ROM: Apex 1.4.0 by Fabolous Released for DROIDX and 2

One of our favorite developers, Fabolous, released his new Apex 1.4.0 for the DROIDX and DROID2 earlier this week and really polished up the look and feel.  He got some help from the Liberty ROM crew to make what was already a good ROM, really great.  You’ll find a new boot animation, toolbox, current versions of all the core apps, and a bunch of fixes.

If you are coming from Apex 1.3 you can probably update straight to this new version, but if you are coming from anything else including Liberty, you’ll need to do a full wipe.

Download:  DROIDX | DROID2

Changelog:

- New Apex Toolbox (Terminal Based) to customize the ROM to the max
– New Boot Animation (thanks tntdroid!)
– New Background, Ringtone, Notification Tone (change of pace!)
– Taller GB Keyboard, same size as MT Keyboard (thanks kejar31!)
– Removed Data Throttling (thanks droidxchat for an awesome utility!)
– Core Apps all updated to latest versions (Gmail, ADW Launcher, Market, Search, etc.)
– Blacked out Google Talk app (ty kejar31!)
– Fixed Mms.apk w/ Android 2.3.2 routing fixes (won’t send to the wrong person!)
– MusicMod back by default, supports lock screen controls (ty kejar31!)
– FC @ Startup fixed (no more wait, power, reboot cycle!)
– Updated JRummy overclocking script (ty JRummy16!)
– Option to install leaked Motorola “Connected Player” in Toolbox
– Finally updated the Swype theme to “Blackout” (ty javroch!)

Full support can be found at this thread.  DONATE.

where is the blacked out Google Talk app? In the toolbox?

  • Anonymous

I forgot to mention, I do miss one simple thing from Liberty… The beautiful dialer and call log threading!

I hate the ugly Motobull$h!t dialer in Apex. And damn right I voted that “it will keep me from buying another Moto phone” ever again. HTC here I come.

  • Scott

This has to be the worst version of Apex I’ve run… So slow and laggy, not to mention I tried uninstalling apps through the toolbox but they all still pop up. Going back to Liberty 1.5.

    • Anonymous

It’s quite the opposite with me…. I guess every Droid X is different

After a month and a half of countless reboots, battery drains, unlock issues, SBFing, backups, Rom flashing, and 2 replacement Dx phones, I’m finally settled on Apex 1.4. Decided to try this the other day over Liberty 1.5 and now my phone is just perfect after all that trouble. Battery life is the most important thing to me above and beyond all else. What’s a phone or a great rom when you are limited in the ways you’re able to use it because of battery life? Thanks to a “Fabulous” developer and his beast Rom my phones getting anywhere from 18-30 hours of battery life depending on usage with no reboots, slowdowns, unlock issues, etc. I just miss the customization of Liberty, mostly the ease of use although lucky for us Apex users that part is covered all the way.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FAB!

Agreed… ijad too many issues with Liberty 1.5… been running Apex 1.4 and it’s amazing

  • havensed

this is the most amazing, easy to use, easy to install, battery loving Rom ever……

  • tkilla

Yeah I used liberty 1.5 for about two weeks when one day it rebooted out of nowhere, like usual, but never rebooted. Bricked for no reason out off nowhere. Major bummer.

  • Myersjesse77

Where do you find the toolbox? How do go about adding blur items back on and connected player …?

    • Anonymous

I had this same problem. Open up terminal emulator… type “su” then enter….type “apextoolbox” then enter.

    • pdizzle

Terminal emulator. Type su(enter) then apextoolbox(enter). And voila u will get toolbox.

  • Jbfickler

From reading ALL the posts and whatnot, I have been running this APEX rom on my droid X and it is seriously the Fastest, Quickest, and most responsive rom EVER. I love it

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

Is there a gingerbread ROM for the Droid X?

    • Anonymous

      No… blame the locked bootloader

  • Okanekp

Is there anyway some one can port this to the D2 global. My D2 broke and they sent me this phone

    • Jacob

I am not sure there is way you can just ‘port’ a ROM, with the D2 Global there is a lot of extra that needs to be done to get custom ROM’s.

  • Myersjesse77

Droid you need to wipe if coming from rooted stock?

    • Jacob

yes, you need to wipe data and cache if coming from any ROM/stock.

