ROM: Project Elite V5 Released for Original DROID, Brings Lots of Gingerbread

When Actngrezy and mojo_droid first told me about Project Elite back in December, they still seemed unsure on how the world of DROID gurus would take it.  Well, after seeing our State of the DROID ROM-o-sphere, I think it’s safe to say that they were happily accepted and according to our audience, are the top OG DROID ROM on the planet.

Last night they released Project Elite V5 which is their take on an AOSP Gingerbread ROM, meaning you should probably take a look at this right away if you are still rockin’ the original.

*FULL WIPE REQUIRED.

This ROM is so sick… runs smooth as butter.  Haven’t really felt the need to upgrade yet b/c of Actngrezy and Mojo, and the PE team’s work.. thanks so much.

  • Jfrer360

  • I have it on my OG and it is by far my favorite very fast and smooth, and looks very good from the get go

+10000 for DL and +10000000 for PE

  • Mike Baltierra

I liked this ROM for about 2 hrs…corporate mail stopped syncing after an hour….

loving this rom BUT i am having some issues with my wifi. it sees my network and all and tries and tries to obtain an ip address but just keeps disconnecting and then trying to connect again and again…any one have any suggestions??
    Thanks
    JeffG

    • OreoMan

Jeff, I had to disconnect my modem and re-connect it. My phone connects with no issues now. Hope that helps!

      • OreoMan

        By disconnect, I mean unplug.

        • Anonymous

i also had this problem, and i also solved it the same way you did…could also try resetting the router

  • bibbyboi

I wish i would have went with this much sooner…I loved simply stunning but this is much better….

  • does anyone know how to change the ringtone for incoming calls. i want to apply like the standard ringer to everyone on my contacts and non contacts that call instead of the hardcore rap song that is set as the default. *sidenote was is that song… kinda catchy
oh, nd this rom is phuking amazing.

  • So, I guess my phone doesn’t agree with Gingerbread. This is the 3rd GB ROM that runs good for about 5-6 hours, then locks up and won’t go past the boot screen. I made sure I followed PE’s instructions about using Titanium Backup correctly and not loading Froyo data on a GB ROM, but still had the same result.

Oh well, I’m back to PE4.2 and it rocks, so no biggie.

    • Shannon

Mine’s the same – it’ll run great for a few hours, and then start bootlooping for no apparent reason. As much as I want Want WANT Gingerbread on my OG, it looks like this isn’t it, either. *sigh*

  • 3V1L

Traded in cyanogen for this. Haven’t looked back. Love it!

      Go away.

  • Guys, I got rid of the redraws by reducing the VM heap size under elite options, try it and let me know!

  • keithsmnr

WOW, coming for the lateless Bugless, a lot of major improvements in battery life, phone temperature, speed of opening apps, menus, and dialogs, everything is so much faster. This is the BEST ROM I have EVER flashed!!

    • wow, I meant to type “coming from the latest bugless” sorry

    • wow, I meant to type “coming from the latest bugless” sorry

  • Bennotae

Why no PR on SS 5.0? Been running GB from Chevy since 2/11.

  • Shannon

Hey, question – with all three Gingerbreads that I’ve tried so far (Liquid, Pete’s build, and now this), I run into issues with widgets not updating properly – mainly SetCPU and Bonjour! Battery. Does anyone know a good way to fix this? Also, what’s the fix for keeping homescreens in memory again? I tried searching for it, but there are just too many posts, I’m not finding it. I know there was a manual edit involved…

    • I noticed redraws at first as well and after I had changed a few settings they stopped, first try decreasing the VM heap size a little under the elite options, and then look for a setting to keep homescreen locked in memory, this option should be in your actual launchers menu

  • LuvMyDroid

Figures this came out the very next day after I switched to PE v4.2 from UD 2.5. As soon as I spent a whole evening setting everything back up v5 drops. Just my luck. lol

  • Flyinion

    ignore, Disqus failed to “reply”.

