Staples Ad For WiFi-only XOOM Shows March 27th Release?

So as was mentioned previously, it was looking like Staples was going to be selling the wifi-only XOOM some time in early April, but from the flyer above it looks like it may be sooner on March 27th. Take that anyway you would like, we all know how much fun newspaper ads have been lately. We definitely got the pricing point confirmed again from this post though.  It’s always dates that give everyone the run around. Don’t you hate that?

So who here is getting wifi-only version? The price is much more user friendly, that’s for sure. Count me in!

I was at the verizon store the other day and checked out the xoom. i talked with the sales rep as he’s a good friend of mine and he said they hadn’t sold a single one the last two weeks. i wanted to compare how the xoom handled with the ipad and found that the xoom was buggy and unresponsive at times. i played with it for over an hour and even though it has great specs it didn’t impress me. i like android as i still have the original motorola droid but i just found it lacking. it has many things going for it that is dormant and waiting to be the be activated and upgraded. not word on when it’s going to happen. the screen wasn’t that bright and it’s not led. the sales rep said he had been playing with it since it came out and didn’t like it himself. i went to walmart and bought a 32gb black wifi ipad 2 that a friend was holding for me instead. been playing with it for 4 days now and i’m happy as a clam.

I’m curious if anyone has been able to read the fine print to the left under the price in the ad?
I can make out “Motorola Android Wi-Fi Tablet” but nothing under that. Just hoping it’s not some shady BS that will ruin the deal for me.

  • It is now a matter of first come first served. Apple has started all and offers a finished OS with many apps. It is also a matter of experience. Honeycomb still looks like unfinished. Pro users would buy Honeycomb but regular customers prefer iPad 2. I would buy two of them 🙂

  • Yes_Mr_President

Are any other prospective United Kingom Xoom purchasers wondering why PC World are charging £499 ($803) for the WiFi only Xoom?? If the US $600 Staples WiFi Xoom rumor is true (= £372), why on earth are we getting charged an extra £126 ($203) over here in the UK for the same product?!

  • Jer85008

They are nuts for making the entry level unit $100 more than iPad2, especially when iPad fever is so high. Nobody cares that it has 32GB vs 16GB of memory or more “upside potential”. Motorola seems to be setting itself up to fail, and with the flood of other all-too-similar competitors on the way from Samsung, LG, etc. it will be a tough market for them. So far sales have been pretty poor, and it looks to continue.

  • sir_zman

Don’t care how much the iPad is, this is way too expensive. I just got my wife a laptop for $399…a friggin laptop with a 17″ screen, 3 GB Ram, etc…I get it that smallness comes with a price, but $600 is just too much…

  • Anonymous

It’s like they aren’t even trying. Sad, really. They come out with this after the iPad2, and the price is more than the cheapest wifi iPad2.

  • Anonymous

    27th sunday!?

  • CIFchamp24

I donno….. Looks like if android is gonna catch up with apple in the tablet department, it’s gonna have to be the xoom 2.

  • I think it`s too late for Motorola. Apple had lines around the block for the iPad 2 and most of those people have no interest in the Xoom

    • Anonymous

I couldn’t agree more. Android tablets will not catch on.

  • Frank

Yes I’m getting one for sure. I think the price point is ok I have been waiting for the wifi only version.

  • Google might prove me wrong but I see very little chance of android tablets catching on. Android is a phone phenomenon.

  • Joel

I will be getting one from SAMs club as we don’t have a Staples here.

  • It’s so funny to see Tim-o-tato as the author over at TechMeme.

Xoom sales has lagged (surprise), according to zdnet(http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/motorola-xoom-sales-tepid-production-cuts-next/45978). I just can’t believe the Moto still doesn’t listen and price something (16GB wifi) at $500. That’s what they need to do to save the brand.