  • Jacob

hey, for those having troubles with anything, visit droidxforums dot com and visit the ROMs section, seems a lot of people here are having issues they should not be having and are blaming the dev’s and shouldnt be :D

  • Jeremy

I see everyone complaining about liberty but i jsut went from apex to liberty because of all the stupid problems with apex. ive been on liberty for a week now and i must say im not going back to apex, i haven’t had a single hiccup from liberty yet

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

So you haven’t even tried this version of Apex but felt the need to warn others?

  • Drew

The link is down! :( Came home from a long hike to discover the news of 1.4.. go to download and… bummer!

    • http://twitter.com/mikeinrichmond mike

      He’s got it fixed now…

  • wheels

I’m not going to bother getting into an apex vs liberty pissing match, I’ll just say that I love this rom. I used to use tranquility but I found myself missing certain aspects of blur. fab made a believer out of me and I ain’t going anywhere.

  • Anonymous

could someone post a mirror? the server for the download is broken

    • http://twitter.com/mikeinrichmond mike

Try again, Fab just posted it’s fixed now..

  • Mal0u491

I can not download. It say website unavailable and rom manager spouts off error msg for any of the devs rom.. what am I doing wrong?

  • Anonymous

HELL YA!!!!!!!!!!!! This is my favorite ROM, much better than liberty IMO

  • mckeller

I would just like the new dialer in Liberty that is in Apex

  • Jamerson90

    Fabdroid is down. Any mirrors?

  • http://fabdroid.com Andrew Xie

My site (fabdroid.com) is down. I think this article may have broken it ;) I’m getting this resolved with my provider asap. Sorry about that. In the meantime, if someone’s got mirrors, feel free to post them up!

…And the toolbox won’t work until I get the site back up, no way around that, sorry :-(

    • http://fabdroid.com Andrew Xie

Mirror for the Droid X version: http://www.mediafire.com/?hbw3nye4lv0s8n3

    • http://fabdroid.com Andrew Xie

And the site is back up!

There’s a 1% chance the links will go back to my host, otherwise, you’ll most likely hit Mediafire. Sorry about the extra click!

Awesome! Can’t wait to update. On another note, has anyone else noticed problems opening google maps with the previous version of apex? Mine would stutter and occasionally fc… hope that’s fixed in the new version :)

Yep, HDMI is good on Apex. Main reason I never left Apex

Wow this couldn’t have come at a better time for me. I was so sick of the FC on boot that I downloaded liberty last night and was going to install it tonight. This will save me the trouble of having to redownload everything now. Not that most of it is hard but the stupid battle.net authenticator part is the worst. Stupid Blizzard. I swear they give account details away on purpose some times.

  • Djspikezz

Can anyone explain what the Data Throttling changes/does??

  • Uncle paul

no one else had the issue in liberty 1.5 where jrummys script took over their device and ended up killing their touchscreen?>

    apex 1.4.0 FTW –

    • Anonymous

Yes my phone started buggin out

  • Uncle paul

Apex 1.4.0 rocks nice and fast, and super stable if i lay off the overclock modules out there..

  • Uncle paul

And lets hope that Apex 1.4.0 does not totally jack your phone like Liberty and jrummys little “script” did to mine…

  • David

Liberty 1.5 is out too…. but I did notice the battery life isn’t as good as the 1.0 version

  • FortitudineVincimus

ever noticed that nearly every dev mentioned is “One of our favorite developers”

    • DroidzFX

they wouldn’t be worth mentioning if they weren’t a favorite. Favorite meaning a reputable dev who does quality work.

      • FortitudineVincimus

        it’s called pandering

        • Anonymous

Does someone piss in your Cheerios each morning? You’re comments are frequently quite bitter. Dr. Droid is upbeat and gracious, and you call it pandering? Pandering is aimed at getting something in return. Dr. Droid is giving credit where it’s due. Please cheer up man. :-)

        • http://twitter.com/NovembersDirge The Observer

You’re probably an i*hone user that is jealous because (s)he can’t flash different ROMs on his phone.

      • Djspikezz

Well Darkslide build a solid ROM and it gets no love… Also Drew Garen’s Lexlite 3.0 came out and hasn’t gotten any love either and they are both very solid ROMS :)

        • Djenks24

OK, my kid just got taken to lunch by the principal for excelling in reading, why didn’t the local paper write an article? Wait? What?

        • http://twitter.com/Paulw252 Paul Wiss

They seem to be a little behind in reporting about things like this. I updated from Apex 1.3.1 to 1.4.0 a little less than a week ago. . .

