How to: Overclock the DROID X or DROID 2

A lot of talk about overclocking the Droid X and 2 today, right?  Confused on how to actually get the job done?  What apps do you need?  What settings should you use?  We’ll do our best in this post to get you all set up, so that you can fully enjoy your Droid.

*Warning* – Overclocking and rooting your device is incredibly risky.  There is a chance that you could do permanent damage to your phone, just understand that you are doing this at your own risk.  Warned ya!

*DROID 2 AND DROID X ONLY

First Steps:

1.  You have to be rooted.  (Instructions)
2.  You need to have run Koush’s Boostrap.  (Droid X) (Droid 2)
3.  Create a backup in Clockwork Recovery.  (Instructions)

Overclocking:

1.  Download one of the new overclock apps.  (JRummy’s)  (Unstable Apps)
2.  Open up your app of choice (we used JRummy’s for this.)
3.  Tap on “Set Scaling Frequencies”.

*Note 1* – DO NOT choose to “Set Frequencies on Boot” yet.  We have to feel out a stable frequency on our phones first before making that decision.  If you choose one that is unstable and “set it on boot” your phone may never boot back up or you may have to flash a backup.

4.  Choose a kernel voltage.

*Note 2* - Here is the basic idea of a kernel voltage.  The lower the voltage, the cooler your system will run and you should see a longer battery life.

5.  Pick a frequency.

*Note 3* – When you tap on one of the listed frequencies, it will be set to your phone.

*Note 4* – Each frequency has a variety of slots which you can also set your phone at.   So just because you chose a 1.4GHz frequency, doesn’t mean you have to run it at that speed.  You could drop it down to 1.1GHz if you want.

6.  You have now set your phone for overclocking.

Using SetCPU:

1.  Download and install SetCPU from the market.

*Note 5* – This tool is used to set up your overclocked phone for optimal performance.

2.  Open SetCPU and choose “Auto-detect” from the first menu.
3.  It should recognize your device and also show your phone clocked at the new speed you chose above.

4.  From here you can set up profiles, a min and max speed and get your phone tweaked to your liking.

Benchmarks:

1.  Have fun showing off your newly overclocked phone with some benchmarks.  The two favorites are Quadrant and Linpack.  Both are available in the market.

Last Note:

1.  If you have found a stable frequency and a group of settings in SetCPU, you can think about setting these on “boot.”  What that means, is your phone will boot up overclocked and running however you set it up in the overclock app and SetCPU.  Again, this is risky and you will need a backup before doing this.

The overclocking process for the DX and D2 is still young, so be prepared for some hiccups along the way.

whenever i tap a ghz thing it just freezes, any solutions or reaons why?

    • Killer4247

Same her do you have koush bootstrap

  • Cloverbubu

do not see the app. sign

  • Shid

I installed Fission 1.1 and it worked flawlessly. However, I lost all my contacts and apps and had to re-root. So I decided to return to a previous restore and it STILL does not work. Power cycles after every frequency. Hopefully an update is in the works to get this thing going. It was fun for the 45 minutes that I was running 1.45ghz.

  • http://www.facebook.com/serio Austin Serio

Id like to see flash on these ^^

  • Avalide

Noob question, why is the bootstrap required to overclock a rooted device?

  • Roadglidde12

How does one get out of this boot loop if I accidentally chose set at boot before set scalling was done?

It states it is saved but then a boot occurs and i am re-set to stock.

  • Matrixfx187

Whenever I select a setting, my phone just reboots and is not overclocked. I've tried tons of different frequencies and they all do the same. What am I doing wrong? I'm rooted and have a D2 bootstrapped.

    • KleenDroid

After the updates it no longer works for the D2. When you choose a setting the phone simply crashes and reboots. I am trying to have some patience with this since it worked when it first came out yesterday. The updates have destroyed the program for now. If he cant fix it today I will refund.

having the overclock option with my droid x is amazing :D but even more so is using SetCPU and underclocking it when the screen is off. saves so much of my battery so i can text even MOAR.

  • Bromodo

It doesnt seem like its working for me. I set up Jrummy's app and choose a frequency but when I load up setcpu it just shows stock frequency o my d2…..