Why do people compare the price point of the 16GB [email protected] to the XOOM which is 32GB and complain it’s $100 more? There IS a 32GB [email protected] that is $729. Why not compare devices that have at least some similarities? You know, at least give the [email protected] a fighting chance in the specs department. Lol

  • FortitudineVincimus

staples always has coupons as well.. they only ever really limit them being used on “computers” – which this does not really count as. the price is simply still to high. I might get one for my chick to replace her dying laptop since her usage is really more tablet typical anymore if the price is right.

  • Can’t wait to see how big the lines are for this!!!!! to prove those apple fanboys wrong….

  • I feel after playing with a xoom at verizon store the xoom is worth the $100 over the 16gb ipad wifi. My wife has an ipad and its beautiful except for I just dont like the way IOS works at all (she loves it) and LOVE my cruz reader and droid x. One guy at our staples said keep an eye out a crapload of android tablets were coming soon.

    • Anonymous

You said it, a CRAPload of Android tablets. Just reiterating on what you yourself said 🙂

  • Either the folks at the Staples near my house are clueless (ENTIRELY possible) or playing dumb (also…ENTIRELY possible). They had no tablets at all (just wanted to see if they might have the Toshiba or Acer – but don’t think those are actually out yet) when I stopped in today but, I asked them if they might have a waiting list for the wi-fi XOOM and had no idea what I was talking about. Though they did try to push me on some HP tablet they were supposed to have gotten next month but, have been told by the rep it won’t come out until June.

I’m still thinking of waiting for the LG OptimusPad, and the bigger Galaxy Tab. I like the reviews on the samsung chip set so far. I’m no hurry which helps.

  • adam25

Went to bestbuy to play with the xoom. Installed “leaked” flash, went to a few sites, some were kinda choppy and gave the “video not optimized for mobile”. Didn’t have time to install dolphin, but hoping that when setting the user agent to desktop mode, it plays better since website will see it as desktop.

Side note, BB employee confirmed wifi version in 2 weeks

    • did the Best Buy folks know a price for the wifi version?

      • adam25

i didn’t ask. I’m sure if its cheaper anywhere else they will price match so I’m not worried

        • copy, I have been meaning to swing by a BB to play with one since I saw a coworker with one last week.

    • Anonymous

how do you set it to see as a desktop?

      • Anonymous

go to dolphin, go to toolbox. go to user agent, hit desktop 🙂

  • kef

Of course I’m going WiFi only… my phone acts as a wifi hotspot, so I can just connect the XOOM to that. Hopefully, I’ll be changing phones more often than tablets, so the 4G upgrade won’t require me to send it in. No Brainer!

  • So does this mean that the WiFi only model will only come with a silver back?

  • adam25

    i’m all in….

  • Anonymous

Definitely thinking about pushing the button. With Wi-Fi tethering, can’t see paying the extra $200 plus monthly data charges for the cellular model. Might feel different if there was any hope of getting 4G in this area before 2013, but don’t see that happening.

lol. exactly. maybe the returns line.

        • The Om3ga Man

No because that line will be filled with too many ipad returns!

          • Anonymous

iPad surveys recently got a 95% satisfaction rate. That line will be pretty short, but then why argue on real numbers when you can just complain.

        • Joel

I picked up an iPad 2 (was first in line as well) and promptly returned in as the camera was horrible. Later I tried the xoom and loved it. Plus it has a gps. This will make naviagting alot easier than from my phone. I can’t wait for this to come out.

      • The Om3ga Man

Yes, in Line! Problem with that?

  • clvbrowns453

Can someone elaborate on this SD card slot situation? I must have missed something, sorry to be a pest.

  • Shopbuy11

It will not come close to compete with ipad2 with this price. It needs to be $499, or at least the $539 as rumored at Sams Club. I know xoom has more power and specs, but who cares since it’s practically still in “beta” and has so few apps?

    • BigDaddyEllison

“So few apps”? Most of the apps in the Marketplace work on the Xoom. I have only found 2 apps out of the 50+ I have tried that don’t and both of those were apps that were written for iPhone and then brought to Android. There are literally tens of thousands of apps that work on the Xoom.

