Details Mag Recommends HTC Thunderbolt, Atrix 4G and Nexus S

In the March edition of Details, they recommended a bunch of phones that don’t begin with an “I” and we couldn’t help but smile at all of the Android options.  Of course, we loved seeing the Thunderbolt, but also took notice that they left out Skype and 8-device hotspot features which we know have been fueling the delay controversy lately.  Oh, and another 2-page ad showed up directly after.  Just wanted to share…

All of these phones are the best of the best currently, and I have no problems with either. They are each as capable as a phone can be, more so in fact as they are both full-blown handheld computers. The Atrix has special docks available to turn the phone into a laptop and a multimedia nettop computer, at extra cost. I have no qualms recommending either of these phones to those in the market for a good Android smartphone.

Got a call from BB today… what a cock tease. They called to tell me that the TBOLT was “probably” not going to be in tomorrow and that they don’t have a date, but it would be soon. FAIL.

Just called VZW in boston and got a very enthusiastic “Monday” as a release for the TBolt. Figured I’d mention it although obviously it’s entirely possible he has as much info as any of us :)

thanks, but i’m going with the iPhone 5 when it comes out in June/July. iOS is far better than gingeror honeycomb.

    • Anonymous

What are you getting out of this? You don’t even have a substantive point. If you want to debate , go right on ahead; but all you do is troll. I know I shouldn’t be replying to you, but I’m just mystified as to why you would even bother. What’s the incentive?

I hope you’re a paid shill because, if not, your life is a sad and depressing affair.

    • Guest

the more i think about it, the better i think android is compared to iOS… and i was thinking about doing the same thing (waiting until this summer and getting whatever the next iPhone will be). the only thing i like better about iOS is how fluid/smooth/polished it seems. the hardware is awesome too. i’d take a thunderbolt over iPhone 4 any day at this point (literally, ANY DAY! come on verizon…)

  • Qamar

well the Inspire begins with an “I”, so….

    • Anonymous

      Yeah, but it’s uppercase.

  • Michael

    Attn: original Droid owners,

Are you noticing a big lag on your phone lately? I myself, along with all the droid owners I know is saying the same thing.

I’m wondering if its just the original Droid, or any other Android model owners are experiencing the same thing… Good thing iPhone 5 is coming up soon!

    • Muddy B00ts

I’ve heard of this happening to some who got the stock froyo update. Just root it, rom it (gingerbread of course) and overclock it a bit. Even up to 800Mhz makes a world of difference. My phone is running like it’s brand new and I would never consider the iPhone. Go for the Thunderbolt, you’ll be glad you did.

      • Anonymous

        He’s just a troll. Don’t feed him.

just got my atrix and laptop dock. don’t believe the knocks against this thing. it is a thingof beauty, beautifully executed. 4g is a bit slow, but not terrible, and with wifi activated uploading and downloading are excellent. everythign is crisp, and clean, and nicely put together. the laptop dock has beautiful build quality, and works speedily enough. and if you don’t like the touchbad, slap a wireless logitech mouse on it and you’re in business. i’m thrilled so far with this phone and with its potential. i envision using the laptop dock as a handy way to check email, catch up on some writing and maybe show off some pix. especially impressive is how easy it is to link to google docs, or to use quickoffice or other word processing programs, and then expand to full screen. the view then is just peachy.

in other words, and in short….atrix rocks!

    • MikeC

That’s how I feel about my HTC Inspire 4G :) If I had gotten an Atrix though, 500 bucks for a Laptop Dock is OUTRAGEOUS.

  • lolthunderbolt

I just called my local best buy and asked about the thunderbolt and the lady said that Verizon pushed back the release date so they don’t know when it will be released. I then asked her what the original release date was and she said the 24th, but not anymore.

  • Liglesias2

Lets all try to get along. all i want is to get this phone(thunderbolt)

  • Rachel

I just wish they would announce the Thunderbolt already! I did call VZW today and they confirmed that it will be either the 24th or the 28th.Thats what the employees where told and that it was being released by the end of this month. At a local VZW store they where training today for the Thunderbolt and they confirmed the 24th or 28th….I did call Best Buy and there telling me the 24th!….Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.Once again.Ugh!

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

they’ve been doing thunderbolt training for a while though. my friend did it like 2 or 3 weeks ago

      • Rachel

        yeah i know,lol…but them confirming helps…..i think,lol

  • Jjaverson

Wow never read comments on here until this one. Tcal is a tool.

  • tim

Why no Inspire? It’s pretty much the same as the Thunderbolt.

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

not the same. just in looks. it’s nowhere near the TBolt

      • HTC FTW

Same RAM, CPU, GPU, OS, Sense, surround sound, screen, both “4G”.

The differences (battery, FFC, internal storage) are minor except that the Thunderbolt supposedly comes with a 32 GB SD card.

