Best Buy Will Hold a Pre-sale for the Motorola XOOM Starting February 17th

Best Buy is really starting to gear up for the launch of the Motorola XOOM.  We received confirmation earlier that it will be priced at $799 and that at least a 1-month data plan will be required to unlock WiFi on it, but that’s not all.  For those of you wishing to lock one down prior to its February 24th launch date, you are in luck.  BBY is prepping a pre-sale which starts next week on the 17th we are being told.  Units should arrive in store by the 20th, but obviously you won’t be able to pick them up then.

Cheers ____!

  • I don’t think you’re going to have to worry about being able to saunter into BB on day one and pick one of these up off the shelf…. At $799 a pop, they’re hardly going to sell out in most locales.

I’m keeping my rooted nook color close by and my wallet in my pocket until this tablet idiocy shakes out more fully.

There is no guarantee that any of the competing devices will be any cheaper than the Xoom. The G-Slate is going on sale in Europe for $1399 USD. The Tab sold for $599 don’t you think the 10.1″ with double the hardware specs will sell for $799, especially since they Xoom will be successfully selling for $799.

It looks like the $799 is the subs price and the $1200 is the full retail.

    • k6tcher

Maybe the $1200 is a “placeholder” for the actual price, but why not just list the actual price OR no price at all right now? Saying the tablet cost $1200 (when it may not) is like Verizon, Best Buy, & Motorola shooting themselves in the foot especially after the overwhelming bad press the $800 – $900 price has already received.

I guess they WANT Apple to continue to dominate. Hey maybe the shareholders of Moto are also have more stock in Apple?

The price of this tablet and the Thunderbolt is killing Android. Wake up Google!!!!!! They are using your free OS and charging a premium for it like iOS.

  • k6tcher

    Bwahahahahahahahah!
    $1200 @ Best Buy

Here is my f*ckin’ arm and leg too!

I like the tablet but there is NOTHING that ANYONE can say to justify that price.
If you defend a $1200 price tag, you are an idiot….
…. and possibly a little mentally unstable on top of it.

    Moto Xoom @ $1200 = Apple iPad 2 Win
(and I will never own an Apple product… but neither the Xoom apparently)

Does anyone know what the data plan requirement for the Xoom is? Do I only have to pay one month at $20 then will be able to cancel and keep using WIFI? I bought a couple Galaxy Tabs for my daughters and they made me pay $20 data plan for both then said I can cancel after a month.

  • Jason

Date is subject to change. That is… If the iPad 2 comes out and pushes the launch of this back.

  • Dtyc

    Goodbye Moto

  • Anonymous

way overpriced….compete with the iPad on pricing or be left behind

    • Arun01

..yep i agree with you @basehitter3…the Xoom will cost $900 out the door lol..for that much that thing should be sporting a I5 processor & 4 gigs of ram yet it only packs a Tegra 2 processor & 1 gig of ram…smart shoppers will soon realize that there will tablets having those same specs in less than a month for half the cost lol….some people never learn.

  • JRogers1978

I plan on picking up a xoom on launch day and returning it if I find that the G slate or anything else coming out soon is cheaper/better. I’m a Best Buy Reward Zone Premier Silver member so it extends my return time from 14 to 45 days and gives me zero restocking fee! So it’s like a free (minus the $20 3g plan) 45 day trial for me. I would just wait to see what else comes out but when I go up to bed I get stuck watching my wife’s horrible tv shows (ie. Jersey Shore, TMZ, etc.) so this will alow me to play on my xoom and watch Comcast’s On Demand on it.

    Can’t wait!

I’m sure there will be a huge line waiting for this…NOT!

  • Arun01

Just buy The Dell Streak 7..or if you like 10inch tablets ..just wait until Dell releases their 10inch tablet which is already being talked about as we speak. The Dell Streak 7 & the 10 will both be running honeycomb so why waste money on a $900 Xoom….lol…For me to $900 for a Xoom .it would have to have an I5 processor & at least 4gigs of ram..think about it.

  • As much as I’d really like to have a Xoom, $799 is too expensive, and having to buy a month of data just to use wi-fi is extortion.

