Thunderbolt Dummy Units Arrive in Stores Showing 2/14 Date

According to some of our VZW  friends, the Thunderbolt has been bumped from its 2/14 launch date, but that hasn’t stopped all of their marketing materials from arriving stores.  All TBolt related materials including dummy units were supposed to be on hand this week, so we now have proof that dates can actually be met without delays.  (Yes, that was a cheap shot.)  Oh, and it’s fitting that the date on these units happily says “Mon, Feb 14.”

Cheers @rusty_richards and @V3RDICT!

Htc’s facebook page says that in 6 days something big is coming. 8th + 6 = 14th. hope this is true

    • Wes

Maybe the announcement of the release date?

    • Anonymous

MWC. They are going to talk about new devices, such as the Pyramid and other next-gen things.

  • Hpradford

What u all aol to realize is that VERIZON WIRELESS has not said a release date this is all speculation. I prefer it be the 14th cuz that’d b awesome.

    • Hptadford

      Fail

I just heard they are delaying this phone because they are upgrading it to Tegra 2!!! WOW can this phone get any better? Tegra 2, 4G LTE, HTC SENSE!!!

      bs…

    • Anonymous

HTC will most likely stick with Qualcomm chipsets for their handsets. I don’t see them going Tegra2 when Qualcomm has a Snapdragon dual core around the corner.

    • Anonymous

The device has been made. Redoing millions of handsets with a new chip would mean multiple months of delay and recertification with the FCC, etc. Remember how it was supposed to come out in November, but they pushed it back three months to insert an LTE radio?

The delay is most likely related to the mobile hotspot stuff. They said it will come with hotspot, then they said due to technical issues they will make the mobile hotspot work a bit after release. Last week they said it would ship with mobile hotspot again, but today’s news implies that the mobile hotspot stuff didn’t work properly with LTE yet again, so they’d rather just push back the device as well until everything is ready. Maybe Skype will work out of the box as well with this delay.

  • Fredy

i just read that is being push back cause of skype mobile

  • NCX

Android Central says they might have delayed it because of Skype Mobile

I was playing around with the Incredible again the other day, and the overlay to what they put on top of Android really is nice. I have an X now, but in the future I may try out HTC, Motorola has been a little iffy as late.

I pre ordered a TB on Sunday at Best Buy and the guy told me the street date was the 14th and I had to put $50 down, then they gave me a $50 BB gift card for pre ordering, lol.

    • Anonymous

They did this for everyone who pre-ordered.

    • Fredy

no that gift card is to save you a spot you have to use that card on the Thunderbolt

      • http://twitter.com/piinkhibiscus bethinabox

You don’t HAVE to use that gift card on the Thunderbolt– you can use it on whatever the heck you want in the store. But the logical thing to do generally is to use it when you get the phone. Once you pre-order, your name is on a list in our system. You can give the gift card as a present to someone else for all we care.

Best Buy person! Good to meet ya. I’m a Google person. With no hand in anything except bug fixes. So, no leaks from me. But seriously, it’s nice to see some Best Buy people are interested in this stuff.

          • http://twitter.com/piinkhibiscus bethinabox

Hi Google person! :) It’s my job to be interested, I sell the darn things! ;) But yes, I am most definitely interested in this stuff. I pre-ordered my Thunderbolt already, hah!

          • Anonymous

I probably would have too, except for the fact that I used my upgrade on an R2D2.

          • http://twitter.com/piinkhibiscus bethinabox

Very nice! I have yet to actually see an R2D2 in person, but I still think it’s awesome, haha. I’m coming straight off an iPhone 4 on AT&T, so I’m pretty pumped about the change. Love my iPhone, but new toys are so much fun… And after playing with Android phones all day at work, I’ve grown quite accustomed to them so I can’t wait. :)

          • Anonymous

Nice to see that. The majority of people I know who like Apple products, when they hear I prefer Android, freak out and go all “Must Convert Android User”. Kinda scary, especially seeing as a lot of people at Google use Apple computers. But nice to see you kept an open mind, and enjoy your Thunderbolt; as for me, I have to wait for another upgrade (Upgraded right before policy change). And no 4G for a while either. :(

          • http://twitter.com/piinkhibiscus bethinabox

Ahh, not me. I am admittedly a big Apple junkie, I’ve had two MacBooks, countless iPods, two iPhones, but I will be the first to admit that Apple isn’t everything. While I do love the simplicity of my Apple devices, Android is an amazing platform that I can’t wait to own and encourage many of my customers to try. :D

          • Hoot352

Being a Best Buy person, besides the new buy back program, are there any other incentives to get the thunderbolt through best buy vs a Verizon store. This will be my first experience in the smart phone world. I’m definitely lookin forward to getting this phone.
From previous posts, it looks like best buy might still have the pre order going on and that it cost $50 to do it. Then they give you a $50 gift card. Does the original $50 go towards the phone so you can essentially get $100 towards the new phone? Or is the original $50 to reserve it and the gift card is meant to go towards the phone?

          • http://twitter.com/piinkhibiscus bethinabox

Well, I’d say one of the biggest advantages is our protection plan–covers any kind of accidental damage, normal wear & tear, etc–anything but loss or theft, pretty much. $10/mo for smartphones (really, any phone above $350 outright– or $15 for iphones, $7 for phones under $350) no deductibles, no limit to how many times you can break it. Can only get this on phones purchased at Best Buy. You should see some of the phones we get in for this plan–I’ve seen ones broken in half! :P For something like that, unrepairable, we’d send it out and it’d get approved for exchange in the store. It’s a really good deal IMO.

We also have an extended exchange period compared to VZW stores… They have their 14 day return/exchange policy–we can only do RETURNS for the first 14 days, but you can EXCHANGE your phone for 30 days. So if you don’t like the Thunderbolt (which I’m sure you will!) you can exchange it in our stores for a month.

Also, Best Buy employees don’t work on commission–we’ll offer our services and products, but won’t give you any less attention if you’re not interested. Whether or not you buy has NO effect on our paychecks.

I can’t speak for the BBYM near you, but the customer service in my store is damn good. I’ll do as much as I can for my customers so they’re happy.

As for the pre-order, you pay $50 to reserve a phone, but that $50 is given BACK to you in the gift card. You are out NO money currently. If you want, you can back out and use the gift card on something else in the store. It’s just reserving a phone for you, but you haven’t paid for it yet so there is no penalty in not getting the phone–but please, if you choose not to get the phone, let us know so we can sell it to someone else! So basically, you’ve got $50 towards the phone if you so choose.

…Wow. Long comment is long. But you asked. ;)

I don’t know if we should be excited or not. But hopefully this is a good sign

I personally don’t care about that as much, but I know plenty of other people do. Anyone who thought the Xoom was going to cost less than $600 was smoking crack, yes, even by a penny.

If it launches at $800, I’ll buy a Xoom, a case, and the speaker dock on launch day. If it comes out at $700, I’ll throw in the keyboard on launch day too, instead of waiting a couple weeks.

I personally think the sites ought to be merged. Android Life doesn’t get much traffic, and the brand has certainly grown passed the Droid franchise (even Moto on Verizon knows that; XOOM, anyone?).
