Stupid Zombies Brings the Killin’ Angry Birds-style

by: | posted 02.23.11 | Apps, Games, News

Our buddy Andrew over at Androinica introduced us to this game yesterday called Stupid Zombies and we haven’t been able to put it down.  The idea is similar in a way to Angry Birds, but it involves guns, zombies, blood and even more “strategery”, which is exactly why we love it.  Your goal is to kill off all zombies on each level with as few shots as possible, but you have to utilize angles and bounces, so the game becomes much harder than say, just pulling back on a slingshot and letting a bird fly.  You are awarded up to 3 stars for each level, can unlock new ones, and will probably spend countless hours of today trying to beat it as there are 60 to get through in stage 1 alone.

It’s also free.

Review: PressReader for Android

by: | posted 02.23.11 | Apps, News, Reviews

Though the business of journalism is in flux right now, people are taking chances in order to fix it. Whether it’s trying new methods of content delivery, or new methods of payment, the important thing is that people are trying.

PressReader is one of those attempts. Essentially, when you pay a subscription to their service, you are free to download newspapers from over 79 countries around the world. These newspapers are updated daily, which means you’ll always be up to date; you can download them on a per-issue basis or set up a subscription, so issues are downloaded daily.

Tip: Switch the Honeycomb Emulator from Tablet to Phone Mode

by: | posted 02.23.11 | News, Tips

I just want to start this off by reminding everyone that Honeycomb is never coming to your smartphone, at least not officially.  Even after you read this post and play with a half-baked version that looks like it was made for a phone, know that Google has already told us that we’ll be seeing the real thing in Ice Cream (Sandwich?) and that’s it.  This is really just for the geek in all of us that wants to waste a good 15 or 20 minutes.

So yeah…all you have to do is download the new Honeycomb SDK, set up an emulator with a resolution of 400×600 and watch Honeycomb switch over into phone mode.  And really, it just ends up looking like Gingerbread, but you will still see the Honeycomb-blue highlights around menus, HC icons, and even those beautiful 3D screen transitions.  Have fun!

Screenies after the break.

A set of 9 beautiful wallpapers were pulled out of the new Honeycomb SDK last night for everyone to enjoy on their small-screened devices.  All are hi-res and at a resolution that should fit on most phones from what we can tell.  Can’t think of a better way to start a Wednesday than by giving you a little taste of your XOOM before you pick it up tomorrow morning.

With news breaking this afternoon that the Motorola XOOM’s bootloader will be unlockable, we seem to be seeing a change in attitude towards the device on Twitter and through comments.  Does this news mean that more of you are inclined to pick up the device this Thursday?  Remember, it will still cost you $799 without a contract or $599 with one, but now you’ll essentially have complete control over it.
