How to: Root the Motorola XOOM

Time to root that brand new Motorola XOOM of yours (Thanks @Koush!).  We aren’t going to dig into a bunch of background on what “rooting” means, but if you are new, just understand that this will void your warranty just like unlocking the bootloader will.  Only proceed if you are willing to accept that fact.

*NOTE – If you have the WiFi-only version of the XOOM, you have different instructions. [Here]

*BEFORE YOU ROOT, YOU’LL WANT TO UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER. [Instructions]

Instructions:

1.  One last reminder.  Unlock your bootloader first.  [Instructions]
2.  Download this file to your computer:  xoomroot.zip
3.  Extract the contents into your Android SDK Tools folder.
4.  Open a command prompt from within your Android SDK Tools folder.

*Make sure nothing is selected and hold SHIFT+Right click – select “Open command window here.”

5.  Type:  adb reboot bootloader
6.  Type:  fastboot flash boot rootboot.img
7.  Type:  fastboot reboot
8.  Wait for your device to reboot all the way.
9.  Type:  adb remount
10.  Type:  adb push su /system/bin
11.  Type:  adb shell ln –s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
12.  Type:  adb shell chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
13.  And now this next step you have a couple of options.

Option A:  Push Superuser.apk in adb.  Type:  adb push Superuser.apk /system/app

Option B:  Exit adb and download Superuser app from the market.

14. Enjoy being rooted!

All credit to @Koush for this magic.  Hat tip to @PeterAlfonso for some 1-on-1 help.

The purpose of a god damn comment section is to comment about the purpose of this page. I don’t want to read all your guys bullshit and drama and arguments about the I pad, I want to read comments from people who used this rooting method. I don’t want to brick my xoom, but instead of getting users approval of this method I get a bunch of people commenting from their animal brain instead of their frontal lobe. You guys suck

Hey Guys i really need the file xoomroot.zip and the link is broken, can u help me with that

  • Scottholstein Sh

Do these directions work since the update to 3.1 came out? Or will a new set of rooting directions need to be put together?

  • http://profiles.google.com/foamyguy Tim Cocks

Be advised this is NOT FOR THE WIFI ONLY VERSION!!!!! if you use this method on the wifi only xoom you will soft brick your device. If you’ve already done it see this thread to fix it and get your root =)

  • irishsully85

Just wondering if anyone has attempted to use the z4root on the xoom

  • Darrell

Can’t redo this process after encrypting the system.

After encrypting and pushing the boot image the system won’t boot up.

  • Mrh4tch3t

hey i have tried this method a few times now and every time i go to put

    adb shell ln –s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su

in it says link failed no such file or directory. what am i doing wrong?

  • ColoradoTom

Little help please – when i try step 11, I get “link failed No such file or directory”. Any suggestions.

    • ColoradoTom

UPDATE – Thanks to Elysian893 on XDA’s site, I figured it out. The steps should be as follows –
      11. adb shell (everything from here is within the shell, up to the exit)
      12. ln –s /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su
      13. chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
      14. exit
      15. adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/

      • Mrh4tch3t

i tried that as well it didnt seem to work for me…but i guess i will have to try it again

  • Lwvyruz

whenever i try do to the commands while the device is on, such as adb reboot bootloader, it says it says device not found

    • ColoradoTom

make sure USB Debugging is turned on. (Setting – Application – Development)

  • Baldypal

So did it release with an “unlockable” bootloader or is that an upgrade later? Why so big that Koush already rooted if it was suppose to come “unlockable”?

    • kurttrail

You don’t know the difference between a unlocked boot loader and having root access.

    • Budcar38

Kurttail is being polite. What he is trying to say is that you are and idiot. Think before you post.

      • Baldypal

Thanks for being so nice! Educate me.

        • DBK

          lol, oh Baldypal :)

          • Baldypal

Hey buddy! You know i never told anyone i was a root/bootloader android whiz kid. I’m thinking its pretty sad that others have to be such a$$es sometimes. Not you DBK…you’re just a smart a$$ :) but you already know that.

          • Budcar38

I’m sorry. I read it quick and thought you were ripping on koush. There have been so many trolls here lately I’ve stopped reading most of the comments. Just search for “root” within this site. Kellex has put together some amazing step by step explanations and guides. Good luck rooting.

Is Android life dead, I am getting sick of hearing about the Xoom.

    • DroidzFX

Your not hearing it. You are choosing to read it when you click on the article’s headline. Where did you see rules posted about what is allowed to be posted where? Im tired of choosing to read people’s ignorant comments. You would be a fool to think this website could stay alive on just DROID news. Accept it. Move On.

      • http://twitter.com/tomabrad Tom

I would like to hear more about non VZW news, which is what Android life is. AKA not DROID news.

        • DroidzFX

I understand but you need to understand that people don’t want to check separate websites. Its obvious that android life was not as popular and has seen a lack of updates. Its not that easy to attract people to a new website. Droid-life is what people know. But constant criticism on what the DL crew wants to put on their blog is unnecessary. Droid-life is evolving past just strictly DROID news. There is not enough DROID news to keep this site going.