  • JeffG

wow so far so good. coming from bbv6.2.1 and i have never had to look at ads as he had a way to shut them off. Is that a feature here as well?? I looked around but so far i have not found a way…thanks to all of you and DL for a great site!!
    JeffG

    • yes…I found it while going through the elite options menu…it’s in there somewhere.

Installed looks great batter than Liquid Gingerbread, but I have two issues. The “Home” button does not work. I tried changing settings in Launcher and restarting it but no luck. Also I cannot connect to Google Account to load the Google settings on my phone. Any suggestions?

    • Jacobius

I’m having the same problem with the Home button, too. Can’t figure out how to fix it…

  • ReUnpack

Under the Elite Settings “check for Update” says there is an update. Has anybody done the update?

  • OreoMan

Damn it! Anyone having issues with Swype? I can’t get it it to work.

    • ReUnpack

      My Swype is flawless

      • OreoMan

I’ll remove it and try it again. Thanks!

        • OreoMan

Found an old file and removed it. Swype works now!

          • Woundead1

I can’t find a good Swype file, can someone post a download link, it would be greatly appreciated!:)

    • ReUnpack

      My Swype is flawless

problem: my music is not showing up no matter what i do but it is on my sd card

  • droidowner

just booted it up on my droid.. i had my doubts, but its actually faster than the CyanogenMod nightlies…did not know that was possible lol

I just installed this after coming from the now retired Sapphire… Gotta say this is super-fast. Tons of options and customizations. Loving the new screen off TV animation. I kinda agree with what someone else here said that this may keep me from rushing out for the Thunderbolt if it ever comes out… Loving my OG again…

  • Can anybody explain me why they prefer PE over CM?

    • Tyrian

      I cannot.

I switched back after 10 hours. Microphone stopped working. Battery was horrible with default kernel.

    • Debrihmi

For me its a stability thing. Sometimes my camera acts up, the keyboard gets laggy and I’ve noticed some glitches with the phone app; these are deal breakers since I use my phone for business.

  • Debrihmi

    Loving it!
All PE’s stuff is solid, that’s why its my favorite ROM.
I do have launcher re-loads in Gingerbread, can’t stand it. I’ve tried System Persistent in ADW but nothing. Over launchers do the same. How can I fix this?

    • Anonymous

I have a lot of home screen re-draws with all the GB ROMs I’ve tried (UD, SS, Liquid). There is a way to use terminal emulater to help with redraws on froyo ROMs, but it didn’t seem to do anything with the GB ROMs.

    • Anonymous

There’s rumors flying around that GB’s memory requirements have gone up which affects performance on the Droid because it only has 256 MB of ram.

  • uhh it won’t connect to my wifi anymore? Anyone else having this problem? >>>>>>>>>>> Nevermind, im a an idiot

  • So far so good! I like it…but its only been 30 min. 🙂

  • too bad i was thrown into a boot loop sooo….. what do i do now i restored to the last PE update but i reallly want to use this rom i really want ginger bread please respond!!!!

  • Bryanrholcombe

just got it up and running but my music isnt in the player even tho its on my sd card.
    help?

  • oh YESS!! downloading now!!! hahahaaaaa!! i love project elite, best app

  • Mikee

alright downloaded it onto my phone what do i do next…step by step please?

  • Haneyg

PROBLEM: I did not like the default themed version of LauncherPro, they made a green outline on the widgets.

I want the original back, so I tried deleting the Themed version using the “Delete System App” option in the Elite Settings.

Now I cannot get to any homescreen, and downloading the original Launcherpro results in an “update failure”.

I really don’t want to toss aside this ROM because of a trivial error like this, but LauncherPro is the most important app for my phone besides Google Voice.

    • I agree with you there. I’m not diggin’ on the green outlined Calender widget (only LP one I use). I’m big on matching everything on my homescreen, and it’s killing my look.

    • sodroid

Did u try rebooting after Uninstall, then download from market?

    • Pmr5019

You need to have another launcher installed such as adw or something. I’ve never used the included delete system app thing…I use root explorer system/app (mount r/o) then long press on launcherpro.apk and delete it. Reboot, install the market version and you are good to go without the green borders. I keep a secondary launcher since PE uses LP as the default launcher and it will need updated from the market every once in a while and that can usually only happen while you are using the secondary launcher.