      • Shopbuy11

Yeah, but how do those apps perform on a tablet when they weren’t built for it? I am referring to the form factor, screen, font, etc.? I am trying to decide which tablet to buy, so I would appreciate your review on this.

        • Anonymous

They work and look fine on mine. There weren’t a billion apps for the ipad when it launched. It will take time.

          • Anonymous

We keep hearing that about Android. Give it time, wait until the next release. It seems that Android is always a release or a device or a year away from something, but that horizon never seems to come. I’m not saying there hasn’t been progress, but it’s never the nirvana that advocates predict. And yet, Apple keeps shipping things people want. Funny.

          • Anonymous

And did apple just pop up with all these apps and devices no. It took them
time to build up to that too. Android is still young compared to others. And
it has held up against apple very well when others haven’t. I’m sorry you
think things just happen over night. Plus android has hit many of the
horizons that were set. Better multi tasking, a broader set of devices that
range from simple low end for everyday users to power house for heavy users.
And the many more manufacturers that build android devices still ship things
            people want. Funny.

          • Anonymous

I like apple products. I have a few. I’m even going to get one for my 65 year old technophobe father. Because they are so easy to use.

          • Anonymous

You forgot to point out that Android has already eclipsed Apple in smartphone sales. Must be doing something right. 🙂

      • Anonymous

Alot of Android phone apps downloaded off of the market could not be stretched out to fit the screen on the Xoom. If the app was not intentionally made to automatically stretch, then you’re basically stuck playing with a small screen on a huge screen.

        Lmao….

    • how so oh beacon of hate?

    • Bob

The iPad 2 sucks for $500+. It is a really cool device for about 200 bucks.
It has too many limitations for the price you have to pay for it.
No flash is a HUGE minus in my book, no usb, no SD, You have to use piece of crap itunes to import everything. The Xoom you just plug it in and start transferring anything from different folders.
With the limitations of the iPad 2 it is just a very expensive oversized iPod touch.
I can see people getting sucked in last year buying the first iPad with no competing tablets.
But..anybody that buys an iPad 2 is sucker, an idiot.

    • there’s an app for mopping?

800 for the 3g was way to much motorola

If the 32gb wifi only ipad is $600 why should the 32gb wifi only xoom be less?

Because the XOOM is ten times better than any ipad. If you want the best you pay for it. A mercedes cost more than a honda for a reason.

        • Anonymous

Because Apple is notorious for jacking up their prices to screw the consumer.

        • Anonymous

Because the majority of tablet buyers this year will buy an iPad2 just because it is an Apple product. They need the WiFis and GBs. If they want people to buy a Xoom instead it has to be based on something tangible to the average consumer which is not specs. It is price and user experience. The first is much easier to address with a cheaper (even by $30) than the second since IMO Android’s real power and what makes it the best mobile os comes from customization and tweaking to have a device that suits the user. That’s a lot harder quality to sell to someone who’s never used Android.

I’m with you. Maybe $700 since it will be LTE but still at or under $500 for the wifi.

    • Anonymous

      agree

    • If they want to compete with the ipad they will have to come down on the price which I suspect they will. otherwise I’ll wait for the Samsung 10.1 or the Toshiba Antares.

  • Wait a minute! This is Tato’s first post in almost 2 months!

All I read was “March 27th release” and immediately thought “Ah, hell…”, but realized it was for the XOOM and not that other thingamajig. 😛

  • Even though I’m buying this as soon as its released, it still hurts my brain a little bit to see a laptop with 4GB of RAM and a 640 GB hard drive for $20 cheaper right underneath it.

    • LionStone

Yea, that’s true but the reasoning I have for making it worth the price for me is the portability for when I’m travelling…I have laptops on both sides of the country and currently use a netbook for mobile, but the tablet is gonna be great to travel with, while shedding some bulk and weight! Still not sure if the G-Slate or Playbook will sway me from the Xoom though, so I’m waiting to compare and do hands on with these two other tablets to see which one I like the best.

