ShootMe Sees Major Update, Screencasting Added? (Updated)

Yeah, this is awesome.  We love taking screenshots and we also love ShootMe, so when we saw that there was an update available today that changed the UI and added the ability to “screencast”, we were super excited.  Thanks to Tato tipping me to this early this morning, I’ve been sort of absorbed in figuring out how it works.  Unfortunately, it appears to be the most finicky of options ever.

Update 1:  When you get your the Reject/Accept screen, you’ll hit menu and choose “Preferences.”  From there, you can choose the Screencast option which should start the minute you click “Hide”.  Once you are finished, the app is taking up to 10 minutes before the screencast you just made becomes available for viewing.  At least on my DX anyway.  Finicky, but cool.

Update 2:  Demo added.  For those of you running into issues with the screencasts showing up in your gallery, I suggest switching ShootMe back to regular “shake” mode and then taking a screenshot.  This seems to free up and prompt the app to release screencasts.

Is nobody using the Z4Root app found here, dowload it and then Shoot Me app and BOOM!!! rooted phone and screen capture, takes less than 5 minutes. Do it and quit crying, they guy (Klamath) who connects his phone to the USB and then does his thing on the computer is just doing too much work for something so simple, catch up with the times bro. Rooted DX baby!

Cool…except it would be nice if there was some kind of notification that its running or NOT running…

    • Chris Nimon

yeah, why isnt there something in the notification bar?

      • Anonymous

gonna assume that’s a sarcastic aside at dropcap, but you can never be too sure :)

If it isn’t – because people don’t want every screenshot to have an extra notification icon. Very minor, but it annoys me.

        • Chris Nimon

Not being sarcastic at all. It would be nice if the led blinked when this was running so we knew it was recording

So can anyone tell me why Google makes the process of taking screenshots so cumbersome? I mean, the iPhone does it right out of the box, no need for an app or anything. With my Droid X, I have to connect it in USB mode to my PC, with USB debugging enabled, then click on DDMS.bat and then choose Capture screen, in order to just take one. I mean, I’m glad you still can, but why isn’t this enabled right out of the box?

I know that Samsung devices do come with this feature enabled, but why don’t any other Android phones. The only one’s I’ve ever heard are the Samsung Galaxy S devices.

    • Anonymous

I can’t answer your question, but you obviously don’t have to go the route you described – just grab the app.

  • Mr.Joe

This app funked up my SD card. I don’t recommend it at all.

Is there no way to make it fullscreen while doing the screencasting? All it is letting me do on my Inc is just that small middle portion of the screen.

  • Jawshua

Man this drives me insane! Why can’t they make a screenshot app for non-rooted devices. And on Droid-Life it seems recently everything cool you showcase liken boot animations and other stuff is all for rooted phones. How about some love for us non-rooted users, I know for damn sure I’m not the only one that feels this way.

How about some new Droid or other phone new live wallpapers that are apk files? We used to see those all the time…. like I never saw a Droid eye for the Droid Pro?

It’s not hard to root nowadays brother, all you gotta do is download an app and let it run (Z4Root), easiest rooting app you’ll ever encounter and you can find it here.

  • Bucho2k

Oh my god, it’s breathe taking. ::rolls eyes:: I want my iPhone.

    • Jawshua

If you’re so pro Apple why do you come to a site for Droid news. Just because Verizon is getting an iPhone doesn’t make this site any more relevant to you. It’s not like any of these amazing freedom loving programs will ever see the light of day on an Apple device (this one excluded, because default screenshot is on an iPhone and iPod). But really what is the point, are you that in need of attention, or lonely? I’m sure they’re hundreds of Apple sites, or did they kick you out? :)

They come here to troll. They love that you respond too.

Now, may I have a moment on the soapbox? As the self-appointed biggest fan of Droid Life, I would like to recommend that folks spend some time browsing the older posts. In most cases, the answers to your questions are here. I wish I had a dollar for each time someone asked about Beautiful Widgets before Dr. Droid went “minimalist.” Anyway, this an incredibly helpful community, but… spend a few minutes looking for the answer, and I’ll bet you’ll find it. Before I sound like too much of an a-hole, I’ll step down from the soapbox.

      • ViggS

I am on this site most of the day can’t help if I miss something. How do you find something you know nothing about??? Ask a question.

And thank you by the way!!! :)

      • Chris Nimon

I wonder if thats why Kellex no longer uses BW :)

Ugh, I actually was overjoyed at this. As someone who uses ShootMe for this site a lot, I enjoy the new additions. However, having the ability to keep it from closing without notice would be great.

Nice, this will make explaining how things work on my phone so much easier.

    Pretty nice update!

  • droid51third

what theme are they using to have the launcher bar look like that?

    • Anonymous
      • droid51third

Do they make any type of dock like that for ADW??

        • Anonymous

My knowledge of ADW is equal to my skill at neurosurgery: nonexistent. I am a die-hard LP+ fan at the moment, and highly recommend it. I don’t think ADW supports custom docks, but I’d be happy to stand corrected.

          • droid51third

I like LP as well, just playing around at the moment.

          • droid51third

maybe i am a complete ruhtard, but where do i find the download for that dock? it could be that I am blind and drink to much, but any help would be appreciated.

          • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

Go to the post he linked to, simply save the picture on your phone or save it and transfer it to your phone (I recommend Chrome-to-Phone) and then go into LP’s settings (or Go Launcher, which also allows custom docks) and choose the picture as the background for your dock. Then download the transparent icon from below and set it as the icon for each app over the words.

    • M1ghtysauc3

Launcher bar? Huh? He is using Liberty 1.0 rom for the DX and that’s the stock theme but I’m not sure what launcher bar you’re looking at.

      • droid51third

        meant dock… sorry!

    Goodbye Drocap, hello ShootMe

    Downloading/updating now.

Is there an app with the option to take a screenshot using the camera button? If not, the light sensor option sounds intriguing.

  • Unexpected62

Does it save a video or lots of still images?

    • Anonymous

Well… videos are really lots of still images, but… it will save Huffyuv, Motion JPEG, or MPEG-4 at 3, 5 or 10 FPS.

+1 for the new Shootme icon. That pink Polaroid always annoyed me for some reason…

      • Anonymous

New icon is definitely an upgrade.

      • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Now…a “RecordMe” or some variation of ShootMe, would be incredible. The ability to “video record” whichever screen you’re on/want, would be invaluable.

I’m just really surprised no one has made something like that yet. Is it hard to do? Maybe it would be too demanding? Need a 1.2GHz processor, perhaps? Has to be something that kept developers from making a screen video recorder app.

  • Eric J

Anyone want to post an example screen cast

    • Anonymous

      Working on it. :P

      • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

I just updated ShootMe, and am trying to use the new Screencast option, but for some reason, that option keeps shutting down ShootMe. Also, how does it even work? lol