        • Viper76269

Not the same processor. The Inspire uses the 8255 and the thunderbolt uses 8655 which is the faster new generation. and the thunderbolt does come with the 32GB card preloaded.

          • Mike

Same CPU. The 8655 just adds CDMA support. The ARM CPU core is exactly the same.

I agree that the differences are minor.

          • Kevin

Except for the $150 difference, haha. The Thunderbolt is a severely overpriced Inspire.

          • LT

I guess u may think the difference(s) in the two to be minor but I think u guys may be overlooking one fairly substantial difference…the network! Not to mention the better coverage from Verizon, the 4g networks from AT&T’s HSPA+ and Verizon’s LTE are not even comparable. AT&T’s HSPA+ customers promised 4G are only seeing 1-3mbps down & 200-500kbps up, whereas Verizon’s LTE customers are seeing 7-15 mbps down (in my area, ATL, I’ve seen as as high as 26) and 3-6 mbps up (I’ve seen 8)! Granted these speeds may drop slightly when the network gets taxed but common sense can tell u its no comparison.

        • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCJLK3KgzyQ mfranke

          Network network network.

The Thunderbolt sports 4g LTE, not rebadged 3g HSPA+ The Inspire is lucky to hit 4mbps with perfect coverage. At CES the Thunderbolt was hitting 15mbps down and people are reporting as high as 26mbps burst speeds for it with 8mbps uploads.

I ditched AT&T for Verizon and couldn’t be happier. Went from spotty coverage to perfect coverage. Haven’t dropped a single call with my Incredible.

The Thunderbolt also has no 3rd party application block, has a kickstand and is bundled with a 32gb microsd card. Oh, and skype video chat.

          So yeah, there are differences.

  • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

No one cares about this! What about the tweet that droid-life put out saying that they received e-mails, stating that people were getting calls from best buy about the thunderbolt?! Anyone get a call?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1276750673 Earl Painter

What are the specs on that dell phone, I kinda like the looks of it.

  • Anonymous

    Ya dang hype-beast. :P

  • Stephen D

The Nexus S would be my choice out of all of them, since the Atrix is locked, the Thunderbolt isn’t stock, the Venus is WP7, but the NS is stock Gingerbread. No matter, they all blow the iPhone away.

  • Anonymous

So I have read a few threads about this phones release date.. My question, has VZW changed their announcement from CES stating Q1 2011? And I am not talking about their twitter or FB page, I dont think people should be upset with VZW at all since we are still in Q1, just relax it will come then you will forget about this whole mess, I just really find it hilarious that people are getting pissed because they read somewhere that someone said something that heard something that it could be the 24th. Just my thoughts

  • http://www.facebook.com/basilm Basil Mahmud

Anyone who cares that an Droid branded device is on this site should learn to get laid and not care bout this kind of shit.

    • Tcal

Could you structure your statement in a manner that makes it cognizable please?

    • XorDie

why are you on this site then…?

    • Anonymous

Well damn i got laid yesterday and i do care about this shit..

    • Anonymous

I got laid by 72 virgins

      • Anonymous

        72 Virginians??? WOW!!!

  • Please…Stop…

Kellex…you are a trooper, and we are thankful for all the reporting that you are doing re: Thunderbolt, but really…at this point in time there should only be TBolt posts relating to one of the following:

    1 – Release Date
2 – Release Date being pushed back

Seriously, people are no longer rational regarding this phone, myself included. The above are the only news items on the TBolt that matter at this point. The rest just serves to p!ss people off. And that’s not a knock on you, that’s a knock on HTC and/or Big Red for the utterly effed up way they have handled this phone’s release to the public.

    • Tcal

      +1

    • Muddy B00ts

Also pricing of the data plan. I care about that just as much as the phone itself.

      • Tcal

        +1

  • Ten10point

I am not going to mess with the Thunderbolt. Moto Bionic is going to be a much better phone with out all of the crap that we have went through for the thunderbolt. I hope lol who freaking knows anymore!!!!!

    • LT

You can call it much better if you want and have it! I have had an og Droid & my sister has an x, I loved my of Droid with vanilla and want no part of the horrible blurification! So ill leave u with blur, the locked bootloader (most likely) and the 512 gbs of ram…ill take the 768gbs, beautiful sense & the almost as fast 2nd Gen snapdragon

  • Eric

Can we please take down an.droid-life.com if were not gonna but post like this one up over there.

    • Eric

The Thunderbolt is a Verizon device. That’s what we cover at this site. Verizon Android devices.

      • Cdejesus1119

Kellex why dont you merge the sites. As much as i want to know about verizon droids.. its good to know about the others and to switch back and forth gets ya know… redundant.

