Real HDMI App for DROID X Unlocks HDMI Magic

by: | posted 08.30.10 | News, Videos

Time to take your Droid X and use it’s HDMI out feature the way it was meant to be used through Real HDMI.  From developer Gman comes the first app which allows you to hook up your DX, see the display simultaneously on your TV and take full advantage of its awesomeness.

There are a few limitations, but remember that this is brand new and will continue to get better through time.  If you have a Droid X, this is definitely worth your money.

New DROID Incredible User Guide, Maybe they are Shipping with Froyo?

by: | posted 08.30.10 | News

After Verizon updated their Droid Incredible page to include Android 2.2 and bloatware in the description of the device, we had to wonder if they would start shipping DI’s with Froyo already pre-installed.  It now looks like that will definitely be the case going forward after we received this new user guide.  While the massive 308 page guide doesn’t actually mention Android 2.2, it drops enough hints including the screenshot above which shows the Froyo Google search bar.  We also just received word from a reader who’s brand new DI is apparently running Froyo out of the box.

Download:  New Droid Incredible Userguide

And to answer the question we’ve seen a lot over the last few days; yes as far as we know, 2.2 is still being sent out to all Incredibles.  But remember, you can update to it now by visiting our guide if you’d like!

Anyone receiving a new Incredible today?  Would love to hear what OS it’s running.  And who’s received the 2.2 update?  We’ve heard from a few of you, but want to show the world that it’s still rolling out.

Cheers Jordan!

Monday Poll: Where you at Droid Lifers?

by: | posted 08.30.10 | Polls

Back in March, we ran this same poll/map to see where in the world the readers of Droid Life hail from and thought it was a great time to do it again.  After the release of the Droid X, Incredible and now Droid 2, there are a ton of new readers out there that we are curious to hear from and thought this was the best way to break you into the community that is DL.  Plus, the map looks really cool after a few thousand people drop their location on it!

Here is what you do:

  • Click on the “Add” button on the map and put in your city or zip code.
  • You can also click “Add” and then tap on your location on the map.
  • From there you can either preview it to make sure it’s correct or just hit submit.
  • Please do not put in your actual street address.

Here we go!

Birdman Releases First DROID X ROM, Installation Instructions Here

by: | posted 08.30.10 | DROIDX, News, Root

One of our favorite devs/hackers/awesome people, Birdman, just dropped the first Droid X ROM onto our laps and it’s officially time to get our DX paws a little filthy.  Anyone with us?

His FlyX ROM (ROM Details here.) is only in “RC1 status”, but is available to anyone with a 2.2 rooted Droid X to try out via ROM Manager if they are willing to take the risk.  Obviously we are willing to take that risk!

*Warning 1* – If you root, hack, install a custom ROM onto your phone you are voiding the warranty.  If you choose to do this you accept all risk.  Risks would include permanently damaging your device to the point where it will no longer work.  Again, you accept all risk.

*Warning 2* – READ EVERY SINGLE NOTE.  If you don’t meet all of the criteria, do not attempt this.

Instructions:

*Note 1* – YOU HAVE TO BE RUNNING THE LEAKED 2.2.  (Instructions here.)

*Note 2* – YOU HAVE TO BE ROOTED.  (Instructions here.)

*Note 3* - YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE DROID X BOOSTRAP INSTALLED.  (Info here.)

1.  Once you have all of the above taken care of you are ready to start.
2.  Download and install ROM Manager from the Market.
3.  If you haven’t already, tap the top button to “Flash Clockwork Recovery.”
4.  Once that finishes, choose “Download ROM.”
5.  Choose Birdman’s FlyX.
6.  Choose the only option which is FlyX 0.1 RC1.
7.  The ROM will now download.
8.  When it finishes you will be prompted to backup and wipe data/cache.  Check BOTH boxes.

*Note 4* - Seriously, check BOTH boxes.  You need a backup in case something goes wrong and Birdman is highly recommending that you wipe data and cache.

9.  You phone will now reboot, create a backup and flash the FlyX ROM.
10.  Once it finishes, it will reboot and you will now be running Birdman’s FlyX.

*Note 5* – The first boot will take some time.  Be patient.

*Note 6* – After your phone boots for the first time, if you are really patient, it will likely re-download all of your previously installed apps.  Sign into your Gmail account and watch the sync icon appear and work for a long time depending on the number of apps you had.

11.  Enjoy life without bloatware!

Let us know if you run into any issues.  There are likely to be some seeing as this is the first ROM available, so understand that.  We’ll work through them together by holding hands and singing campfire songs.

I also highly recommend you visit Birdman’s site and donate to the cause.

Cheers everyone who sent this in!

White DROID Incredible Anyone?

by: | posted 08.29.10 | Accessories, News

You can already buy a special edition white HTC EVO, but what about the Droid Incredible?  Similar phone, similar styling, all that, right?  Well now you can.  Except the good part is, it appears as if you can simply buy a new battery cover rather than an entire new phone.  White Incredible time people!

Thoughts on the look?  For some unexplainable reason, I’m kind of digging it.

New HTC Verizon Phone Looks Impressive, but What is it?

by: | posted 08.27.10 | News

BGR just snagged some images of a new HTC device (reportedly headed to Verizon) that are guaranteed to leave you all hot and bothered.  Looking similar to the EVO 4G while sporting a kickstand and front facing camera, this bad boy better be the next “DROID”.  Could it be the Merge which a Phandroid tipster spotted a couple of weeks ago?  What about the “SICK” which was mentioned in a VZW roadmap?  Should we expect it to be 4G?

We have zeros answers to any of those questions at this point, but will be hitting up every source we’ve got to find out more juicy details.  And hit up one last shot after the jump!