  • Arun01

I got the Dell streak 7 which pretty much has the same specs as this tablet..minus 3 inches & a little ram..so why pay $500 more for this thing lol…Plus Honeycomb will be running on the Dell Streak 7 also…the Xoom won’t be the only tablet to get that OS…what a waste of $800 lol.

    • Anonymous

dell streak 7. pretty much the same specs.

      k

      • Arun01

…..umm yea they both have a tegra 2 dual core processor the Dell Streak 7 has 512mb ram the Xoom has 1g ram (only 512mb more..big deal)..& for me those are the things that matters..via performance of the device itself..like i said before ..for $900 the Xoom should have at least a I5 processor & 4gigs of ram … for that price.

        • Anonymous

200% is a pretty big number. Oh but wait, you want 4 gb of ram, but ram doesn’t matter.

The main point of a tablet is the touchscreen itself.

Given the diagonal of 7 vs 10.1, we can figure out the total screen area. going by hypotenuse, determining the other two sides, then using simple math to determine half the screen size: http://www.themathpage.com/atrig/30-60-90-triangle.htm and then doubling that.

          dell 7

          21.20998 sq inch

          xoom

          44.13696 sq inch

oh gee, there’s that silly doubling again. Three inches in screen size equals way more real estate than you expect… the same as how doubling the resolution (from 320×240 to 640×480 does more than double the screensize, it quadruples it).

I mean, but that’s sweet you got a dell, bro.

          • Anonymous

ixobelle is an idiot trying to show he knows something.

dell’s device performs very well and will get Honeycomb. at $449 it is a steal and very mobile given the size. so at nearly half the price you get a great device.

          • Arun01

…yep Ixobelle completly missed my point but oh well..and i dont think the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be able to get Honeycomb due to it’s processor.I’ve read many times that Honeycomb was only intended for Tegra 2 processors..which is why i get rid of my Archos 70 internet tablet.

  • Kjplaysguitar

I ll be pre ordering mine on the 17th as well, I am wondering what its going to take to tether from a droid?

  • Rick

Wow. One month data sign up for wifi is pretty fucked up. This is why apple will maintain their hold on the tablet space. If moto wants to overthrow the powers to be then they need to ditch the carriers.

    • Problem is, Apple’s a computer company, and they know how to sell the iPad like a computer. Motorola makes phones, and they’re used to selling hardware at ridiculous rates because they’re used to carriers subsidizing the hardware. This works for phones, but I don’t see a lot of people buying data plans for tablets on top of data plans for their phones and internet for their home. The carrier-subsidized cellphone model isn’t going to work for tablets.

After paying for one month data can you cancel data and use wifi? Only out $20 then. Even so – it’s still extortion and we should boycott these absurd policies. This is a highly competitive market and the message of no buyers would be quickly received if the early adopters could keep their pants on for a month or two.

So excited for the 24th! I plan on getting a TBolt with the alternate upgrade I’m eligible for from the month to month plan I’m currently on with my Galaxy Tab, then buying the Xoom and switching that data plan from my Galaxy Tab to the Xoom (then selling the Galaxy Tab) – I will be in new Android heaven! 🙂

    • Also the mobile hotspot of the tbolt is rumored to be free. If that is true you can totally drop the data plan on the Xoom and get 4G speeds now!

  • I’m not buying one because its over my price range…but I can’t wait to look at the unboxing videos on youtube! I’m pretty sure that’ll hold me over until the wifi version comes out…

I just got my Tax’es back and they have XOOM all over them!! Cant wait to pre-order on the 17th then go and buy it on the 24th!!!

  • PaulB

I am having a hard time believing they are launching both the thunderbolt and Zoom on the same day (24th). Wouldnt that be stealing thunder away from one of the products?

    • Anonymous

Why not? Get the Thunderbolt buyers into BB to play with the Xoom for a little bit? Makes total sense to me.

  • I care about the xoom if you dont care about the xoom you have the freedom to move on and not comment. If you hate it then you should just move on and let us real cusotmers get to enjoy this great news. A lot of people are mad about price but there is nothing you can do about it so move on and continue your daily routine because a big corporation is not going to listen to people that cant afford it. They will try and get customers that have a little higher income or people that are die hard they wont worry about the little man here

    • Robsmith Nikon

Ah…. as someone who has cash in the bank I can tell you its not just price that is stopping me. I will also point out that big corp WILL react to the market. Don’t come crying when the price drops by $200 bucks as new devices hit the market.

