In the March edition of Details, they recommended a bunch of phones that don’t begin with an “I” and we couldn’t help but smile at all of the Android options. Of course, we loved seeing the Thunderbolt, but also took notice that they left out Skype and 8-device hotspot features which we know have been fueling the delay controversy lately. Oh, and another 2-page ad showed up directly after. Just wanted to share…

All of these phones are the best of the best currently, and I have no problems with either. They are each as capable as a phone can be, more so in fact as they are both full-blown handheld computers. The Atrix has special docks available to turn the phone into a laptop and a multimedia nettop computer, at extra cost. I have no qualms recommending either of these phones to those in the market for a good Android smartphone.

Just called VZW in boston and got a very enthusiastic “Monday” as a release for the TBolt. Figured I’d mention it although obviously it’s entirely possible he has as much info as any of us

  the more i think about it, the better i think android is compared to iOS… and i was thinking about doing the same thing (waiting until this summer and getting whatever the next iPhone will be). the only thing i like better about iOS is how fluid/smooth/polished it seems. the hardware is awesome too. i’d take a thunderbolt over iPhone 4 any day at this point (literally, ANY DAY! come on verizon…)

Are you noticing a big lag on your phone lately? I myself, along with all the droid owners I know is saying the same thing.

I’m wondering if its just the original Droid, or any other Android model owners are experiencing the same thing… Good thing iPhone 5 is coming up soon!

  I’ve heard of this happening to some who got the stock froyo update. Just root it, rom it (gingerbread of course) and overclock it a bit. Even up to 800Mhz makes a world of difference. My phone is running like it’s brand new and I would never consider the iPhone. Go for the Thunderbolt, you’ll be glad you did.

just got my atrix and laptop dock. don’t believe the knocks against this thing. it is a thingof beauty, beautifully executed. 4g is a bit slow, but not terrible, and with wifi activated uploading and downloading are excellent. everythign is crisp, and clean, and nicely put together. the laptop dock has beautiful build quality, and works speedily enough. and if you don’t like the touchbad, slap a wireless logitech mouse on it and you’re in business. i’m thrilled so far with this phone and with its potential. i envision using the laptop dock as a handy way to check email, catch up on some writing and maybe show off some pix. especially impressive is how easy it is to link to google docs, or to use quickoffice or other word processing programs, and then expand to full screen. the view then is just peachy.

in other words, and in short….atrix rocks!

  That’s how I feel about my HTC Inspire 4G If I had gotten an Atrix though, 500 bucks for a Laptop Dock is OUTRAGEOUS.

I just called my local best buy and asked about the thunderbolt and the lady said that Verizon pushed back the release date so they don’t know when it will be released. I then asked her what the original release date was and she said the 24th, but not anymore.

I just wish they would announce the Thunderbolt already! I did call VZW today and they confirmed that it will be either the 24th or the 28th.Thats what the employees where told and that it was being released by the end of this month.At a local VZW store they where training today for the Thunderbolt and they confirmed the 24th or 28th….I did call Best Buy and there telling me the 24th!….Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.Once again.Ugh!

    The differences (battery, FFC, internal storage) are minor except that the Thunderbolt supposedly comes with a 32 GB SD card.

      Not the same processor. The Inspire uses the 8255 and the thunderbolt uses 8655 which is the faster new generation. and the thunderbolt does come with the 32GB card preloaded.

        Same CPU. The 8655 just adds CDMA support. The ARM CPU core is exactly the same.

        I guess u may think the difference(s) in the two to be minor but I think u guys may be overlooking one fairly substantial difference…the network! Not to mention the better coverage from Verizon, the 4g networks from AT&T’s HSPA+ and Verizon’s LTE are not even comparable. AT&T’s HSPA+ customers promised 4G are only seeing 1-3mbps down & 200-500kbps up, whereas Verizon’s LTE customers are seeing 7-15 mbps down (in my area, ATL, I’ve seen as as high as 26) and 3-6 mbps up (I’ve seen 8)! Granted these speeds may drop slightly when the network gets taxed but common sense can tell u its no comparison.

      The Thunderbolt sports 4g LTE, not rebadged 3g HSPA+ The Inspire is lucky to hit 4mbps with perfect coverage. At CES the Thunderbolt was hitting 15mbps down and people are reporting as high as 26mbps burst speeds for it with 8mbps uploads.
      
      I ditched AT&T for Verizon and couldn’t be happier. Went from spotty coverage to perfect coverage. Haven’t dropped a single call with my Incredible.
      
      The Thunderbolt also has no 3rd party application block, has a kickstand and is bundled with a 32gb microsd card. Oh, and skype video chat.
      
      So yeah, there are differences.

The Nexus S would be my choice out of all of them, since the Atrix is locked, the Thunderbolt isn’t stock, the Venus is WP7, but the NS is stock Gingerbread. No matter, they all blow the iPhone away.

So I have read a few threads about this phones release date.. My question, has VZW changed their announcement from CES stating Q1 2011? And I am not talking about their twitter or FB page, I dont think people should be upset with VZW at all since we are still in Q1, just relax it will come then you will forget about this whole mess, I just really find it hilarious that people are getting pissed because they read somewhere that someone said something that heard something that it could be the 24th. Just my thoughts

Kellex…you are a trooper, and we are thankful for all the reporting that you are doing re: Thunderbolt, but really…at this point in time there should only be TBolt posts relating to one of the following:

1 – Release Date
2 – Release Date being pushed back

Seriously, people are no longer rational regarding this phone, myself included. The above are the only news items on the TBolt that matter at this point. The rest just serves to p!ss people off. And that’s not a knock on you, that’s a knock on HTC and/or Big Red for the utterly effed up way they have handled this phone’s release to the public.

  You can call it much better if you want and have it! I have had an og Droid & my sister has an x, I loved my of Droid with vanilla and want no part of the horrible blurification! So ill leave u with blur, the locked bootloader (most likely) and the 512 gbs of ram…ill take the 768gbs, beautiful sense & the almost as fast 2nd Gen snapdragon

      Droid-Life is fine, but merging the two sites would be ideal I feel. I do care about the other non-VZW Android devices as well. Also, down the line when every carrier is using LTE and phones are easily swapped between networks via SIM card switching, there probably won’t be carrier-branded Android devices anymore. We might see this as soon as the dual-CDMA+GSM iPhone 5 this summer and soon after the LTE Android phones that work on both VZW and AT&T.

I just watched a video on youtube of an unboxing of the atrix….. and on the back of the phone it hhas a fingerprint reader that you can use to lock and unlock your phone……. that is freaking awesome. i hope the droid bionic has this also
