Unless you soft hack it (installing the OS you want to use on an SD card and booting from the card). Which is what most of the “hackers” do. And to the best of my knowledge (and I try to keep up on this) B&N has no intention of locking it down (for now).

Because the Xoom DOES have an SD slot, it feels like gouging even more, because they’re charging $100 for the extra 16GB that I could get in SD format for less than half at cost.

For the same reason that you are having to reply to so many posts on this thread: the majority of consumers aren’t willing to pay what they’re asking. I totally get that the company needs to price for profit and that Moto doesn’t have the advantage that Apple does in having its own distribution chain, producing its own processor, buying components in bulk (economies of scale), and subsidized pricing by way of an apps/music/video/books market. However, there’s also the fact that if the cost exceeds what the market will bear, the product is dead.

I could start hand-crafting automobiles in my garage tomorrow. In order for the product to be profitable/sustainable, I’d need to charge hundreds of thousands of dollars– a price that no one would be willing to pay. It wouldn’t matter that my car is comparable to others on specs.

Maybe its true that if Moto priced it any lower they’d lose money. But then they should be working with Google to subsidize the price, offer a rebate…SOMETHING to get the price down to what people are willing to pay. If you try to rationalize the pricing with logic (similar specs = similar price) then you’ve lost, because people buy with their hearts more than with their minds. There’s a psychology to pricing and selling. Apple has perfected it.

I am not saying that the wi-fi Xoom is overpriced. Rather, I am critical of Moto for not matching Apple’s agressive support for both wi-fi & WWAN models *AND* having a $499 entry-level SKU. Viewsonic has been selling a Gtablet w/ Tegra 2 and 16gb internal + microSD slot for <$400 since November.

All other things being equal, IMO, a $499 16gb wi-fi Xoom *with a fully enabled microSD slot would* be much more desirable by your averag geek than a $499 iPad 2. 32gb microSDHC cards are <$70 now and falling in price weekly.

Apple is gouging you because they’re selling out of their own stores. They get both the manufacturer cut and the retailers cut. (There’s also a wholesaler’s cut when you buy form a locally owned store, but I assume Staples, Best Buy, and Walmart buy straight from the manufacturer.) Most of the things you buy at Walmart are usually at least three times what it costs to manufacture. The manufacturer doubles their price to get their profit, then the retailer doubles what the manufacturer charges. $600 is an incredible price for something so advanced.

I’m sure at least 3/4ths of the people buying NookColors are buying it as an e-reader. If even a quarter of the purchasers intended to hack it into a full fledged tablet, B&N would have already released an update which would have locked it down and bricked the already hacked ones.

And where are you going to put that 16gb SD card in your crApple iPad? This is the price point that they have to shoot for in order to make a profit on the device. crApple is making up for the low price by taking a 30% cut on apps, and whatever it is that they make on music and books. Plus selling a $5 piece of plastic for $40, or a $10 piece of leather for $70.
