Video: DROID 2 Multimedia Dock Review

The Droid 2 seems to be an enigma of sorts that no one can quite figure out.  Is it a worthy upgrade from the original Droid or not?  (Maybe if we would actually do a review people could decide?  Soon!)  Well one of the accessories for it, the multimedia dock, is pretty easy to figure out.  It’s a newly polished version of the previous dock, but also allows for docking with a case on your phone.  Really, those might be the only differences.  It’s definitely not the Droid X multimedia dock.

I have a droid2 with the droid2 dock. Has anyone notices that there's a gap between the back of the phone and the doird2 dock support? I don't understand the point of that plastic back support if there's a gap in between. The phone's supported seems to come entirely from the bottom of the dock.

Droid life has reviewed the fascinate and not the droid2? Omg!

  • KleenDroid

I was upgraded to the D2 as my 4th replacement of the D1. Since getting the D2 I have enjoyed it very much and am very happy I was lucky enough to get the upgrade. So if you get the opportunity to get a 2 as a free upgrade I would jump on it… :)

However if you have to pay full price for it I would have to consider it a little differently. And if you are thinking of waiting to closer to it's end of life I would wait a bit longer and see what comes out next. It's a fun problem, but we will always want to have the newest phone that comes out! I wish I owned a meaningful share of Verizons stock!

I am so pissed we still do not have 2.2 with Droid X!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • guest

I've had this thing sitting on my desk for a couple days, and I had no idea it had a removable inset for a case. I haven't picked a case yet, but thanks for the tip!

  • CivilDroid

Anybody ported the D2 in-dock program to the D1 yet? That would be pretty sweet!

  • sylent101

This guy had to of spent a good 2,000+ on these Droid products lol damn I didn't think they had a Droid 2 too.

  • Strange_creation3000

Hey kellex, i was wondering if any companies made a home sterio dock like they have for the crapple iphones… you know like the ones with a big bose speakers and what not… i would love to have something like that for my X

I have a D2 and I'm using a D1 dock. My biggest complaint is that the brightness is too high (even at the lowest setting) at night. I can't have it pointing toward me while I'm trying to sleep, just too much light. I suspect it's due to the type of screen used.

    • Tdognast

just turn the screen off. You can't read it while your sleeping anyway. It takes like 1 second to turn it back on if you need to read it. Or just pick it up.

      • Devin

yeah, I could do that but I was really hoping to just glance over and get the time without having to do anything. I enjoy my laziness.

        • The350zWolf

          Amen!

  • Jeff Jones

so, will my D1 with a case fit on the D2 dock?

  • http://twitter.com/willsours Will Sours

Docking with a case you say? This is why I have yet to buy a single dock or OEM car mount for any of my Android's… Hopefully others will catch on.

I have a Droid 1. I looked at the Droid 2 in detail and it does not seem that much of an upgrade from the Droid 1. The keyboard on the Droid 2, while more user-friendly than the keyboard on the Droid 1, is in my opinion not that much better than the Droid 1 keyboard. The keys are still too close together on both Droid models. On both Droid models you don't get the feel of a Blackberry keyboard (and Blackberry makes the best keyboards, in my mind). With Blackberry, the keys are spread apart (do not touch each other) and are rounded (which makes it easy for your finger to find the right key to press). The internet searching speed on the Droid 2 seems the same as the speed on the Droid 1. Both Droid 1 and Droid 2 use Froyo. Everything else seems the same except the HD connectivity you get with the Droid 2 and not the Droid 1. I'm going to wait for the next Droid version to come out Christmas 2010 before upgrading from my Droid 1.

I didn't think the upgrade compared to the D1 was that big a deal…

      Until I got a D2!

The D2 is a tremendous improvement over my D1 in many areas. When I looked at it in the store it didn't seem like a big deal. But new and in my home I am impressed.

Loved my rooted D1 with custom Roms, but the stock D2 destroys it!

      • The350zWolf

Hey, Kleen, can you elaborate more on what is it that you find different on the D2 compared to the rooted D1? As far as speed the D2 should just be simply faster and snappier by virtue of the larger RAM, since both CPU's can run at 1GHz. The other benefit I presume is the 8Gb of internal memory, no more “low memory” warning when adding 200+ apps ;^)

        • KleenDroid

I ran custom roms with my D1 and often overclocked anywhere from 800 – 1200. At the time I thought the D1 seemed fast enough. But immediately after starting to use the D2 I realized that the D1 is nowhere near as quick. I am sure this has to do with the processor and ram… So simply put, everything I do with the phone is faster and smoother.

My battery life is MUCH better on the D2 than it was on the D1. Also my call quality is greatly improved for those that are listening to me. I received countless complaints with the D1.

Also I like a few features that Blur has to offer but I would like it better if I was able to modify things I didn't like. I do wish I had the ability to flash roms as easily as the D1 offered but so far the 2 can stand on it's own legs without the need.

I didn't have any problems with 2.2 on the D1, but it seems as the D2 can handle it better. Probably again simply because of the processor and ram. Flash is also much improved for the same reasons.

The D2 is so nice that it made leaving my D1 behind easy.

          • The350zWolf

Thanks! I was a little ambivalent if it was worthwhile upgrading. A Verizon rep. at costco said it wasn't really worth it, but I took that with a grain of salt. The two things I hate from the VZW stock android is the bloatware and the adds. Since the D2 can be rooted then this becomes a non-issue. I appreciate the info. Enjoy the D2 and I look forward on getting one soon (before its end of life). Thanks again!

Doubt I'll upgrade, but just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the D1 dock and car mount work with the D2?

    • A1cntrler

I have the same question. I have the Multimedia dock/car dock package that I bought at COSTCO a few months back. $30 for both and a car charger and another home charger. Could not beat that deal anywhere. I love the car dock for it. My annual upgrade just hit, and I was thinking of going Droid2, however did not want to have to go buy a new dock for home and car…

      • Jeremy

My D2 fits into the D1 dock perfectly

The car dock does not fit cause of the new lip below the screen and touch buttons

    • Aaa

The dock works…I have both docks and phones…

  • Sjm614

Everyone at Droid-Life hates the Droid Incredible, don't they? It's ok you can admit it…