    • Anonymous

So we should post shit from our least favorite devs? We seriously cant do anything right for some of you people anymore. All you do is bitch bitch bitch about everything. Dont like it? Go start your site. At least quit ruining the experience for everyone else.

      • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Agreed. The entire Droid Life team is great, and this site seriously kicks ass. Don’t listen to the idiots…they will continue to complain. It doesn’t matter. You can do something right, and they’ll still find a way to complain, whine and cry about something so minimal it’s ridiculous. Just continue to do what you do best and ignore the idiots among us. You guys rock.

      • Anonymous

“We seriously cant do anything right for some of you people…” That’s the vocal minority. The rest of us freakin’ love this site!

“Go start your site.” It looks like droid-strife.com is available. ;-)

PS: Tell Tim to get his o-Tato back in here.

        • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

          Droid-noobs.com is also available.

          …lol.

      • Djenks24

You guys are still doing a great job, I’ve been around for a while now and have seen some of the negative comments. Don’t get down on yourself, there are still a lot of us out here that love this site. When I get a tweet about android, I wait until you guys post about it to make sure its right. Good job, and keep up the good work. Don’t let them get to you!!!

      • Irish22022

        whoaaaaa!

feisty. I just thought he was kidding about the developer comment? I think it’s kind of funny too. Not a big deal, you only seem to mention great devs, It’s just funny.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aran-Deibel/597564550 Aran Deibel

Seriously dude! These guys bust their tails for us. They bring us quality info and help if needed. You must be new here but you are not required to download anything. Maybe you should take your pandering conspiracy theories elsewhere. One love, Kellex!

So is there a guide some place to backing up your apps that your currently have (and maybe the state your currently at) then resetting to SFB then moving to this or Liberty 1.5 roms?

Apex has the better parts of Blur.

The battery life on this beast is awsome. And it is pretty fast. Love it. My #1 go to rom. Keep it up Fab.

  • http://twitter.com/JBod Justin

I found liberty 1.5 to be very buggy. Is this better or worse?

    • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Really? You must have done something wrong, then, as even though I’ve only been using Liberty 1.5 for almost a week, I can’t say that I’ve seen any notable bugs. None.

      • Dman27

it loaded perfectly had it on her for a while, I only get a force close about once or twice a week randomly. The only other issue I had was with overclocking it, the phone got significantly slower and laggy to the point where i had to just do a power cycle

        • Dman27

whoops that loaded in the wrong spot sorry

I used it for about a day, then started getting FCs on keyboard, market, games… almost constantly. It was crazy.

      • Anonymous

Liberty 1.5 was so bad I went back to stock.

Screen going black and phone restarted, or dimming of the screen and freezing was a problem that rom has very badly.
Lock the phone, unlock a bit too much and you can have the problem occur.

        • http://twitter.com/JBod Justin

I also went back to stock, until I had to re-flash it to remove the Liberty boot screen (which is a known bug). Kept it long enough to change back to stock, and dumped it. Shame too. I really liked it.

          • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

And yet I’m still using Liberty without anything in the wrong. That’s strange, eh?

          • http://twitter.com/JBod Justin

Maybe you’re right… I’m still relatively new to flashing roms. Liberty 1.5 was my second. But I followed the standard procedure. Who knows. Judging by some responses, I guess count yourself lucky.

          • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Yeah, I’m actually pretty new to flashing roms, as well, and yep, followed all the instructions in such a way that you’d think nothing could go wrong, but it still can I guess. And who knows, Liberty could mess up in the future(I hope not!). Besides, in a month or two, I’ll probably try something else as I like to keep my options open, and in terms of roms/themes, change don’t hurt.

          • http://twitter.com/JBod Justin

Word. I may give Darkslide a try, maybe Apex if people say it’s good.

          • Tex

I like Liberty but I have had some of the same issues, won’t wake-up and I often lose the GPS satellites especially if I receive a call while navigating.

          • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

It’s funny…sometimes my phone wouldn’t wake up after a power off/power on or battery pull and I was using the stock ROM..

But still haven’t experienced any of these issues yet with Liberty/BigDX Cyrstal X, so no idea.

          • Bobniborg

If you want a ROM that is very stock-like but way better on battery and such… Apex is the one. VERY stable, I’ve used 1.3 for a few months and only had 2 force closes. compared to 2 a day on stock.