    • LuvMyDroid

Can’t you just restore your LP setup assuming you had backed it up in the LP settings? I’m still running PE 4.2, but that is what I did.

  • Mmchale13

I loved the previous Pe versions but could never get my navigation to work. The ROMs were fast and butter smooth but I need my nav to work. Has anyone had a nav problem or know a fix.

  • CHE

Just switched from CM 6.1.2 and I am impressed. This is a solid ROM.

  • Jgmagill68

everyone will still rock the OG droid if our GREAT developers continue to support it

  • Skytek65

Love it going to install it today

  • Mke236

PEGB5 is insanely awesome. Feels like stock Gingerbread but has all the stability and goodies that come with PE roms. The guys at Miui should take note. I’m telling you guys, this rom has just about everything you could ask for and more. FLASH NOW!

  • Great Rom, but I miss select all in the email client. : /

  • Theflyingswami

Sorry if this is a silly question (I’m new to flashing ROMs), but what, exactly, does “full wipe required” mean? Anytime I’ve flashed ROMs, I lose all my apps and whatnot. Is that all it means? Can I just use Titanium to restore after flash? Thanks.

    • Anonymous

Full wipe means you need to wipe data & cache and do a full format. Yes, you’ll lose everything. Yes, you can use titanium to restore your apps but you might have problems with some of them, it’s a bit hit or miss.

  • Mauricio Sanchez

Flashing… now! I’m a noob at this, I was running Pete’s GPA12 (my first series of ROMs were his GPA’s), but this looks epic.

  • i was able to install without a full wipe and haven’t had any problems yet fwiw.

  • Gotmurph84

+1 for some OG Droid coverage 🙂

  • jojo

    I scored a 1603 wit this

  • btreu1

Best ROM for OG Droid, HANDS DOWN! I’ve been running PE since December, and I haven’t looked back! Outstanding work, thanks Team PE! Reasons for switching to PE5… List is too long.

  • Tcal

    UD 3.0 FTW

  • EC8CH

What happened to their awesomely themed GB keyboard from v4.2? Back to boring stock in v5. Anyone know how to get themed keyboard back?

    • EC8CH

      nevermind… found it:

      menu
      settings
      elite settings
      applications
      install modified apps
      alternative keyboard

      … awesomeness restored 🙂

  • Rickmue

Currently running PE4.2. Been running it for a week. ROCK solid rom. I’ve used many roms and this is in my top 2 or 3 favorite… very solid ROM. Looking forward to loading up PE5.

    Liquid Gingerbread v1.3

  • Miguelts9

im loving liquid gingerbread, any reasons i should change to PE V5???

    • jojo

Way more features and better performance

      • ereptek

I tried installing PE V5. The install failed – assert write failed: write_raw_image . . . I suspect it has to do with the need to install a custom kermal. While I am rooted, I did not have to install Liquid Gingerbread with any custom kernals. LG 1.3 installs perfectly. I’ll be sticking with LG.

    • RC

in my opinion it is more stable than Liquid GB.

  • Apsmojo

Im newly rooted and running the PE v4.2 beast and love it. Tried rooting my friends OG with no luck. Tried multiple ways and nothing. I could get to sprecovery but when I went to install the update zip it came up with the error code. Any ideas?

    • Muddy B00ts

Did you name it update.zip? A lot of the time windows will add a .zip to whatever you name it so the phone reads it as update.zip.zip. Try just calling it update. That did it for me all those months ago.

      • Apsmojo

Yep, I renamed it update.zip. I wonder if I flash it to 2.2 then try sprecovery, then the update.zip if it would fake?

        • Anonymous

Same thing happened to me…just name it “update” and you should be all set

  • Anyone run this with a P3 kernel? I’m running V4 with it with no issue… just wanted to make sure they play well since P3’s kernels are the only ones my phone has ever liked.

  • Dan

I’ve been running PE for quite a while now.