  • http://twitter.com/alken2626 Kenneth Holloway

This work perfect don't wait get it. i'm new to this and i very happy to be rooted and overclock. thank you to jrummy.
well done keep up the good work.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Jsenat Jensen Senat

confused…says im at 1300 max, 1300 min, but still saying 1100 mhz :/

  • Djxtreme30

Cant find the app… Can some post a link other then to the market place

  • Mr2turbo15

1400 its nice but 1420 is better!! Yup my android g2 overclocked to 1420..omg so fast so responsive so smooth..its like being on my computer..glitches what glitches?!! Sweet!!

    • http://twitter.com/bamf321 Clay Deichman

yaaaa… the problem is, we can go to 1.45 ghz, ohh and theres also somebody working on 2.0 ghz for the X and 2.5 ghz for the 2. so SUCK IT

  • Cordova505

I cant get it to work, it keeps saying “Error failed to install overclocking components” What did i do wrong? im on a rooted DX, its also saying that on my rooted D2…

  • Jaydog8819

I have mine set on ultra low voltage at 1.3 and is very fast and stable. I have a quadrant score average of 1865….

    Awesome….

    • http://www.facebook.com/Jsenat Jensen Senat

how..everytime i try, it goes into turtle mode and i gotta take out the battery, using a d2 or a dx?

  • Shid

I keep getting power cycled after I press ANY frequency. Anyone else having this problem? This is also on ANY voltage as well.

    • Kurtdl

I am having same problem….haven't gotten any resolution.

      • 3v Mike

yup same here just reboots after I select a new freq

        • 3v Mike

Ok so, I was running the Nextheme. I restored from a previous backup and VOILA it works like a charm.

  • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

I have mine stable at 1.2 on low voltage, which feels like a happy medium for me. It's gotten rid of the little lag I had, my battery seems better, and Quadrant is averaging 1600, which I feel great about. I don't need THE FASTEST phone in the wild, i just need it to work when I use it. Thanks for the instructions and thanks to the devs who have worked so hard!

My question, at this point, is this: Is there anything we're still missing now? Is there anything the locked bootloader is still preventing us from doing?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

upgrading to Gingerbread as soon as the devs get their hands on it, you're stuck waiting for Moto

      • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

Ahh. Thanks for the clarification there. That sucks, but I still feel pretty good about how much can be done with this phone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=591569613 Balthazar Ruster

    High Voltage + 1450 MHz/400MHz + SetCPU Performance Mode = 1925 Quadrant score

  • http://www.facebook.com/beegore Brandon Bombard

But the “MAIN” question is. After a reboot will this still be implemented into the rom for whatever setting overclock you picked? Because if it doesn't than it's a piece.

    • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

The way I understand it, once you find a setting you like, then you can go in and set it to boot at that setting.

  • Makeshiftharmony

I'm getting an error: can't install overclocking componates. An I doing something wrong? I have been using the other oc app with no problem.

    • Makeshiftharmony

      And yes I'm rooted.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=591569613 Balthazar Ruster

Just reboot. That solved the problem for me.

  • DarthRogue

My phone is getting an error saying that it failed to install the overclocking components, and to contact the dev. Anyone found a simple way around this?

  • MrToTo4Life

I just emailed the developer for help. I have followed all steps listed above but when i go to set frequencies it tells me: error: failed to install overclocking components. Contact the developer. has anyone else had this issue?

    • brife

I imagine that you have to be rooted.

      • MrToTo4Life

Rooted with the instructions provided above and all other root items are working

      • DarthRogue

I am having this issue as well. I just got around to updating to the OTA from the leak, and I did it by flashing the 2.2 SBF over the leak, and it strangely kept all of my data…
However because I had to re-root after updating, I found out that the app won't even open if you don't have root. If you try to launch the app, it just runs the comments saying “this requires root access” and quits the app. I'll email him too, seeing as he himself said that sometimes it takes a lot of emails for him to get the message that something's screwed up…

      • http://www.facebook.com/jdenman03 Jared Denman

I AM rooted, and I am having the exact same issue. It says that it failed to install the overclocking components and to contact the dev.

  • blu3bird

so I didn't read this artible yet and missed the “DO NOT choose to “Set Frequencies on Boot” yet.”. Which I did, and now my phone wont boot. I don't have a backup to flash, is there any option for me?

    • blu3bird

      factory reset did nothing.

      • http://www.facebook.com/typemgtst Jon Turner

        Sbf it

    • blu3bird

      fixed it.

  • Deichman234

Hey kellex, I installed the 928 droidx theme, and I want to install some roms, but I can't with the theme, us there any way to remove the theme?