As for early adoption… I appriciate you going first at a higher rate so they can figure out the apps and such. I need photo apps… dslr tethering and such… get that sorted out and post reviews so I can decide between ipad2 and the other tabs. To be honest… figure out what the hell I need a tab for so I can decide if its worth the money.

      • Anonymous

Who’s gonna be crying? The person who waited around for 3 months for the price to drop or the person who got to enjoy their Xoom for 3 months?

        Have fun waiting.

        • Stephen

I agree. People tend to like immediate satisfaction. Many would prefer to pay 800 over 600 to get it sooner. Its the same principal if I were to say I’ll give you 100$ today, or 125$ 3 months from now. Most would take 100 today.

          • Thats called piss poor planning. Likely why I have several long term retirement plans and a very full money market account…. and most do not.

Tell you what… I will give you a $100 today if you will give me $150 in 3 months.

          • Stephen

Thats called a loan with interest…my example has no debt ramifications to the consumer…

My point is that immediacy pays off for a lot of people. While I don’t doubt that most will use this for pure entertainment, If people are using these for work, do you not think that over the next 3 months they can be more than $200 more productive? Being more connected makes people more money. For those that are even just buying it to have it, have just as much of a rationale. If it improves their current perceived quality of living, then kudos. Thats all that consumption is really based on – what utility will I get out of buying this that or the other? Obviously you, as a consumer, do not perceive any gained utility for purchasing this device at this time, and if there are many consumers on the same page as you, the price will drop quicker, and if not it will stay higher longer. No reason to bash some people for buying at certain price point. We are the ones that drive the markets, not just you.

I think it has less to do with instant gratification and more to do with
common sense. I’m not going to sit around for 3 months, on the off chance
that they’re going to reduce the price. As for the $100, yes, I would take
it now. I could easily invest that money and have $130 in 90 days.

        • Thats just the thing. Waiting for what?? I don’t really know how the Xoom or ipad would fit into my life, workflow or needs/wants. Its cool tech… its a cool toy… but what do I need it for? The android apps aren’t that big a deal… my Droid is just starting to get interesting. My brother waited until December to finally get a Droid X. What did he miss out on?? Bad apps… a long wait for flash… blah blah blah. Early adaption does not equal “best experience”.

What I don’t understand is why Moto wouldn’t release different versions to offer the best functionality to a variety of consumers. I don’t like much about Apple, but their release of the iPad was perfect. All the different types available immediately. Not 3G now, 4G in two months, WiFi-only sometime maybe never. If the Xoom was the first major tablet to the market, they could get away with this, but not after the iPad. It’ll be fine some of us die hard Android fans but to the average consumer? Nope.

      • Agreed 100%. This is a huge FAIL in the Android world. We are the android fanboys. Most of the world just buys what TV tells them to.

If there were a $500-600 wifi only XOOM, I’d have seriously considered selling my iPad and grabbing it. Oh well.

You should sell the IPad and use the money that you get from selling it to buy the Xoom !

  • k6tcher

Boy, I can’t wait! Going to buy 2 of these just a soon as hell freezes over. Probably give one to my wife. Might get a third one to attach to the hood of my car as a status symbol…

To everyone who is constantly saying… I’m not buying one, it’s too expensive.. STOP POSTING. If you aren’t buying one, then quit telling everyone why.. We all know why. It’s expensive… We get it…

For those of us who are buying one this news is very exciting.

    • Pope Wilson

I’m buying one .. when the price comes down.

      • Anonymous

i’m buying one at release. no sarcasm, no crying about it. i think 800 is a decent price for it. the only thing giving me any pause is that dual boot tablet announced yesterday by viewsonic. i intend to use this at work, and joining the domain would open a bunch of options.