          • http://twitter.com/tomabrad Tom

I am sure that the creators of any website would like to receive both positive and negative remarks. What company/website would not want to listen to feedback that users have and improve accordingly? Well besides Apple…

          • DroidzFX

Yes they would but the first 10 post non droid related they got all the feedback that was needed.

          • http://twitter.com/tomabrad Tom

Your not a mod so STFU and stop telling me what to post.

          • DroidzFX

Your right Tom very observant. But its ironic that now your telling me what to post. So now we are in quite a dilemma.

            Thanks for acknowledging that fact

That you changed what you originally wrote. No Problem. By the way it does clearly state (Edited by author X minutes ago)

Look @ an.droid-life.com and read the latest article. Its way breaking news and extremely recent.

    • Petersen5

Im tired of people complaining. Droid-life and kellex csn post whatever they want. If you don’t like it do not waste your time commenting on it. The xoom is verizon. Go kellex keep up the good work.

      • http://twitter.com/tomabrad Tom

All I am trying to say is it would be nice is he didn’t launch a new website then just act like it doesn’t exist 2 months later because he can’t stop squirting over the Xoom and Thunderbolt.

        • DBK

Someone’s butthurt. Is he not squirting enough over you?

You’re talking about the sister site, right? an.droid-life.com

That might not have been clear to all who read your original post, and immediately assumed you were being a grumpy old troll… (who lives under a bridge…. )

      • http://twitter.com/tomabrad Tom

Correct, I am not trolling, I just thought that an.droid-life.com > droid-life.com, and would like to continue seeing posts made there.

It’ll be back shortly. I apologize for the lack of posts over there.

perhaps you should scrap an.droid_life.com and open up a site that will get millions of page views….iphone_life.com

          • Anonymous

This one already gets millions of pageviews.

@droid_life is absolutely the best. Period. End of story. This is why I will always be an avid reader of yours.

I’m still kicking myself for eating dinner with my family last night at JUST the wrong time… and therefore, missing the plume updates on my OG DROID… and therefore, missing the $200 OCNN deal. Man oh man… if only.

Now I think I’m going to have to pick it up at Costco. $789.99 with no contract. They make you activate it on a $20 plan for the first month only and waive the $20 activation. Ends up being $10 more than Verizon or Best Buy, but if something better comes out in 90 days, I can take it right back to Costco for a full refund. With the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, G-Slate, etc., looming and definitely coming within the next 90 days (gotta be, right?), I’m betting at least one of a few things will happen:
1.) Something that is comparable to the XOOM will be < $$
2.) XOOM will drop in price
3.) People who bought from VZ or BB will be pissed
4.) I will go back to costco with my xoom and thank them for the $10, 90-day XOOM rental

And if none of the above happens… oh well. The XOOM is awesome, and I'll have one. No matter how you slice it, Cotco + Xoom == happy ending

    • DBK

You forgot the $600 WiFi only Xoom. :P

      • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

Good call on the wifi-only XOOM!!! Wonder what the odds of that coming out in the next 90 days are?

        • DBK

Since they hinted at sometime around May, I’d say the chances are very, very good. :)

    • http://twitter.com/tomabrad Tom

lol I like that plan, you could just keep bouncing from product to product and returning them before the 90 days.

      • http://www.linkedin.com/in/PhilHamlin Phil Hamlin

        Exactly.

    • Zeavott

I did the same thing except missing out the coupon…. I ended up buying two and ill likely return within 90 days to costco.

    • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

If you really want a Xoom just wait till iPad 2 is released and there will be a major price drop. The Xoom has absolutely no buzz, apart from Android websites, and sales will be a disaster. I went it to Best Buy to pick up a case for my phone and the sales guy i talk to all the time said he thinks they sold 3 of them. The iPad 2 is going to be announced in a few days and sales will go from poor to non existent. So if you want one of those babies just hold off a couple months, your bank account will thank you. Unless of course your ballin’ then go get that bad boy now.

      • Anonymous

Actually, every store I’ve talked to has said the complete opposite and that they can’t keep them in stock they are selling so well.

    • Netlover

I did the same thing. Just grabbed one from Costco this afternoon and was told that I could call Verizon to cancel the data plan right away, which I did. No hussles.

I don’t own a Xoom (yet) but it seems sort of funny to me to root. I am by no means an expert, but I root my D2 to get a better ROM or for more features. Just seems funny to root your Xoom, which is already running honeycomb and is probably 2 generations ahead of most of our mobile phones running Froyo!! Just saying…

    • DBK

Agreed. It make more sense to root something like the NookColor and throw Honeycomb on it. To root the best to make it better when it’s already the best doesn’t make much sense. Oh well, I guess if you can you might as well.

      • Anonymous

Funny you said that i just got a Nook an am working on that now ..

        • DBK

You doing a hard root or a soft one? I also have a nook color and did the soft root. Less risky that way. The warranty could prove useful, you know. :)

          • Anonymous

i just got :) i think the soft root is the way i am going .. tackling it tonight

          • DBK