          • Irish22022

okay… I’m sorry, but I have to point out that on the liberty rom thread in droid forums, there are over a thousand incredibly happy users. If you’re having issues, then that’s a bummer, I haven’t had a single bug, and find it to be the most stable launcher I’ve ever tried, and also the most detailed.

Any noobs deciding on a ROM, go to the droid forums liberty thread if you’d like a detailed look at the ROM. A few bad experiences can be recounted for any ROM.

          • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Take a look and judge for yourself, that’s it if you haven’t installed Liberty yet.

          • http://twitter.com/JBod Justin

So what you’re saying is “Do some research?” Great idea! I wish I’d thought of that.

          • Dsears452

Liberty has been and always will be the absolute worst!!!! Way too many really unusable bugs.

          • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

I have a love hate relationship with the Liberty Rom. I have had similar problems with Liberty 1.5. I’ve even SBFed and tried reinstalling and still have freezing, force closes, bad battery life (5-7 hours at the most, even after a battery “retraining”) etc. Just to many problems… I think I’ll try Apex out.

          • Anonymous

apex is amazing, it has amazing battery and its really fast. ive flashed all of the libertys, fission, gummyjar, rubix, apex and apex is the best. followed by fission then rubix then libery and gummyjar are tied

        • iTpHo3NiX

Never had any problems with Liberty 1.5 at all. I was originally on Apex, but I went to Liberty because GPS (turn-by-turn navigation) just would not function and I was getting TERRIBLE battery life. Now with Liberty, and a few tweaks (my phone also overclocked) running at 1.3GHz works flawlessly with no hiccups. You guys should open up the toolbox and start tweaking around to get the most out of your liberty rom (oh yeah I’m on the Droid X)

      • http://twitter.com/azurikai Austin Witherow

yeah i used it for like 3 weeks and then out of nowhere it bricked my phone. it will get you eventually. don’t worry.

I too have been on Liberty 1.5 for about a week and have nothing to indicate it being “buggy”. My D2 has been smooth as silk with it.

        • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Same, but on my Droid X!

    • Uncle paul

much snappier and much better battery life for me.

      • Uncle paul

with Apex that is over Liberty 1.5

      • http://twitter.com/JBod Justin

        No issues with FC?

    • Anonymous

To all you people having issues. Ive owned the droid x since launch day, and ive been flashing custom roms on it since we’ve had the ability to do so. I have found that it is important to flash an sbf first. When going from any rom to any other rom, without sbf first, it’ll run buggy. But if you do a whipe and then sbf, any rom runs smoothly.

      • Djenks24

Thanks for the tip, I’ve also owned a Droid X since launch day. I’ve also read another post, if you set memory to 50 mb it will stop the rebooting. Haven’t checked it out yet, but I will. Sticking with Apex 1.4 for a while though.

      Better… just my opinion

Not buggy to me but also nothing really special

  • Igotadroid

Not new to roms but what is data throttling? I’m running tranq 3.7 and never heard of it. Any links to how/what to do to get rid of it? Can’t find anything on the forums…

    • DroidzFX

Data throttling is Verizon limiting your download speeds based on your location (if network bandwidth is an issue in your area you may have it on by default) or how much you have downloaded ( say exceeding 5 GB in one month)

    • Anonymous

Its kinda like a bandwidth cap for active data transfers. Basically doesn’t let your phone send/receive data as fast as it wants to.
If you uncap it your internet etc… should be a little faster.

  • Kevoskee

Funny how categories for this post say Droid instead.of droidx. I got excited for a second

Why? It’s not like it’s Gingerbread, or something (which any respectable DL reader ought to have at least tried on their Sean Connery Droid).

Major salt. I don’t want to get whiny, but COME ON! The Global sales are nearly equal to the Droid2 sales, yet only one dev (team defuse) has released any roms, or shown any interest in making roms.

Honestly, this is my favorite ROM. Had it running for a couple of days, and the amount of customization is unreal. Even more so than Liberty IMO. You can have as much or as little Blur as you want, and it runs great. Apex Toolbox is easy to use as well.

I think there’s a lot to be said about these minimal Blur ROMS (Apex and rubiX Blurry, and I guess now Fusion), as opposed to the completely non-Blur ROMS, in that the user can, at will, install or remove Blur apps. Apex is a great, great ROM and I will definitely be switching over to this new version this weekend.

No thanks, Liberty 1.5 is truly all I would ever need in a ROM.