  • http://www.facebook.com/amcloud Andy Cloud

Droid X overclocked to 1.45 on high voltage on jrummy's app runnin like a champ! Suck it I*hone!

    • ElMuchoDroido

Mine goes into turtle mode as soon as i go any higher than 1.1.. i think i got a dud. would be my luck.

      • Lakerzz

Try uninstalling then reinstall the app…actually did had to do it 3 times and it worked. Bigtime turtle mode…(It was more like “pull battery mode”)

  • jtdoes

For the SETCPU settings, should “Set on Boot” be selected?

  • El El Kool J

Droid X is becoming more appealing to me now :P

  • Draggerlane

You know what really sux and I know this is really off topic but I totally lost my phone 4 wheeling yesterday. I had it in the belt clip pouch that Verizon sells to you as a outer case. I got stuck in a mud puddle and I thought I lost it there but I totally drained the puddle out and it wasn't there. I also back tracked every where I went and no phone. How stupid could I be. So guys on a scale from one to ten how stupid was I now I have to get a new one and I had mine decked out too I'm so Pissed.

    • nicotinic

MAYBE Verizon could locate the phone via gps. Worth a try…or not.

      • Draggerlane

i had MYLOOKOUT installed on the phone but it only works if the gps is on and unfortunately I had it turned off.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

My Droid2 can handle 1.25ghz on Ultra Low Voltage. That's were I'm probably gonna stay. SO STOKED!!!

  • BigRed4X15

Having a little difficulty. When I click on the frequency I want the phone immediately reboots on its own. When the phone is done booting, I go into setCPU and I still show 1GHz, and yes I tell it to auto detect. Any suggestions? I have a D2 with bootstrap, running blackglass. I picked the JRummy app. Thanks!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Turner/100000193912372 Daniel Turner

Well, I'm in a boot loop. I also don't have a image that I can restore to. I'm kinda fuked at the moment.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

You were warned. Everyone should know this: ALWAYS DO A FREAKIN' BACK UP!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/typemgtst Jon Turner

Sbf it… it’ll put it back to stock

  • thelolotov

    /me shrugs

I'll pass for now, my D2 does me well, but I'll definitely keep this bookmarked.

  • Chewybang

I can't wait till I can overclock to Jiggawatts!

  • Kurtdl

Is anyone else having the problem where the phone reboots when you select a frequency????

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NEOS2HO2ITOC6GKUN2Q4DZHZCA Daniel

droid x 2.2 tried the 1.4 on low voltage first, rebooted on me, 1.35 on low voltage so far stable about 20 minutes….(Crosses fingers) Btw quadrant of 1719!

  • Xeneize480

    Benchmarks 16000 =) using 1.3Ghz Medium Frequency.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KHI4N5WM55UHS45NJ73T63DOF4 david

Ok I think im happy with a quadrent score of 1692 for now seems to ne ribbon strong

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KHI4N5WM55UHS45NJ73T63DOF4 david

      Low voltage 1.25

  • Acalvillo5

    No custom theme Friday? :(

  • rob

can anybody tell me what will i gain from overclocking. Will my Droid X now make calls by itself or what…Will the internet be faster?…will my apps work faster….??

overcloking just seems kinda dumb right now!!

    • Timmah

It makes the Android OS faster.

  • Xeneize480

What the best frequency? 1.3 1.2 1.25? I tried 1.4 but my phone runs really slowwwww!

  • Numbskill

After I select a frequency with JRummy, my phone reboots. Also, SetCPU isn”t auto-detecting the new settings.

    Is it supposed to reboot?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

I love this app sooo much!!! There's officially no reason to say the Droid2 cant do anything that the Droid1 can't in root.

    • tanknspank

Aosp, sense, having a true recovery. Just to name a few.

  • mathees

whats the point of using a kernel thats high voltage? seems like using a low voltage one is a no-brainer

    • Pandemic187

If the voltage is too low for a given clock speed, the phone will be unstable/unusable.

      • kellex

Exactly. If you can use a low voltage, then good for you, but some phones can't handle them meaning you need to go higher.

  • mathees

    1677? Hot damn

    • Pandemic187
      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KHI4N5WM55UHS45NJ73T63DOF4 david

Wow is that with an X…. what settings did u use

        • Pandemic187

D2. I'm just using the Unstable Apps app – 1.4GHz/66v. It's honestly not that great though, because some have gotten as much as 1950 at 1.4GHz I believe.

