since. It was drawing a lot of battery power for some reason, couldnt disable updating until new version was released. My battery went over 12 hours the last 2 days since.

        • Anonymous

Just updated the Blockbuster app (thanks for the heads up). I’m assuming when you say disable updates you mean Disable Movie Updates, right? I went ahead and did this and Force Stopped the application from running in the background. If this works and I can even get another hour of battery life I owe you a 6-pack of the finest brew on earth. Thanks Amp!

          Anyone else have any tips?

          • Amp8587

            Correct

          • AWP85

I’m trying this as well. Though I sit at a desk I can just sit with the charger on but I would like to see something come from this.

          • Tubuku01

download “phone info by taiwan” from the marketplace and disable lte when not using it. HUGE improvement in battery life.

          • AWP85

            trying that app now

          • AWP85

Quick question… does this mean i won’t get EVDO with cdma?

          • AWP85

            nevermind

      • Rayman411vm

I’m in LA….I’m just not experiencing what you are

      • Mylockandroid

you need to charge it, son.

      • John

Just an FYI, WiFi radio takes less battery than the 3G or 4G radios, so when you are at home, you’d benefit from enabling it.

got a case to improve my button functionality… much better. you can actually feel the pressing

  • Jay P

    the battery suck ass

    • Rayman411vm

It gets me thru an entire work day….its a great phone

      • Alvinm 77

Exactly. 9 hours for me. 6-7 heavy use. Battery is fine.

        • Jay P

maybe i should power cycle the phone tonight see if it works.

9 hours on a full charge. damn that is pretty good. that whole “terrible battery life” must have been just haters hatin’. my iphone only gets about 40 hours on a full charge.

          • cool

            awesome… no one here cares

          • Anonymous

@Jeff- So what? Thats nothing. My iPod touch gets about a week on a full charge. I didn’t realize pretending to be a phone drained so much battery power.

          • Anonymous

… the touch isn’t pretending to be a phone??

          • Glpd46

my iphone doesnt get that i think your a tool…….get a life.

          • Eric

I thought you said you weren’t coming to this site anymore?

          • fartbubbler

don’t be a butthole. move on.

          • angermeans

why do you come here? Take your iphone and go elsewhere. I mean I am all about good conversations with people that love all devices, but you sir bring nothing positive to the table. You just troll here and try to make your meaningless purchase more important. If you really feel the need to make yourself feel better about your purchase then get some friends. This is getting rediculous seeing your comments everyday. The iphone is great tech and they have my attention at launch day for all their products, but I personally will never buy an iphone or ipad as i need what they can’t give. Do you see me or anyone else here in your beloved tech blogs? I mean I expect this from Engadget as it goes both ways, but coming here (an android only tech blog) and taking the time out of your day to talk trash does nothing for any of us including you.

          • Jesse

what does android give you that ios can’t? widgets?

          • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

It is called trolling, Thanks you for feeding me :) seriously though, relax, if you hate my idiotic responses just ignore them, its free.

            Welcome back JB. :)

          • Anonymous

Tiny screen, can’t run background tasks…sounds about right for a great feature phone. :)

          • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

Kellex just called the iPhone a “great…phone”

            sell out :)

          • Anonymous

            Busted. :(

          • Michael

haha! good one Jeff and valid point!

          • Rg

i hope that was a smart comment because the iphones battery is horrible i only get about 5 hours with hardley any use!

        • Glpd46

same here i wonder if there are some defective batteries out there

        • Joker

9 or 6 to 7 and you think that’s good holy mighty

          • Alvinm 77

Yes for a playin with my phone through out the day regular use. Works for me. Thats what matters

went to this from my og droid… insanely different.. don’t regret my purchase at all… 4g is just incredible as well

    • Anonymous

I got it too it is insanely fast and the battery life is not horrible at all and it is a nice touch that we get a free mobile hotspot until may

    • AWP85

Also coming from OG Droid. Not missing it at all except I do kinda miss vanilla.

    • Anonymous

Also coming from OG Droid, loving everything about this phone, except the placement of the charging port. How does HTC expect you to use the kick stand to watch videos and charge at the same time (in landscape of course) the way they have it designed.

      • wowow

you can stand the phone up in portiat mode with the kickstand and charger attached. I agree it was not a great placement for the kickstand but try talking on the phone with the charger on the other side if you are right handed and you will appreciate the placement. Lesser of two evils I would say.

        • HighOct4ne

          good point, wowow…

      • Ljones4193

They sell a cradle that allows is to charge while standing… pretty cool. About $20
