Download: New Gmail Version 2.2.1

While messing around with a couple of new ROMs for my Incredible last night, I noticed the Gmail app doing some things I had never seen before up in the header.  It now included a reply/reply to all/forward button in the header which made like instantly awesome.  At first I had brushed it off as some new 2.2 Sense feature that HTC was including, but after seeing another post this morning on the same Gmail amazing-ness, I now get it, and have slapped myself 4 times for not realizing it sooner.

So yeah, we have a new version of Gmail, which seriously, is so amazing.  From the shot above, you can see a couple of the new features listed out:

  • New header design makes it easier to reply or star messages.
  • Performance boost for most features.
  • Lots more cool stuff you’ll love.

Update:  Apparently this has been included in ROMs for a while now, but now stock users can enjoy the tastiness too.

Update 2: I get it people, ROMs had this built in.  You could have at least told me! (hah)

Works on every single on of my devices running Froyo including the DI, Droid X and original Droid.  Yep, your device has to be running Android 2.2.

*Both rooted and non-rooted users enjoy!

Download:  Gmail.v.2.2.1.apk

Install as you would any other application.  Download, tap on it when it finishes, hit install, hit open.

Froyo (Frozen Yogurt) = Android 2.2

I installed the new gmail on my Moto Droid and it works great!

  • Saojeo

Is this good for the original Droid by Verizon? I don't think it's called the Incredible, so I thought I should check first.
I just got my 2.2 update & it went through without any problems. Then I downloaded Adobe Flash from the Marketplace. End result: I still can't view most videos. You Tube videos work, but pretty much nothing else. So nothing that I needed really changed with that update.
    BTW, what does Froyo mean?

    Thanks for any info,
    SAOJEO

Hoping someone here can help me, and since this concerns gmail its not totally…. of topic lol. About a week week and a half a go my gmail app on my phone stopped actually deleting messages. Lets say i get message A, i go and delete message A. Later on I get a new email (message B). At the top of my gmail app it will say I have 2 unread messages even though only message B is being shown. I delete message B, later I get message C, now it says three unread messages and only message C is being shown. I go into my web gmail and all three messages are still there. I installed this new gmail hoping it would fix the problem and no love. Any thoughts.

    • Spursrchamps2007

Let me add if i read a message it does the same thing saying I have multiple unread messages, unless i read them threw my web gmail account

  • http://twitter.com/928Droid 928Droid

BTW, did you know this has been in some ROMs for weeks???

HA, HA, ,,,, BUT, bet you didn't know it has also been in a certain Theme for approx. the same amount of time too…even a certain Droid X Theme … :-)

  • Sl8743

Not to change the subject, but could someone help me. I installed google voice but it gets stuck on verifying my phone #…sometimes it gets past that then always gets stuck on the pin #. It won't let me enter one. I m not rooted if that matters. Thnx in advance.

The real important question is whether this version actually lets you do things a real mail client would — like download an attachment other than an image. I gave up on the Android Gmail client months ago for K9-Mail because of missing essential features. If only K9 Mail could search all of my Gmail for things (other than the messages it has downloaded) I would be content.

    • Allroy63

And by download I mean “Save to my big ass SD card,” not “Open a document in horrible QuickOffice”

      • http://parker-cs.com/MediaManager.aspx Kwparker80

        See Above.

        • Allroy63

Thanks for the tip. I did at one point have an attachment downloader, but ultimately gave up on it for K9 because it just seemed sort of ridiculous that I needed to use additional phone memory to run another app to download attachments. The GMail interface is certainly nicer than K9, but it doesn't do what I need it to do — and doesn't allow me to manage multiple identities at once (I forward mail from a work account to Gmail, but when I reply I want to my reply-to address to reflect my Work account — not my Gmail account).

The sad part is that K9 is a fork of the Gmail Mail client – it makes you wonder why both apps are missing things the other has…

          • http://parker-cs.com/MediaManager.aspx Kwparker80

AttachmentToSD isn't an app you have to start, it doesn't even have a shortcut anywhere. It simply pops up on the list like Quickoffice or whatever does after downloading the attachment. Try it, I really like it.

          • http://twitter.com/Paleogirl2003 Kelly Walsh

going to try that one thanks! hopefully it will be easier than going to the web version of gmail to download some attachments

I wrote a Windows app that sends lists of DVD's and stuff to smartphones. I send them to my Gmail address all the time. Gmail will download them (PDF's), but once it is done there has to be an app to deal with them, such a Gallery for photos, QuickOffice for documents, Adobe Reader for PDF's. I also installed AttachmentsToSD from the Market (free) and can save ANY attachment to my SD card.

I have gotten a few junk mails with a bar graphic with the Android, and a paper clip over it. You can't do anything with those, which may be a good thing. However, if I check the message on my PC the thing that was showing as an attachment WASN'T shown that way on the computer. Not sure what that is all about.

  • jtwildman1

I don't notice much difference, other than it is now located @ the top of the screen. Maybe I will need more time to play. Ty Droid life, again you keep me ahead of the crowd.

  • http://parker-cs.com/MediaManager.aspx Kwparker80

I can't believe they STILL don't have a 'Select All' button in the folders. If you MANUALLY select all the emails in a folder and press 'menu', there is a 'De-Select All' button. I really get tired of having to manually select 40 or 50 emails to delete them, or go to my PC and do it the right way and let it sync.

Not only that, but in the regular 'Trash' folder, it doesn't even give you the option to delete, they have to be in the imap/trash folder to delete them. Sheesh, what is wrong with those guys.