  • Pandemic187

    1677? Weeeeak. :)

  • tkilla

What's the max temp your phone should be before it melts down?

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

      Below 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

      • tkilla

Thanks man. I appreciate the answer. I was at 104 and was starting to worry. Thanks for clearing that up.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

ur welcome. you should be good then cuz 104 is ok. happy overclocking!

  • NykoNako

I can't see either app in the MP, tried to find them using FlyX ROM, with and with out a build.prop mod, any ideas?

  • Michael_NM

With these overclocking breakthroughs, I wonder… Can someone overclock the Google and Moto developers?

    I want some gingerbread! :P

    • dellbx

LOL!!! I like the way you think

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NEOS2HO2ITOC6GKUN2Q4DZHZCA Daniel

only problem is every new software update means new root, deodex, etc.

        • tjhrulz

you just had to say that and ruin it didn’t you…………..jerk lol

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

lol we gotta overclock them to like.. 5ghz dude!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LPJJQEWMBH6G6XELXBC3B3JUDE James Ditmer

Is it pretty normal that some people can get up to 1.4GHz and above on the same phone while some others of us can only get 1.1 or 1.15GHz?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

      … pick a higher kernal frequency…

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LPJJQEWMBH6G6XELXBC3B3JUDE James Ditmer

        What would you suggest?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

Has nothing to do with picking a higher frequency. I could set that to 100, but I still can't get past 1.15 ghz. My CPU just can't handle it and immediately goes into “turtle mode.” It seems that anyone who bought their X on release day is in this same position, so it has something to do with that batch of TI processors.

      • Carpatus

Actually, I heard of a few release day ones that can get into the upper frequency’s like 1.4. I believe what has happened is quality control standards for the chips went up the longer they were out which resulted in the chips being able to handle more. Granted, even the ones coming out today may not be able to handle the higher frequency’s but every chip is different.

      • Jinxt

I think it actually may be a combination of the CPU and the system set-up. I ordered my X at 12:06am from the Verizon website and received it the next day (the Friday after in-store release). The other day I was running rubiX 1.0 and I couldn’t stress test for this long without a crash/reboot. I’m currently on Fission 1.1 and stress testing at 1.25 for the past 3 minutes without issue. Unless the shipped batch ordered online was a different batch than the stores received I don’t think that has anything to do with it and feel it comes down to sample variation more than with the entire batch.

        • Jinxt

I should add, on rubiX the stress test would crash at 1.15 after about 10 seconds. Going to crank it up to the 1.3-1.4 range and see whats what.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LPJJQEWMBH6G6XELXBC3B3JUDE James Ditmer

Ok, thanks. That makes sense since that is when I got mine. Oh well, its still a very fast phone.

        • Lakerzz

I recently got my DX and had the same problem…idk (“turtle mode”)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

Incredibly risky? I know you don't want to get sued, but incredibly? Who here has ruined a phone through overclocking?

    • Bill

      sigh

    • kellex

      Gotta warn people my brother.

      • Muse

Any news on why the jr link to this app doesn’t work?? Running flyx on official 2.2 leak.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

just because many people on here dont report problems doent mean they dont exist. its really incredibly risky. im sure tons of people have bricked their phones messing with overclocking.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

All I’m saying is, I still haven’t heard of one case. I know if I screwed up my phone I’d tell the world

        • WusteHase

I screwed up my D2 today trying to OC with JRummy. DIdn’t think about the voltage setting, and clicked the set on boot on accident before I set the first one. Boot loop. Now trying to un-loop it.

          • Zack121556

Sucks man…Same thing happen to me….had to turn on in recover….hard reset did the trick :-(

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=710530141 Tyler Buchanan

Yeah but you eventually figured out how to fix it and no permanent damage was done right? I mean the first couple times never go that smoothly but I don’t think any noob has the capability to actually brick their phone, they won’t go deep enough into anything

          • http://twitter.com/Bl4ckn355 Michael Black

I have bricked my OG Droid many times. The boot loop is my favorite. All I can tell you is learn to use adb and back up often. Don’t forget to back up. And remember to back up…

The great thing about the D1 is that I have yet to find a software issue from rooting, ROM’ing, or theming, that I couldn’t recover from.

  • bravoleader2

    Don't catch it on fire!

    • Blckrex1313

      i already did

      • bravoleader2

        NICE!