Now u can have a bigger hard drive android is the best

      • Anonymous

you really should check out the nook color, its definitely worth rooting. CM7 is on now, as well as froyo. maybe a bit limited as far as features, but battery life is awesome and the screen can be seen in daylight.

One thing you have to look at though is while the XOOM is a top of it’s class product, the laptop will not be. So with the XOOM, you’re getting an excellent touch experience, great screen, good build, and lots of software optimized for it, the laptop will be crap plastic, bad screen, low end touch pad, and probably an uncomfortable keyboard, and it may be able to do less than the XOOM (I wouldn’t be surprised if it couldn’t play games/1080p video as well as the XOOM for instance).

Still, I know what you mean.

I already got a “WiFi only” version for $599. Kind of. Thank you, Chad OchoCinco! 🙂

I’m glad it won’t be mid April so everyone can get in on the fun sooner. I wish it was coming out tomorrow!

    • Mike

I took my Xoom back to Best Buy yesterday, when I seen that the Wifi was comming so soon

    • Vinnie

      Second that, thanks Chad!

    • ditto, bro.

  • Both my brother and myself (proud OG Droid owners) are planning on getting the wi-fi only model.

  • Anonymous

Nice price, but I am more excited that Tato is writing stories again. 🙂

    • Anonymous

Tato is the man lol, glad to see him raising above the ashes lol

  • Anonymous

    So wait… $200 for 4G+3G radios?

    • Anonymous

You shouldn’t call yourself “dmbass,” you’re quite good with math. You only missed by a penny. 😛

    • palomosan

The price is right, the 3G-4G cost about that.

      • Anonymous

I think the actual cost of the radio is ~$20 per unit.

    • Anonymous

As opposed to $130 for 3g only. You know carriers are going to try to stick it to you. Especially carriers that are already in bed with Apple.

  • Anonymous

i’m getting one for sure. If staples releases it first i’m there.

  • WhiteyOfVB

    Im getting one

  • Nikos

I notice this is the silver color they put on the ad. Hopefully the WiFi only model will also be available in black as well because I do not like the silver back-cover at all 🙁

  • Mr. Joe

Talk about stiff competition! That’s when the 3DS is launching in America!

Contrary to what my brother in law thinks. Calling me a lier and saying it launched here last week. DUMBO that was the Japanese launch not American. Get your shit straight.

  • Gatsby8870

    I am getting one.

  • Riverjao

Not me, I already have one 🙂 But, to all who are waiting on the wi-fi one, cheers! You definitely wont have any buyers remorse.

  • Stebog

Hopefully Sams Club is close to the same date.

    • Is Sams offering it at a lower price than Staples?

    • hkklife

Hopefully so. But remember, that Sam’s Club price isn’t confirmed. I am honestly thinking it was just a placeholder and it will be $589 or $599 there as wel. I honestly don’t see Sam’s selling a new, (relatively) hot item for a full $60 less than other retailers. I mean, even the GTablet which is a less desirable, lower-end “competitor”, was only selling from $379 on the low-end to $399 at the high end until very recently.

I will probably hold off on a wi-fi Xoom until the microSD slot mess is sorted out and/or until we see what Acer, Toshiba etc are bringing to market. Of course, if I can pounce on a deal to get a Xoom for $500-550 shipped or OTD I still might bite.

      • Anonymous

Presently, the 7″ Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Xoom are sold only through carriers. The carriers determine the price and retailers (or wholesalers like CostCo and SamsClub) can only adjust the price so much. But the wifi only versions are coming straight from the manufacturers with a suggested retail price. If SamsClub thinks they can still make enough money with a $60 price cut, they will sell it that cheap. I’m surprised that Staples is claiming the MSRP is higher and selling it at we know to be the real MSRP.

Man Disqus is kind of crappy on this site. I can’t see what I’m typing when I’m this far down.