    • Yeah travis I agree taking all the glory from us people who are buying it

      • Travis

Thank You all for posting my comment up to the top of the popular posts. I always read through the comments on Xoom stories looking for what other people who are buying it have to say and just sharing the general, “before christmas feeling” with you other tech nerds 🙂 I will def. be in line at BB this Thursday nagging someone to let me pre-order. I have heard that each store will have a min. of 5 units. My local store is small so I’m betting it will only be 5, but I hope to be #1 in that line 🙂

        • Joe

Well I’m assuming we’d be able to pre-order online for our local store, just as you can do with any other online order? Because I won’t be able to make it to my local store (well actually to the local store 30 min away in Delaware, to avoid sales tax!).

        • Anonymous

the point of the preorder is to determine the demand locally, so if your store came up with 10 preorders, (hopefully) BB corporate would ship 10+ units to the store for the release date. One for each pre, and others to sell on the spot.

I’ll be getting mine in Emerville, CA. Sales tax be damned.

    • Robsmith Nikon

What about those of us not buying it because the apps still suck… it does nothing that a $200 netbook can’t handle… its first gen tech which is often a bad buy… it has stupid ass data plan requirements… ipad2 is right around the corner as well as other similar devices which will obviously lower the buy in price…

      Can we still post?

      • Sparking22

The OG DROID was not a bad buy. I got one the week it was released and ill do the same for the Xoom

        • I agree… my Droid is still a great phone… lucky deal that it worked out like it did.

          • Spoken like a man in a two year contract 🙂

      • Joe

Well have fun watching iPad 2 handle all those flash sites, lol. Tried my brother-in-law’s iPad and absolutely hated the web surfing experience (not to mention how many times his wife has complained about the same thing). No thanks!

        • First of all… I agree that I prefer the internet on a platform like Android. Flash is not gonna matter much in a year or so. Websites are changing in an effort to available on ipads and such because… well… a lot of people have them.

Second… I don’t want an ipad2… I want the ipad2 to force down the price of overpriced crap like the xoom. $3000 was too much to pay for an LCD TV… I know… I waited and paid $1000 for mine. Now the same type of TV is about $500.

      • Well, guess you already decided before a spec was ever even given.

        • Specs will change and go up. My Droid is “old tech”. What do specs mean??

      • no

        • Ah well… guess life will suck for you as I post anyway and you can’t help but read.

    • Joe

Yup, I’m buying one too, first weekend of sale. And kudos for you for your comments about people who aren’t buying one who are b*tching about price or whatever other reason they have for not buying one. Its a solid amount of $$, but also a very solid device that we plan on getting a LOT of use out of! Can’t wait for the presale!

    • I’m not buying one because I don’t want a tablet. I wouldn’t buy the Xoom or the iPad. Am i allowed to post? There really is no tablet market. It is a lot like the UFC. People think because the UFC is popular that there must be a huge market for MMA. However all competitiors to the UFC are struggling to remain aflot. The reality is the market for tablets outside of iPads is very small. This Xoom will bomb and the iPad2 will outsell it by a ratio of 8 to 1. I am sure it will be an awesome tablet and will be a lot of fun to play with but the reality is the tablet market doesn’t exist because they serve no functional purpose.

      • Anonymous

pretty sure the tablet market is nothing like UFC, but maybe that’s just me.

        • You are not very familiar with metaphors are you.

          • DroidzFX

Your metaphor is just not very good. The competitors of UFC are struggling because they dont have the fighters everyone knows. People are not as inclined to watch fighters they dont know. The ipad will out sell Xoom because everyone already knows Apple. Doest mean Xoom or any Android tablet wont overcome Apple in the tablet market just like we have seen done with smartphones. Competitors have to build a reputation for themselves. I believe tablets do have a market since they are already being used in schools, hotels and hospitals. They technology is just not cheap enough yet to for the general public to buy into it.

        • You are not very familiar with metaphors are you.

      • davidinchelseama

They serve a functional purpose. They are great for consuming media in a straightforward manner. I have a Viewsonic G-tablet – $379.00 from Sears. It does what I needed a tablet to do – be a “coffee table book” to read the newspaper, books, magazines, comics, political blogs, entertainment sites, etc. Very simple, My laptop does the same thing, but the tablet loads faster, stays totally cool to the touch, and is light as a feather. Being able to hold something you are reading in a more book-like fashion is simply more organic, and comfortable. However, I’d never waste $800.00 on one. That’s INSANE. And to have to have ANOTHER contract – forget it.

