How to: Pick an Android Phone

by: | posted 09.29.10 | News

Need help choosing an Android phone?  Gizmodo just created this handy little chart, which whether you like Giz or not, is spot on.  The only thing I could really argue against is the T-Mobile selection.  I’d say, screw the Vibrant and just wait for the G2 to come out (which I now realize it says) and then it would be about perfect.  There could be an argument against the Droid X as being the best phone on Verizon, but it would be a hard one to win.

Thoughts?

Contest: Missed the Swype Beta Signup Period? We’re Giving Away 50 Invitations!

by: | posted 09.29.10 | Contests

Sick of waiting for some hacked version of Swype to be released every time there is a new beta released to their somewhat exclusive program?  Still upset that you missed the signup period?  Well as of today, you no longer have to worry.  Swype just handed us 50 invitations to give out to Droid Life readers who want to be a part of the program!  Pretty sweet right?  (+1 Swype)

And since these are premium invites, we’re going to make it slightly more difficult for you to enter.  OK, not terribly difficult, but instead of just 1 step like most of our contests include, you will have 2.

How to enter:

1.  Join our forums and post the reason you love Swype in this forum thread.
2.  Follow us on Twitter and tweet the following message:

@droid_life is giving away 50 Swype beta invites!  Contest details here – http://goo.gl/EE5o #swype #android

That’s it!

Winners:

We will pick the 50 winners tomorrow afternoon and forward them on to our friends at Swype.  After they have received the list, they will setup invite accounts for the winners and forward you the information needed to get the latest beta and become a part of their program.

There you go, another giveaway here at Droid Life.  A big thanks to Swype for the 50 invites!

Good luck everyone!

Hot Reboot Allows Android Device Reboots in Half the Time

by: | posted 09.29.10 | Apps, News

Want to reboot your phone in about half the time?  Then check out an app called Hot Reboot which makes your your device feel a little closer to the quick boot that the new HTC Sense offers.  You can see our demo on the Incredible here.  Hot Reboot starts just the graphical shell and not the entire device allowing you to clear memory and get your phone running as fast as ever.

Root is required though.  In the market for about $0.68.  Should work on almost any Android device.

Amazon App Store Distribution Agreement Leaks

by: | posted 09.29.10 | Apps, News

Rumors of an Android app store launching from Amazon have all but been confirmed today through a leaked distribution agreement meant for developers.  Among the terms listed, we see that devs royalties will “equal to the greater of (i) 70% of the purchase price or (ii) 20% of the List Price” and that Amazon will retain a free copy of each app submitted for users who have already paid for the app even if it has been pulled from sale.

There is also a rumored $99 annual fee to be a part of the store.   We’re all still waiting for confirmation from Amazon, but you’ve got to think it will be coming any day now.  To read the full agreement, hit up the source link below.

I’ve got to admit that I’m more excited to see an Amazon app store than I am a Verizon VCAST version.  Thoughts?

Pandora Receives Update, Fixes Audio Quality Issue from Froyo?

by: | posted 09.29.10 | Apps, News

Pandora has been updated to version 1.5 and we have been told that it could fix the audio issues many were experiencing while running it with Froyo.  This seems a little odd as Pandora gave off the impression that Android was to blame, but all reports suggest that it sounds amazing again.  We’re digging for a changelog and have already reached out to the big P.

Download the update from the market now.

Anyone else noticing better quality audio?
