Unstoppable Andy, the Latest Must Have Android Shirt

by: | posted 08.26.10 | Accessories, News

The should-be-award-worthy Android t-shirt series that we’ve been covering is back with a new edition, the Unstoppable Andy.  Following up on the Andy vs. Apple release, this new gem takes the evil empire vs. the good guys one step further.  Notice the attenna Ghostbuster pack?  Notice its failure?  Priceless.

Pick one up today for $19 here.

And so you know, these shirts are printed on American Apparel t’s which are top notch.  I have both Exploded and Andy vs. shirts and love them.

Full DROID Incredible Froyo Build Leaks

by: | posted 08.26.10 | Incredible, News

Only hours after our source dropped a 9/1 Froyo release bomb for the Droid Incredible (then retracted it), a full Android 2.2 leak snuck into the wild.  And we aren’t talking about some simple nandroid ROM, we’re talking an RUU which is like an SBF file in HTC land.

You can grab the file from the source link below, but you may want to hold off from flashing this just yet.

Update:  INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS HERE.

We’re still in the process of flashing this to our own DI and will let you know as soon as we have finished, but really you just need to understand that this is big news.  And maybe our jittery source wasn’t so wrong after all?

DROID2 Rooting Method Works for DROIDX Running Froyo

by: | posted 08.26.10 | DROID2, News, Root, Tips

The same rooting method used for the Droid2 that we told the world about yesterday also works on the Droid X running Android 2.2.  So anyone that upgraded their DX to Froyo the other day and either lost root or never had it, prepare yourselves to gain control.

All you need to do is follow these directions exactly and superuser access is yours:

*Warning* – As always, when you decide to root your phone, you understand that it voids your warranty.  You also take all responsibility should something permanently damage your phone.  Droid Life will not be held responsible.

Setup:
- Install adb/Android SDK and Motorola drivers for windows(32-bit or 64-bit)
- Download this file:  Droid2Root.rar
- Extract to a directory, I used c:\Droid2Root
- Make sure you have USB degugging enabled
- Change connection to PC Mode

Process:
1.  Open command prompt
2.  cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
3.  adb devices (to verify the connection)
4.  cd c:\Droid2Root
5.  adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
6.  adb push su /sdcard/su
7.  adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
8.  adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
9.  adb shell
10.  cd data/local/tmp
11.  chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
12.  ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

13.  let the process run until it returns you to c:\Droid2Root (be patient, it may take a bit)
14.  cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
15.  adb devices (to verify the connection)
16.  adb shell (you should now have a # prompt)
17.  mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
18.  cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
19.  cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
20.  cp /sdcard/busybox /system/bin/busybox
21.  chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
22.  chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
23.  mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
24.  exit
25.  exit

*Note 1* – If you get to step 16 and do see a “#” then something has gone wrong.  I was able to simply start the process over and the second time through received the “#”.

*Note 2* – Should you run into other issues, hit up our comment section or the XDA Forum link below.

And this is just a guess, but you have to figure a 1-touch method is in the works already.  Stay tuned.

Original DROID Not Dead, Just Living in Asia Running WinMo

by: | posted 08.25.10 | News

Fake phones are simply awesome.  The newest, which mimics the original Droid might be the best one to date too.  This Droid knockoff sports some pretty impressive specs/features including WinMo6.5, a 3MP camera, 3.5″ “high definition” touchscreen and a 533MHz processor all while taking itself as serious as possible.  This new version rivals the fake D1 we saw a while back, but looks so much more legit, especially with those phone buttons replacing the softkeys.  (You can’t paint sarcasm any thicker.)

Rumor: DROID Incredible Froyo Update Coming September 1st? (Updated)

by: | posted 08.25.10 | News

There hasn’t been much Android 2.2 for the Droid Incredible talk in recent weeks, so we thought we’d fire up that engine again with a juicy rumor that just hit our inbox.  The Droid and Droid 2 already have the latest Android OS leaving those with the Incredible and Droid X feeling just slightly frustrated.  So when can we expect it then?

According to one of our sources, the DI’s update to Froyo should happen on September 1st and will include all of the previous features we’ve covered a dozen or so times such as 720p video, improved voice quality, and a bunch of bloatware.

Apparently the marketing team for Verizon has already been notified and you can expect to see a ramp-up of DI commercials over the next week or so.

Update:  Our sources are now backing off of their original report.  Delays people.  No word on what those may be, but the 1st is likely out.  And that was the quickest rumor in Droid history.  We’re sorry that we’ve wasted you time.  I hate Froyo.

Start crossing your fingers now.  And as we’ve clearly stated in the title, this is only a rumor until we see some documentation or until an update actually hits someone’s device.  Until then, we’ll keep digging as we always do for further confirmation.

Of course you can also root your phone and install the leaked 2.2 now.

Excited?  Crossing fingers?

DROID X and 2 Dominate Battery Showdown, AMOLEDs Struggle Mightily

by: | posted 08.25.10 | Accessories, News

The guys over at LaptopMag just released battery test results for every major Android phone on the market and the Droid 2 and Droid X dominated the show.  Their LCD screens appear to be the key to their battery life awesomeness while all phones running AMOLED or Super AMOLED screens seemed to struggle to even keep pace.  As you can see from the chart below, it’s not even a competition…

So does this mean you should avoid buying an Incredible?  Not necessarily.  AMOLED technology produces some amazing colors, just steer clear of anything involving a lot of white.  Or you could buy one of the extended batteries available in our store.  (Shameless plug!)

Check out the rest of the writeup including details on the actual test over at LaptopMag.

Latin American Milestone Will NOT Receive Android 2.2

by: | posted 08.25.10 | News

This Motorola software upgrade timeline is as good as any daytime soap opera.  Just yesterday it was upgraded to show that the Canadian Milestone would be receiving Froyo some time in early 2011 and everyone bunny hopped for joy.  The good news stops there unfortunately.  The timeline has once again been updated only this time it shows as clear as day that the Milestone in Latin America and Mexico will NOT receive Froyo…ever.  Yikes.

Any of our Latin American readers want to weigh in?

Cheers @yvesnadjarian!