Ugh…I reallyyyy want to buy a XOOM. Like a whole lot. But that effing price, man. Aghhh how can there be only one fcuking model? One price point? Dammit…I want the XOOM to win the tablet wars but Moto and Verizon are really making it hard. This is all very upsetting. I hope some news comes out regarding other retailers selling the XOOM before I possibly pre-order at Best Buy.

Who cares about the Xoom ? It’s over priced and moto sucks the big one. Locked boot loader. I’ll take pics of the the line at my best buy. I bet there won’t be one lol. Fail

    • Does one person qualify as a line?

      • William Everette

        How about two?

        • how about 3

          • Anonymous

            and 4

          • Robsmith Nikon

All headed to the same BB?? People will buy it of course… hell… some people bought the Edsel.

          • Anonymous

            5. I can’t waaaaaaaiiiiittt.

    • Sparking22

for some reason I think moto locks the bootloader on there blur phones only. I dont think the Xoom will be locked down.

    • prove the locked bootloader.
      (on the Xoom)

I’ll buy a xoom… from amazon wireless. I refuse to drop 7% extra on it in sales tax.

Then move to a red state.

      • MFG

        And what about red states?

        • Anonymous

Look it up, red states average a lower cost of living than blue states in everything from taxes to goods/services.

    • Joe

…or, like me, take a 30 min ride to TAX FREE DELAWARE!

      • Parrotheadmjb

I don’t have that option. Amazon is tax free for me, they ship fast.

    • MFG

When do we think it’ll hit Amazon? Same day?

      • Parrotheadmjb

I really really hope so, if not I’ll have to keep waiting. I don’t know how I’m justifying $799 but I do know I won’t pay $855 after tax….

With the HP TouchPad price rumored to be $699, the Xoom should be a no-brainer at this point. The Xoom gives you a better screen ratio, higher resolution, GPS, and a tablet-optimized OS.

Can’t wait to pre-order my Xoom in 6 days!

xoom tablet i really really want ill buy idc

  • Is there any word if these will be sold at other retailers on Feb 24th as well? I am WAY more turned off at having to patronize a Best Buy then I am at paying $800 and having to sign up for 3G to get WiFi.

      Beamish,
      Costco will have it. http://goo.gl/cLAVF

They are also waiving the $35 activation fee (but NOT the first month of data) by mail in rebate.

My enthusiasm seems to be dwindling down. I keep hoping for a typo, sudden change, intervention, an act of God, etc on that Tbolt retail price

  • Munstir

Let me ask something I know there’s a ton of thunderbolt posts and etc. but why release the Xoom on the same day as the Thunderbolt? Maybe it’s just me hoping we would see a sooner release date for thunderbolt.

You should throw up a poll to see what the feelings are about the price and whether or not people plan on buying the Xoom.

    • Anonymous

Good suggestion, I’m on the fence now on both Xoom and Tbolt

    • Anonymous

      It’s been done. http://goo.gl/JySnL

An overwhelming 89% say it’s too high.

      • Anonymous

        Thanks R2!

      • Anonymous

        …for them.

        • Anonymous

          Bragger.

That’s a lot of money Moto is losing, and could be making if they would have only planned to release the WiFi at launch. Stupid mistake!

          • Anonymous

Come on, the Xoom is only $100 more than the rumored TouchPad price, and the Xoom gives you a better screen ratio, higher resolution, HDMI out, GPS, and a tablet-optimized OS. The Xoom is also only $200 more than the full retail price of the Droid X.

People just need to stop being unrealistic.

          • I agree

          • ditto

          • Anonymous

the tablet market leader, is the $499 iPad. Moto needs to compete on price or they will never do well.

      • yea but they only did the poll with the thunder bolt priced at 250 not the 729 full retail

    • Anonymous

do the same for the tbolt. i was gung ho on buying until the 750 retail price!

  • Mr.Joe

    Motorola XOOM Tablet PlayBook?

    • MFG

It runs Android and Blackberry apps, naturally.

    • Fajnor92

The “PlayBook” is the game plan for when they will be receiving, selling etc. with the Xoom