And as long as I am ranting, What is SO FRIGGIN' HARD about putting an 'Exit' button on the app menus to close them? DL, you are guilty of that as well, your app doesn't stop running when you back out of it, and every time I go into Manage Applications and click on 'running apps' it is still there with 4 to 6 meg of cache. I just now checked it and it was still running with 4.8mb cache, and the Gmail app was running with 12mb, TWELVE MB,cache. No wonder people are always complaining about their phones crawling after a while. I only have 130 meg of RAM left with all app caches cleared, and two apps eating up almost 20 of it just in cache is not cool. And that's not counting the memory the app is using itself !!

    OK, end rant.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

F'N well put… seems so simple, but yet we don't have.

can anyone explain to me why this has been out for some time and we haven't gotten an update yet from the marketplace? im not rooted so i only like to download stuff that comes through there. not the most knowledgeable about these things.

I’m on the Droid X stock running 2.1 and get an error when I launch the apk “There is a problem parsing the package”…any ideas?

  • Dave

Actually, I'm more concerned with what you were doing at the La Quinta Inn.

  • http://twitter.com/phulton Patrick Hulton

On the upside, they give you the option of removing the “feature” that Gmail will only notify you of the first email and never again until you clear that first notification. It's at the bottom of the settings page.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2214771 Dan Fitzgerald

first time I downloaded it I got a parsing error trying to install it. So I redownloaded and it worked fine the next time. The first file didn't show the Gmail icon like the second did. Try redownloading if you have issues installing

    • Matthenard

Thanks Dan, I had the same problem.

  • Steelhand69

I have droid 2 and installed this and works well

  • saimin

The new gmail has “select text” in the more menu. I don't think copy-and-paste was available in gmail before. Works great.

  • Dhinged

Why not put Reply and Forward on the bottom panel? I use those all the time but never Archive and rarely Delete.

  • Rob

This is off topic,if u r rooted would u get the update too the new 2.2 version.

On ChevyNo1 SS 4.7 I have the reply, reply to all, forward header but its at the bottom of the message instead of at the top..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1283671477 Ralph Trentacosta

Thanks for the update, now go take your La Quinta Inn survey. They seem anxious to know about your stay :-)

  • Br_d

I'm running simply stunning 4.7 and my gmail version is 2.2. When I try to install this .apk, it just says “application not installed”. When I try to remove my current gmail app from settings > applications, the uninstall button is grayed out. Chevy doesn't appear to have a script to uninstall it either.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this installed? Thanks.

    • brain550

      Having the same problem.

    • Jeff

I loaded it on SS 4.7.2 and it loaded fine. I do not have any themes running though….

Br_d I used Titanium and uninstalled gmail, rebooted phone then installed apk. Hope this helps!

Wont install on sapphire 1.1 Any help?

  • jiggaman508

Me too I just got one as a warranty replacement, I really like it but I def miss flashing roms already, any idea when an easier method to root this beast will come out…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=705034 Jeff Simpson

I hate the new gmail. You used to be able to just hit “reply”. Now you have to hit the arrow button, wait for the slow popup window to slide around, and THEN hit reply. I'd prefer that button to be a reply button, but when you long-press it you get the extra options.

    • http://couleecreative.com/ CouleeCreative.com

I agree with the pop-up box part, default should be reply and long press should bring up options

  • EC8CH

Here's some cool stuff I'd love:

A Gmail widget similar to the Mail widget on HTC Sense… come on Google.

  • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeffrey Bernard

wat, did any body mention that this has been in cover moms for a while now?

you have to love google voice transcription sometimes they are funnier than the joke you're trying to make

Do you think this will eventually be a market update or will we have to wait for the next system update?

  • http://twitter.com/imfaral Christopher Temples

I was all excited about a new Gmail version then noticed that you were talking about the one in Cyanogenmod 6 and was let down.

so wait what? This is included with the 2.2 build for the Droid Incredible? I didn't follow your article at all.

    • kellex

It was in a ROM for the Incredible. And sounds like it's in many ROMs, but now stock users can load it too.

  • keithsmith22

I just installed Sapphire 1.1.0 and I am trying to install this. Is it because it is a System App that I can't install it. If so, how do I get rid of the old to install the new?

    • http://www.facebook.com/ewhitaker Eric Whitaker

I am also having the same problem.

      • http://www.facebook.com/RoyR80 Roy Rader

Use a system tool (for Li-mod, its “absoulte sys…”) to remove old version of app, reboot fone, install, enjoy

    • T_Droid

I installed Sapphire 1.1.0 last night and just downloaded the new gmail app and it installed the first time no problem. I did apply the watermarked theme to 1.1.0 after I installed, maybe that made a difference???

      • IseWise

I was having the same problem I fixed it by uninstalling the old version of Gmail using Titanium Backup, rebooting and installing the newer version of Gmail.

        Hope that works for you.

  • Jcampbell474

I am running SS 4.7, 928Droid Black Glass, and these features have been on my phone for awhile. Didn't know it was an update, but I'm always happy to know updates are taking place!

    • Br_d

Weird. I'm running SS 4.7 also, but I'm not running a theme, and I have the old version of gmail. I wouldn't think a new version of gmail would be included in a theme, so it's weird that you have it and I don't. I also can't seem to get it to install.

  • AJ

Possibly a dumb question…buuut does it have to be running Froyo? You mentioned all your devices are.

      Yes.