      • Tcal

PLEASE! Arguments over the site’s name & what you cover could be easily avoided…

      • Eric

It’s free shit to download to your phone. It doesn’t matter what carrier it’s for, you should enjoy downloading things. We posted up the Optimus 2X dump and no one bitched at that. But now guys like you feel the need to on every single post. It’s ridiculous.

And not that I need to remind you, but this is MY site.

          • Eric

Are you done crying yet? LOL. YOUR the one who made the second site YOUR the one who stated before when you started it how the news would be separated. I am just reminding you that YOUR not following YOUR own rules. I really don’t give a flying f*ck what you do but stick to your guns. YOU made second site for a reason, right? Then use it for that reason. Seems pretty stupid not to.

          • Muddy B00ts

dude, you suck. Do you push everybody around who does one thing different that what they declared they would do? Do you go to other blogs and bully authors and moderators? I bet YOU’RE (notice the apostrophe and the re, you missed it 3 times) the kind of sadistic kid who killed neighborhood cats. Quit whining, get a life, and enjoy the FREE news that kellex and the gang work to bring us, instead of whining about where a story belongs.

          • Eric

who the hell are you? Sorry professor why don’t you go back to teaching class. Oh and btw “you suck” thats a good one. I dunno how i could top that. LOL!

    • Tcal

Kellex, just rename the site VZW-life; it will make life so much better for everyone.

      • Anonymous

If that will get people to stop complaining like privileged children, then I might.

        • Anonymous

It won’t get people to stop complaining. However, maybe you could rename it STFU-Life! It never ceases to amaze me how many people try to tell you how to do your job. All future complaints should be directed to: http://tinyurl.com/294vgzr

Have I told you that I love you lately? :P

          • Anonymous

Yeah its getting really old with the hate comments and if you even say anything to support this site u get compared to Mubarak.

          • Eric

            so whats happening in Libya?

          • Eric

i’m sorry i’m sorry what i meant to say what HAPPENED in Libya?

        • Anonymous

Droid-Life is fine, but merging the two sites would be ideal I feel. I do care about the other non-VZW Android devices as well. Also, down the line when every carrier is using LTE and phones are easily swapped between networks via SIM card switching, there probably won’t be carrier-branded Android devices anymore. We might see this as soon as the dual-CDMA+GSM iPhone 5 this summer and soon after the LTE Android phones that work on both VZW and AT&T.

          • Mike

Carriers are way too greedy. I expect them to keep the current trend of carrier locked down phones

    • Icecold715

The thunderbolt is a high end phone that is what is covered on this site!

      • Tcal

By High-End you mean last year’s “high-end”, right?

        • Icecold715

This phone is still right up there with any phone released this year, also its not locked down like moto phones are.

          • Tcal

It’s just a VZW Evo updated to share characteristics of the various “high-end” phones that were produced last year (with the notable exception of a 4G radio).

  • Anthony G

People still read print? 2011 people.

    • Anonymous

I love magazines. Sometimes you just need to actually hold something in your hand that isn’t a mouse…wait that could be taken out of context…

      • Anonymous

“Sometimes you just need to actually hold something in your hand that isn’t a mouse…” Agreed, an Android phone or Tablet is a great alternative.

    • Devin Jones

      Haha ikr?

  • Anthony G

People still read print? 2011 people.

  • Cliff05rsx

I just watched a video on youtube of an unboxing of the atrix….. and on the back of the phone it hhas a fingerprint reader that you can use to lock and unlock your phone……. that is freaking awesome. i hope the droid bionic has this also

    • Tcal

No fingerprint scanner on the Droid Bionic my friend.

I like how the droid-life logo fits in so seamlessly with the article.

  • Zaire2005

The best phones lmao yea ok

    • Anonymous

      Yup, deal with it.

  • Kevoskee

I recommend Verizon to get its act together about the thunderbolt.

    • http://twitter.com/vblok0910 Chris Vitorino

I also recommend that they release the damn phone too!!!

      • Motta2003

Spoke with the BestBuy rep….he said he was told by the end of the month. I guess it’s good there are only 6 days left. Not that I’m putting much stock in any date that is offered to me now.

        • Anonymous

I called last night and they told me that it should be available tomorrow (the 24th). We’ll see.

          • Jhnegbrt

            tomorrows the 23rd isn it?

          • Kevoskee

I think the 24th is in two days and I think Best Buy don’t know what they are talking about but maybe I’m wrong about both lol

          • Anonymous

Right… Thursday. Getting a bit impatient here.

  • Anonymous

The headline of that story is almost spot on. It should read, “The Best Phones Don’t Begin “I.” :-)

    • Mrpicolas

It should read the best phones need sent to me…. lol (I have problems)

      • Anonymous

My phone was sent to you, and even though it’s semi-retired, I think it’s the best. I also have problems… :-)