After a quick scan of the release thread, I downloaded and installed v5 last night. Haven’t plugged it in since then, and I’m still rocking it/making sure battery is calibrated.

It flies. I have no complaints as of this moment (15 hours so far – including installs and updates plus extra screen time to get everything configured and fight with LPP).

  • Jon

awesome battery life! beats out CM7 nightlies!

  • Jon

  • Haneyg

What are some good kernels to go with this ROM? I am currently using Bugless Beast with the 1.2Ghz Slayher kernal.

I would like to keep that level of speed and performance, but am unsure what kernals are compatible with Project Elite.

    • Haneyg

Answered my own question: There are Project Elite specific kernels available at their site linked in the article.

      • There are also different kernel options within the PE settings itself: Elite Settings->Performance->Change Kernels. PE is automated to download/flash kernel/reboot on its own after you make your selection. Very efficient/user friendly… I’m huge fan of this new ROM.

  • Fd2blk78

Have downloaded Petes GBA12, with slayher 1 ghz kernel, and phone is running great. Any reason to switch to this?? Gimme a heads up friends! Thanks for the feedback.

    • Vselca

I used Petes and then i tried Ultimate Droid (UD3.0.1) and its phenominal…Fast, stable, flawless…

  • dannyjedi

Imagine if gingerbread was actually released on phone like for real!!!! That would be AMAZING!

    • EC8CH

it was on the nexus 1

  • Can anyone compare this to Simply stunning 5.0? I just flashed it a week ago and i was wondering which one runs better?

  • Anonymous

Damn it, I just got used to Liquid Gingerbread!

No way I’m passing up a PE ROM. Those guys are the freakin’ shiznoots.

One of the many things I dig about DL is that you post exciting, relevant stuff that I wouldn’t have uncovered myself. Well done.

      Like 10x faster literally ….

  • CB

PE is by far my favorite Rom. And I’ve tried all of them..multiple multiple multiple times 🙂

  • Anonymous

One of THE best rom/developer teams out. This ROM is awesome, try it out and be amazed.

  • Evol7892002

    Best rom EVER!!!!

  • Installing it on my phone as we speak…

  • Guys even their Betas rock and are mostly rock solid. But when they release something, you know it will be spot on. Devs are quick to help if you need it, but rarely do you need it. My Verizon contract is up, but with this new version, I can’t see any reason to leave PE and my OG Droid.

  • Anonymous

I’ve been playing around with a couple of GB ROMS lately, and the UD 3.0. ROM was super fast fast just at 800ghz. Of course I went with the Slayher 1.2ghz. I will try the new PE, looks awsome

  • Anonymous

I absolutely love UD ROMs and I’ll be the first to tell you how wonderful UD 3.0.1 (Gingerbread) is. This Project Elite ROM takes it to another level. To call this ROM amazing would be an incredible understatement. Wow.

  • Cmendezd

I highly recommend this To anyone that hasn’t tried out project elite, their roms are superb! These guys have fast feedback, great community and alot of themes! I’ve test alot of roms and in the end I always come back to PE!
    (Srry for my grammer)

  • MJ

This ROM is real nice. Not as many sprinkles as CM or UD, but everything works, which I can’t say for CM quite yet. I wish it did have the T-Mobile theme app.

  • I guess I’ll be trying this tonight on my Droid cuz who knows when the Thunderbolt will actually come out.
For being a superfast phone, the Thunderbolt sure is slow to come out!

    • Lane

After trying PE you might not care when the thunderbolt comes out. I’m happy with the OG droid rocking PE until something like the atrix comes to verizon

      • My housemate got an Atrix and it is a baller phone. I don’t think I can wait til June for the Bionic. Especially because its a somewhat striped down Atrix.

        • Anonymous

How’s that? If your talking about the 1gb ram, the phone itself is only using 512mb the rest is reserved for the laptop dock. Other than that they are the same phone.

          • Is that true!? The phone can’t use the full gig when undocked? Cuz that would suck. I’ll have to check on my friend’s Atrix. Even if so, surely rooting could change that.

  • *gasps*

  • BobaFett

    It’s amazing
