You are correct, the comment “Once you go black, you never go back” is a stereotype, but it is not racist, nor is it offensive when used the way it was in the context we are discussing. I am okay with that. Your follow up comment, “Or get credit” in the context is also a stereotype, but racist and bigoted.

The difference is that the former comment is a cliché stereotypical statement with racial overtones (not racist overtones) that is used in many general ways, and in this instance not derogatory. Your follow up comment however is specifically racially targeted and derogatory, which makes it racist and offensive. Perhaps you should review the definitions of derogatory, bigoted and racism, while keeping in mind that the perspective they describe is about others.

Yes we all do have different senses of humor, though I did not label you as a racist. I do not know you, so I cannot say whether you are a racist or not. I am not overreacting, I am simply addressing your choice or words and letting you know that given the “context of the conversation” you wrote a racially derogatory and bigoted comment.

You request that I “lighten up buddy”, and write that I have “taken a joking exchange of stereotypes and completely ignored one as being offensive and raised the other to the level of hate speech, which to me seems hypocritical and overly politically correct.” These read as if you would like the privilege to write a comment that is bigoted – whether you realize it is or not – without having to hear anything about it. Joking exchanges cross the boundaries of harmless stereotypes when the fun and entertainment is had at the expense of degrading others, whoever the others may be.

I think you are overreacting. I did not call your comment hate speech, nor did I raise it “to the level of hate speech”. You are correct, hate speech is another level. I did not try hard to find the racism in your comment. In fact I actually took many deep breaths and tried hard not to find your comment derogatory or bigoted.

Your lack of understanding of the nuances of what is racial, racist, derogatory, bigoted, hate speech and stereotypical within the present context, and as relates to historical context is not unusual. I do not write this to be condescending, but because these are a lot to comprehend. It takes a lot of work to think deeply and broadly about the world and grasp it from the perspective of others; it is especially difficult to do so if you are from a segment of society that does not have to, or need to.

You mistake my comments for hypocrisy and being overly politically correct. I think for you to understand the nuance of what I am pointing out, requires more exposure to life and the world from others perspectives, as well as a deeper grasp of historical context than that which is available or appropriate in this forum; or than I – and possibly you – have time for. We should just agree to disagree.

PEACE

Hey Kellex,

If you're really serious about "community", and if you are serious about reaching and supporting the whole "Android community", then you should not let little - or big - petty racist comments like the one above by EC8Ch go by unchecked.

That's if you're really serious about setting a standard of respect on your blog, which is otherwise quite an informative and rich resource for "the Android community". It is your playground and you set the rules of engagement.
